    LOUISVILLE PASSING ON PASS

So much for being the next Lamar Jackson. Sophomore quarterback Juwon Pass has been benched by Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino for this weekend's game against Virginia. Pass will watch from the sidelines this weekend after opening the season with a 50 percent completion rate, two touchdown passes and four interceptions in parts of three games with the Cardinals. Pass he has been dealing with a turf toe injury that has limited him in the running game, resulting in him totaling just seven rushing yards on 15 attempts. Cunningham is 16-for-25 for 163 yards and a score to date.

The Cavaliers opened at -3.5, but the Cardinals' QB problems have played a role in that line being bet up to -5. But Virginia is just 2-7 ATS in its last nine as a home favorite, while Louisville is a red-hot 15-2 ATS in its past 17 as a true road 'dog.

      STOREY'S THE ONE

It might not be entirely accurate to suggest that Ty Storey has "won" the Arkansas Razorbacks' starting quarterback job – but he'll be under center for Saturday's marquee showdown at Auburn. Storey was named the No. 1 QB by Razorbacks head coach Chad Morris, ending a duel that saw neither Storey nor Cole Kelley run away with the role. The two combined for six touchdowns and six interceptions over Arkansas' first thee games, with Storey (56.7 percent) posting a slightly better completion rate than Kelley (55.4). Arkansas is averaging 233.7 passing yards per game, good for 70th nationally.

The Razorbacks' QB struggles, combined with the Tigers looking for a rebound at home following last week's stunning loss to LSU, make Auburn a strong pick at -29.5. And with Arkansas' team total presently sitting at around 13 points, it's worth noting that Auburn has held road foes to 13 or fewer points in eight of their past 14 home games.

        BRYCE IS BACK

The Stanford Cardinal will have their sensational running back in the lineup for Saturday's road showdown with Oregon. Bryce Love sat out last week's win over UC Davis with an undisclosed injury but is fit to return against the Pac-12-rival Ducks. Head coach David Shaw said Love took some hard hits in the Cardinal's Week 2 win over USC and was held out of last week's game as a precaution. Stanford couldn't do much of anything on the ground in Love's absence, settling for 137 rushing yards on 33 carries. Love has 40 totes for 165 yards and a touchdown on the season.

The line for this game has quickly swung from Stanford +1.5 in some spots all the way to Stanford -2, with the total at 57. That puts the Cardinal's team total at around 30 points; they've scored 30+ points in eight of the last 15 games Love has played dating back to the start of last season.

          REINFORCEMENTS FOR IOWA

A pair of Iowa Hawkeyes offensive players are set to make their return for this weekend's home encounter with Wisconsin. Running back Ivory Kelly-Martin and wide receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette both missed last week's victory over Northern Iowa but are expected to be back in the lineup Saturday. The returns of Kelly-Martin and Smith-Marsette will provide some much-needed depth for a Hawkeyes team that has averaged 28 points through its first three games but has scored more than 20 points in just one of its previous five games vs. the Badgers.

Iowa is listed at +3 against Wisconsin, a slight bump from a +3.5-opening line; the total sits at 43.5. Iowa is 10-3-1 ATS in its last 14 games as a home underdog and should be buoyed by the returns of Kelly-Martin and Smith-Marsette.

            RED ZONE RED ALERT

Two teams in desperate need of a red-zone makeover will face off at Doak Campbell Stadium this Saturday as Florida State hosts Northern Illinois. The visiting Huskies have been somewhat ineffective inside their opponents' 20-yard line, having made eight trips and recording just four touchdowns – all through the air – and two field goals. But the Seminoles have been even worse in the red zone this season, managing just four TDs and a field goal on their nine trips inside the 20. That 55.6-percent scoring success rate is second-worst among Division I teams, ahead of only Western Kentucky (50 percent).

The Seminoles are 10-point favorites as they look to return to the .500 mark – but bettors should be wary about that total of 45. With both teams struggling mightily in the red zone, the under looks like the more appealing option here.

