Portland Trail Blazers vs. New York Knicks Preview and Predictions 11-20-2018

NBA Predictions 19th November 2018 by Gracenote
    by Gracenote on 11/19/2018

Portland star guard Damian Lillard is fresh off his third 40-point effort of the season as he leads the Trail Blazers into Tuesday's game against the host New York Knicks. Lillard's 40 points fueled Sunday's 119-109 win over the Washington Wizards as Portland improved to 1-2 on a six-game road trip.

The Trail Blazers began the excursion with losses to the Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves before opening the game against Washington with a 32-12 run en route to the victory. "I think the way we played, we got the ball out and pushed it, we screened, our execution was at a much faster pace, which made it harder to guard," Lillard told reporters afterward. "We got them scrambling and helping." The Knicks are sliding in the wrong direction with five straight losses after falling 131-117 to the Orlando Magic on Sunday. "It's one quarter every game," Knicks coach David Fizdale told reporters of his club's woes. "If you go back through all of them it's one quarter where the doors get blown off. I can't put my thumb on it. It's different mistakes every game, but it's a quarter. Somehow I've got to get it to where we can get 48 minutes out of this group."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBATV, NBCS Northwest (Portland), MSG (New York) LINE: Blazers -7.5

ABOUT THE TRAIL BLAZERS (11-5): Lillard is averaging 29 points on the road trip despite 25-of-70 shooting from the field but he is a stellar 30-of-34 from the line during the stretch. Shooting guard CJ McCollum is averaging 22 points on the excursion and has topped 20 points in five of the past eight games, topped by a 40-point effort against the Milwaukee Bucks on Nov. 6. Center Jusuf Nurkic was impressive as a passer against Washington while matching his career best of eight assists and also contributed 13 points and 14 rebounds for his fourth straight double-double.

ABOUT THE KNICKS (4-13): Backup guard Trey Burke is averaging 27.5 points on 21-of-33 shooting over the past two games after not even being inserted into three of the previous four games. Burke tallied 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting in Friday's loss to the New Orleans Pelicans and scored a season-best 31 against the Magic two nights later. "When my number's called, I can't be something I'm not," Burke told reporters. "I have to be the guard that I am. Coach (Fizdale) told me to attack. That's what I'm going to do. I can't try to please being someone I'm not. That's what I did earlier in the season. For this team to win, I have to be the Trey Burke everyone knows I can be."

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. The Trail Blazers won both of last season's meetings and have prevailed in three straight matchups.

    2. New York SG Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 32 points against Orlando for his second consecutive 30-point effort and fifth of the season.

    3. Portland backup SG Seth Curry (knee) will miss his third straight game.

PREDICTION: Trail Blazers 119, Knicks 114

Edmonton Oilers vs. San Jose Sharks Preview and Predictions 11-20-2018

NHL Predictions 19th November 2018 by Gracenote
      by Gracenote on 11/19/2018

Edmonton Oilers superstar captain Connor McDavid thought his team had turned the corner following a sizzling 11-game run only to find itself on the seat of its pants with losses in six of the last seven contests. The Oilers look to pick themselves up once again on Tuesday when they visit the San Jose Sharks to begin a three-game trek through California.

"Obviously it is frustrating, there is no other way to say it," McDavid told reporters. "Especially because we have shown we can be a good team. We had that (8-2-1) stretch where we looked really good and now we have wavered and find ourselves dipping a bit. We just have to get back to that brand of hockey that we know we can play." The 21-year-old McDavid opened the scoring 52 seconds into Sunday's 6-3 setback versus Vegas to move one goal shy of 100 for his career. While Edmonton is spiraling down a mediocre Pacific Division, San Jose entered Monday's action in first place with wins in three of its last four contests. Captain Joe Pavelski was named the NHL's Third Star of the Week on Monday, two days removed from recording his fourth straight multi-point performance in a 4-0 win over St. Louis.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, Sportsnet West (Edmonton), NBCS California (San Jose)

ABOUT THE OILERS (9-10-1): Leon Draisaitl is doing all he can to alter Edmonton's struggling ways, as the 23-year-old has pulled even with McDavid in goals (12) after scoring five in his last seven outings in addition to setting up four others. Goaltender Cam Talbot has been waiting on his 100th win with the Oilers for five long games, as he has posted a gaudy 4.63 goals-against average and .845 save percentage during that stretch. The 31-year-old split a pair of encounters with San Jose last season and owns a 5-3-2 mark with a 2.68 GAA and .907 save percentage in 10 career meetings.

