Kansas City Royals vs. Oakland Athletics Preview and Predictions 06-09-2018

    9th June 2018 by Gracenote
the oakland athletics have had their way with the struggling kansas city royals this month and hope to continue the trend when they host the third contest of their four-game series on saturday. oakland began june by winning two of three in kansas city, outscoring the royals 25-6 in the set, and have taken the first two games of this series by an 11-3 margin - including friday's 7-2 triumph.

khris davis registered his 17th career multi-homer performance - and second this season - with a pair of solo shots and jonathan lucroy collected three rbis as the athletics improved to 2-0 on its 10-game homestand. davis, who leads the team with 17 blasts, has gone deep four times over his last four contests. mike moustakas belted a two-run homer and alex gordon notched three of the seven hits recorded by the royals, who have lost six straight and seven of eight this month. moustakas leads kansas city with 42 rbis but posted just one over his previous seven contests.
tv: 4:05 p.m. et, fs kansas city, nbcs california (oakland)
pitching matchup: royals lh danny duffy (2-6, 5.81 era) vs. athletics rh chris bassitt (2016: 0-2, 6.11)

duffy escaped with a no-decision against the angels in los angeles on monday after yielding four runs on seven hits and three walks over five innings. the 29-year-old californian had put together back-to-back strong outings prior to that, allowing one run and four hits in both a win at texas (a season-high 7 2/3 innings) and a no-decision versus minnesota (six frames). duffy has yet to lose to oakland in his career, going 3-0 with a 3.44 era in six starts and one relief appearance.
bassitt is expected to be recalled from triple-a nashville to start in place of trevor cahill, who is nursing an achilles injury. the 29-year-old bassitt has not pitched in the majors since april 28, 2016 as he required tommy john surgery after surrendering seven runs on 10 hits and three walks over 3 2/3 innings in a loss at detroit. bassitt has made three career starts against kansas city, posting a 4.60 era without recording a decision.
    walk-offs

Cleveland Indians vs. Detroit Tigers Preview and Predictions 06-09-2018

      8th June 2018 by Gracenote
jason kipnis is slowly recovering from a rough start to the season and the cleveland indians' second baseman comes into the second of a four-game road series against the detroit tigers on saturday off one of his biggest hits of 2018. kipnis, who has raised his average 29 points since may 25 to .206, launched a tiebreaking three-run homer in the ninth inning friday for a 4-1 victory in the series opener.

kipnis is 16-for-52 with three homers and eight rbis over his last 13 games to add to an indians' offense that has averaged 5.6 runs during a 9-3 surge, giving them a comfortable lead atop the american league central. mike clevinger looks to keep it going for cleveland when he takes the mound saturday against fellow right-hander mike fiers in a battle of florida natives. the tigers have cooled off with five losses in their last seven games after a promising 8-2 stretch, and went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position during friday's setback - the third time in four games in which they scored one or zero runs. center fielder leonys martin has been detroit's hottest hitter of late, going 7-for-18 with a pair of doubles, a triple and a homer in his last five contests.
tv: 4:10 p.m. et, sto (cleveland), fs detroit
pitching matchup: indians rh mike clevinger (4-2, 3.36 era) vs. tigers rh mike fiers (5-3, 4.33)

fiers has struggled to go deep into games, but allowed two or fewer runs in four of his last six starts while going 3-1 during that stretch. the 32-year-old hollywood, fla., native completed at least six innings in just three of his 11 starts and has permitted 12 homers overall, including one or more in seven of the past eight outings. jose ramirez is 5-for-13 with a homer versus fiers, who is 3-1 with a 2.22 era in five career starts against the indians.
      walk-offs

      1. detroit rf nicholas castellanos has hit safely in 17 of his last 20 games - including the last four - to raise his average to .329.

      2. cleveland dh-1b edwin encarnacion boasts 15 rbis in his last 12 games despite being held without one the past three.

Seattle Mariners vs. Tampa Bay Rays Preview and Predictions 06-09-2018

        8th June 2018 by Gracenote
blake snell dominated seattle and was just as impressive as childhood idol felix hernandez in his last outing and looks to do both again on saturday when the tampa bay rays host the mariners in the third contest of a four-game set. snell struck out 12 and allowed two hits in six scoreless innings last weekend in seattle before the bullpen blew the lead in a 2-1 setback.

