In the Crease - Week 17
    Joe Williams

    Toothless Ducks
The Anaheim Ducks are fading fast, going 0-8-4 across the past 12 games. Despite the ugly skid they're still just two points behind the Edmonton Oilers for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference with plenty of time to turn things around. In the past they're slide and 47 points through 47 games might be a death knell, but the last few playoff spots in the West this season might go to teams with point totals slightly lower than we've seen in recent seasons. The road trip continues at Minnesota on Thursday, at New Jersey on Saturday and at N.Y. Islanders on Sunday before returning home Wednesday against St. Louis to finish up before the All-Star break. If they don't break the skid then, they'll have to wait all the way until Feb. 2 due to the All-Star break, when they embark on another five-game road trip.

    Calgary...On Fire
The Calgary Flames have fired to the top of the Pacific Division with an 8-1-2 mark across the past 11 outings, although they certainly haven't done it with a lot of attention. The Flames have posted a 15-4-5 mark at home this season, but they're a respectable 15-9-0 in 24 outings away from home to lead the Western Conference in road victories. Their plus-39 goal differential is also good for second in the NHL behind only the Tampa Bay Lightning (plus-58). The Flames face the Detroit Red Wings at home on Friday, and have a quick turnaround in Edmonton on Saturday night. Head coach Bill Peters will also face his former employer, the Carolina Hurricanes, in a pair of games on Tuesday, Jan. 22 in Calgary, and Sunday, Feb. 3 in Raleigh.

    Looking Ahead

    Thursday, Jan. 17

    Toronto-Tampa Bay:
The Maple Leafs hit the road for the Sunshine State stretch against the Lightning and Florida Panthers. The public is investing heavily in the home side despite the fact the Maple Leafs are an impressive 15-6 in the past 21 road games while going 10-1 in their past 11 while playing on two or more days of rest. The Lightning will be playing in their fourth game in six days, and they're 23-6 in the past 29 in the fourth game of a 4-in-6 situation. The public is likely backing the Lightning heavily, either straight-up or on the puck line, because of Toronto's woes in this series recently. The Leafs are 2-8 in their past 10 trips to Tampa, and 1-5 in the past six meetings overall. The 'under' is also 8-3 in the past 11 metings in this series.

    Winnipeg-Nashville:
The Jets roll into the Music City with five victories in the past six games overall, and they're 7-2 in the past nine attempts against a team with a winning overall record. In addition, Winnipeg has posted an 8-3 record across the past 11 on the road. The Predators are equally hot, going 4-0 in their past four against teams with a winning percentage over .600. Total bettors might be slapping the 'over', which is 4-0 in Smashville's past four overall and 5-2 in the past seven against the Western Conference. While the over is 8-1-2 in the past 11 road games by a team with a home winning percentage over .600, the under is 7-3-1 in the past 11 overall and 3-1-1 in the past five against winning teams. The over is 7-3 in the past 10 meetings in Nashville, and the road team has claimed four of the past five.

    Los Angeles-Dallas:
The Kings are Stars are both struggling, so something's gotta give in this one. The Kings are 2-5 in the past seven overall, while they're just 7-19 in the past 26 games away from home. For Dallas, they have dropped four of the past five overall, although they're a solid 11-4 in the past 15 against Pacific Division foes. The Kings are just 1-5 in the past six against the Stars, although the road team is 4-1 in the past five. While the under has been the play for both teams lately, going 8-2 in L.A.'s past 10, and 5-0-1 in the past six for Dallas, the 'over' is 7-3-4 in the past 14 meetings in this series.

    Friday, Jan. 18

    N.Y. Islanders-Washington:
It might be rather overlooked, but the Capitals will welcome Stanley Cup champion head coach Barry Trotz to town on Friday night. It will be his first visit to D.C. since leaving after last season's title, failing to agree to terms on a new deal after the franchise's first championship. Washington greeted him rudely on the Island in the first meeting on Nov. 26, winning 4-1 behind Braden Holtby. He has been on the shelf with an injury, so it's likely Pheonix Copley gets the starting nod. The Capitals are 0-2-1 over Copley's past three starts, getting outscored 13-4 in the process.

