SATURDAY2* #339 Tulane +7.5 over Cincinnati 11:00 AM CTTulane stunned Memphis on Friday night with a blowout win to open the AAC season. It was 40-14 before Memphis added the final 10 points with the 14-point home underdog posting a 496-277 yardage edge and there were no turnovers. Last season Cincinnati won 17-16 in New Orleans with a rushing edge over the option attack from the Wave. Cincinnati is quietly 5-0 but the wins have all come against suspect competition, beating two MAC teams plus struggling UCLA and Connecticut squads. Tulane gets an extra day ahead of this game and there was nothing fluky about the win on Friday, Tulane was simply the more productive squad. The Wave are 2-3 but they had to play Ohio State in Columbus and the losses to Wake Forest and UAB came in tight games with single score results. Darius Bradwell and Corey Dauphine are both on pace for 1,000 yard seasons with Dauphine emerging of late and posting 10.2 yards per carry this season. Jonathan Banks has some mobility at quarterback and has just one interception in 112 attempts this season. Tulane has allowed only 4.0 yards per rush this season for a promising run defense with even Ohio State held to just 151 yards on the ground and last week the nation’s leading rusher Darrell Henderson was held to only 51 yards. Cincinnati ran for 409 yards against FCS Alabama A&M to inflate the season numbers but the Bearcast were out-gained on the ground in their last home game, a narrow 34-30 escape against the MAC’s Ohio. Cincinnati is 1-6 ATS the past two seasons as a home favorite while Tulane is 6-1 ATS the past seven games as an underdog of 14 or fewer points. Freshman quarterback Desmond Ridder has impressed but he is 29-36 vs. Alabama A&M and Connecticut where five of his eight touchdowns came, while going 38-64 against the three more competitive squads on the schedule. Through a light schedule Cincinnati has impressive pass defense numbers but that strength won’t matter much facing an option team. 2* #398 Texas +7.5 over Oklahoma 11:00 AM CTTexas has covered in five straight meetings of the Red River Rivalry, losing by five each of the past two seasons. After the OT scare vs. Army the Sooners appeared to dominate back in Big XII action last week. Texas had its big early lead threatened but held on vs. Kansas State. Only three Big XII teams remain unbeaten in league play and one will be bounced this week. Oklahoma has certainly looked vulnerable on defense but Kyler Murray is the playmaking quarterback the Longhorns haven’t had in recent years with a very limited passing game behind Sam Ehlinger, though Texas is well suited to slow the pace of this game to keep it close. Oklahoma looks suspect as a top 10 national playoff contender as the schedule so far hasn’t impressed with the wins over FAU and UCLA certainly downgraded at this point. Ultimately the points are appealing with Texas and a potential edge on the ground with opponents very productive vs. the Sooners of late. Baylor put up nearly 500 yards against Oklahoma last week in Norman after Iowa State and Army were also very productive against the Sooners. Texas has faced a demanding schedule facing five potential bowl teams and facing several excellent run defenses. Texas has allowed fewer than 20 points per game despite the tough schedule and Ehlinger has improved across the board this season statistically and hasn’t had an interception since the opening week. Oklahoma has played only one game away from home this season and has allowed at least 21 points in each of the last four games. Texas has gotten better as as the season has gone on and as games have gone on, allowing only 17 points combined in the second half of the past three games after allowing late scoring against Tulsa in Week 2. Texas has held opponents to just 6.3 yards per pass attempt and a 55 percent completion rate while allowing only four passing touchdowns in five games as Murray is likely to have his worst game this season. Texas meanwhile will face a Sooners defense that ranks 92nd nationally in yards per pass attempt allowed as the opportunity for the upset is there for the Longhorns.
1* #407 Florida State +14 over Miami, FL 2:30 PM CTAfter the opening week loss to LSU Miami has picked up four straight wins though last week’s ACC opener featured some good fortune. North Carolina had six turnovers, three of which Miami brought back for a defensive touchdown in a misleading 47-10 final score. The big plays on defense allowed N’Kosi Perry to coast with only eight completions in his first start after unseating long time starter Malik Rosier. After a rough start to the season Florida State has been climbing upward. Last season’s 24-20 win for Miami was the first win for the Hurricanes in this series since 2009 and Florida State has won six in a row on the road in this matchup. The Seminoles are back in the ACC picture with a road win over Louisville last week, even if they caught some good fortune in that game. The Seminoles needed a big comeback down 10 in the fourth quarter but Deondre Francois hit two big plays late to give Florida State some positive momentum after some challenges in the first month in a transition season for Willie Taggert. Florida State has gained just 2.8 yards per rush however and they now face one of the nation’s top run defenses but as a two-touchdown underdog a low scoring contest is appealing. The Hurricanes don’t look as good as last season’s team and Francois certainly has been in far more big games than Perry. Miami’s offense has scored just 57 points over nearly eight quarters behind Perry and the magnitude of this rivalry will put more pressure on a Miami offense that has struggled outside of the 77-0 win vs. FCS Savannah State that has greatly boosted the overall numbers. Florida State has allowed just 2.8 yards per rush as Miami will need to make plays in the air in this game and the Seminoles have won despite facing very good run defenses the past two weeks. Since the disastrous opening game against Virginia Tech, Francois has only two interceptions and nine touchdown passes while completing 63 percent of his passes. Syracuse nearly beat Clemson last week as the loss at the Carrier Dome might not look so bad by season’s end while Miami’s schedule has been extremely weak since getting blown out against LSU in the opening weekend. Florida State has been this significant of an underdog once since 2009 and this year’s Miami team doesn't look worthy of this type of valuation with Miami 4-6 the past two years as a double-digit favorite including 1-4 ATS in ACC games with last week’s cover vs. UNC with three defensive touchdowns the only exception.