ABOUT THE SHARKS (11-7-3): Two-time Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson scored his first goal since March 27 - then a member of the Ottawa Senators - with a power-play tally at 3:34 of the second period on Saturday. "I've been feeling good all year; it just hasn't worked out on the scoresheet," the 28-year-old Swede told reporters. "But sometimes that's the way it is. I don't think I'm doing anything different now." Karlsson set up Evander Kane just over four minutes later to notch consecutive multi-point performances and extend his assist streak to three games.

      OVERTIME

      1. San Jose C Logan Couture leads the team's forwards in assists (14) after setting up three goals for the seventh time in his career on Saturday.

      2. Edmonton RW Alex Chiasson has scored in back-to-back contests to push his point streak to three games.

      3. The Sharks have not allowed a power-play goal in their last six games and are 44-for-46 on the penalty kill in their last 17 overall.

      PREDICTION: Sharks 4, Oilers 2

Clemson Tigers vs. Georgia Bulldogs Preview and Predictions 11-20-2018

NCAAB Predictions 19th November 2018 by Gracenote
Clemson senior Shelton Mitchell watched fellow guard Marcquise Reed take over a close game against Sam Houston State last Wednesday. Mitchell did the same Monday to push the 16th-ranked Tigers to the semifinals of the Cayman Islands Classic against Georgia on Tuesday.

Reed scored 26 points - two shy of his career high - and added five rebounds, three assists and two steals in 38 minutes as the Tigers pulled away with a 74-59 win over the Bearkats. It was Mitchell's turn Monday as the 6-3 guard scored four points, added three steals and an assist during a first-half 8-1 run after Akron had taken a 23-22 lead with 5:55 left. Mitchell added 12 points in the second half, including a three-point play with 9:37 that provided the Tigers their biggest lead at 15 points, and finished with a season-high 22 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists. Georgia made quick work of Illinois State in its first-round game, as sophomore forwards Rayshaun Hammonds and Nicolas Claxton combined for 53 points and 18 rebounds.

TV: 2:30 PM ET, None LINE: Check Intertops for the latest line

ABOUT CLEMSON (4-0): Mitchell, who transferred in after playing his freshman season at Vanderbilt, averaged double figures in scoring each of his first two seasons and is chipping in 15.5 points, 3.5 assists and two steals in 2018-19. Reed (17.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists per game) took over after Mitchell's conventional three-point play by scoring 10 of his 16 points over the last six minutes of the game to help hold off the Zips. Senior forward Elijah Thomas, who had just nine points and eight rebounds in his previous two games, responded with 15 points and 12 rebounds - six offensive - and Aamir Simms contributed 12 points.

ABOUT GEORGIA (3-1): The Bulldogs led by 21 points at the half and cruised thereafter, as the 6-8 Hammonds (17.0 points, 6.0 rebounds) scored a career-high 31 points (previous high was 21 last season against LSU) on 11-of-22 shooting and hauled in seven rebounds. Claxton (14.3 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 2.8 blocks), a versatile 6-11 wing player who can run the floor, handle the ball and protect the rim, added a career-best 22 points (15 versus Savannah State in the opener) on 8-of-13 shooting with 11 rebounds, four assists and two blocks. "Our guys really came out from the beginning, and they got it back on their heels which was going to be important for the team," said Georgia head coach Tom Crean. "We knew they were going to make a run, and much like we have in the past, we were able to answer it, stop it and move forward. We are going to need every bit of that and more for Clemson tomorrow."

        TIP-INS

        1. The teams have alternated wins and losses when playing each other over their last 10 games. Clemson prevailed in the most recent meeting 74-64 in 2016 behind 19 points off the bench from Reed.

        2. Clemson only got five points and four shots from its bench in 58 minutes against Akron, with sophomore guard Clyde Trapp contributing three points, five rebounds and three assists in 26 minutes.

        3. Georgia shot 54.8 percent from the floor in the first half, including 3-of-6 beyond the arc, and drained 10-of-12 free throws.

        PREDICTION: Georgia 74, Clemson 71

Xavier Musketeers vs. San Diego St. Aztecs Preview and Predictions 11-20-2018

NCAAB Predictions 19th November 2018 by Gracenote
Xavier meets San Diego State in the Maui Invitational consolation bracket Tuesday after nearly upsetting the nation's No. 9 team in the first round. The Musketeers rallied from a five-point deficit with less than a minute remaining in regulation to force overtime before getting outscored 11-2 in the extra session in an 88-79 loss to Auburn.