snell matched the american league record by striking out the first seven batters he faced and finished one shy of his career best for strikeouts. the seattle native hasn't allowed an earned run in his last three outings spanning 19 2/3 innings and he will attempt to halt a tampa bay losing streak that reached eight with friday's 4-3 loss to the mariners, who have won seven of their past eight games and 16 of their last 20. hernandez put together his best start of the season on sunday and ended a three-start winless stretch by allowing one run and five hits over a season-best eight innings. the veteran right-hander has usually fared well against tampa bay with a 9-2 mark and 1.89 era in 17 career starts, including a perfect game on aug. 15, 2012.
tv: 4:10 p.m. et, root northwest (seattle), fs sun (tampa bay)
pitching matchup: mariners rh felix hernandez (6-4, 5.33 era) vs. rays lh blake snell (7-3, 2.36)

hernandez flashed his former all-star form in sunday's matchup against snell and also matched his season best of seven strikeouts. the 32-year-old was touched up for five runs in three of his previous five turns and possessed a 7.16 era during the stretch. hernandez has struggled against carlos gomez (6-for-20, two homers) while shutting down c.j. cron (2-for-20 with one homer and nine strikeouts).
snell is 3-0 over his last four starts and has a stellar 0.74 era during the stretch. for the seaosn, the 25-year-old is limiting opposing batters to a .180 average and has fanned 88 in 76 1/3 innings. snell is 1-1 with an 0.55 era in three career starts against seattle and neither hot-hitting jean segura (0-for-6) nor slugger kyle seager (0-for-4) have a hit against him.
        walk-offs

        1. the mariners are 5-0 against the rays this season and have won 11 of the past 12 meetings.

        2. tampa bay ss adeiny hechavarria (hamstring) could begin a minor-league rehab stint as soon as monday.

        3. seattle placed rhps juan nicasio (knee) and dan altavilla (elbow) on the 10-day disabled list and recalled rhp mike morin and 1b daniel vogelbach - who had an rbi single on friday - from triple-a tacoma.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Cincinnati Reds Preview and Predictions 06-09-2018

            9th June 2018 by Gracenote
the visiting st. louis cardinals continue to dominate the cincinnati reds and will try to extend multiple impressive streaks when the teams play the middle contest of a three-game series on saturday. a 7-6 extra-inning victory in the opener friday night gave the cardinals 12 consecutive wins over their national league central division rivals, tied for the second-longest streak against the reds in franchise history.

st. louis also picked up its 10th straight triumph at great american ball park, which matches a 1930-31 streak as the club's longest on the road against cincinnati. jose martinez slugged a pair of homers in friday's win and is 11-for-22 with three home runs, three doubles and eight rbis during his six-game hitting streak. the reds forced extra innings with a two-run rally in the ninth but still wound up losing their 22nd home game, most in the majors, and they've dropped five of their last six overall. st. louis right-hander michael wacha took a no-hitter into the ninth inning sunday against pittsburgh and seeks an encore performance when he opposes luis castillo on saturday.
tv: 4:10 p.m. et, fs midwest (st. louis), fs ohio (cincinnati)
pitching matchup: cardinals rh michael wacha (7-1, 2.41 era) vs. reds rh luis castillo (4-6, 5.64)

wacha allowed a leadoff hit in the ninth inning against the pirates before departing with a season-high 111 pitches, striking out eight and walking two. the dominant outing left him 5-0 with a 1.60 era over a span of nine starts, which started with 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball against cincinnati on april 20. the 26-year-old is 10-1 with a 2.88 era in his career against the reds despite having some troubles with joey votto (13-for-36 with six extra-base hits) and scooter gennett (10-for-31).
castillo lasted six innings just once in his last four starts and was knocked out after 4 2/3 at san diego on sunday. home runs remain a major issue for the dominincan republic native, who has allowed at least one in eight of his last nine outings. the 25-year-old allowed three runs in five innings to get the loss earlier in the year against the cardinals and he is 0-2 with a 4.76 era in two career meetings.
            walk-offs

            1. reds of scott schebler went 4-for-6 on friday to record his fourth straight multi-hit effort.

New York Yankees vs. New York Mets Preview and Predictions 06-09-2018

                  8th June 2018 by Gracenote
the new york yankees took on the best their crosstown rivals could throw at them and still walked away victoriously. the yankees will try to make it two straight in the subway series when they continue a three-game set at the stumbling new york mets on saturday.

