The Arizona Diamondbacks opened the season 24-11 but the team's six-game NL West lead turned into a 1 1/2-game deficit when they lost 15 of 17 from May 9 through May 27, thanks to an offense that averaged just two runs per game and only topped that mark four times during the slide. However, with Paul Goldschmidt locked into one of the best grooves of his career at the plate, the Diamondbacks have won nine of 12 as they get set to host the opener of a three-game set with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday (35-29 Arizona now leads the NL West by 2 1/2 games). Goldschmidt collected two hits on May 28 as the Diamondbacks put an emphatic end to their skid with a 12-5 win against Cincinnati and he hasn't stopped hitting since, batting .467 with six HRs and 15 RBI during his team's recent 9-3 surge. The Pittsburgh Pirates broke out of a recent offensive funk on the road Sunday with a 7-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs (Pittsburgh had lost the first two games of the series 3-1 and 2-0). Sunday's victory was a much-needed one for the Pirates, who are 6-16 over their last 22 contests and trail Milwaukee by seven games in the NL Central, after holding a one-half game lead in the division as recently as May 17.
The pitching matchup tonight features Pittsburgh's Joe Musgrove (2-1, 1.89 ERA) going up against Arizona lefty Patrick Corbin (6-2, 2.87 ERA). Musgrove missed almost all of the first two months of the season with a shoulder issue, not making his 2018 debut until May 25. He held the Cubs and Cardinals to a total of just one run across 14 innings to notch a pair of victories in his first two outings but he was much less effective in Tuesday's 5-0 loss against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He gave up his first two HRs of the season while surrendering four runs (three earned) over five innings in the setback. Musgrove made his only career appearance against Arizona last season, working 1 1/3 scoreless relief innings.
Patrick Corbin bounced back from the worst outing of his 2018 season (allowed six runs in six innings in a 7-4 loss to the Reds) to win 3-2 at San Francisco on Tuesday, allowing one run while striking out seven over 6 1/3 innings. He has shown some vulnerability over his last two home starts in giving up 10 runs spanning 12 innings but is still 4-2 with a 2.93 ERA in seven starts at Chase Field. Corbin has made a modest four career starts against Pittsburgh and hasn't had much success, going 1-2 with a 5.32 ERA.
The Pirates were a season-high nine games above .500 after a victory over the San Diego Padres on May 17 but have since lost seven straight series, while going 6-16. In contrast, as noted above, the Goldschmidt-led D'backs are surging. Pittsburgh's Musgrove has seen limited action in 2018 but Arizona's Corbin looks as if he regaining his All-Star form of 2013. He not only sports an excellent 2.93 ERA through 13 starts but he also owns an outstanding 0.94 WHIP plus batters are hitting only .188 against him.

Chicago will be starting Jose Quintana in this one. The Cubs southpaw has a 4-1 record with a spectacular 0.63 ERA in his 6 career starts versus the Brewers. Also, the under is 4-2 in Quintana's 6 road starts this season as he has compiled a sparkling 2.62 ERA in those 6 games. The Cubs enter this game on a 6-1 run to the under. The under is 7-3 in Milwaukee's last 10 games. This season the Brewers are 20-11 to the under in games against teams with a winning record. The Cubs are 16-8 to the under in games with a total set at 8 or 8.5 runs this season. With these two teams currently in a battle at the top of the Central Division, look for a tight, low-scoring battle in this one. Wade LeBlanc has made the most of his time in the Mariners starting rotation, but we think he’s in over his head here. The Angels go with Andrew Heaney (3-4, 3.12 ERA) who comes in off a spectacular effort against the Royals on Tuesday, going nine scoreless, while giving up one hit and one walk while striking out four. Heaney would throw 81 of his 116 pitches for strikes and to go along with his solid 58:19 K:BB this season, note that he is also holding opponents to a .218 batting average (additionally note that he’s posted a sharp 2.59 ERA in all “night” contests.) LeBlanc (1-0, 2.94) earned a no-decision in his latest outing against Houston on Wednesday, giving up three earned runs off seven hits and three walks over four innings. The Mariners took two of three from the Rays over the weekend, but we think they’ll stumble in their first game back in this unfavorable matchup on the mound. Consider LA in this one.

I'll take my chances here with the Cubs as a short road favorite in Monday's series opener against the Brewers. This is simply too good a price to pass up on with Chicago right now. The Cubs lost their series finale yesterday against the Pirates, but are still 11-3 over their last 14 games. Not to mention they are 7-1 against the Brewers this season. A big reason for their success against Milwaukee is Jose Quintana, who has faced them twice this season and hasn't allowed a run in 13 innings. Quintana has a 0.63 ERA and 0.698 WHIP in 6 career starts against the Brewers. He's also 4-2 with a 2.62 ERA in 6 road starts this season and owns a 2.00 ERA in 5 night starts in 2018.
