Reds vs. Brewers Preview and Predictions

    by Gracenote on 09/18/2018

Christian Yelich has terrorized Cincinnati's pitching staff all season and looks to follow up another terrific outing when the Milwaukee Brewers host the Reds on Tuesday for the middle contest of their three-game set. Yelich hit for the cycle for the second time against Cincinnati this season and drove in four runs in the Brewers' series-opening 8-0 victory on Monday.

Yelich is the fifth player in major-league history to hit for the cycle twice in a season and the first to do it against the same team as he continues to bolster his National League MVP resume. Yelich is 24-for-48 with seven homers and 17 RBIs against the Reds this year - including a career-best six-hit performance on Aug. 29, when he hit for his first cycle. The Brewers occupy the top NL wild-card spot and have been keeping the heat on the first-place Chicago Cubs in the NL Central as they trail by 2 1/2 games. Scooter Gennett went 1-for-3 in the series opener, but Yelich's big night allowed him to move into a tie with Cincinnati's second baseman for the NL lead with a .318 batting average.

TV: 7:40 p.m. ET, FS Ohio (Cincinnati), FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds RH Michael Lorenzen (3-1, 3.21 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Chase Anderson (9-7, 3.85)

Lorenzen is making his first start of the season after coming out of the bullpen 42 times and first in the majors since Sept. 16, 2015. The 26-year-old has made 151 consecutive relief appearances since losing to San Francisco, and his career marks show he has been much more effective out of the bullpen (13-6, 3.60 ERA) than in the rotation (4-9, 5.45). Lorenzen has posted a 3.68 ERA in four appearances against Milwaukee this season and is 1-2 with a 5.03 ERA in 20 career contests (three starts).

Anderson has won his last three decisions but has worked five innings or fewer in six of his last seven turns. The 30-year-old is 5-1 with a 2.98 ERA in 10 career starts against the Reds and has won all three of this season's matchups while compiling a 3.63 ERA. Anderson has enjoyed success against Billy Hamilton (3-for-19), Eugenio Suarez (3-for-17) and Gennett (2-for-11).

    WALK-OFFS

    1. The Brewers own a 12-5 advantage in the season series with two contests remaining.

    2. Suarez struck out twice in four hitless at-bats in the opener and is 1-for-17 over his last five games.

    3. Milwaukee 3B Travis Shaw reached base three times (two hits, one walk) on Monday after beginning the month in a 3-for-30 funk.

    PREDICTION: Brewers 11, Reds 3

Rays vs. Rangers Preview and Predictions

      by Gracenote on 09/17/2018

Blake Snell aims to become baseball's first 20-game winner in 2018 when he starts for the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday in the second of three straight at the Texas Rangers. The young ace has won each of his last seven starts while allowing a total of six earned runs to help fuel the Rays' late charge.

Tyler Glasnow and three relievers combined on a two-hitter as Tampa Bay took the opener 3-0. The Rays have won 12 of their last 15 and are within 6 1/2 games of the second wild card in the American League with 13 to play. They've produced 13 shutouts over the past 98 games and own a 2.85 ERA since the start of August. The Rangers, who give the ball to veteran Yovani Gallardo, are in danger of losing a series to Tampa Bay for the fifth time in the last six encounters.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, FS Sun (Tampa Bay), FS Southwest (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays LH Blake Snell (19-5, 2.03 ERA) vs. Rangers RH Yovani Gallardo (8-5, 6.67)

Snell limited the Cleveland Indians to one run on one hit - a solo homer - and struck out nine over seven innings of a 3-1 win Wednesday. It marked the third straight start in which he's fanned nine batters and he is five shy of recording the ninth 200-strikeout campaign in franchise history. The 25-year-old also struck out nine in 6 1/3 dominant innings in a win over Texas on April 16.

