2-Unit Play. Take #714 Dayton (-14.5) over Detroit (7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 4)
Apparently Mike Davis is an even better coach than I thought and his son is an even better player than I thought. Detroit came into this season in one of the worst situations in the country. Davis wasn't hired until the summer, meaning he had to scramble to find coaches and even players. They have played way beyond their expectations and are on a ridiculous 7-0 ATS run. But I don't think that a bad team can keep a streak like that going. And even though Detroit has been playing above its head they are still a bad team. Dayton has to be pretty salty right now. They are on a three-game losing streak. But they definitely should've beaten Mississippi State at home their last time out, choking away a seven-point lead late. They also played Virginia tough after beating Butler. This is a decent little squad and they will do some damage in the A-10. And after taking on four straight big-time opponents Dayton has to be ready to shake off the frustration of their losses and get a blowout win here.
1-Unit Play. Take #735 Michigan (-5.5) over Northwestern (9 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 4)
Why not? Let's ride the hot hand here. Michigan has been laying waste to people. They beat Purdue by 19. They beat North Carolina by 17. They beat Villanova by 27. And no one has stayed within 15 points of the Wolverines yet this year. Northwestern has been less impressive. They were already blown out by Fresno State. They were outscored by 14 points in the second half by a bad Georgia Tech team and then lost a tough one at Indiana. Vic Law will do what he can. And the line movement on this game suggests something strange is afoot. But I just don't think Northwestern is any good. And I certainly don't think these guys are good enough to slow down the freight train that is the Wolverines right now.
2-Unit Play. Take #738 Oklahoma (-2) over Notre Dame (7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 4)
I have been a lot higher on this Sooners team than a lot of people. And I think that they can pick up another impressive win here in Madison Square Garden. I like this Notre Dame team a little more than other people as well. But they have not left their home court once this year and that will come back to haunt them. Oklahoma is also the first Top 50 team that the Irish have faced. The two best teams that they've taken on to this point were Radford (who beat the Irish) and Illinois (who nearly beat them). Oklahoma is tough. They have a solid eight-man rotation and four senior starters. Everyone expected this team to fall off the map without Trae Young. But I still say that they struggled last year because of Young, not in spite of him. These guys are better defensively and they play much better team basketball.
3-Unit Play. Take #717 Syracuse (-11.5) over Northeastern (6:45 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 4)
The Orange are erratic. But I think that they will be better tonight. They are too big and too athletic for Northeastern. The Huskies are shooters. But shooters don't bust the zone. Teams that can get on the interior are the teams that Syracuse struggle defending. That isn't Northeastern. The Huskies are going to be playing without their two best players from last year, Shawn Occeus and Vasa Pusica, and three of five starters from last year are injured right now. Northeastern might have given the Orange a game at full strength. But I don't see it happening today, shorthanded and on the road. Northeastern struggled a bit against Eastern Michigan's zone their last time out. And EMU stinks. Northeastern shot 57 percent in that game. They won't do that tonight. And I can see them getting run by an Orange squad primed for a bounce back after a poor game against Cornell.
1-Unit Play. TEASER: Take #717 Syracuse (-6.5) over Northeastern (6:45 p.m.) AND Take #750 Colorado (-6) over South Dakota (9 p.m.)
1-Unit Play. TEASER: Take #714 Dayton (-9.5) over Detroit (7 p.m.) AND Take #735 Michigan (-0.5) over Northwestern (9 p.m.)
My 25 dime selection is on the Penn over Miami/Florida. The current line on this game as of 12:20 pm EST is +6 in Vegas and offshore. Be sure to shop around for the best line available.
