Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Virginia Tech Hokies Preview and Predictions 2019-01-01

NCAAB Predictions 31st December 2018 by Gracenote
    by Gracenote on 12/31/2018

Notre Dame and Virginia Tech kick off their ACC season on New Year's Day as the Fighting Irish visit the 10th-ranked Hokies. Both teams are coming off wins following their holiday breaks, with Notre Dame edging Coppin State and the Hokies thumping Maryland-Eastern Shore.

The Irish were trailing by nine with 9:53 remaining in the second half on Saturday but stepped up on the defensive end, forcing four turnovers while finishing the game on a 25-9 run. "We knew we had to do it on the defensive end. It wasn't about our offense at that point. We know our offense was going to come," Notre Dame junior guard T.J. Gibbs told reporters after the game. Virginia Tech wrapped up the non-conference schedule in style with an 85-40 win over the Hawks for its sixth win in a row. The victory broke a school record for consecutive non-conference wins at home with 24 and, at 11-1 this season, the Hokies are off to their best start in 100 years.

    TV: 1 p.m. ET, ESPNU

ABOUT NOTRE DAME (10-3): Gibbs, the team's leading scorer at 14.2 points per game, led the Fighting Irish with 15 against Coppin State, even though he shot just 4-of-16 from the field. Junior forward John Mooney added 14 points and eight rebounds, while freshman guard Dane Goodwin scored 13 in 34 minutes off the bench. Notre Dame shot just 33.9 percent in the game, including 28 percent in the second half, as its shooters were rusty following the nine-day holiday layoff.

ABOUT VIRGINIA TECH (11-1): Graduate student Ahmed Hill dropped 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 6-of-9 from the 3-point line, as four Hokies starters hit double figures last time out. Virginia Tech shot 65.9 percent from the floor overall while connecting on 14-of-26 from behind the arc. The Hokies played without leading scorer Nickeil Alexander-Walker (18.5 points per game) as the sophomore guard is out with an ankle injury and his status for Tuesday is uncertain.

    TIP-INS

    1. Virginia Tech is holding opponents to 56.6 points per game on 39 percent shooting.

    2. Notre Dame is playing just its second true road game of the season, with the first being a 65-62 loss at UCLA on Dec. 8.

    3. Fighting Irish F Juwan Durham tied his career high with six blocks and is leading the ACC with 3.25 per game.

PREDICTION: Virginia Tech 65, Notre Dame 59

Winthrop Eagles vs. Florida State Seminoles Preview and Predictions 2019-01-01

NCAAB Predictions 31st December 2018 by Gracenote
      by Gracenote on 12/31/2018

Ninth-ranked Florida State has a major challenge awaiting when the ACC season starts next weekend, but the Seminoles first look to add one more victory as they finish the non-conference slate against visiting Winthrop on Tuesday. Florida State has won six consecutive games and shot at least 50 percent from the field in the last three, including a season-best 55.4 effort in the 81-59 victory over Saint Louis last time out on Dec. 22.

"We still have a lot of growth," Seminoles coach Leonard Hamilton told reporters. "I think we have potential and I expect us to get better as the season goes on, but there's one thing I'm taking away from the early part of the season to feel positive about - it's the fact that we find ways to have some level of success. We just need to continue to stay focused and keep playing hard and I think we have the ability to reach our potential." Florida State, which visits No. 2 Virginia to open its ACC slate on Saturday, is well balanced with senior guard Terance Mann (12.3 points) leading seven players scoring at least 7.5 per contest. The Seminoles have beaten Florida, LSU, Purdue and Connecticut while losing their only game against defending national champion Villanova on Nov. 25 in the final of the AdvoCare Invitational at Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Winthrop comes to Tallahassee with four straight victories after knocking off Prairie View A&M 76-62 on Saturday, but three of the Eagles' eight wins have come against non-Division I opponents and they lost at Florida State 100-86 in 2016.