Gallardo has gone four straight appearances without producing a quality start, posting a 1-3 record and an ERA of 8.83 in that stretch. He lasted three innings - a season low as a starter - and surrendered six runs in an ugly outing at the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday. Kevin Kiermaier is 6-for-15 with a home run and four walks against the 32-year-old Gallardo.

      WALK-OFFS

      1. Rays DH Ji-Man Choi had a solo homer Monday and owns 14 RBIs in his last 12 games.

      2. Rangers 3B Adrian Beltre remains stuck on 474 career home runs, one shy of Stan Musial and Willie Stargell for 30th on the all-time list.

      3. Tampa Bay RHP Jose Alvarado has 12 straight scoreless innings over a span of 15 appearances.

      PREDICTION: Rays 5, Rangers 2

Mariners vs. Astros Preview and Predictions

        by Gracenote on 09/18/2018

The Seattle Mariners look to win their sixth straight game at Minute Maid Park when they visit the Houston Astros on Tuesday for the middle contest of their three-game series. Seattle bolstered its slim American League wild-card hopes with Monday's 4-1 victory, pulling within seven games of Oakland with 12 contests remaining.

Daniel Vogelbach slugged a pinch-hit grand slam in the eighth inning of the series opener to help the Mariners improve to 4-1 midway through their 10-game road trip. Kyle Seager reached base three times on two hits and a walk on Monday and is 9-for-26 with a homer during his seven-game hitting streak. Houston's loss was just its third in 15 contests as its lead over Oakland in the American League West dipped to four games. Alex Bregman was hitless in four at-bats on Monday and is just 3-for-23 over his last seven contests.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, ROOT Northwest (Seattle), AT&T SportsNet-Southwest (Houston)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mariners RHP Mike Leake (10-9, 3.99 ERA) vs. Astros RH Josh James (0-0, 4.22)

Leake has recorded consecutive victories after going 0-5 over his previous 11 outings. The 30-year-old gave up just one earned run over 13 innings in the wins after being hammered for 11 runs over 10 1/3 frames in his previous two turns. Leake has gone 0-2 with a 5.00 ERA in three starts against the Astros this season to fall to 6-6 with a 3.67 ERA in 15 career appearances (13 starts).

Houston decided to push back Gerrit Cole's start to Friday in order to give him extra rest, according to manager A.J. Hinch. That provides the opportunity for the 25-year-old James to make his second major-league start and fourth overall appearance. James came away without a no-decision against the Los Angeles Angels on Sept. 1, when he allowed three runs and three hits while registering nine strikeouts over five innings, and has since made two relief appearances.

        WALK-OFFS

        1. Astros RF Josh Reddick (ankle) departed the series opener and will be re-evaluated on Tuesday.

        2. Seattle LHP James Paxton (pneumonia) rejoined the team on Monday and will throw a bullpen session before the team leaves Houston.

        3. Houston 2B Jose Altuve went 0-for-2 with two walks after recording two-hit performances in four of his previous six contests.

        PREDICTION: Mariners 5, Astros 3

Cubs vs. Diamondbacks Preview and Predictions

          by Gracenote on 09/18/2018

The Chicago Cubs have been searching for someone to spark their struggling offense and may have found the answer in Kris Bryant, who has been slowed by shoulder inflammation for much of the season. Bryant is swinging with power again for the Cubs, who continue their three-game series against the host Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday.

Bryant and Javier Baez each homered while Kyle Hendricks took a one-hit shutout into the ninth inning in Monday's 5-1 victory as Chicago maintained its 2 1/2-game lead over Milwaukee in the National League Central. The Cubs totaled only 15 runs in their previous seven contests but received a much-needed boost Monday from Bryant, who went 2-for-3 with a walk and is 16-for-50 with five doubles and five RBIs since coming off the disabled list on Sept. 1. Arizona was held to three hits in the series opener and fell to 4-12 this month with 11 games remaining. Paul Goldschmidt is 20-for-58 in 16 contests in September for the Diamondbacks, who are five games behind first-place Colorado in the NL West and also five back in the race for the second wild-card spot.

