Astros vs. Dodgers Preview and Predictions

    by Gracenote on 08/04/2018

There is a definite postseason feel in the air this weekend at Dodger Stadium, where the Los Angeles Dodgers and Houston Astros are meeting in a rematch of last year's World Series. After opening the three-game interleague set with a 2-1 victory behind ace Justin Verlander, Houston aims for its fourth straight win on Saturday.

Verlander struck out 14 batters in 7 2/3 innings and Hector Rendon recorded his 11th save Friday as the Astros improved to a major league-best 38-17 on the road. George Springer returned after missing one game with a sore left shoulder and delivered an RBI double in three at-bats from the leadoff spot, but Martin Maldonado went 0-for-2 with a walk and is hitless in his last 32 at-bats. Los Angeles set Dodger Stadium records for runs scored and homers (seven) in Thursday's 21-5 win over Milwaukee but was held to four hits in Friday's series opener. Joc Pederson homered in the first inning for the second straight game, but the Astros cooled off the red-hot Yasmani Grandal, who went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts.

TV: 9:10 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet-Southwest (Houston), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Lance McCullers Jr. (10-6, 4.06 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Kenta Maeda (7-6, 3.48)

McCullers lost his third straight start on Sunday, allowing four runs - three earned - and six hits while striking out 11 across 5 1/3 innings against Texas. The 24-year-old Floridian retired the first 11 batters he faced and permitted just one baserunner in the first four frames before running into trouble in the sixth. McCullers faced the Dodgers twice in last season's World Series, giving up three runs over 7 2/3 innings.

Maeda served up a three-run homer in his second straight start and took the loss after giving up four runs over 4 2/3 innings against Milwaukee on Monday. The 30-year-old had posted a 2.34 ERA over his previous 10 starts but exited early versus the Brewers after throwing 102 pitches. Maeda made four relief appearances against Houston in last season's World Series, giving up one run and five hits over 5 2/3 innings.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. Houston RHP Roberto Osuna (suspension) is expected to be activated prior to Sunday's series finale.

    2. The Dodgers placed Erik Goeddel on the 10-day disabled list with right lat inflammation and activated fellow RHP John Axford, who was acquired from Toronto on Tuesday.

    3. The Astros placed RHP Chris Devenski on the 10-day DL with left hamstring tightness and recalled LHP Cionel Perez from Triple-A Fresno.

    PREDICTION: Astros 5, Dodgers 4

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Seattle Mariners Preview and Predictions 08-04-2018 in MLB

MLB Previews 4th August 2018 by Gracenote
      by Gracenote on 08/04/2018

James Paxton tossed a no-hitter when he faced Toronto earlier this season and looks for another strong outing when the Seattle Mariners host the Blue Jays on Saturday for the third contest of their four-game series. The Canadian left-hander struck out seven and walked three while stifling the Blue Jays in the May 8 contest in Toronto.

A Seattle team that was outscored 14-5 while losing the first two games of the series could use another strong effort from Paxton, but the 29-year-old told reporters that the no-hitter means nothing when he steps on the mound Saturday. "I will definitely look at that game and how I am going to pitch to guys and how they approached me," Paxton told reporters. "But it will be a different game. Your stuff is always different." The Mariners are just 7-15 over their last 22 games and Toronto is taking advantage of the struggling club as it registered 11 hits - two homers - in each of the first two contests. Toronto's Randal Grichuk recorded a season-high four hits on Friday and is 8-for-19 with four doubles over his last four games.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, Sportsnet (Toronto), ROOT Northwest (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Marco Estrada (4-8, 4.90 ERA) vs. Mariners LH James Paxton (9-4, 3.49)

Estrada lost to Oakland in his last turn as he gave up four runs and five hits over four innings. The start was the first in 27 days for the 35-year-old Mexican after he suffered a gluteus strain in the first inning against the New York Mets on July 3. Estrada is 2-3 with a 3.90 ERA in five career starts against the Mariners and has struggled versus Nelson Cruz (6-for-13, two homers).

Paxton returned from a back injury to defeat Houston in his last outing by scattering three hits over seven scoreless innings. He lost his previous two starts, including a setback against the Los Angeles Angels on July 12 in which he retired just two batters before exiting due to lower back soreness. Paxton is 3-2 with a 4.71 ERA in five career turns against the Blue Jays.

      WALK-OFFS

      1. Mariners 2B Dee Gordon (ankle) was in Friday's lineup after departing the series opener and went 0-for-4.

      2. Toronto activated CF Kevin Pillar (collarbone), who went 0-for-3 on Friday, from the 10-day disabled list and optioned RHP Brandon Cumpton to Triple-A Buffalo.