TV: 2 p.m. ET, ACC Network Extra

ABOUT WINTHROP (8-4): Senior guard Nych Smith leads five players in double figures scoring at 16 per game and dishes out a team-high 3.9 assists while junior forward Josh Ferguson averages 12.8 points and a team-best 7.8 rebounds. Senior guard Adam Pickett adds 11.5 points per contest and is shooting 59.7 percent from the field overall, including 15-of-29 makes from behind the 3-point arc. The Eagles score 90.5 points per game and are connecting on 40.4 percent of their 3-pointers, but they average 16.8 turnovers after coughing the ball up 27 times Saturday.

ABOUT FLORIDA STATE (11-1): Mann scored 17 in each of the last two games, draining 14-of-21 shots from the field in the process, and also tops the team in rebounding (6.8) after hauling in seven against Saint Louis. Sophomore forward Mfiondu Kabengele averages 12 points, including a career-high 24 against North Florida on Dec. 19, and junior guard Trent Forrest adds 11.1 points per game along with team highs of 3.8 assists and 2.4 steals. Sophomore guard M.J. Walker (8.3 points, 17-of-40 from 3-point range) left the Saint Louis game with a knee injury, but it is not believed to be serious.

      TIP-INS

      1. Seminoles senior F Phil Cofer scored seven points against Saint Louis in his second game of the season after returning from a preseason foot injury.

      2. Winthrop sophomore G Kyle Zunic is averaging 13.8 points in his last five games, connecting on 11-of-25 from 3-point range in that span.

      3. Florida State senior C Christ Koumadje leads the team with 20 blocks and needs four to tie Mike Mathews (118) for 10th in school history.

PREDICTION: Florida State 88, Winthrop 70

Marquette Golden Eagles vs. St. John's Red Storm Preview and Predictions 2019-01-01

NCAAB Predictions 31st December 2018 by Gracenote
        by Gracenote on 12/31/2018

St. John's will look to shake off a buzzer-beating loss against Seton Hall to open its Big East schedule when the Red Storm host No. 18 Marquette on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles begin conference play riding an eight-game win streak thanks to junior Markus Howard and his 25.1 points per game, which ranks first in the Big East and fifth in the country.

Howard picked up right where he left off after a seven-day holiday break as the sharpshooting guard followed up a 40-point second half in a Marquette win over No. 20 Buffalo on Dec. 21 with a perfect 8-of-8 first-half shooting performance in a Golden Eagles 84-41 win over Southern on Friday. Howard scored 63 points over the two halves in just 26 minutes, 21 seconds of action while hitting 13-of-15 from behind the 3-point arc. St. John's suffered its first loss of the season in a 76-74 last-second heartbreaker versus Seton Hall on Saturday after the Pirates capitalized on a controversial call that handed them the ball with 3.9 seconds left and down by one. The Red Storm nearly overcame an off-night from leading scorer Shamorie Ponds (18.7 points per game), who finished with eight points on 2-for-13 shooting but still chipped in with seven assists, six rebounds and five steals.

        TV: 7 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

ABOUT MARQUETTE (11-2): The Golden Eagles scored 24 points off 17 Southern turnovers Friday but only surrendered six points off their own 14 giveaways. While the offense has made headlines, Marquette's defense has been nearly as impressive as the Golden Eagles end non-league play in the top-30 nationally in rebounds per game (41.5), rebound margin (9.0), blocks (63) and field-goal percentage defense (38.7). Outside of Howard, junior Sam Hauser is the only other player averaging double figures in scoring (14.6) while also leading the team in rebounding (6.8).

ABOUT ST. JOHN'S (12-1): The Red Storm received a game-high 19 points from junior Mustapha Heron in the loss to Seton Hall and 16 points each from junior Justin Simon and senior Marvin Clark II. St. John's recorded 12 steals Saturday - the fifth time it has reached double figures this season - and are among the national leaders with a plus-6 turnover margin. Ponds is making his case for Big East Player of the Year as his scoring total (18.7) is fourth best in the conference and he leads the Big East in assists (6.1), assist-to-turnover ratio (3.3-to-1) and steals (2.7).