TV: 9:40 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), FS Arizona

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cubs LH Mike Montgomery (4-5, 3.87 ERA) vs. Diamondbacks RH Matt Andriese (3-5, 4.76)

Montgomery is set to make his career-high 17th start of the season after giving up two runs and three hits over four-plus frames in a no-decision against Washington on Thursday. The 29-year-old Californian began the season in the bullpen before moving into the rotation, where he is 4-4 with a 3.48 ERA in 16 starts. Montgomery owns a 1.69 ERA in three career games (one start) covering 10 2/3 innings versus the Diamondbacks.

Andriese is set to make his first start for Arizona in place of Clay Buchholz, who is out for the rest of the season due to an elbow injury. The 29-year-old made four starts for Tampa Bay before being traded in late July to the Diamondbacks, who have used him exclusively as a reliever. "We feel like he can get out there and execute a game plan," manager Torey Lovullo told reporters. "We're excited to see what he can do."

          WALK-OFFS

          1. Chicago's starting pitchers lead the majors with a 2.53 ERA since Aug. 16.

          2. Arizona is 5-50 when trailing after seven innings.

          3. Cubs OF Kyle Schwarber and INF Tommy La Stella did not make the trip to Arizona due to back injuries.

          PREDICTION: Cubs 7, Diamondbacks 3

Los Angeles Angels vs. Oakland Athletics Preview and Predictions 09-18-2018 in MLB

Angels vs. Athletics Preview and Predictions

            by Gracenote on 09/17/2018

The Oakland Athletics failed to take advantage of another team's struggles over the weekend and remain second in the American League wild card race. The Athletics will try to chip away at the deficit and get back in the win column when they return home to host the Los Angeles Angels in the opener of a three-game series on Tuesday.

Oakland sits 1 1/2 games behind the New York Yankees in the battle for the top wild card along with home-field advantage in the wild card game and could have taken the lead over the weekend with wins on Saturday and Sunday, but instead it dropped a pair at the Tampa Bay Rays while watching their chances at an AL West crown dim. The Athletics, who sit four games behind first-place Houston, won seven of eight before stumbling on Saturday and Sunday and will play their next six games at home against sub-.500 clubs Los Angeles and the Minnesota Twins before finishing up the regular season with six on the road at Seattle and the Angels. Los Angeles is sitting in fourth place in the American League West but is set to have an impact on how the races shake out with nine of their remaining 12 games against Houston and Oakland. The Angels will welcome left-hander Tyler Skaggs back to the rotation on Monday while the Athletics counter with righty Liam Hendriks.

TV: 10:05 p.m. ET, FS West (Los Angeles), NBCS California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Angels LH Tyler Skaggs (8-8, 3.78 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Liam Hendriks (0-1, 5.60)

Skaggs lasted pitched on Aug. 11 against Oakland before going down with a groin injury and was roughed up in his last two starts, allowing a total of 17 runs and 18 hits in 6 2/3 innings. The 27-year-old owns 123 strikeouts in 116 2/3 innings this season and was carrying a 2.62 ERA prior to his last two outings. Skaggs was strong at the Athletics on June 15, when he surrendered two unearned runs and struck out eight in seven innings to earn a win.

Hendriks is getting the call to open a bullpen day, marking the sixth time in seven appearances this month that he filled the starting role. The Australia native did not allow a run in any of his last five appearances, surrendering a total of two hits while striking out four over five innings during that span. Hendriks is making his fifth appearance of the season against the Angels and totaled one run allowed and three hits across 2 2/3 innings over the first four.