"I am really proud of the way our guys competed,'' first-year Xavier coach Travis Steele told reporters. "We have another big-time game (Tuesday) and we'll have to be ready for that.'' The Musketeers' balanced attack boasts six double-figure scorers with three players -- sophomore forward Naji Marshall (8.3 rebounds per game), junior guard Quentin Goodin and senior forward Ryan Welage -- averaging 13.3 points. The Aztecs were the latest team to feel the wrath of No. 1 Duke with Monday's 90-64 loss their first of the season. San Diego State is led by senior guard Devin Watson, who averages 16.3 points after scoring 15 against the Blue Devils on Monday.

TV: 2:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2 LINE: Check Intertops for the latest line

ABOUT XAVIER (2-2): Junior forward Tyrique Jones (11.8 points, 66.7 shooting percentage) recorded seven points and nine rebounds -- right at his team-high average -- versus Auburn and also shares the club lead in steals (six) with sophomore guard Paul Scruggs (12.8 points). Senior forward Zach Hankins (10.5 points, 6.0 rebounds) has a club-most 10 blocks while shooting 65.2 percent from the field. Marshall followed up a career game versus Wisconsin (24 points, 13 rebounds) with 10 points and eight boards versus Auburn but committed seven of the Musketeers' 22 turnovers.

ABOUT SAN DIEGO STATE (2-1): The Aztecs boast a balanced scoring attack with four players in double figures including sophomore forward Matt Mitchell (14 per game). Sophomore forward Jalen McDaniels -- like Mitchell -- scored 11 versus Duke and averages 13.3 points and a team-high 7.7 rebounds. Senior guard Jeremy Hemsley averages 12 points after scoring 12 on Monday while sophomore guard Jordan Schakel was held to five points while battling foul trouble after scoring a combined 23 in his first two games.

          TIP-INS

          1. Xavier outrebounds its opponents by an average of 42.0-33.3 this season after winning the battle on the boards against Auburn 42-35.

          2. The Musketeers have committed 57 turnovers compared to 43 by their foes.

          3. San Diego State is 5-5 in the Maui Classic while Xavier is playing in the tournament for the first time.

Iowa State Cyclones vs. Illinois Fighting Illini Preview and Predictions 11-20-2018

NCAAB Predictions 20th November 2018 by Gracenote
After leading Arizona by 10 points in the second half on Monday at the Maui Invitational, short-handed Iowa State faltered down the stretch en route to a 71-66 loss. The Cyclones look to bounce back in Tuesday's consolation round against Illinois, which gave No. 3 Gonzaga a late scare in their first-round matchup before losing 84-78.

Iowa State has just eight available scholarship players in Maui with Lindell Wigginton (foot), Cameron Lard (suspension), Solomon Young (groin) and Zoran Talley (suspension) all sidelined, but the Cyclones made a positive impression on Arizona coach Sean Miller. "They're missing not only an All Big-12 performer (Wigginton), but a number of other players," Miller told reporters. "I think it's to their credit that they're as good of a team right now without them as they are. And when those guys get back, I would fully expect them to make a run and be in the NCAA Tournament." The Cyclones will need another strong effort against Illinois, which has lost back-to-back games to Georgetown and Gonzaga following a season-opening win over Evansville. True freshman guard Ayo Dosunmu averaged 21.5 points in his first two games before finishing with six on 2-of-7 shooting against Gonzaga.

TV: 5 p.m. ET, ESPN2 LINE: Check Intertops for the latest line

ABOUT IOWA STATE (3-1): Coach Steve Prohm's four-guard lineup includes senior Marial Shayok, who averages a team-high 19.8 points and recorded 19 and 14 rebounds against Arizona. True freshman Talen Horton-Tucker continued to impress with 16 points and seven rebounds, while junior forward Michael Jacobson finished with 16 and seven. Senior guard Nick Weiler-Babb is averaging 11.8 points and six rebounds for the Cyclones, who missed their first nine 3-point attempts against Arizona and finished 4-for-25 from beyond the arc.

ABOUT ILLINOIS (1-2): Starting point guard Trent Frazier, who led all Big Ten freshmen last season in scoring, assists, steals and 3-pointers during conference play, returned after missing one game due to a concussion and scored 27 of his team-high 29 points in the second half on Monday. Frazier was 6-for-13 from 3-point range and helped press Gonzaga into 22 turnovers. Coach Brad Underwood continues to be pleased by the play of freshman forward Giorgi Bezhanishvili, who took another step forward with 17 points and six rebounds against the Zags.

            TIP-INS

            1. The winner advances to Wednesday's fifth-place game against either Xavier or San Diego State.

            2. The teams last met on Nov. 28, 2015, when Iowa State defeated Illinois 84-73 to win the Emerald Coast Classic.

            3. Lard and Talley are expected to be reinstated in time for the Cyclones' home game against North Dakota State on Dec. 3.

