Astros vs. Mariners Preview and Predictions

    by Gracenote on 07/29/2018

The Houston Astros had a chance to pad their lead in the American League West over the weekend but were instead swept by the last-place Texas Rangers. The Seattle Mariners, who sit in second place in the AL West and host the Astros in the opener of a three-game series on Monday, failed to take advantage on Friday and Saturday but avoided their own sweep and pulled within four games of the division lead on Sunday.

Houston pitchers notched a franchise-record 19 strikeouts on Sunday but the offense went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and the top five hitters in the lineup combined to go 1-for-19. "We got swept," right-hander Lance McCullers Jr, who recorded the first 11 of those strikeouts, told reporters. "We got swept by the worst team in the division, record-wise. It's always tough to swallow. Baseball's a lot of games, man. We're still first place in the division and we have a big, big series in Seattle. We've got to turn the page." The Mariners, who scored seven first-inning runs and held on for an 8-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday, will play 10 of their next 23 games against the Astros as they attempt to narrow the gap in the division. Seattle will send ace James Paxton to the mound on Monday while Houston counters with two-time All-Star Gerrit Cole.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet - Southwest (Houston), ROOT Northwest (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Gerrit Cole (10-2, 2.54 ERA) vs. Mariners LH James Paxton (8-4, 3.70)

Cole did not factor in the decision at Colorado on Tuesday despite allowing two runs and striking out nine over 6 1/3 innings. The former No. 1 overall pick is up to 186 strikeouts - 10 shy of matching his 2017 total accomplished in 33 starts - and sits fourth in the AL in the category behind Chris Sale (207) Trevor Bauer (192) and teammate Justin Verlander (190). Cole did not allow an earned run at Seattle on April 18 and scattered five hits over seven innings to earn a win.

Paxton is set to come off the 10-day disabled list and make his first start since July 12 after recovering from inflammation in his lower back. The Canada native served up a pair of home runs in two-thirds of an inning before being lifted from that July 12 outing at Colorado and is trying to rediscover the form that saw him strike out at least nine in four consecutive turns bridging June and July. Paxton won his first two starts against Houston this season, allowing a total of two runs in 13 2/3 innings while striking out 13.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Astros 1B Tyler White, who was recalled when reigning MVP Jose Altuve was placed on the DL on Saturday, went 3-for-3 in Sunday's setback.

    2. Seattle RHP Edwin Diaz has not allowed an earned run in any of his last 13 appearances.

    3. Houston 1B Yuli Gurriel is 2-for-29 over his last seven games.

    PREDICTION: Mariners 2, Astros 1

Play on: Red Sox -144 at betonline

1* Free Pick on Boston Red Sox -144
Boston will have no problem cashing in at home against the Phillies in Monday's series opener. The Red Sox own the best record in baseball at 74-33 and enter on a 3-game winning streak after defeating the Twins 3-0 on Sunday. Boston is 17-4 in their last 21 overall and 13-2 in their last 15 at home.
Philadelphia is sitting on top the NL East, but just lost 3 straight at Cincinnati over the weekend. The offense progressively got worse in each game, scoring 4 runs on Friday, 2 on Saturday and getting shutout on Sunday. Hard to see the Phillies' bats getting going here against David Price, who has pitched well at home and is fresh off a start at Detroit where he threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings.
Red Sox are also 6-1 in their last 7 during game 1 of a series, 40-11 in their last 51 interleague games and 11-2 in Price's last 13 starts. Take Boston!

                    MLB | Rangers vs Diamondbacks
                    Play on: Diamondbacks -1½ +105 at 5Dimes

Jack’s Free Pick Monday: Arizona Diamondbacks -1.5 (+105)
The Arizona Diamondbacks have won three straight and six of their last eight coming in. They have won five times by four runs or more during this stretch. I expect them to win by at least two runs at home tonight over the Texas Rangers.
The Rangers are in a letdown spot here after a shocking sweep of the Astros in Houston over the weekend. Now they send perhaps the worst starter in baseball to the mound in Martin Perez, who is 2-4 with a 7.08 ERA and 2.017 WHIP in eight starts this season.
Robbie Ray hasn’t matched the dominant numbers he put up a year ago, but he has also been hurt. He has posted 81 K’s in 60 2/3 innings across 12 starts this season, so the stuff is still there. And he’s coming off a great start in which he held the Cubs to just one run and five base runners in 7 innings on the road last time out.
Ray is 14-1 (+13.5 units) against the money line after giving up one or fewer earned runs in his last outing over the last two seasons. Arizona is winning by 5.2 runs per game in this spot. The Diamondbacks are 20-6 in Ray’s last 26 starts vs. a team with a losing record. The Rangers are 0-4 in Perez’s last four starts. Bet the Diamondbacks on the Run Line Monday.

