Canucks vs. Hurricanes Preview and Predictions

    by Gracenote on 10/08/2018

Carolina Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour has liked what he's seen from his team - and for good reason, considering the club is off to its best start since venturing south from Hartford. Fresh off an eight-goal explosion, the Hurricanes bid to continue their good fortune on Tuesday when they face the visiting Vancouver Canucks.

"We knew we were going to push the pace and try to create offense, not at the expense of playing defense. We haven't mastered that yet," Brind'Amour said of his team on the heels of Sunday's 8-5 victory over the New York Rangers. Sebastian Aho has recorded at least a point in all three games and also tallied in Carolina's 4-1 win versus Vancouver on Feb. 9. While the Hurricanes lit up the scoreboard in their last outing, the Canucks were busy watching their opponent do the same in a 7-4 setback against former Hurricanes coach Bill Peters and Calgary on Saturday. "We have to play better defense - be more strict," said Vancouver's highly touted rookie center Elias Pettersson, who has scored three goals and set up two others already this season.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Sportsnet Vancouver, FS Carolinas

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (1-1-0): While Brandon Sutter got out of the blocks with an assist in Wednesday's 5-2 win over the Flames and a goal on Saturday, the former Hurricane knows his current team is capable of much more. "We've got some pretty skilled players on our team," the 29-year-old Sutter told reporters. "We have to keep getting better. We have a young team. We can be better." Nikolay Goldobin has scored a goal and set up two others to join Loui Eriksson (three assists) with three points this season, and the former recorded his first goal of 2017-18 in a 3-0 win over Carolina on Dec. 5.

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (2-0-1): Carolina's new postgame celebration has been the talk of the NHL as the players raised their arms in the air and performed a slow clap before captain Justin Williams skated down the ice and waved for his teammates to join him. "We want to have fun when we win. The game should be fun. We want the players to enjoy winning and the fans to enjoy being here. Our owner (Tom Dundon) has been pushing that all the way. Why wouldn't you try something different?" Brind'Amour told reporters. Micheal Ferland can help the team perform another postgame celebration if he continues his strong surge, as he has scored and set up a goal in back-to-back contests.

    OVERTIME

    1. Vancouver has surrendered three power-play goals in two games this season after finishing 21st on the penalty kill at 78.3 percent in 2017-18.

    2. Hurricanes G Petr Mrazek has turned aside 55 of 59 shots to win both career encounters versus the Canucks.

    3. Vancouver G Jacob Markstrom made 30 saves in the 3-0 win over Carolina on Dec. 5.

    PREDICTION: Hurricanes 4, Canucks 2

San Jose Sharks vs. Philadelphia Flyers Preview and Predictions 10-09-2018 in NHL

NHL Previews 8th October 2018 by Gracenote
Sharks vs. Flyers Preview and Predictions

      by Gracenote on 10/08/2018

The Philadelphia Flyers were dealt a serious blow on Monday, and they didn't even play a game. The Flyers will take the first step toward overcoming the injury of offseason acquisition James van Riemsdyk on Tuesday when they play their home opener against the San Jose Sharks at Wells Fargo Center.

Van Riemsdyk, who was biggest free-agent signing of general manager Ron Hextall's tenure, will miss five to six weeks with a lower-body injury sustained in Saturday's 5-2 setback to Colorado. "It's a big loss, but it's going to be other guys who are going to step up and fill some roles," center Sean Couturier told Philly.com. San Jose was unable to find its offense while continuing its pronounced power-play woes on Monday as it opened its five-game road trip with a 4-0 setback to the New York Islanders. "It was a game that was winnable. It's frustrating we don't stick any in the net with some of the looks we had, some of the power plays, the kind of momentum we felt like we had," Sharks captain Joe Pavelski told reporters.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network

ABOUT THE SHARKS (1-2-0): San Jose failed to convert on four chances with the extra man versus New York to fall to 0-for-10 on the power play this season. The Sharks hope to make a dent versus the Flyers, against whom they scored twice with the man advantage in a 5-3 setback on Oct. 4, 2017 and added one power-play tally in a 3-1 win on Nov. 28. Martin Jones, who had 26 saves on Monday, has turned aside 77 of 83 shots to win two of three career encounters with the Flyers.