              HIGDON RETURNS FOR MICHIGAN

The Michigan Wolverines will have their top running back in the lineup for Saturday's showdown with visiting Nebraska. Running backs coach Jay Harbaugh says Karan Higdon will be available this weekend after missing last weekend's win over Southern Methodist with an undisclosed injury. And the Wolverines are also expected to have No. 2 running back Chris Evans in the fold; he's also dealing with an undisclosed ailment. Michigan enters the weekend averaging a robust 5.2 yards per carry, with Higdon and Evans combining for 400 rushing yards and four TDs through three games.

The Wolverines are favored by 17.5 points against the Huskers; they're 6-0 SU and 3-2-1 ATS when Higdon rushes for at least 100 yards, with five of those victories coming by 20 or more points.

                WILL AHNMON BE AVAILABLE?

The Miami Hurricanes are holding their breath about the availability of Ahmmon Richards. The talented wide receiver hasn't yet returned to practice since suffering a knee injury in the Hurricanes' season-opening 33-17 loss to LSU, and he's still considered day-to-day. Richards is, however, listed as a starter on Miami's Week 4 depth chart, a sign that he might be ready to return. Richards has battled injuries since putting up 934 receiving yards and three touchdowns as a freshman in 2016; he had just one catch for nine yards against the Tigers before departing.

Richards' return to full health could mean a boon for a Miami team that hasn't had any problem scoring without him, racking up 126 points in wins over Savannah State and Toledo. Yet, with a team total of ~41 points against visiting Florida International (Miami is -26.5 with an O/U of 56.5), Richards' presence certainly makes the over a much stronger option.

                  ROGERS READY TO GO

The Texas A&M Aggies have a tall task ahead of them in Alabama this weekend, but at least they'll have one of their top wide receivers back. Sophomore wideout Kendrick Rogers sat out last week's victory over Louisiana-Monroe with a foot injury, but head coach Jimbo Fisher says he expects Rogers to be available Saturday. Rogers has already featured prominently against a marquee opponent this season, hauling in seven catches for 120 yards and a pair of scores in the Aggies' heart-wrenching 28-26 loss to the Clemson Tigers back on Sept. 8.

Rogers' return could give the Aggies the boost they need to challenge their team total, which comes in at around 17.5 points as of Thursday. But bettors beware: Texas A&M, presently a 26-point underdog with a total of 61, has been outscored 92-14 in its previous two visits to Tuscaloosa.

                    Preview: Wisconsin at Iowa

No. 16 Wisconsin looks to bounce back from its first regular-season loss in almost two years when it opens Big Ten play on the road Saturday against Iowa in the Battle for the Heartland Trophy. The Badgers tumbled out of the Top 10 following a 24-21 loss to BYU last week, which ended their non-conference home winning streak at 41 games, and they hope to recover from the disappointment by beating the Hawkeyes for the sixth time in seven meetings.

"The guys are hurting right now and we got to take that hurt and all own our part in it," Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst told reporters. "We've got a chance to start with a rivalry game in the Big Ten season so we've got to learn from this and move forward. Iowa is riding high after starting off the campaign with three straight wins, including a 38-14 victory against Northern Iowa last week. The Hawkeyes, who haven't started 4-0 since 2015, are ranked second nationally in total defense, giving up 209 yards per game, and hope to put the defensive clamps on Wisconsin's potent rushing attack while treating their home fans to their first win in the series at Kinnick Stadium since a 38-16 triumph on Sept. 18, 2008. "There is a difference when you get into conference play, and anybody that's in the conference understands and appreciates that," Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz told reporters. "We're playing one of the premier teams in the league and it will be a great challenge for us."

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, FOX. LINE: Wisconsin -3.5.

ABOUT WISCONSIN (2-1): Alex Hornibrook threw for 190 yards against BYU to move past Jim Sorgi for 8th place on the Badgers' all-time passing yards list with 4,501 while Jonathan Taylor racked up 117 rushing yards against the Cougars to go over the century mark for the third consecutive time this season. Rafael Gaglianone's streak of consecutive field goals came to an end at 13 in a row -- one short of the program record held by Vitaly Pisetsky in 1999 -- when he missed a potential game-tying kick with 41 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel (leg) and tight end Zander Neuville (leg) are likely out for Saturday's clash while linebacker Mike Maskalunas (lower body) and safety Reggie Pearson (leg) have been upgraded to questionable.