        TIP-INS

        1. St. John's is 8-0 at home while Marquette has lost its only true road game of the season.

        2. The 12-0 start was St. John's best since 1982-83 when sophomore, and current head coach, Chris Mullin led his team to 14 straight wins to begin the season.

        3. The Big East released a statement Monday confirming an incorrect call was made that led to St. John's losing possession in the final seconds of Saturday's loss.

        PREDICTION: Marquette 83, St. John's 74

Cal St. Fullerton Titans vs. Washington Huskies Preview and Predictions 2019-01-01

NCAAB Predictions 31st December 2018 by Gracenote
          by Gracenote on 12/31/2018

A few hours after the Washington football team wraps up its season with a Rose Bowl showdown against Ohio State, the Huskies basketball team will play its final non-conference tuneup against visiting Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday. It will be the first game in 11 days for Mike Hopkins' squad, which went into the holiday break following a very uneven performance in a 57-41 victory over Sacramento State.

Washington overcame a dreadful first-half offensive performance in the win over the Hornets, falling behind 22-19 after 20 minutes while shooting 0-for-11 from from 3-point range and 33 percent from the field. But the Huskies turned things around after halftime with some stifling defense, holding Sacramento State to just 19 points on 3-of-22 shooting (13.6 percent) and finished the game with a 24-10 edge in points off turnovers. "We've shown great signs," Hopkins said in his postgame press conference. "Great passing, great rebounding, great defense and then we've shown poor defense, poor energy (and) not making the extra pass." Cal State Fullerton comes to Seattle off a 79-64 victory over visiting Portland on Saturday night which snapped a four-game losing streak for the Titans.

          TV: 10 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Network

ABOUT CAL STATE FULLERTON (4-9): The Titans return four starters from a team that won the Big West Tournament and lost to Purdue first round of the NCAA Tournament, including the talented backcourt duo of Kyle Allman Jr. and Khalil Ahmad. Allman Jr. leads the team in scoring (18.8) and had 26 points, including 6-of-8 from 3-point range, in the win over Portland. Ahmad is the only other player averaging in double figures scoring (17.5) while junior forward Jackson Rowe leads the team in rebounds (6.9) and adds 9.7 points per game.

ABOUT WASHINGTON (8-4): Sophomore guard Jaylen Nowell leads the team in scoring (16.8) while also shooting 40.5 percent from 3-point range and has been held below 14 points in just three games this season. Senior forward Noah Dickerson, a returning first team all-Pac-12 selection, is second in scoring (15.3) and also leads the team in rebounding (6.7). Lanky 6-5 senior guard Matisse Thybulle, the reigning Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, is averaging 8.8 points and helped spur the second half comeback against Sacramento State with seven steals.

          TIP-INS

          1. Sacramento State's 41 points were the fewest allowed by the Huskies since they held Grambling to 38 on Dec. 17, 2014.

          2. Thybulle is Washington's career steals leader with 243 and has had at least one theft in 58 consecutive games.

          3. Allman Jr. has scored in double figures in all 12 games he's played in this season and had 38 points in a 80-71 loss at Hofstra on Nov. 21.

PREDICTION: Washington 68, Cal State Fullerton 63

Marquette is a team lots of analysts really like this season, and they might be right. But the team is going to have to prove they can win away from home, and I'm willing to bet against them until they do. The one true road game this season was a train wreck blowout loss at Indiana. St. John's is off its first loss of the season and they were completely hosed by the officials. It looks like the Johnnies might have been considerably underrated. The Red Storm are going to have knock down their outside shots in this game as I see Marquette with an edge on the glass. But the flip side is a huge ball security advantage for the home team. Figures to be close but I'm going to roll with St. John's to pull this one out.