    Buffalo-Vancouver:
The Sabres continue their road trip against the Canucks in the Pacific Northwest, and the home side is a slight favorite over the skidding side from Buffalo. The Sabres picked up a much-needed win, and a rather impressive one, in Calgary on Wednesday. Buffalo posted a 4-3 win in overtime thanks to superstar Jack Eichel just 70 seconds into the extra session. Vancouver is looking to bounce back after a 3-2 setback against the Edmonton Oilers in a shootout on Wednesday. They're looking for revenge after losing a 4-3 shootout in Buffalo on Nov. 10 earlier in the season, too. The Canucks are 5-2-2 over their past nine at home.

    Saturday, Jan. 19

    Anaheim-New Jersey:
The Ducks and Devils will drop the puck at 1:00 p.m. ET on Saturday in Newark, or 10:00 a.m. PT, the local clock of the Ducks. It could be a sluggish start for a team not playing all that way lately. Anaheim enters 0-5-2 in their past seven against Eastern Conference teams, last winning in Pittsburgh of all places on Dec. 17 by a 4-2 count. They also were able to beat the Devils in a shootout by a 6-5 count back on Dec. 9, as John Gibson outdueled Cory Schneider. The Ducks lost 5-3 last season in Newark on Dec. 18, and they haven't won in New Jersey since Dec. 19, 2015.

    Philadelphia-Montreal:
The Flyers and Canadiens do battle for the first time this season, and they're set to meet three times between now and March 19. Philly might be showing signs of snapping out of their funk, winning back-to-back games Monday and Wednesday. It's the first time the Fly Guys had consecutive wins in regulation since Dec. 18-20. Their season high, accomplished once, was a three-game run from Nov. 5-10, sweeping a home-and-home with Arizona before blanking Chicago. All-Star goaltender Carey Price is back, posting a solid 18-13-4 mark with a 2.65 goals-against average and .912 save percentage as of Thursday AM. He also has three shutouts to his credit.

    Pittsburgh-Vegas:
The Golden Knights welcome the Penguins to town, and Marc-Andre Fleury will likely be in the crease for this one. Malcolm Subban started the first meeting the Steel City back on Oct. 11, as the Pens posted a 4-2 victory behind Casey DeSmith. Matt Murray will likely be holding down the fort in this one. In the only previous meeting in Sin City last season, Fleury bested Murray, his former understudy, by a 2-1 margin on Dec. 14, 2017. The 'under' is 7-2-1 across the past 10 outings heading into Saturday's showdown. On the flip side, the Pens have a 4-0 'over' mark across their past four road games heading into Friday's battle in Arizona. They have the difficult task of back-to-back desert games, while Vegas enters well rested and off since Tuesday.

Underdogs went a perfect 5-0 on the moneyline in the NHL last night - profiting $695 overall for $100 bettors.

        Season to date:
        Dogs: 300-412
        Home Dogs: 99-124
        Road Dogs: 201-288

NCAA-B | College of Charleston vs Northeastern
Play on: College of Charleston +4 -107 at betonline

The College of Charleston is probably the best team in the CAA, but Northeastern has one of the oddest homecourt advantages in Mathews Arena. It's a giant cavernous hockey rank that they use for basketball. Northeastern is a really hot and cold team who has already lost at home to Delaware and Boston U. They are led by Vasa Pusica who is a really good point guard. Jordan Roland is a nice complementary piece as well. Charleston has road wins at Towson, UNC Wilmington, Siena, VCU and Western Carolina. They have lost two of their last three, but I trust a team that puts Grant Riller and Jarrell Brantley out there on a nightly basis. Last year, these two teams played three times with the Cougars winning all three including the road tilt once again as a four point dog. Charleston has plenty of talent and I think they are a live dog in this one.

Play on: Pacers -2½ -109 at GTBets

We are always looking for spots to fade the Sixers on the road, where they have been a money burner this season. This team is 8-14 ATS on the road this season, and we think they are getting too much credit from the oddsmakers tonight. Indiana has been the better team overall and they are nearly unbeatable at home. They won by double digits just last month in Philly, so we know they matchup up well here. In fact, they have covered in five of the last seven matchups. We think there is a good chance that they get a comfortable 7+-point win tonight.