California Golden Bears vs. Temple Owls Preview and Predictions 11-20-2018

NCAAB Predictions 20th November 2018 by Gracenote
California has to wonder how it ended up in the consolation game of the Legends Classic against Temple. The Bears arrived in Brooklyn, N.Y. and shot nearly 57 percent in the semifinals, draining 44.4 percent of their 3-pointers and 81.3 percent of their foul shots, but their defense let them down Monday.

Darius McNeill made five 3-pointers en route to 21 points and Justice Sueing added 19 points in a losing effort against St. John's. Cal had no answer for Shamorie Ponds, who scored 32 points in the 82-79 win, so it remains to be seen how the Bears will handle Temple's dynamic backcourt. The Owls are led by Shizz Alston Jr. and Quinton Rose, but the two upperclassmen are each coming off a poor effort in a semifinal loss to VCU on Monday. Alston and Rose combined to shoot 6-of-29 against the Rams as Temple absorbed its first loss of the campaign.

TV: 5 p.m. ET, ESPNU LINE: Check Intertops for the latest line

ABOUT CALIFORNIA (1-2): Paris Austin has scored at least 17 points in all three games, his first three since transferring from Boise State. He has been joined in double figures the last two games by McNeill, who is 8-of-16 from 3-point land over the last two contests and has seven steals in the three games. Sueing, who shot 3-of-14 in the season opener, is 9-of-17 for a combined 36 points over the last two outings.

ABOUT TEMPLE (4-1): Nate Pierre-Louis has given the team a nice spark this season, scoring in double figures in all five games. He also had eight rebounds and six steals against VCU, and the sophomore guard has registered 14 steals over the last four outings. Rose has continued to struggle with his shooting, missing all five of his 3s against VCU to drop to 3-of-21 from beyond the arc this season.

              TIP-INS

              1. Sueing (nine) was the only Bears player with more than three rebounds against St. John's.

              2. Cal F Andre Kelly has opened his college career 11-of-14 from the floor and is averaging 10.3 points.

              3. Alston, who is 17-of-17 from the free-throw line this season, did not attempt a foul shot versus VCU.

              PREDICTION: California 69, Temple 63

Texas A&M Aggies vs. Washington Huskies Preview and Predictions 11-20-2018

NCAAB Predictions 19th November 2018 by Gracenote
Jaylen Nowell made a statement in the opener of the Vancouver Showcase, and the sophomore star seeks an encore when he leads Washington into a matchup with Texas A&M in Canada on Tuesday. Nowell electrified the Vancouver Convention Centre with 32 points - 21 in the first half - in an 82-68 win over Santa Clara on Sunday.

"Special player, efficient, gets in the lane, tough to guard," Huskies coach Mike Hopkins told the media of his sophomore guard. "Just lucky he is on our team." Nowell was 11-for-15 from the floor and made four of his six 3-point tries in the inaugural event's opener and will present a major challenge for an Aggies team that has dropped three in a row. Texas A&M rallied in the second half in Sunday's nightcap against Minnesota before falling 69-64. "We thought we had good momentum going down the stretch, but we struggled (to score) the last three, four minutes," Aggies coach Billy Kennedy told reporters. "We didn't get good shots or run good offense and you have to give Minnesota credit. I thought they showed a little more poise down the stretch than we did."

TV: 11:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2 LINEA: Check Intertops for the latest line

ABOUT TEXAS A&M (1-3): Sophomore Brandon Mahan scored a team-high 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting against the Golden Gophers after going 4-for-21 from the floor through his first three games. Guard Savion Flagg leads the team in scoring (15.5) but to score to a season-low nine points in Sunday's loss. He and second-leading scorer TJ Starks (12.8) are a combined 9-for-46 from 3-point range, and the Aggies entered Monday ranked 345th in the country in that category at 22.2 percent.

ABOUT WASHINGTON (3-1): Forward Noah Dickerson ranks second to Nowell in scoring (14.3) and leads the Huskies on the boards with six per game. Fellow senior Matisse Thybulle missed all five of his shots against Santa Clara, falling to 9-for-30 from the floor early on, and the program's all-time leader in steals had a rare game without one. Dominic Green, another senior, hit just 1-of-11 shots in his first three games before making 4-of-5 and breaking out with 13 points versus the Broncos.

