Texas Rangers vs. Chicago White Sox Preview and Predictions 05-17-2018

    16th May 2018 by Gracenote
the chicago white sox own the worst record in the majors at 10-29, which also represents the most horrific 39-game start in franchise history. chicago will look to avoid its 10th setback in the past 11 games when it opens a four-game home series against the texas rangers on thursday.

the white sox have allowed an average of 6.7 runs over their past 10 games, so wednesday's 3-2 loss to the pittsburgh pirates was at least progress from a pitching perspective. chicago has dropped five straight home games to fall to a major-league worst 3-15 in that category as it begins an eight-game homestand. texas halted a three-game slide in which it allowed 21 runs by posting a 5-1 victory over the seattle mariners on wednesday. rangers slugger joey gallo struck out three times for the third time in four games and is just 2-for-26 with 14 strikeouts over the past seven games.
tv: 8:10 p.m. et, fs southwest (texas), nbcs chicago

pitching matchup: rangers lh cole hamels (2-4, 3.48 era) vs. white sox rh james shields (1-4, 5.44)
hamels ended a six-start winless stretch when he tossed six shutout innings of one-hit ball while defeating the houston astros on friday. the 34-year-old has compiled a 1.93 era over his past four starts while allowing two or fewer earned runs in each of the outings. hamels is 2-0 with a 2.86 era in four career starts against the white sox with 30 strikeouts against just one walk.

shields is winless over his past eight starts (0-4) since beating the kansas city royals on opening day. the 36-year-old lost to the chicago cubs in his last turn when he gave up five runs and seven hits over six innings. shields is 7-3 with a 2.70 era in 15 career starts against the rangers and has struggled with shin-soo choo (7-for-20).
    walk-offs

    1. the rangers are just 22-38 at guaranteed rate field since the beginning of the 2001 campaign.

    2. chicago 1b jose abreu is batting .333 in may but has homered just once over his past 19 appearances.

    3. texas 2b rougned odor is 3-for-16 with eight strikeouts in five games since returning from a hamstring injury.

prediction: rangers 6, white sox 4

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Los Angeles Angels Preview and Predictions 05-17-2018

      17th May 2018 by Gracenote
c.j. cron, traded by the los angeles angels in february after struggling to find regular playing time, is excelling as an everyday starter with the tampa bay rays. the first baseman/designated hitter carries a nine-game hitting streak into thursday's return to anaheim, where the rays are beginning a four-game series against his former team.

cron has reached base safely in a career-high 22 consecutive contests and was a key factor wednesday, when he helped tampa bay complete a three-game sweep of kansas city by going 2-for-4 with a solo homer - his second in two nights - and three runs scored. "i know the home runs are great and he's done that throughout his career, but the at-bats he's having, finding ways to get hits, and then he did it on the bases, too," manager kevin cash told reporters. "he's helped us a lot. i'm glad he's getting hot at the right time to go into anaheim." the angels opened the week by dropping two of three to houston, including wednesday's 2-0 loss to justin verlander, who threw a complete-game five-hitter. two-way sensation shohei ohtani, expected to start sunday's series finale on the mound, looks to bounce back from a rare off-night at the plate after going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts wednesday.
tv: 10:07 p.m. et, fs sun (tampa bay), fs west (los angeles)
pitching matchup: rays rh chris archer (2-3, 5.64 era) vs. angels lh tyler skaggs (3-2, 3.07)

archer tossed seven innings saturday against baltimore but allowed six runs and seven hits in the 6-3 loss. the two-time all-star has given up four runs or more in eight of his last 14 starts dating back to sept. 8, 2017. ian kinsler is 4-for-25 with eight strikeouts against archer, who owns a 5-1 record and 2.55 era in seven career starts against the angels, including 3-1 with a 2.45 era in five outings at angel stadium.
skaggs turned in another strong outing friday, allowing two runs with seven strikeouts over six frames against minnesota. the 26-year-old native californian has struck out at least seven batters in three straight starts after reaching that total once in his first five outings. skaggs is facing tampa bay for the second time after allowed five runs over six innings may 15, 2014.
      walk-offs

      1. the rays are 23-10 at angel stadium since the start of the 2010 season, including 7-1 in their last eight games.

      2. the angels optioned jaime barria to triple-a salt lake city and recalled fellow rhp eduardo paredes.