      3. Seattle placed Juan Nicasio (knee) on the 10-day DL and recalled fellow RHP Chasen Bradford from Triple-A Tacoma.

PREDICTION: Mariners 4, Blue Jays 3

BC Lions vs. Calgary Stampeders Preview and Predictions 08-04-2018 in CFL

CFL Previews 1st August 2018 by Gracenote
        by Gracenote on 08/01/2018

The Calgary Stampeders look to remain unbeaten when they host the BC Lions in a West Division clash Saturday. The Stampeders cruised to an impressive 34-22 road victory against the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Week 7 to improve to 6-0 for the first time in 23 years, and hope to continue their mastery of BC by earning their ninth win in the last 10 regular-season meetings with the Lions.

Calgary has been dominant on defence, leading the league in several different categories, including points allowed per game (11.3), forced fumbles (10) and sacks (17) and hopes to move to 34-8 against West Division rivals since the start of the 2014 season. The last-place Lions were left to lick their wounds during their off week following a 29-25 loss to the Ottawa Redblacks on July 20. It doesn't get any easier for BC, which has dropped four straight meetings with Calgary and hasn't tasted victory at McMahon Stadium since a 25-24 win Aug. 1, 2014, but hopes the extra time to prepare for the Stampeders pays off as they look to produce the shock of the CFL season. "We're coming up against the juggernaut of the league and we want to win," Lions defensive back T.J. Lee told reporters. "We have to keep putting in the work if we're expecting results."

TV: 10 p.m. ET, TSN, ESPN Plus

ABOUT THE LIONS (2-3): Veteran running back Brandon Rutley, who rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown against Ottawa, was placed on the six-game injured list after suffering a knee injury. Jeremiah Johnson, who leads the team with 222 rushing yards, is likely to return to the lineup after missing the last game with an ankle injury while Travon Van is back with the team after dealing with a personal issue back home. Offensive lineman Jovan Olafioye suffered a knee injury against the Redblacks and is likely to miss Saturday's clash while Hunter Steward is questionable because of a back injury, which has kept him sidelined for the last month.

ABOUT THE STAMPEDERS (6-0): Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 187 yards and three touchdowns, including a scoring strike to Eric Rogers - his fifth TD catch in his last four games. Don Jackson leads the team in rushing yards (442), but was a late scratch against Saskatchewan due to a pulled hamstring and is questionable for Saturday while his replacement Terry Williams, who returned a punt for a 78-yard touchdown against the Roughriders, could sit out because of a nagging shoulder injury. "There are concerns and as always I'm going to make the best decision for the club," Calgary coach Dave Dickenson told reporters. "If they show me they can practice by day 3 then I'd like to see them play."

        EXTRA POINTS

        1. Calgary has held five of six opponents to 14 points or fewer in 2018.

        2. Lions DE Odell Willis has recorded three sacks in his last two games.

        3. Mitchell has thrown 11 touchdowns passes in his last five starts.

        PREDICTION: Stampeders 31, Lions 19

          RECOMMENDED CHOICES
          The Walker Group Picks

          # 3 PILATUS 4/1

          # 1 ALAMO CITY 5/2

          # 4 NECESSARY PARTY 5/1

PILATUS looks to be a very good contender. He has recorded decent numbers under today's conditions and will most likely fare well against this group. Recently Olesiak has been on fire which may give the edge to this gelding. Don't overlook this gelding in your propositions - very dangerous with Olesiak aboard. ALAMO CITY - Has run well when racing a dirt sprint race. Gonzalez has shown excellent profits (+1 return on investment ) at this distance/surface. NECESSARY PARTY - Had one of the top Equibase Speed Figures of this group of animals in his last race.

Race 10 - Maiden Special Weight - 5.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $10100 Class Rating: 48

FOR REGISTERED NEW MEXICO BRED MAIDENS, FILLIES TWO YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 120 LBS.

                RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                The Walker Group Picks

                # 6 SANTITA S S 7/2

                # 1 TONNI GWEN 6/1

                # 3 SINGING MARY 5/2

I think about SANTITA S S here. Has decent Equibase Class Figures relative to this group - worth a look. TONNI GWEN - Have to examine solely on class, with some of the top class figures of this field. SINGING MARY - Players ought to note that this animal runs with second time Lasix today. Will most likely go to the front end and might never look back.

                    Thistledown - Race #5 - Post: 3:40pm - Maiden Special - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $22,500 Class Rating: 69

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

                    #1 PARISIAN STROLL (ML=7/2)
                    #2 PROTOSTAR (ML=5/2)

PARISIAN STROLL - Such a solid closer. She'll try her best to catch the pace and pass them on the way to the finish line. Strong winning percentage this rider and handler twosome have been putting together. I really like that recent race on Jul 8th at Ellis Park where she finished third. PROTOSTAR - Have to make this filly a serious competitor; she comes off a strong outing on July 23rd. This equine picks up a lot of dough per start. Uppermost in this race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 FOREST GEM (ML=3/1), #7 BRAZILIAN PRINCESS (ML=6/1), #5 MISS LEAH DEE (ML=6/1),

FOREST GEM - I can't play this continual non-winner. Gets the job finished now and then. BRAZILIAN PRINCESS - This thoroughbred just hasn't looked ready lately. MISS LEAH DEE - 6/1 is not pegged at the proper price for any racer in a sprint of 6 furlongs that hasn't finished in the money in a sprint event of late. Really had to give me more than that in the last race. Never made much of an impact. Don't feel this racer will do much running in today's race. That last fig was disappointing when compared with today's Equibase class figure.