ABOUT IOWA (3-0): Nate Stanley completed 23-of-28 passes for 309 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the win against Northern Iowa en route to becoming the 13th quarterback in program history to reach 3,000 yards for his career. Nick Easley caught a career-high 10 passes for 103 yards and a touchdown while running back Mehki Sargent accounted for a personal-best 120 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns against the Panthers. Ivory Kelly-Martin, who rushed for 62 yards and a touchdown in the season-opening win against Northern Illinois, could return after missing the last two games with an ankle injury while tight end Noah Fant is expected to play after sitting out a few possessions in the first half against Northern Iowa with sore ribs.

                    EXTRA POINTS

                    1. Iowa has won five of its last six Big Ten openers.

                    2. Taylor has rushed for over 100 yards 13 times in 17 career games.

                    3. Stanley owns an 8-2 career record at home.

                    PREDICTION: Iowa 21, Wisconsin 20

                      Preview: Arizona State at Washington

Arizona State recorded a memorable upset of Washington last season and the No. 12 Huskies will be looking to exact some payback when they host the Sun Devils on Saturday in Pac-12 play. Washington was 6-0 and a 17-point road favorite when it was handed a crushing 13-7 setback last October that all but doused its College Football Playoff hopes.

The Huskies opened Pac-12 play with a win over Utah last Saturday and last season's mistake-filled loss to Arizona State is still on their minds. "It doesn't matter on the opponent. You know how these games can go," Washington coach Chris Petersen said at a press conference. "They can turn out much differently if you don't get a couple breaks here and there. But that's what I think about playing in our conference. I say it week in and week out. I know for a fact, anybody can beat anybody." The Sun Devils are looking to bounce back from a loss to San Diego State as they play their first Pac-12 game under first-year coach Herm Edwards. "They've been in the Top 10. It's not by accident, they're a good football team," Edwards said of the Huskies. "Their defense, it's outstanding, one of the better defenses in college football in my opinion."

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Washington -17

ABOUT ARIZONA STATE (2-1, 0-0 Pac-12): Senior quarterback Manny Wilkins has recorded back-to-back 300-yard passing outings and has thrown for 958 yards and seven touchdowns against two interceptions. Standout junior wideout N'Keal Harry has 21 catches for 315 yards and four touchdowns and ranks fifth in school history with 161 receptions. Senior safety Jalen Harvey had a career-best 13 tackles against San Diego State and leads a unit allowing 16 points per game with 25 stops while junior defensive end Darius Slade (team-high 2.5 sacks) is hoping to return from a hand injury that caused him to miss the loss to the Aztecs.

ABOUT WASHINGTON (2-1, 1-0): Senior quarterback Jake Browning was held to 139 passing yards in last year's loss to the Sun Devils and he's thrown the same number of touchdowns and interceptions (four) this season while passing for 764 yards. Senior running back Myles Gaskin has rushed for 271 yards and two touchdowns and is coming off his best effort of the season after rushing for 143 yards and a score on 30 carries against the Utes. The Huskies allow just 10.3 points per game with senior linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven (team-best 33 tackles) and junior safety Taylor Rapp (team highs of three sacks and three fumble recoveries) leading the charge.

                      EXTRA POINTS

                      1. Arizona State has won 11 of the past 12 meetings and holds a 19-16 lead in the series.

                      2. Huskies junior WR Aaron Fuller (19 receptions, 317 yards) has two 100-yard receiving outings and caught at least six passes in each game.

                      3. The Sun Devils allowed 311 rushing yards in the loss to San Diego State.

PREDICTION: Washington 26, Arizona State 17

                        Preview: Stanford at Oregon

After cruising through the non-conference portion of its schedule, No. 19 Oregon takes a step up in competition Saturday when the Ducks host Heisman Trophy candidate Bryce Love and seventh-ranked Stanford. Love missed last week’s win over UC Davis with an undisclosed injury but is expected to start against Oregon, which ranks fifth nationally in rushing defense at 1.96 yards per carry.