      3. tampa bay placed of carlos gomez on the 10-day disabled list with a right groin injury and recalled inf christian arroyo from triple-a durham.

      prediction: rays 6, angels 3

Detroit Tigers vs. Seattle Mariners Preview and Predictions 05-17-2018

        16th May 2018 by Gracenote
the detroit tigers won a series from seattle last weekend and look for more success when they open a four-game set against the host mariners on thursday. detroit notched a pair of one-run wins while taking two of three from the mariners at comerica park.

the finale in detroit is when seattle second baseman robinson cano suffered a broken hand when hit by a pitch with the news getting much worse two days later when he was suspended for 80 games due to violating major league baseball's performance-enhancing drug policy. center fielder dee gordon, a gold glove second baseman, is now taking grounders in preparation to move to the position after manager scott servais initially said he wasn't an option. the mariners lost 5-1 to the texas rangers on wednesday, while the tigers fell for just the second time in six games when they lost 6-0 to the cleveland indians. detroit right fielder nicholas castellanos struck out three times in four hitless at-bats and is 1-for-8 over the last two games after missing the previous two due to a finger injury.
tv: 10:10 p.m. et, fs detroit, root northwest (seattle)
pitching matchup: tigers lh matthew boyd (2-3, 3.21 era) vs. mariners lh marco gonzales (3-3, 5.31)

boyd grew up in the seattle area and will be making his first career start (and second appearance) at safeco field. the 27-year-old defeated the mariners last saturday in detroit when he gave up three runs and three hits over six innings. boyd has pitched at least six innings in six of his seven starts this season and is holding batters to a .212 average.
gonzales lost while matched up against boyd last week and gave up four runs and 10 hits over six innings. the 26-year-old has pitched six innings in each of his last four turns after totaling just 10 1/3 innings during a three-start stretch. gonzales has struggled in three home starts, going 0-1 with a 7.07 era while allowing opponents to bat .333.

        walk-offs

        1. tigers cf leonys martin (hamstring) is expected to come off the disabled list at some point in the series.

        2. seattle dh nelson cruz (foot) will miss his second straight game but is expected to avoid a dl stint.

        3. detroit of jacoby jones (hip) departed wednesday's game, underwent an mri exam and manager ron gardenhire said jones will be evaluated further thursday in seattle.

        prediction: tigers 4, mariners 3

Colorado Rockies vs. San Francisco Giants Preview and Predictions 05-17-2018

          16th May 2018 by Gracenote
the colorado rockies had a day off wednesday, allowing right-hander chad bettis to celebrate a special anniversary -- the one year mark since he underwent his final chemotherapy treatment following testicular surgery. bettis will be on the mound thursday when the rockies resume their nine-game road trip with the first of four at the san francisco giants.

a 14-game winner in 2016, bettis did not pitch until mid-august last year and finished 2-4 in nine starts, but he already has won four times in eight outings this season. third baseman nolan arenado had a four-game hitting streak snapped in wednesday's 4-0 loss at san diego but is a career .311 hitter with 21 homers in 88 games versus san francisco. the giants had a three-game hitting streak halted and were denied a sweep in wednesday's 6-3 loss to visiting cincinnati despite brandon belt's solo home run that gave him the team lead with nine. belt has gone deep in each of the last three games and is 10-for-23 during a five-game hitting streak.
tv: 7:05 p.m. et, nbcs bay area (san francisco), at&t sportsnet-rocky mountain (colorado)
pitching matchup: rockies rh chad bettis (4-1, 3.12 era) vs. giants rh jeff samardzija (1-2, 6.94)

bettis was knocked around last time out, matching his shortest outing of the season when he was tagged for seven runs and 10 hits over five innings in a no-decision versus milwaukee. not surprisingly, bettis has been much better away from coors field, compiling a 4-1 record and 1.35 era in five road starts as opposed to a 6.89 era at home. belt (7-for-16) and outfielder andrew mccutchen (4-for-8) have worn out bettis.
samardzija was one out from getting through six innings for the first time this season when he surrendered a two-run blast and wound up charged with five runs over 5 2/3 innings in a no-decision at pittsburgh. he lasted four innings in his previous turn, giving up five runs in a loss at philadelphia. ian desmond (10-for-24), arenado (12-for-29) and gerardo parra (12-for-30) are batting .400 or above against samardzija.
          walk-offs

          1. giants ss brandon crawford is 10-for-13 over the last four games.