ABOUT THE FLYERS (1-1-0): Jordan Weal skated in van Riemsdyk's spot on left wing in Monday's practice with center Mikhail Vorobyev and Wayne Simmonds. The 26-year-old Weal has yet to play this season and recorded 21 points (eight goals, 13 assists) in 69 contests in 2017-18. "(I'll) do what I do best - that's creating plays, creating offense, and being strong all over the ice defensively," Weal told reporters. "... (If I) go out and do that, the team will have success and I'll have success."

      OVERTIME

      1. Simmonds enjoyed success versus San Jose last season, highlighted by his opening-night hat trick.

      2. Sharks coach Peter DeBoer told reporters on Monday that F Joe Thornton does not have any structural damage in his right knee.

      3. "Gritty," who is a 7-foot tall orange mascot of the Flyers, will make his regular-season debut at Wells Fargo Center on Tuesday.

      PREDICTION: Sharks 3, Flyers 2

Colorado Avalanche vs. Columbus Blue Jackets Preview and Predictions 10-09-2018 in NHL

NHL Previews 8th October 2018 by Gracenote
        by Gracenote on 10/08/2018

Philipp Grubauer came to Colorado hoping for a promotion of sorts and will get his first chance to impress his coaches and teammates when the undefeated Avalanche visit the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday. Grubauer, who served as Braden Holtby's backup for most of his six seasons in Washington, has watched incumbent No. 1 Semyon Varlamov allow three goals and stop 55 of 58 shots in Colorado's season-opening victories over Minnesota and Philadelphia.

"That's the next step for me, taking over as the No. 1," Grubauer told the Denver Post during the preseason. "It's up to the coach, but I want to play every one.'' Grubauer surprisingly started the Capitals first two playoff games last season and lost both, prompting coach Barry Trotz to reinsert Holtby for the rest of Washington's run to the Stanley Cup. Columbus split its first two games, winning in overtime at Detroit on Thursday and losing its home opener to Carolina on Friday after allowing 16 odd-man rushes by the Hurricanes, prompting coach John Tortorella to tell reporters his team was "too cute. It's a worry of mine with this club. Sure, you can be a skilled team, but you're going to have to grind a number of minutes in the National Hockey League."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Altitude (Colorado), FS Ohio (Columbus)

ABOUT THE AVALANCHE (2-0-0): Nathan MacKinnon, a Hart Trophy finalist after recording career highs of 39 goals and 58 assists last season, has scored one goal in each game while linemate Mikko Rantanen, whose 29 goals and 55 assists were career bests last season, has a goal and two assists. J.T. Compher has a goal in consecutive contests after scoring 13 of his 18 career goals last season. Defenseman Erik Johnson matched a career high with three points versus Philadelphia on Saturday - his first such game since the 2013-14 season.

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (1-1-0): Brandon Dubinsky (goal, assist, 68.8 percent on faceoffs) strained an oblique muscle in Sunday's practice and is expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks, derailing the veteran center's solid start. Artemi Panarin, who scored 88 goals in his first three NHL seasons, has a goal and assist as he begins the final year of his contract. Sergei Bobrovsky (78-39-11, .926 save percentage the last two years combined) is expected to play Tuesday after stopping 32 of 35 shots in his season debut Friday.

        OVERTIME

        1. Colorado is 6-for-6 on the penalty kill and 2-for-7 on the power play.

        2. Columbus' roster to start the season was the youngest in the NHL, averaging 25 years, 90 days.

        3. The teams split their two-game season series in each of the last two years with the home team winning in 2017-18 and the visiting side prevailing in 2016-17.

PREDICTION: Blue Jackets 3, Avalanche 2

Los Angeles Kings vs. Winnipeg Jets Preview and Predictions 10-09-2018 in NHL

Kings vs. Jets Preview and Predictions

          by Gracenote on 10/08/2018

Alex Iafallo showed glimpses of making a positive offensive impact for the Los Angeles Kings in 75 games as a rookie last season, and the center powered them to their first victory this year entering Tuesday's road contest at the Winnipeg Jets. Iafallo scored twice in Sunday's 4-2 triumph over Detroit, and through two games the 24-year-old center has three points -- a good start after he recorded nine goals and 25 points last season.