The Ducks were rarely challenged in wins over Bowling Green (58-24), Portland State (62-14) and San Jose State (35-22) but will need to play a complete game to avenge last season’s 49-7 loss at Stanford. Love rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns in that win over the Ducks but has yet to find his rhythm this season as opponents look to contain the dynamic senior. Saturday’s contest features another Heisman Trophy candidate in Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert, who is tied for second nationally with 12 passing TDs. The Ducks are eighth in the country in scoring at 51.7 points per game but will be tested by a Stanford defense that has given up a total of 23 points in wins over San Diego State (31-10), USC (17-3) and UC Davis (30-10).

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ABC. LINE: Stanford -2

ABOUT STANFORD (3-0, 1-0 Pac-12): Quarterback K.J. Costello threw a pair of scoring passes in last week’s win over UC Davis to JJ Arcega-Whiteside, who is off to a strong start with 13 receptions while averaging 24.9 yards per catch. Coach David Shaw is looking for more consistency from his squad but has been pleased by the play of linebackers Bobby Okereke and Joey Alfieri, a Portland native who has 18 tackles through three games. “We're still growing,” Shaw told reporters. “We still have flashes of being really good and some flashes of not being really good, but I think in spots we’re getting better."

ABOUT OREGON (3-0, 0-0): Linebacker Justin Hollins had two tackles for loss, a sack, an interception, a forced fumble and a pass breakup in last week’s win over San Jose State as the Ducks held the Spartans to 29 yards net rushing and fewer than 300 yards of offense. Hollins and fellow linebacker Jalen Jelks have combined for 9.5 tackles for loss with 5.5 sacks, while nose guard Jordon Scott has drawn praise from coach Mario Cristobal for his leadership. Tony Brooks-James was held to 39 rushing yards in last week’s win but could receive a heavy workload if Stanford focuses on stopping the Ducks’ passing game.

                        EXTRA POINTS

                        1. Stanford holds a 48-32-1 lead in the series – including 16-13 in Eugene.

                        2. Oregon is averaging 42.9 points per game over 18 contests since 2016 with Herbert in the starting lineup.

                        3. Oregon backup QB Braxton Burmeister will miss his second straight game due to a left knee injury.

                        PREDICTION: Stanford 27, Oregon 23

Preview: East Carolina at South Florida

South Florida hopes to avoid needing another fourth-quarter comeback and remain unbeaten when it hosts well-rested East Carolina in the American Athletic Conference opener for both teams Saturday. USF has scored 39 unanswered points in the final quarter of the last two contests, rallying from 10 down to beat Georgia Tech at home before scoring 18 points in the final 15 minutes to beat Illinois 25-19 in Chicago last week.

“We can’t keep putting (ourselves) in this situation,” Bulls quarterback Blake Barnett told the Tampa Bay Times after throwing two touchdown passes in the final 14:53 last Saturday. “Obviously everyone’s ecstatic and over the top, it was a very dramatic and emotional game. But we have to come out stronger at the start of the game so we don’t put ourselves in a hole.” USF coach Charlie Strong told reporters he likes the resiliency of his players and East Carolina will have to show the same type of fight after a difficult few weeks following a stunning 41-19 win over North Carolina. The Pirates, who had last weekend’s game at Virginia Tech postponed as Hurricane Florence crashed into the East Coast, moved their camp to Orlando, Fla. to prepare for the matchup against the Bulls. “We’re playing with a lot of confidence, we’re practicing with a lot of confidence,” East Carolina coach Scottie Montgomery told reporters. “We’re really excited to be able to play again. … When the lights come on, our guys will be ready to play.”

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPNews. LINE: South Florida -22

ABOUT EAST CAROLINA (1-1): The Pirates rebounded from a season-opening loss to North Carolina A&T by registering 510 yards of offense against the Tar Heels, including 290 through the air from sophomore quarterback Reid Herring. Senior Trevon Brown had 90 of his team-leading 147 receiving yards versus North Carolina and is among four Pirates with at least 10 receptions in the early going while Herring has completed 57.7 percent of his passes for 599 yards. Senior Anthony Scott leads the team with 107 yards rushing to go along with a TD and senior defensive end Nate Harvey has 5.5 tackles for loss (1.5 sacks) in the first two games.

