Vegas Golden Knights vs. Winnipeg Jets Preview and Predictions 05-12-2018

    11th May 2018 by Gracenote
the vegas golden knights long since surpassed expectations in authoring the most successful inaugural season in nhl history, and now the expansion team tries to continue its stunning run through the stanley cup playoffs against the winnipeg jets in the western conference finals. the jets host game 1 of the best-of-seven series saturday night, two days after capping a riveting 4-3 series victory over nashville, while vegas has not played since finishing off san jose in six games sunday.

vegas swept los angeles in the opening round and in 10 games has allowed more than three goals just twice, but figures to be pushed by winnipeg's high-powered offense that scored four goals or more five times against the predators. "if we can defend well and get on the attack ourselves, we'll be alright," vegas forward james neal told reporters during a friday press conference. "it's that time of year. everyone is batting for space out there. goals aren't easy to come by." the golden knights will look to unleash their speed while relying on center william karlsson - who has added four goals in the playoffs after scoring 43 during the regular season - and goaltender marc-andre fleury, while the jets counter with center mark scheifele - who has scored a nhl-high 11 goals in 12 postseason games and vezina finalist connor hellebuyck. "we're here to win a stanley cup," hellebuyck told reporters during a press conference friday. "we haven't achieved anything yet."
tv: 7 p.m. et, nbc, cbc, tva
about the golden knights: karlsson's linemates, forwards jonathan marchessault and reilly smith, each have 11 points in 10 playoff games for a vegas squad that finished the regular season with 109 points and won the pacific division title. fleury, who played with pittsburgh as they won the past two stanley cups, has posted a .951 save percentage and a 1.53 goals against average in going 8-2 with four shutouts. another veteran presence to watch for vegas is neal, who owns seven points (three goals) this spring and has 90 games of postseason experience - the first 80 coming with pittsburgh and nashville.
about the jets: winnipeg's top line of scheifele along with forwards blake wheeler and kyle connor has been sensational in the playoffs, combining for 16 goals and 23 assists, while trade-deadline acquisition paul stastny scored twice in game 7 against nashville and boasts 14 points in the postseason. there is also more firepower that has been sporadic in the opening two rounds, including forwards patrik laine (44 regular-season goals, three in the playoffs) and nikolaj ehlers (29 in the regular season, zero in the postseason). hellebuyck, playing in his first postseason, has two shutouts, a .927 save percentage and a 2.24 goals against average in winning eight of 12 starts.
    overtime

    1. vegas won the season series 2-1 and outscored the jets 12-11 in the three games, while winnipeg outshot the golden knights 95-89 and went 4-for-14 on the power play.

    2. fleury only made one start against winnipeg due to injury, making 26 saves in a 3-2 road overtime victory on feb. 1.

    3. jets d dustin byfuglien finished the nashville series with four goals and four assists.

prediction: jets 3, golden knights 1

      #1 SKYLER'S SCRAMJET
      #2 WESTWOOD
      #4 GREAT STUFF
      #3 KING KRANZ

This race which was formally known as the Diablo, this race has been renamed for the Super Saver horse, Run Happy who had an impressive career and currently stands at Claiborne Farm. His biggest and only victory in New York was the 2015 King's Bishop, currently named the H. Allen Jerkens Memorial. Here in the 5th running of the "Happy," #1 SKYLER'S SCRAMJET takes the least challenging step-up in class (+1) this afternoon in this field, and his recent past performance sheets show back-to-back-to-back "POWER RUN WINS" in his 2nd through his 4th races back, and has won 5 of 7 starts in his career to date sprinting at today's distance of 6.0 furlongs on the dirt. #2 WESTWOOD, the pace profile leader in this field, has hit the board in four of his last five outings, winning three times, including back-to-back "POWER RUN WINS" in his 2nd and 3rd races back.

        # 1 LONDON LEGACY 7/2

        # 4 LATE CALLER 6/1

        # 3 J P ROCKER 8/1

LONDON LEGACY is the best bet in this race. Had one of the most competitive Equibase Speed Figures of this field in his last contest. Has performed soundly lately in sprint races, posting a nifty 86 avg Equibase Speed Fig. Diodoro and Mojica have a good win percent together. LATE CALLER - Gordon has shown excellent profits (+17 return on investment ) at this distance/surface. J P ROCKER - The average class fig of 79 makes this horse difficult to beat. This gelding has a good win percent in dirt sprint races.

          # 11 HALF HEARTED 9/5

          # 1 WYNN DIRECTION 7/2

          # 5 ULTRA CODE 5/1

I think about HALF HEARTED here. Vaunts reliable speed figures on average overall when compared with the rest of this group. Should compete admirably in the pace battle which bodes well with this group of horses. Ran a solid last race. WYNN DIRECTION - Is difficult not to look at given the company run in lately. Is worth careful consideration and may be a bet - strong Equibase Speed Figures (53 average) at today's distance and surface lately. ULTRA CODE - With a +26 ROI, this jockey and trainer duo has produced quite good returns as of late for bettors. Has strong Equibase Class Figures relative to this group of animals - worth a look.

            #7 FLASHY SHOES (ML=6/1)
            #9 OFF CYCLE (ML=4/1)

FLASHY SHOES - Have to give this mare a fair chance. Ran a nice outing last race out within the last 30 days. Breaux gets a break on this horse carrying 6 pounds less than last out. This could make a difference in this event. OFF CYCLE - I expect a lot from this thoroughbred. Her speed figs under similar conditions are tops in this bunch. This mare has run pretty well on the turf. Often that form translates to success at a track like this where the turns are sharp.

            Vulnerable Contenders: #8 OUR MILLIE (ML=2/1), #4 SOUTHERN WIND (ML=9/2), #6 MISO SMOOTH (ML=8/1),

OUR MILLIE - You should normally gamble against morning-line favorites that haven't raced or show no activity in the morning over the last three weeks. SOUTHERN WIND - When examining today's Equibase class figure, she will have to register a much better speed figure than last out to battle in this turf sprint. MISO SMOOTH - This horse gave a less than rousing performance last time finishing fourth. Don't see any chance of improvement in today's event. Garnered a mediocre fig last time out in a $7,500 Claiming race on April 26th. Improbable to see an improved performance off of that rating.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - FLASHY SHOES - One of my favorite angles is a longshot that has the top Power Rating.

            STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Bet on #7 FLASHY SHOES to win if we can get at least 5/2 odds

                  #4 MANNFORD (ML=5/2)

MANNFORD - Last workout was the second fastest of the day. Undeniably on edge for a good one today. The addition of the 'shades' usually means that a trainer wants a campaigner to show more speed or to keep his attention focused. Rini has this magnificent animal racing well coming into today. Three strong speed ratings in most recent events make me say this entrant is the one to beat today.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #6 MOBIL SOLUTION (ML=7/2), #7 SHADESLAYER (ML=9/2), #2 APPEALING JAZZ (ML=5/1),

MOBIL SOLUTION - Probably hasn't had enough seasoning to beat the elders today. APPEALING JAZZ - The move down the stretch on Apr 4th indicated to me that this animal will have a tough go of it versus this field of tougher competition. Tough to support any animal that runs as well as he did and then lays up and doesn't workout at all. Disappointing speed rating last out at Mahoning Valley Race Cour at 6 furlongs. Don't feel this horse will improve too much in today's race.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - MANNFORD - With the highest last speed rating of 91, this gelding looks exceptional against these thoroughbreds.