Play on: Astros -109 at BetPhoenix

The Astros will start right-hander Gerrit Cole (10-2, 2.54 ERA) vs their hosts Seattle in the first game of this series. Cole is 2-0 with a 0.56 ERA in two career starts against the Mariners, including a 7-1 victory April 18 in Houston in which he allowed one unearned run on five hits in seven innings. He is my choice to help us cash tonight vs the Mariners and their ace starter Paxton .
COLE is 12-1 against the money line in road games vs. poor baserunning teams - averaging 0.5 or less SB's/game over the last 2 seasons. (Team's Record)
I know the Astros looked asleep at the proverbial wheel in a 3 game sweep at the hands of the Texas Rangers on the weekend but it must be noted that the Astros are 22-4 against the money line in road games against division opponents this season and 23-5 against the money line after 3 consecutive games versus a division rival this season.
The Mariners have lost 23 straight on the moneyline after All-Star break as a underdog in the first game of a series with no rest when they are off a road game in which they left 18+ men on base, which happened yesterday vs the Angels.
Astros are 8-1 in the last 9 meetings in Seattle.
                        Play on the Houston
Astros to win on the moneyline

                          MLB | Indians vs Twins
Play on: Twins +115 at MyBookie

The Minnesota Twins enter tonight's game with an upper hand on the Indians. Minnesota is 5-0 ATS in its last 5 games when playing at home vs Cleveland and 7-1 ATS overall against the Indians. With the Twins playing at home, Santana will look to make a lasting impression as it might be his last start with the Twins before the trade deadline. Expect the Twins to give the Indians a run for their money and pick up a big win vs the Indians.

1* on San Francisco Giants -102
The Key: The San Francisco Giants need wins and a lot of them to stay in the NL West race. The Padres sit at 42-66 and are just going through the motions right now. The Padres have lost 5 straight and are just 8-28 in their last 36 games overall. Eric Lauer won’t be able to stop the bleeding. He is 5-7 with a 5.29 ERA and 1.70 WHIP in 17 starts this year and it’s amazing that he even still has a spot in the rotation. Derek Holland is 5-8 with a 4.01 ERA in 19 starts, 3-5 with a 3.90 ERA in 11 road starts, and 0-1 with a 1.46 ERA in his last 2 starts coming in. The Giants are 6-0 in Holland’s last 6 starts when their opponent allows 5 runs or more in their previous game. The Padres are 3-14 in their last 17 home games. San Diego is 4-10 in Lauer’s last 14 starts. Take San Francisco.

Miami (Chen) @ Atlanta (Teheran) 7:35 PM ET
                                Game# 901-902
                                Play On: Miami +153
Atlanta’s Julio Teheran has made 2 starts against Miami this season and posted an atrocious 12.54 ERA while doing so. Atlanta is coming off a 4-1 win over the Dodgers on Sunday. Nevertheless, the Braves are a dismal 1-5 in their last 6 following a win in their previous game. Since 2016, Teheran is a money draining 7-17 in his team starts as a money line home favorite of -110 or greater. Atlanta has lost 8 of its last 11 home games.
Miami’s Wei-Yen Chen has a respectable 3.97 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 2 starts against Atlanta this year. He will be facing an Atlanta team that’s averaged a paltry 2.2 runs scored and 6.0 hits per game during its last 5 outings. Wei-Yen Chen has an uninspiring 5.66 ERA during 16 starts in 2018. However, Atlanta is an abysmal 5-19 in 2018 when facing a National League starting pitcher with an ERA of 5.40 or worse. Miami has held its own on the road recently by going 10-9 during their previous 19 away games. Bet on Miami for a money line underdog wager for my Monday 7/30 MLB free pick of the day.
