    Wednesday's Diamond Notes

Hottest team: Cardinals (18-3 last 21)

St. Louis has gone from not being in the playoff picture last month to leading the National League Wild Card race as August wraps up. The Cardinals finished their road trip at Los Angeles and Colorado with an impressive 5-1 record and avoided a letdown in Tuesday’s 5-2 home victory over Pittsburgh. In eight of the last 10 games, the Cardinals have allowed three runs or less, led by right-hander Jack Flaherty, as St. Louis went 5-0 in his five August starts.

The Cards own an 8-2 mark in their past 10 games at Busch Stadium, as Miles Mikolas takes the mound against the Pirates. Mikolas continues to have a resurgence after not pitching in the Majors since 2014 as St. Louis has compiled a 9-1 record in his last 10 starts dating back to Independence Day. The one team Mikolas hasn’t been sharp against is Pittsburgh as the Cardinals are 1-2 in his three starts versus the Bucs, including a 4-0 home loss in June.

Coldest team: Phillies (2-8 last 10)

A playoff berth is slowly slipping away from Philadelphia, who has put together one of the top turnarounds in baseball. The Phillies blew a 3-0 lead in Tuesday’s 5-4 home setback to the Nationals as Washington scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to waste a solid outing by Aaron Nola. Philadelphia sits four games behind Atlanta for the top spot in the National League East and 2 ½ games back of Milwaukee for the second Wild Card position in the National League.

The Phillies try to avoid the sweep tonight as former Cy Young winner Jake Arrieta heads to the hill. Arrieta has lost three consecutive starts and Philadelphia is 0-4 in his past four outings dating back to August 6. The Phillies have split Arrieta’s two starts against Washington this season, while Philadelphia is 4-2 in the right-hander’s last six starts at Citizens Bank Park.

Hottest pitcher: Mike Minor, Rangers (10-6, 4.40 ERA)

Texas remains at the bottom of the AL West, but the lone bright spot on the mound has been Minor. In his four starts since late July, the Rangers are 4-0, including underdog victories over the Astros, Yankees, and Athletics. Minor shut down the potent Oakland offense in his last start by allowing one hit in six scoreless innings of a 4-2 victory at the Coliseum last Wednesday to avoid the sweep to the A’s. The southpaw will be tested again in the ‘dog role tonight against the Dodgers as Texas tries to avoid the season sweep by Los Angeles.

Coldest pitcher: Zack Godley, Diamondbacks (13-7, 4.59 ERA)

Arizona’s pitching has been solid in two games against San Francisco by allowing three runs. However, the D-backs’ offense hasn’t pushed a single run across in a pair of losses, including a disappointing 1-0 walk-off defeat to the Giants on Tuesday. Godley has struggled of late as the Arizona right-hander hasn’t lasted past the fifth inning in his last two outings against the Padres and Mariners, while yielding 15 hits and 11 earned runs. The last time Godley faced the Giants at Chase Field on July 1, he was tagged for seven runs in four innings of a 9-6 setback.

Biggest OVER run: Brewers (5-1 last six)

Milwaukee fell behind Cincinnati, 6-0 after two innings on Tuesday, but the Brewers rallied to get within 7-6 through 6 ½ innings. The OVER of 9 easily cashed, but Milwaukee fell short in a 9-7 defeat, the second time the Brewers have lost to the Reds by that score in a week. The Brewers’ offense scored seven runs for the third time in four games as Milwaukee tries to end a 3-8 skid on the road. Freddy Peralta tossed seven scoreless innings against the Reds at Miller Park last week in a 4-0 victory, while Reds’ starter Matt Harvey has cashed the UNDER in four of his last five starts overall.

Biggest UNDER run: Diamondbacks (6-2 last eight)

Arizona’s offense hasn’t scored a run in the last 18 innings at San Francisco and has come up dry in the past 23 innings overall. The pitching staff has allowed five runs in the previous three games, while Arizona has hit the UNDER in six of the past eight series finales since the end of July. San Francisco is riding a 5-1 UNDER stretch the last six games as rookie Dereck Rodriguez takes the hill tonight. Rodriguez has cashed the UNDER in seven of the past nine starts overall, including two of the last three at AT&T Park.

Matchup to watch: Rays vs. Braves

Tampa Bay had its eight-game winning streak halted in Tuesday’s 9-5 defeat at Atlanta, as the Rays allowed more runs last night than they did in their previous four games combined. The Braves exploded for a pair of four-run inning, while gaining a valuable game on the Phillies for the top spot in the NL East race.

The two squads wrap up their two-game interleague series at SunTrust Park as Atlanta goes for the season sweep of Tampa Bay. Sean Newcomb takes the mound for the Braves as Atlanta has won five of the southpaw’s last six starts since late July. Newcomb has either been great or terrible recently as allowed one earned run or less four times in this stretch, but was knocked around in two other starts by giving up 21 hits and 12 earned runs in home starts against the Brewers and Rockies.

The Rays turn to another reliever to start tonight as Diego Castillo makes his third start in the last 10 days. Granted, Castillo didn’t last past the second inning, but Tampa Bay won both outings against Boston as an underdog. Since dropping the final three games at Baltimore in late July, the Rays are 5-5 in their last 10 contests away from Tropicana Field, which includes three victories over the Red Sox and Yankees.

    Betcha didn’t know:
The Indians won Adam Plutko’s first three starts this season, but Cleveland has dropped four of his past five starts. Cleveland routed Minnesota on Tuesday, 8-1, as the Twins have scored five runs in the previous four games, all losses. Since a four-game road winning streak in late July, the Twins have lost 10 of their past 13 games away from Target Field.