"We felt all along he did a lot of good things last year, (but) didn't capitalize on some of his opportunities," Kings coach John Stevens told reporters about Iafallo. "He's looked like he has taken his game to another level in all areas." The Kings needed the boost after placing goaltender Jonathan Quick on injured reserve after he suffered a lower-body injury in practice Saturday, and now face a Jets team with plenty of offensive firepower but one that struggled throughout Saturday's 5-1 loss at Dallas. Winnipeg gave up three power-play goals and allowed Dallas' top line to account for all five goals and five assists, two days after blasting St. Louis 5-1 in the season opener. "We didn't give ourselves a chance to get going," Jets coach Paul Maurice told the media, lamenting his team having to chase the game after surrendering two first-period goals. "We were in the penalty box too much early, and not very effective on the kill at all."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS West (Los Angeles), TSN3 (Winnipeg)

ABOUT THE KINGS (1-0-1): Forward Ilya Kovalchuk, who returned to the NHL this season after five years in the KHL, recorded his first two assists Sunday to give him 401 in his NHL career. Center Anze Kopitar has scored in both games to pull him within eight of the 300-career goal mark, and Jack Campbell made 36 saves against the Red Wings in place of Quick. Tuesday marks the start of a four-game road trip for the Kings, who play six of their next eight away from home.

ABOUT THE JETS (1-1-0): One area of concern for Winnipeg is its undisciplined play through two games, committing nine penalties through 120 minutes. Forward Kyle Connor scored for the second time in two games and has three points with a plus-3 rating. Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck made 30 saves against the Stars but was under pressure most of the night, as the Jets play their home opener Tuesday and begin a stretch of seven home games in eight days (they travel to Nashville on Thursday).

          OVERTIME

          1. Kovalchuk played his first eight NHL seasons with the Jets franchise when it was based in Atlanta, scoring 328 goals with 615 points in 594 games.

          2. Winnipeg's top line of Connor, C Mark Scheifele and F Blake Wheeler, have combined for three goals, four assists and a plus-5 rating through two games.

          3. Kings D Drew Doughty played in his 330th consecutive NHL game Sunday, tying Kopitar for longest streak in franchise history.

          PREDICTION: Jets 3, Kings 2

Flames vs. Predators Preview and Predictions

            by Gracenote on 10/08/2018

The Nashville Predators found a way to post a pair of one-goal victories to start the season on the road, despite being outshot, and look to stay unbeaten when they open at home against the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night. The Predators swept the Rangers and Islanders during their trip to New York without any help from the power play and come home where they registered 60 points (28 wins) in 41 regular-season games in 2017-18.

"That's how you want to start, right?" Nashville forward Craig Smith, who had a team-high 10 shots in the first two games, told reporters. "I think we did a lot of good things. It was a good test being on the road; we got together in different ways than we had the last couple of weeks." The Predators lost both meetings with Calgary at home last season, including one in a shootout, and the Flames arrive after scoring seven times in their home opener. Calgary disappointed while going 0-for-7 on the power play in a 5-2 loss in its opener at Vancouver last Wednesday before going 3-for-6 with the man advantage in Saturday's 7-4 victory against those same Canucks. "I thought there were lots of ebbs and flows," Flames coach Bill Peters told reporters after recording his first win with the team. "Special teams were big (Saturday) and there were big moments in the game and we made enough plays to get away."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, Sportsnet Flames, FS Tennessee (Nashville)

ABOUT THE FLAMES (1-1-0): Elias Lindholm, an offseason acquisition from Carolina where he played for Peters, had two goals and an assist in his home debut with Calgary - playing with Sean Monahan and Johnny Gaudreau on the top line. "It's good for those guys when you change teams to get a goal right away," Peters told reporters of Lindholm. "He plays hard, he plays that way each and every night, gives guys lots of good looks." Power forward Matthew Tkachuk leads the way with five points (one goal, four assists) and Gaudreau is next with four (one, three) while leading the team with eight shots.

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (2-0-0): Nashville failed on one power play chance in each of the first two games and spread out the scoring with 10 players notching at least one point. The defense pairing of P.K. Subban and Mattias Ekholm have three points apiece while forward Colton Sissons has matched them through the first two games while right wing Viktor Arvidsson scored twice in Saturday's 4-3 victory over the Islanders. Reigning Vezina Trophy winner Pekka Rinne turned aside 34 shots in the 3-2 opening-night victory over the Rangers and is expected to get the start after Juuse Saros played Saturday.