          2. desmond is 3-for-29 over the past eight games.

          3. giants ace madison bumgarner (finger) threw a 30-pitch bullpen wednesday and will toss another one friday or saturday.

          prediction: rockies 5, giants 3

                    Thursday, May 17

                    Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

                    Streaking:
Caleb Smith, Miami Marlins (2-4, 3.63 ERA, $-101)

In a year we never thought we'd see a Marlins' starting pitcher appearing as our Streaking Starter, Caleb Smith gets the spot today and is the second member of Miami's rotation to hold this elite position - "Jarlin the Marlin" made the cut a couple of weeks ago.

Over his last three starts, Smith is 2-1, owns an ERA of 1.00, a WHIP of 0.89, and an opponent's on-base percentage of .235. It's a slow day for streaking starters, but these numbers are legit.

Smith gets the start at home as a +140 underdog against Kenta Maeda and the struggling Los Angeles Dodgers in today's lone afternoon affair.

                    Slumping:
Andrew Triggs, Oakland Athletics (3-1, 5.31 ERA, $191)

Andrew Triggs has been OK so far this season. Not great, not horrible. We'll focus on his recent performances on the road for this spot. In his last two away appearances he owns a team win/loss of 0-2, an ERA of 10.00, a WHIP of 2.1111, and he has allowed four home runs over nine innings of work.

Triggs gets the ball on the road in Toronto today as a +115 underdog against Aaron Sanchez and the Jays.

                    Thursday's Top Trends

                    * Dodgers are 1-10 in their last 11 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400. -140 today at Marlins.
                    * Over is 7-0-1 in Chad Kuhl's last eight starts overall. Padres/Pirates total: 8.
                    * Athletics are 3-13 in their last 16 games at Rogers Centre in Toronto. +110 today at Blue Jays.
                    * Phillies are 10-1 in their last 11 vs. National League Central. +125 today at Cardinals.
                    * White Sox are 1-8 in their last 9 vs. American League West. +115 today vs. Rangers.
                    * Tigers are 0-7 in Matthew Boyd's last seven road starts. +165 today at Mariners.

                    Weather Watch

The only game that could potentially be impacted by weather is in Atlanta where the Braves are hosting the Cubs in the final game of their busy head-to-head week. There is expected to be thunderstorms in Georgia this evening with a 50-60 percent chance of rain at SunTrust Park. The Cubs are slight -115 road favorites tonight.

                    Ump of the Day

Alfonzo "Put It On A Tee" Marquez will be calling balls and strike this evening in Atlanta if the rain doesn't wash the game away. Over is 6-3 in cames called by Marquez this season (7-3 in his last 10 overall) and he owns a very low strike percentage of 62.6.

The total tonight for the game betweeen the Cubs and Braves is set at 8.5.

NHL Eastern Conference final Game 4 betting preview and odds: Lightning at Capitals

Tampa Bay Lightning at Washington Capitals (-110, 6)

                        Capitals lead series 2-1.

The Tampa Bay Lightning fought their way back in the series with a vastly improved performance and the reward is a chance to even the Eastern Conference finals Thursday night when they visit the Washington Capitals for Game 4. All-Stars Victor Hedman, Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov combined for seven points as the Lightning recorded a 4-2 victory Tuesday in Washington after dropping the first two games of the series at home.

“We believed all along,” Stamkos, who has scored a goal in five of the last six games, told reporters. “We knew we weren’t good enough, and credit to them, they played really good hockey the first two games. We needed to make adjustments. We did that. We worked on it. The players went out there and did what we needed to do.” Tampa Bay was much tighter defensively despite allowing 38 shots overall, and scored twice on the power play to improve to 5-for-12 with the man advantage in the series and extend their streak to eight games with at least one. Evgeny Kuznetsov finished with 12 shots on net and a goal for the Capitals in Game 3 while linemate Alex Ovechkin did not have a point despite accumulating nine shots, but coach Barry Trotz told the media his team was “off a little bit” and will be better Thursday. “We believe in each other,” Ovechkin told reporters. “We know exactly what we have to do. Nobody said it was going to be easy. They’re not going to give us two wins in a row in our house. We just have to play more desperate and play smarter.”