                    STRAIGHT WAGERS:
#1 PARISIAN STROLL is the play if we get odds of 3/2 or better

                      #6 STOP THE PARADE (ML=10/1)

UNBOUNDED SPIRIT - Have to make this gelding a win candidate; he comes off a strong effort on Jul 8th. This race horse has a lot of class. A good sign in a turf race like we have today. Have to watch for this animal on the turf. Last race at Woodbine, scored a big turf fig. Have to think he can do it again in this event. Horse has improved at least 2 speed rating points in last 2 races. I look for that to continue in this race. STOP THE PARADE - I really like that most recent outing on Jul 13th at Woodbine where he ran third.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #4 EVERGLOW (ML=3/1), #1 PLEASANT FOREST (ML=4/1), #7 KILKENNY PROSPECT (ML=6/1),

EVERGLOW - This gelding hasn't been showing me anything in the last two outings. PLEASANT FOREST - This gelding finished outside the top 3 on June 3rd and wasn't close to victory last time out either. KILKENNY PROSPECT - This mount will in all probability be at the back of the pack as this field crosses the finish.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - UNBOUNDED SPIRIT - One of the class angles that my good buddy Solo Steve and I play, is to look at the lifetime earnings per start. This thoroughbred is tops in my book.

                      STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Put your money on #9 UNBOUNDED SPIRIT on the nose if you can get odds of 5/2 or more

1* Free Pick on Boston Red Sox -141
The Red Sox have taken the first two games of this huge 4-game series at home against the Yankees and I see them having no problem taking game 3 on Saturday. Boston has now won 5 straight at home against a team with a winning road record, while the Yankees have dropped 3 straight overall and 4 of their last 5 against a team with a winning record.
Red Sox will have a massive edge on the mound in Saturday's contest, as they send out the newly acquired Nathan Eovaldi against the Yankees Chance Adams, who is making his big league debut.
This Boston offense is the best in baseball and it's really asking a lot of a guy like Adams to be able to keep them in check. Not to mention the nerves that will come with making his big league debut at Fenway Park in the biggest rivalry in baseball. Adams also isn't an elite prospect. He's posted just a 3.07 ERA and 1.40 WHIP over his last 6 starts at Triple-A.
Eovaldi looked like a completely different pitcher in his first start with the Red Sox. He allowed just 4 hits and didn't walk a single batter over 7 shutout innings at home against the Twins. He might not completely shutdown this Yankees' offense, but he should get more than enough run support to bring home the victory. Take Boston!

Play on: Diamondbacks -134 at 5Dimes

Jack’s Free Pick Saturday: Arizona Diamondbacks -134
Clay Buchholz continues to lack the respect he deserves from oddsmakers. He is finally healthy for the first time in a long time, and he’s showing what he is capable of for the Arizona Diamondbacks this season as a result.
Buchholz has gone 4-1 with a 2.12 ERA and 1.059 WHIP in nine starts this season. That’s a big enough sample size to know that this guy is back to his old self. Buchholz is also 0-0 with a 2.57 ERA in two career starts against San Francisco.
Andrew Suarez is 4-6 with a 4.11 ERA and 1.272 WHIP in 18 starts this season, including 1-1 with a 5.94 ERA and 1.500 WHIP in his last three. He has been at his worst on the road this year, going 2-3 with a 4.66 ERA and 1.511 WHIP in nine starts away from home.
The Giants are 43-90 in their last 133 road games vs. a team with a winning record. The Diamondbacks are 4-1 in Buchholz’s last five starts. Bet the Diamondbacks Saturday.

The Key: Kevin Gausman gets a breath of fresh air with the Braves. He escapes the rugged AL East and gets to pitch in the much more friendly NL East for a contending team moving forward. Look for Gausman to perform well in his first start with his new teams tonight. The Mets are just 1-6 in their last 7 games overall to fall to 44-63 on the season. Zack Wheeler faced the Braves on June 12th, giving up 6 earned runs and 12 base runners in 5 2/3 innings of a 2-8 loss in his lone start against them this year. The Braves are 5-0 in their last 5 games overall. The Mets are 1-8 in Wheeler’s last 9 home starts vs. a team with a winning record. The Braves are 5-0 in their last 5 meetings in New York. Take Atlanta.

                                CFL | BC vs Calgary
                                Play on: UNDER 50½ -105

Calgary is 6-0 and crushing the competition, winning by 18.5 PPG. With British Columbia scoring just 21.6 PPG, the total has slid from 52 to 50.5. I'm inclined to agree with where the total is headed with Calgary 5-1 UNDER this season and 20-7 UNDER at home after gaining 200 or less passing yards in their last game.