            OVERTIME

            1. Calgary D Travis Hamonic (facial fracture) is expected to miss his second straight game after playing in the opener.

            2. Nashville C Ryan Johansen had four points (two goals) in three games against Calgary last season.

            3. Flames D Mark Giordano boasts three points and a team-best plus-3 rating through the first two games.

            PREDICTION: Predators 5, Flames 3

Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Dallas Stars Preview and Predictions 10-09-2018 in NHL

NHL Previews 8th October 2018 by Gracenote
              by Gracenote on 10/08/2018

While John Tavares is endearing himself to his new team's fanbase with a strong start to the season, teammate Auston Matthews is beloved in Toronto as well. Named the NHL's First Star of the Week, Matthews aims to extend his scorching start to the new campaign on Tuesday when the Maple Leafs continue their four-game road trip with a visit to the Dallas Stars.

Matthews doubled his point total with his second career four-point performance in Toronto's wild 7-6 overtime win against Chicago on Sunday. "I'm sure it's a game that the coaches don't like, but as players it's definitely pretty fun to play in. Going back and forth like that as a player, it's pretty fun," said Matthews, who is the seventh player in Maple Leafs history to record multi-point efforts in each of his team's first three games of a season. Keeping Toronto's high-powered offense under wraps will be the task of Ben Bishop, who secured NHL Third Star of the Week honors after turning aside 62 of 63 shots with one shutout to begin the season. "When we have our healthy (Bishop) back there, we're a dangerous team," defenseman Marc Methot told reporters of his goaltender, who made 32 saves in a 5-1 triumph over Winnipeg on Saturday.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, TSN4, FS Southwest (Dallas)

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (2-1-0): Tavares' ninth career hat trick on Sunday gave him four goals in three games since signing a seven-year, $77 million contract. "(I) want to be as consistent as I can so I prepare myself and expect a lot of myself on a nightly basis, with and without the puck," the 28-year-old Ontario native told reporters. Fellow center Patrick Marleau has set up four goals this season and resides two shy of 600 for his career.

ABOUT THE STARS (2-0-0): The top line of Tyler Seguin, captain Jamie Benn and Alexander Radulov accounted for all five goals versus the Jets, with Seguin collecting two goals and two assists while Benn (two power-play goals, assist) and Radulov (goal, two assists) added three-point performances. Seguin fared well in both of last season's meetings with Toronto, as he recorded his team's lone tally in a 4-1 setback at home on Jan. 25 before collecting a goal and two assists in a 6-5 shootout loss on March 14. Benn has 11 points (four goals, seven assists) in 13 career encounters with the Maple Leafs while Jason Spezza has 58 points (19 goals, 39 assists) against his hometown team.

              OVERTIME

              1. Dallas D Connor Carrick will see many familiar faces on Tuesday after being traded from Toronto last week.

              2. Maple Leafs D Morgan Rielly doubled his season point total on Sunday after notching two assists before scoring the overtime goal.

              3. Dallas and Toronto are both 3-for-7 on the power play this season.

PREDICTION: Maple Leafs 5, Stars 4

                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  The Walker Group Picks

                  # 3 UWANDADANCE 5/2

                  # 5 TRAIPSE IN UTOPIA 7/2

                  # 6 TIME FOR A PARTY 6/1

UWANDADANCE is my choice. Is a strong contender based on figures earned recently under today's conditions. Could best this group here, showing very good numbers of late. Will most likely compete very well in the early speed contest which bodes well with this group. TRAIPSE IN UTOPIA - Demonstrates the look of a lucrative play, averaging a solid 62 speed figure which is one of the strongest in this field. Seems to have a very strong class edge based on the latest company kept. TIME FOR A PARTY - With a nice class fig average of 74, has one of the top class advantages in this group. Should come out strong - I have liked the way this mare has moved rapidly to the front end recently.

                      # 7 BROCKTON GEORGE 6/1

                      # 8 MARQ ONE 2/1

                      # 2 BEST CHOICE 10/1

BROCKTON GEORGE is my choice. A solid 96 avg class fig may give this gelding a distinct class edge versus this field. He must be given a shot given the quite good speed numbers. Has a strong record at the distance and surface, which makes me have to consider this gelding. MARQ ONE - Vaunts solid Equibase speed figs on average overall when compared with the rest of this group. This gelding looks good in this competition since Pino has a sharp winning percentage with horses going this distance. BEST CHOICE - Has formidable early lick and ought to fare very well versus this field. Garnered a solid speed figure in the last race. Can run another good one in this contest.