            WALK-OFFS

            1. Angels RF Kole Calhoun snapped a 0-for-25 drought with a home run on Sunday.

            2. Oakland 1B Matt Olson is 8-for-17 with six RBIs in the last five games.

            3. Los Angeles DH Shohei Ohtani tweaked his left ankle in the eighth inning on Sunday but is not expected to miss time.

            PREDICTION: Athletics 5, Angels 4

Rockies vs. Dodgers Preview and Predictions

              by Gracenote on 09/18/2018

Two hot left-handed pitchers square off Tuesday, when Clayton Kershaw and the Los Angeles Dodgers host Kyle Freeland and the Colorado Rockies for the middle contest of their three-game series. Kershaw has emerged victorious in five consecutive decisions and seven of his last eight, while Freeland has won six straight decisions and nine of his past 10.

Freeland has won his last four starts and will be looking to pitch his team back into first place in the National League West after the Dodgers moved ahead by one-half game with Monday's 8-2 romp. Joc Pederson went 3-for-4 with two homers and three RBIs while Max Muncy belted a three-run homer as Los Angeles won for the fifth time in six games. Colorado is 1-3 on a nine-game road swing and stands a half-game behind the St. Louis Cardinals for the NL's second wild card. Trevor Story departed in the middle of a fourth-inning at-bat due to an elbow injury that he suffered earlier in the game while making a diving stop and Rockies manager Bud Black said they will re-evaluate the All-Star shortstop on Tuesday.
TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountain (Colorado), SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rockies LH Kyle Freeland (15-7, 2.96 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Clayton Kershaw (8-5, 2.51)

Freeland is 7-1 with a 2.69 ERA in 11 starts since the All-Star break. The 25-year-old has allowed two runs in six of his last eight turns while giving up four or fewer hits four times during that stretch. Freeland is 1-1 with a 2.79 ERA in three starts against the Dodgers this season and 2-3 with a 3.52 ERA in seven career outings.

Kershaw gave up four runs - three earned - and eight hits over six innings while defeating St. Louis in his last turn after allowing two earned runs or fewer in nine straight starts. The 30-year-old has issued just six walks in 67 2/3 frames over his last 10 outings and has walked just 23 in 23 starts. Kershaw is 22-7 with a 3.21 ERA in 39 career starts against the Rockies, including a victory on Sept. 7 in which he permitted two runs and six hits over six innings.

              WALK-OFFS

              1. Pederson has recorded four two-homer performances this season, with two coming against Colorado.

              2. Colorado 3B Nolan Arenado went 2-for-4 in the opener for his fourth multi-hit effort in seven games.

              3. Muncy has belted six homers in 44 at-bats against Colorado this season.

              PREDICTION: Rockies 3, Dodgers 2

Giants vs. Padres Preview and Predictions

                by Gracenote on 09/18/2018

The San Francisco Giants attempt to record their sixth consecutive victory against the San Diego Padres when they visit their National League West rivals on Tuesday for the middle contest of their three-game set. San Francisco posted a 4-2 win in Monday's opener to improve to 9-5 in the season series.

Brandon Crawford and Evan Longoria homered while rookie Chris Shaw collected three hits, including his first two major-league doubles, as the Giants recorded their third triumph in four contests. Shaw has gone 5-for-7 over his last two games after notching one hit in 22 at-bats over his first 11 contests. The Padres managed only five hits on Monday as they fell to 1-3 on their six-game homestand. Austin Hedges belted a solo homer and Hunter Renfroe notched an RBI single as San Diego dropped to 3-4 versus San Francisco at home this year.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, NBCS Bay Area (San Francisco), FS San Diego

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants LH Derek Holland (7-8, 3.46 ERA) vs. Padres LH Joey Lucchesi (8-8, 3.67)

Holland is unbeaten in his last 10 starts but has recorded only two victories in that span. The 31-year-old native of Ohio, who has allowed fewer than three runs in each of his last six outings and more than one just once during that stretch, is coming off a no-decision against Atlanta on Wednesday in which he gave up one run and five hits over six innings. Holland is 1-1 with a 6.20 ERA in four career starts versus San Diego, with the victory coming at home on May 2.