                TIP-INS

                1. Washington plays Minnesota on Wednesday in the finale of the event.

                2. Starks leads the Aggies with four assists per game but he's also committed 22 turnovers in the first four contests.

                3. Texas A&M owns a 4-2 lead in the all-time series.

                PREDICTION: Washington 75, Texas A&M 67

Arizona Wildcats vs. Gonzaga Bulldogs Preview and Predictions 11-20-2018

NCAAB Predictions 20th November 2018 by Gracenote
Replacing five starters has gone better than expected for Arizona, which improved to 4-0 with Monday's 71-66 win over Iowa State in a first-round matchup at the Maui Invitational. The Wildcats take another step up in competition Tuesday in a semifinal game against No. 3 Gonzaga, which opened tournament play with an 84-78 win over Illinois.

Senior guard Justin Coleman scored a team-high 18 points for Arizona, which averaged 83.7 points in wins over Houston Baptist, Cal Poly and UTEP before grinding out a comeback victory over Iowa State. "I'm just proud of our guys. I feel like today just showed how we loved each other as brothers," Coleman told reporters. "It just shows the connection we have as a team because we got out-rebounded, we got down 10, but it showed the effort and the togetherness we had through adversity to get back and win the game." The Wildcats face their toughest test of the young season against Gonzaga, which survived a late scare from Illinois behind 23 points from preseason All-American Rui Hachimura. The 6-8 combo forward is helping the Zags adjust without star forward Killian Tillie, who will likely miss most of the non-conference season with an ankle injury.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN LINEA: Check Intertops for the latest line

ABOUT ARIZONA (4-0): Duke transfer Chase Jeter continued to impress with 10 points and 12 rebounds against Iowa State, while 6-9 forward Ryan Luther made two key free throws late in the game and finished with 12 points and eight boards. Freshman guard Brandon Williams missed nine of his 11 field-goal attempts but scored 14 points and has 20 assists against two turnovers through his first four games. Guard Dylan Smith was a key reserve as a sophomore last season but has struggled early on, averaging 4.5 points on 5-of-20 shooting - including 4-of-13 from 3-point range.

ABOUT GONZAGA (4-0): The Zags struggled against Illinois' pressure and committed 22 turnovers but remained unbeaten after shooting 52.9 percent. Guard Zach Norvell Jr., who entered the tournament averaging 17.7 points and 5.7 rebounds, finished with 15 points against Illinois while senior forward Jeremy Jones added 14 and 11 rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench. Coach Mark Few used an eight-man rotation in the first-round matchup - including 6-11 freshman Filip Petrusev, who continued to make a case for more playing time with five points and six boards.

Nebraska Cornhuskers vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders Preview and Predictions 11-20-2018

NCAAB Predictions 20th November 2018 by Gracenote
No. 24 Nebraska has been impressive in the first four games while winning by an average of almost 42 points, but will likely gets the toughest test yet when it takes on Texas Tech in the championship game of the Hall of Fame Classic in Kansa City on Tuesday. The experienced Cornhuskers got 23 points from senior forward Isaac Copeland as they pulled away in the second half for an 85-62 victory over Missouri State in the semifinals Monday.

Nebraska weathered an off night from leading scorer James Palmer Jr. (eight points) while scoring at least 80 for the fourth straight game and the Cornhuskers led the nation in field-goal percentage defense to start the week. "We've got a very solid group," Nebraska coach Tim Miles told the Lincoln Journal Star. "When you listen to them, you know they're grounded in the right things. They're a fun team to coach. I trust them, and I think that's important, too." Texas Tech lost five of its top seven scorers from last season's Elite Eight team, but the Red Raiders have won their first four games of 2018-19 after putting up 55 second-half points to rally for a 78-63 victory over USC in Monday's semifinals. Sophomore guard Jarrett Culver leads Texas Tech at 16.8 points per game after scoring 18 on Monday while pulling down a season-high nine rebounds.

Top-ranked Duke appears to have the horses to win its sixth national championship and hopes to continue proving it when the Blue Devils host No. 9 Auburn on Tuesday in the Maui Invitational. Duke routed San Diego State 90-64 on Monday behind 20 points from freshman forward RJ Barrett (team-high 24 points per game), while freshman forward Zion Williamson (22.3) played only seven minutes in the first half because of foul trouble.

The Tigers defeated Xavier 88-79 in overtime Monday behind Bryce Brown's season-high 26 points in what coach Bruce Pearl called "a great win for our program.'' Brown, a senior guard who also had five rebounds and four assists, told the school website prior to the tournament: "Hopefully, we get past Xavier and play Duke. That would be a really good test. Having a chance to go up against Duke would be a really good opportunity for us." Brown scores 16.8 points per game and is part of a balanced attack that features five players averaging in double figures.