GATLING - This gelding is in nice physical condition, having run a good race on Sep 25th, finishing second. This is the only real presser in the race. This one is not the morning line favorite, yet he finished ahead of today's chalk in their last race together. MATTHEW'S AGENDA - Finished ahead of today's favorite last out at Thistledown. Can do the same again in this race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 HIGH FRANCESCO (ML=5/2), #5 BRILLIANT BOY (ML=6/1), #1 WE WILL SHINE (ML=6/1),

HIGH FRANCESCO - Last performed on Sep 25th at Thistledown, finishing fourth. Not likely to advance off of that performance in today's race. WE WILL SHINE - If you keep playing these sort of 'bridesmaid' types, you're going to be let down regularly.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - MATTHEW'S AGENDA - Steady improvement in his speed ratings, 59 last race and 49 two races back. This racer is going to be tough against these thoroughbreds.

                        STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Go with #2 GATLING on top if we're getting at least 7/5 odds

                          #4 MY COUNTRY GIRL (ML=5/2)

ROLL ON MATILDA - Faced tougher last race out at Ruidoso Downs. Based on Equibase class figures, this is a weaker group, so I will put this animal on my list of strong contenders. You have to like that most recent race speed figure, 74, which is the highest last race speed figure of this field. I like this filly. Has the uppermost earnings per race in today's contest. MY COUNTRY GIRL - Jock hops back up atop after getting to know the horse by riding in the last race. That's always a good to see. Taking a trip down the class ladder; has the capability to make her presence felt.

                          Vulnerable Contenders: #7 JULIE WHO (ML=5/1), #3 FLIGHT SONG (ML=6/1), #5 SINGING MARY (ML=8/1),

JULIE WHO - Didn't close any ground whatsoever on Sep 2nd. Hard to wager on in today's event at the expected odds. When looking at today's Equibase class figure, she will have to garner a much better speed rating than last out to vie in this dirt sprint. FLIGHT SONG - The rating last race out doesn't fit very well in this contest when I look at the class rating of today's contest. Mark this horse as a vulnerable contender. SINGING MARY - Not easy to wager on this steed today. Make her show you something in a sprint race before you wager on her in a race of 5 1/2 furlongs.

The Boston Red Sox look to wrap up a berth in the American League Championship Series when they visit the New York Yankees on Tuesday in Game 4 of the AL Division Series. The Red Sox unleashed an 18-hit attack in a 16-1 pounding of the Yankees on Monday to take a 2-1 edge in the best-of-five series.

Brock Holt hit for the first cycle in postseason history and drove in five runs as Boston handed New York its worst postseason margin of defeat in the franchise's storied history. "Offensively, we were clicking on all cylinders," Holt said in a postgame interview on TBS. "We put together a lot of good at-bats. It was fun." The Yankees look to stay alive in Game 4 and manager Aaron Boone said the only choice is to immediately erase the drubbing from their minds. "No choice but to flush," Boone said in his postgame press conference. "The good thing around (Game 3) is it's one game, and as awful of a night as it was for us, we got to turn the page, and (Game 4 is) obviously do or die."

                            TV: 8:07 p.m. ET, TBS

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox RH Rick Porcello (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Yankees LH CC Sabathia (9-7, 3.65)

Porcello was 17-7 with a 4.28 ERA in 33 starts during the regular season, but gave up one hit while retiring two batters in a relief stint in Game 1. The 29-year-old has never recorded a postseason victory - he is 0-3 with a 5.33 ERA in 12 career appearances (four starts) - and is looking to change that with the ALCS spot on the line. "This is what it's all about," Porcello said in a press conference. "You get an opportunity to have the ball in Yankee Stadium, Game 4, this is the culmination of the entire season and leads up to your opportunities in the postseason. So I'm definitely looking forward to that and giving us a chance to win."

Sabathia hasn't pitched since Sept. 27 when he tossed five innings of one-hit shutout ball against the Tampa Bay Rays. The 38-year-old is well versed in postseason pressure due to 23 appearances (22 starts) while compiling a 10-6 record and 4.20 ERA. "I think it helps just to have experience being out there," Sabathia said in a press conference. "I can slow the game down. It's all the same now. It's not - no game is bigger than the other. So I think it helps in that way, and I've been in those situations a lot."

                            WALK-OFFS

                            1. The Red Sox's 16 runs on Monday were their second most in a postseason game, topped by a 23-7 victory over the Cleveland Indians in Game 4 of the 1999 ALDS.

                            2. New York CF Aaron Hicks (hamstring) has missed the past two games and said he will lobby to be in the starting lineup for Game 4.

                            3. Boston 1B Mitch Moreland (hamstring) missed Game 3 but is expected to be available on Tuesday.

PREDICTION: Yankees 8, Red Sox 7