Lucchesi has won two of his last three starts, including a triumph at Seattle on Wednesday in which he permitted three runs and six hits over five innings. Only one of the 25-year-old Californian rookie's last four outings have been at home - a victory over the Mariners on Aug. 29, when he allowed one run in a career-high 6 2/3 frames. Lucchesi won his only career turn versus San Francisco, giving up one run and five hits over six innings on April 15.

                WALK-OFFS

                1. Crawford has gone 10-for-25 in six contests at Petco Park this season.

                2. Hedges has homered in three of his last six games and needs four blasts to match the career high of 18 he set last season.

                3. San Francisco has played in a major league-high 104 contests that have been decided by three runs or fewer, going 50-54 in that span.

                PREDICTION: Giants 5, Padres 3

                          Streaking and Slumping Starting Pitchers

                          Streaking:
Blake Snell, Tampa Bay Rays (19-5, 2.03 ERA, $1174)

Is Blake Snell the best pitcher in baseball right now? Might be.

The Rays have won Snell's last seven starts overall and during that span he owns an ERA of 1.32 and a WHIP of 0.7073. Oddsmakers have caught on to Snell, as well, as the Rays are massive -230 road favorites this evening in Arlington against Yovani Gallardo and the Texas Rangers.

                          Slumping:
Yovani Gallardo, Texas Rangers (8-5, 6.67 ERA, $759)

On the other side of Snell's start tonight is Mr. Gallardo. "Yo" has been a profitable +7.59 units for bettors this season but his pitching numbers tell a much different story. The Rangers won a few shootouts as big underdogs with Gallardo on the hill, which has inflated his betting numbers, but over his last eight starts he is pitching to an ERA of 7.11 and a WHIP of 1.7105.

The Rangers are, of course, big home underdogs today at +180.

                          Windy Oakland

The Angels and A's open a three game series at Rickey Henderson Field at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on Tuesday night and the weather forecast is calling for a stiff 12-14 mile per hour breeze blowing out the center field.

The full game total looks pretty achievable at 8.5 but the Angels are starting Tyler Skaggs, who has allowed 17 earned runs over his last 6.2 innings of work (22.95 ERA), so Over on the A's team total of 4.5 (+105) seems like the smarter play.

                          Ring 'Em Up Eddings

Umpire Doug Eddings will be calling balls and strikes tonight in San Diego for the game between the Giants and the Padres at Petco Park. Eddings is one of the top Under umpires in Major league Baseball this season at 18-9, and the Under is 22-10-1 in his last 33 games in pads dating back to last season.

The main trait of an Under trending umpire is a large strike zone, which leads to more strikes called, which leads to less hits, which leads to less runs scored.

Eddings owns the second highest strike percentage of the 89 home plate umpires who have called games this season at 65.0 percent (Jeremie Rehak is No. 1 at 65.3 percent).

The total may be low, but both Derek Holland and Joey Lucchesi have been pitching well. Look for both pitchers to exploit the wide strike zone and put plenty of zeros up on the scoreboard. Full game Under 7 (-110) is the play tonight.

                          Kluber Dominance

Over the last month and a half of the baseball season, Cleveland Indians' starting pitcher Corey Kluber has been hit-or-miss. He either has an electric start where he dominates his opponents over seven shutout innings, or he blows up for four or five earned runs allowed in five innings of work. One thing that you can rely on with Kluber, however, is that he will dominate the Chicago White Sox.

In two starts against the White Sox this season, Kluber has allowed zero runs and only four hits in 13 innings of work. He has also rung up 17 strikeouts with only one walk in those two victories. Oh, and by the way, the Indians have outscored the Sox 21-1 in those two games.

The lean for this game is the Tribe on the runline -1.5 (-120) and if you're feeling frisky check them out at -2.5 (+135). Also, the White Sox team hits total of Under 7.5 (-120) should be considered.