a tiebreaking two-run homer by brett gardner in the top of the eighth inning lifted the yankees to a 4-1 win over the mets and ace jacob degrom in friday's opener, giving the bronx bombers a 32-9 record since a 9-9 start and thrusting them back into first place in the american league east. the yankees have won five straight over the mets, who also set a season standard with their seventh consecutive loss overall - during which they've scored a total of eight runs - and extended their home skid to nine straight. to make matters worse, they placed closer jeurys familia (shoulder) on the 10-day disabled list friday and announced that sunday's scheduled starter, noah syndergaard, would remain on the dl after he experienced swelling in his injured finger. the hosts will hope for some help from lefty steven matz, who gets the nod saturday opposite domingo german for the yankees.
                  tv: 7:15 p.m. et, fox
pitching matchup: yankees rh domingo german (0-4, 5.44 era) vs. mets lh steven matz (2-4, 3.42)

german is winless in 17 career appearances (five starts) and has lost each of his last three outings. he gave up four runs in a career-high 6 2/3 frames in a setback at detroit on monday. opponents are hitting .231 against the 25-year-old - who will be making his debut in interleague play - and he has 44 strikeouts in 41 1/3 innings overall.
matz left a start two turns ago due to a finger issue but showed no effects while giving up two runs in a season-high seven innings against the chicago cubs on sunday. he struck out seven and yielded five hits in the outing, which left him with a 2.32 era since the end of april. the 27-year-old new york native has a 7.63 era in three career starts against the city rivals, and all that was before the yankees added giancarlo stanton, who is 4-for-10 with two home runs versus matz.
                  walk-offs

                  1. mets of yoenis cespedes (hip) went 0-for-2 in a rehab game with double-a binghamton on friday.

                  2. the yankees have 51 homers in 29 road games, counting the suspended contest with washington.

                  3. mets of brandon nimmo hit a leadoff homer friday and has six long balls over his last 16 games.

Atlanta Braves vs. Los Angeles Dodgers Preview and Predictions 06-09-2018

                    9th June 2018 by Gracenote
the los angeles dodgers literally are powering through their latest wave of injuries with 22 home runs over their last seven games. the surging dodgers belted a season-high five homers in friday's 7-3 series-opening win over the visiting atlanta braves and will look to maintain their hot streak when the teams continue their three-game set on saturday.

yasmani grandal homered twice while joc pederson, max muncy and cody bellinger also went deep as the dodgers improved to 16-5 over their last 21 games. pederson and bellinger have combined for eight home runs over the last four games, but the dodgers' injury-plagued starting rotation received a scare friday when rookie star walker buehler exited in the sixth inning with rib soreness following another dominant performance. atlanta lost for the 13th time in their last 16 contests at dodger stadium despite a solo homer from johan camargo. freddie freeman doubled in four at-bats and is 6-for-12 with two blasts and four rbis over his last three games.

pitching matchup: braves rh anibal sanchez (1-0, 2.16 era) vs. dodgers lh alex wood (1-4, 4.48)

sanchez settled for a no-decision against washington on sunday after giving up two unearned runs and two hits over seven innings. "he's got a great feel for pitching and knows what he's doing," manager brian snitker told reporters. "i think his stuff is better than what i was led to believe when we signed him. he can change speeds, and he locates the fastball well." chase utley is 15-for-34 against sanchez, who owns a 3.21 era in five career starts versus the dodgers.
pitching on seven days' rest on sunday after dealing with hamstring cramps, wood struggled against colorado as he allowed six runs in two innings. the 27-year-old native of north carolina owns an impressive 60-to-13 strikeout-to-walk ratio but has given up a total of 11 runs over 7 1/3 frames in his last two starts. ender inciarte is 5-for-14 against wood, who is 1-2 with a 6.75 era in three career starts versus atlanta.
                    walk-offs

                    1. dodgers 3b justin turner (sore left wrist) was not in the lineup friday for the third time in the last four games and is listed as day-to-day.

                    2. atlanta of ronald acuna (knee) resumed baseball activities on friday and could begin a minor-league rehab assignment in a few days.

                    3. los angeles lhp rich hill (blister) will throw a simulated game saturday and is expected to rejoin the rotation next weekend.

                    prediction: dodgers 5, braves 4

                              STREAKING AND SLUMPING STARTING PITCHERS

                              Streaking:
Blake Snell, Tampa Bay Rays (7-3, 2.36 ERA, $115)

Snell might be the only thing the dozens of Rays fans in Tampa Bay have to cheer about these days. The club is 0-8 in its last eight games and 14.5 games back of the New York Yankees in the American League East standings.

But this young lefty is proving to be one for the future. Snell struck out 12 and allowed just two hits in six innings of work against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday and extended his streak of quality starts to four games. He owns a miniscule 0.51 ERA over his last three appearances and he hasn’t allowed a home run since the second week of May.

                              Slumping:
Mike Minor, Texas Rangers (4-4, 5.76 ERA, $13)

Minor hasn’t produced a quality start in any of his last five appearances and the Rangers are 1-4 in those five games. Opponents are batting .303 against the 30-year-old lefty since his last start in April and he owns a 1.51 WHIP (walks + hits per inning) over his last seven starts.