ABOUT SOUTH FLORIDA (3-0): Barnett is averaging 306 yards passing while accounting for 10 touchdowns (seven passing) and boasts a stable of four players with at least 182 receiving yards in the three wins. Freshman Randall St. Felix leads that group with 286 yards and senior Tyre McCants has a team-best 19 receptions for another 207 - needing 94 yards to move from seventh to fourth on the school’s all-time list. Junior Jordan Cronkrite leads the ground attack with 175 yards and freshman Duran Bell Jr. (69) is questionable again due to an ankle injury while senior linebacker Khalid McGee is on a torrid pace with a team-best 34 tackles.

                          1. The Bulls can become the fastest FBS team in Florida to reach 150 victories in program history Saturday.

                          2. South Florida has won seven of the eight previous matchups with the Pirates, including a 61-31 triumph at East Carolina in 2017.

                          3. The Pirates have lost their last four road openers after falling 56-20 at West Virginia last season.

PREDICTION: USF 42, East Carolina 21

                            Preview: Texas Southern at Houston

Houston's preparation for Saturday's home game against cross-town foe Texas Southern may be a turning point for the Cougars. This week's game is followed by an off week before American Athletic Conference play starts and the Cougars want to sure up their defense before then.

"This is when you see teams turn and be great or see teams fall apart," junior defensive tackle Ed Oliver told the Houston Chronicle after a 63-49 setback at Texas Tech. The lopsided loss left the Cougars' pass defense (426 yards) and total defense (558 yards) ranked near the bottom nationally. Houston's offense continues to rack up big numbers, recording three straight games of at least 45 points and at least 500 total yards. The Tigers, who have used two quarterbacks, come in off back-to-back losses by a combined 28 points.

Defensive back Sean Jones and linebacker Patrick Howell (24 tackles each) lead a Tigers defense that has allowed 433 yards per game.

ABOUT HOUSTON (2-1): Junior quarterback D'Eriq King (997 passing yards, 111 rushing yards) has 12 passing touchdowns along with four rushing scores and leads the nation in points responsible for. The Cougars had 18 missed tackles against Texas Tech - allowing the Red Raiders to tally 704 total yards of offense - while recording one sack and forcing one turnover. The Cougars will be without senior safety Garrett Davis (broken foot) and senior running back Terence Williams (knee) this weekend.

                            EXTRA POINTS

                            1. Houston and Missouri are the only teams with three straight games of at least 550 total yards of offense.

                            2. The Cougars rank third nationally with six plays of 50-plus yards, including five by sophomore WR Marquez Stevenson (team-high 16 catches for 324 yards, four TDs).

                            3. Saturday's game is part of the agreement that allowed the Houston basketball teams to use Texas Southern's H&PE Arena last season while the Cougars' new Fertitta Center - set to open in December - was under construction.

PREDICTION: Houston 48, Texas Southern 13

                              Preview: Michigan State at Indiana

Michigan State looks to bounce back from its first loss of the season when it travels to face unbeaten Indiana on Saturday night in the Big Ten opener for both squads. The No. 23 Spartans have had a week off since falling at Arizona State 16-13, while the Hoosiers are coming off a home rout of Ball State 38-10.

The Michigan State offense sputtered against the Sun Devils despite 314 yards passing from junior quarterback Brian Lewerke, the fourth-highest output of his career. The Spartans led 13-3 in the third quarter but surrendered 13 points in the fourth on three scoring drives of 65 yards or more, as Arizona State quarterback Manny Wilkins finished with 380 yards through the air. The Hoosiers’ offense has been more running than passing, with freshman running back Stevie Scott leading the way with 388 yards and three touchdowns. But against a Spartans' defense that ranks first in the FBS in rushing defense, allowing 34.5 yards per game, the pressure will be on sophomore quarterback Peyton Ramsey (479 yards, five touchdowns) to move the ball through the air.

