james paxton aims to continue his string of stellar performances when the seattle mariners host the texas rangers on wednesday in the third contest of a four-game set. the left-hander is 3-0 with a 1.64 over his last six appearances, a stretch that includes a no-hitter against toronto and a 16-strikeout performance against oakland.

paxton has allowed just 12 total hits in 31 innings over his past four starts and will look to stymie a texas squad that had 12 hits - six for extra bases - in tuesday's 9-5 triumph. rougned odor had a three-run tiebreaking double in the ninth inning and ronald guzman went 4-for-4 with three rbis as the rangers won for the fifth time in their past eight games. texas handed seattle only its second setback in its past 11 games and the mariners' pitching fell apart - the carnage included eight walks and two hit by pitches - after allowing just 20 runs over the previous 10 games. seattle shortstop jean segura (concussion) returned from a two-game absence to go 3-for-5 and he is a stellar 10-for-17 over his past four contests.

moore will be activated from the disabled list prior to wednesday's outing after being sidelined with right knee soreness. the 28-year-old is winless over his last five starts and pitched four innings or fewer in three of them. moore is 1-1 with a 2.03 era in five career starts against seattle and has kept kyle seager (3-for-14) in check.
paxton allowed one run, three hits, walked none and struck out 11 in seven innings while defeating the minnesota twins in his last turn. the 29-year-old has struck out 90 and allowed just 47 hits over 69 2/3 innings while sporting a stellar 0.96 whip. paxton is just 2-4 with a 5.10 era in 11 career starts against the rangers and his worst outing of this season came against texas on april 21 when he gave up five runs and six hits over four innings.

jose urena looks to avoid becoming the first miami marlins pitcher to start a season 0-8 when he takes the mound wednesday against the host san diego padres. miami opened the four-game series between the two last-place teams with monday's 7-2 victory before the padres answered with a 9-5 win on tuesday.

rookie outfielder franmil reyes belted his third home run and first baseman eric hosmer went 3-for-4 with an rbi and two runs scored tuesday as the padres won for the third time in their last eight games. the padres continue to exercise patience with 23-year-old outfielder manuel margot, who had 13 homers as a rookie last year but has just 30 hits in 147 at-bats this season. "we're committed to watching him continue to play on a pretty consistent basis and show that he can make the adjustment here," manager andy green told reporters. "he's putting in a relentless amount of work. we're confident manny's going to battle through the other side." miami is facing a similar situation with promising center fielder lewis brinson, who committed two errors on tuesday and is batting .157 with 63 strikeouts in 52 games.

urena matched his career high with seven strikeouts but received a no-decision last friday after allowing four runs on a pair of homers over six frames against washington. the 26-year-old native of the dominican republic is winless over his past 13 starts dating back to last september, a team record. freddy galvis is 4-for-13 against urena, who is 0-2 with a 4.22 era in two career starts against san diego.
richard saw his two-game winning streak come to an end last friday, when he gave up four runs and four hits in six innings in a 4-1 loss to the los angeles dodgers. the 34-year-old native of indiana has pitched at least seven innings and allowed three earned runs or fewer in three of his last four starts. richard has gone 3-2 with a 2.79 era in six career starts against miami but took the loss after giving up five runs over seven innings in his last meeting on aug. 27, 2017.

For Wednesday, back the Angels and Ohtani on the Run Line over the Tigers and Fiers.

Third game of four tonight as each team has taken turns winning in easy fashion - Tigers by 6 runs on Monday, Angels returning the favor by 7 runs last night.

Tonight it's all about Shohei Ohtani who heads back to the mound after an extended layoff (May 20th last start), and he takes a 2-0 mark his last 3 starts to the hill. For the year, the rookie is 4-1 with an ERA of 3.35, as he makes his first start against the Tigers.

Mike Fiers counters, and he is just 1-1 his last 3 starts, but that ERA approaching 5 - at 4.86! - is a tad troublesome when you have guys like Mike Trout in the lineup in the opposing dugout.

Ohtani working with added rest keeps the Tigers guessing tonight, as the Angels take the third of four tonight at Comerica Park.