    Biggest public favorite:
    Red Sox (-300) vs. Marlins

    Biggest public underdog:
    Tigers (+103) at Royals

    Biggest line move:
Rays (+145 to +135) at Braves

1* Free Pick on Texas Rangers +149
This is simply too good a price to pass up on the Rangers at home with Mike Minor on the mound. Minor has been one of the Texas' best starters this season and he's coming into this matchup with a strong 2.41 ERA and 0.696 WHIP in his last 3 starts. He's also been at his best this year at home, where he's got a 3.33 ERA and 1.027 WHIP in 12 starts.
Last time out Minor completely shutdown a hot A's team, allowing just 1 hit over 6 shutout innings. It's been a wise move backing Minor off a strong outing like that, as he's 26-10 against the money line in his last 36 starts after allowing 1 or fewer runs in previous start. Minor is also an impressive 23-13 in his last 36 as a dog of +150 or less.
Alex Wood will take the mound for the Dodgers and he's not fared well in this spot. Wood is just 3-7 in his last 10 as a favorite of -150 or more and 9-17 in his last 26 when his team is riding a winning streak of 3 or more games. LA is also 0-4 in his last 4 interleague starts. Take Texas!

This pitching matchup between Jake Arrieta and Gio Gonzalez has the name recognition of a marquee matchup. This season though not so much. Both pitchers have struggled this season and are both on 3 game losing streaks. Gonzalez has not made it out of the sixth inning in 9 of his last 15 starts and with a Whip of 1.52 you can see why. Gonzalez has actually lost 9 of his last 10 decisions since June 1st. Arrieta is clearly the better pitcher of the two despite his recent starts. He should end the streak in this one. Take The Phillies.

                    MLB | Dodgers vs Rangers
Play on: Dodgers -143 at BetPhoenix

My free play is on the LA Dodgers at 8:05 ET. The Dodgers have won four in a row after last night's 8-4 victory in Texas, cutting their deficit in the National League West to just one game. The 71-61 Dodgers play again tonight in Arlington, wrapping up a brief two-game IL series with the Rangers, before returning home to welcome the 72-60 Diamondbacks to Dodger Stadium for a four-game weekend series. Texas has lost three straight contests and five of its last seven, giving them a 58-75 record. The team is on pace to win just 70 or 71 games and currently resides 23 1/2 games behind the Houston Astros in the AL West.
Alex Wood (7-6, 3.60 ERA) takes the mound tonight and will be pitching on three days of extra rest after having his scheduled start on Sunday pushed back so manager Dave Roberts could have his top-four starters face Arizona beginning on Thursday. Wood is just 3-7 in 20 career interleague games (15 starts) but does own a respectable 3.21 ERA in those games. Let's also note that he's allowed three ERs or less in 12 straight outings. Texas lefty Mike Minor (10-6, 4.40 ERA) will oppose Wood. Minor won his fourth straight game last Wednesday, after allowing one hit over six scoreless innings in a 4-2 win over Oakland. His overall season is hardly impressive but he does own a 6-2 record with a 3.23 ERA in his last 12 starts since the beginning of June (Rangers are 7-5 in that span). Minor is 1-2 with a 2.56 ERA in seven career appearances vs the Dodgers (six starts).
Both starting pitchers come in performing well but I'll side with the Dodgers, who can ill-afford a loss to the lowly Rangers, ahead of their four-games series with the D'backs. LA is averaging a healthy 5.25 RPG on the road, which is almost almost a run higher than the team averages at home (4.34 per). Meanwhile, Texas is a poor 29-39 at home, where it allows a whopping 6.04 RPG. Play the Dodgers.

I'll gladly take my chances here with Chicago on the -1.5 run line in Wednesday's clash, which will follow the conclusion of Tuesday's suspended game. The Cubs enter having won 6 straight and could be sitting at 7 in a row by the time this one starts. While the offense was quiet in last night's contest, Chicago has scored 7 or more in 5 of their last 7 and I could see them reaching that mark in this one. That's because the Cubs will be up against Jason Vargas, who has a 6.96 ERA in 15 starts overall and a 8.15 ERA in 9 road starts. Chicago will counter with Alec Mills, who was sensational in his MLB debut last week against the Reds at home. Mills allowed just 1 run on 3 hits with 8 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. I look for him to shine again, as he's facing a Mets offense that has really struggled to score of late. Give me the Cubs -1.5 (+110)!

The St. Louis Cardinals have won 20 of 25 games on the month, including a 5-2 triumph over the Pittsburgh Pirates Tuesday night. Tonight they hand the ball to right-hander Miles Mikolas (13-3, 2.94 ERA) who is 1-1 with a 2.91 ERA in five career appearances against Pittsburgh.
The Pirates turn to Trevor Williams (10-9, 3.44) who is 2-4 with a 6.93 ERA in 10 meetings with the Cards. Pirates are 3-8 in Williams' last 11 starts vs. a team with a winning record.
Cardinals are 9-1 in Mikolas' last 10 starts vs. a team with a losing record.

                            7-Unit Play. Take #910 San Francisco (+110) over Arizona (10 p.m., Wednesday, August 29)
The Giants have put together a nice run of baseball and have themselves thinking postseason. They have cut their deficit in the Wild Card standings to just 1.5 games and are slowly creeping back in to the NL West picture (6 games back). San Fran has pitched brilliantly and now have their top pitcher on the hill in Dereck Rodriguez who hasn't lost since June. He has been unhittable over this 13-game stretch with a 5-0 record and an ERA of 1.82 and even before that he was not giving up any charity on the hill. Rodriguez will look to shutout the D bakcs for the third straight game and he has a great chance to do that. Take the Giants to win this one and sweep the series.