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (1-1): The Michigan State running game was nearly non-existent against Arizona State, with the Spartans finishing with 63 yards on 27 carries and lead back LJ Scott rushing seven times for 19 yards. Scott didn't play much in the second half of the game with a leg injury, and his status for the Indiana contest is up in the air, though he was listed on the team's starter at running back on the depth chart. Sophomore Connor Heyward was the team's leading rusher against Arizona State with 22 yards to go with four receptions for 43 yards, and the son of former NFLer Craig "Ironhead" Heyward likely see more time against Indiana whether Scott is healthy or not.

ABOUT INDIANA (3-0): Indiana running backs coach Mike Hart knows a little bit about Michigan State, having called them the "little brother" to Hart's Michigan team during his playing days, a comment that drew the ire of Spartans coach Mark Dantonio. Now, Hart is hoping his young running backs -- freshman Ronnie Walker and Scott -- can help the Hoosiers have some success against Michigan State's vaunted run defense. Indiana has averaged 5.3 yards per carry and 235 yards per game during its 3-0 start and will need to continue to attack on the ground to try to break through against the Spartans and set up possible play-action passes.

                              EXTRA POINTS

                              1. Michigan State WR Cody White tied his career high with nine catches against Arizona State and also recorded his second career 100-yard receiving game with 113 yards.

                              2. Indiana has had 24 freshmen, including 12 redshirt, see the field in its first three games.

                              3. Dantonio is 8-1 against Indiana, including 3-1 at the Hoosiers' Memorial Stadium.

                                Preview: South Alabama at Memphis

Memphis looks to stay unbeaten at home this season when it welcomes South Alabama for a non-conference contest Saturday night. The Tigers have averaged 62.5 points in two wins at home this year compared to tallying 21 points in a road loss, while the Jaguars are hoping to build momentum off last week’s 41-31 win over Texas State for their first victory of the season.

Memphis’ explosive offense is run by junior quarterback Brady White, who has already thrown for 772 yards and 10 touchdowns against one interception in his first season with the Tigers after being a graduate transfer from Arizona State. But the Tigers aren’t just explosive through the air as junior running back Darrell Henderson has rushed for 521 yards and six scores through three games, putting him on pace for a 2,000-yard season. The Tigers rank fourth in the country in rushing yards per game (322.3) and total yards per game (603), making it difficult for teams to focus on just one aspect of the offense. The Jaguars have had trouble stopping anyone this season, allowing 38.7 points and 476.3 yards per game.

                                TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN3. LINE: Memphis -31

ABOUT SOUTH ALABAMA (1-2): The Jaguars may have found themselves a permanent quarterback after senior Evan Orth led a come-from-behind win over Texas State, one day after opening-game starter Cole Garvin was suspended from the team following a public intoxication arrest. Orth finished with 266 yards and two touchdowns -- both in the final 2:02 -- as the Jaguars scored the final 25 points. Garvin started the opener before Orth started and played a majority of time in the team’s second contest, then Orth exceeded his season totals in yards and touchdowns against Texas State.

ABOUT MEMPHIS (2-1): While the Tigers’ offense has been making the headlines, the defense has also played strong in the season’s first three contests, allowing 19.3 points per game and ranking ninth in the country in total defense at 267.3 yards. The pass defense has been the team’s strength, as Memphis has given up only 101.7 yards per game, good for second in the nation. Linebacker Bryce Huff leads the team with three sacks while four others have recorded a sack, and the Tigers have also notched three interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown by sophomore defensive back TJ Carter.

                                EXTRA POINTS

                                1. South Alabama WR Jamarius Way had 11 catches for 173 yards against Texas State, both totals being the most by any Sun Belt Conference player this season.

                                2. Memphis will be without junior TE Sean Dykes (three catches, 34 yards, one TD), who will sit out for a violation of team rules.

                                3. The Tigers have won 10 straight regular-season games at home and are 14-2 at home in three seasons under coach Mike Norvell.

PREDICTION: Memphis 55, South Alabama 20