                NHL | Blackhawks vs Rangers
Play on: Blackhawks +108 at betonline

ASA PLAY ON Free Pick: Chicago at NY Rangers, Thursday @ 7:05 PM ET

The Blackhawks are off an embarrassing 8-5 loss at New Jersey. The last 3 times that Chicago has lost a game by a margin of 3 or more goals they have won their next game very single time. The Rangers are off a huge 6-2 win versus Carolina. New York is 0-3 the last 3 times they were off a win by a margin of 2 or more goals. You can see why, even though Chicago has been struggling, they're offering solid underdog line value in this spot given the situation. Also, New York had lost 17 of their 23 games prior to the win over the Hurricanes. The Blackhawks also have won each of the last 3 meetings with the Rangers and we look for another dominating win here as each of the 3 prior Chicago victories in this series have come by a 3-goal margin. Free Pick: Chicago Blackhawks in early evening action Thursday.

Play on: Rangers -120 at pinnacle

This classic Original Six matchup has seen better days. If the playoffs were to start today, neither team would be involved. The Rangers are a lot closer though and the teams are currently going in opposite directions. The Rangers are off a 6-2 win, their second victory in three games. As for the Hawks, the reality is that they have a better chance of winning the draft lottery than making the playoffs. This is a Chicago team which allows more goals than any team in its conference; last time the Hawks allowed eight, their fourth straight loss. While the Hawks are 8-16 on the road, the Rangers are 12-11 at MSG. Really, the price could easily be higher. Consider NY.

10* FREE NBA PICK (Hornets -3)
I'll take my chances here with Charlotte as a small home dog. I want to start off by saying I really like this Kings team and have been on them a lot here of late. However, I think the fact that Sacramento has won 4 of 5 and are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 has them getting a little too much love on the road.
Charlotte has not been playing great basketball. The Hornets are just 6-10 in their last 16, but come in off a 108-93 upset win at the Spurs, where the players rallied around veteran Tony Parker, who was playing his first game back in San Antonio since leaving the team. I think that's something they can carry over into this game and there's extra motivation here with revenge. Hornets just lost at the Kings on Saturday.
Hornets are 10-2 ATS at home when they go into the contest having lost 2 of their last 3, while the Kings are just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 vs a team with a winning home record. (Charlotte is 14-8 at home compared to 6-15 on the road). Give me the Hornets -3!

This looks like a more than reasonable price on the red hot New York Islanders who have won nine of their last 11 overall.
Here they'll host a New Jersey side that has lost four of its last six and is in a tough spot playing its fourth game in six nights (0-5 in its last five in the fourth game of a 4-in-6 situation).
The Islanders have won nine of the last 10 meetings in their building, and that's a trend more than likely to continue here Thursday night.

My money is on the Blue Raiders to cash in easy cover here at home against the Roadrunners. Middle Tennessee comes in having lost 13 straight and UTSA enters having won 7 straight and have not failed to cover since November (8-0-1). The fact that the Roadrunners are such a small road favorite makes this an easy play on the other side. UTSA has struggled coming off a close win, as they just beat North Texas 76-74 at home. Roadrunners are 0-7 ATS in their last 7 road games off a win by 6 or less. Bet Middle Tennessee +3.5!

Jack’s Free Pick Thursday: Michigan State -1.5
Michigan State has been underrated for much of the season. They sit at 15-2 and have gone 13-4 ATS to show how underrated they’ve been. Their only losses came to Kansas on a neutral in the opener and at Louisville in OT, and that loss to Louisville doesn’t look as bad now after Louisville just waxed UNC by 21 on the road.
The Spartans have since gone 9-0 SU & 8-1 ATS in their last 9 games overall. They are 6-0 SU & 6-0 ATS in Big Ten play with their six wins coming by nearly 17 points per game. The Spartans have now won 18 straight regular season conference games. Nebraska has won 20 straight at home, so something has to give, and I believe it’s the Huskers’ streak.
Third-leading scorer Joshua Langford, who averages 15 PPG, has missed the past four games with an ankle injury. He is expected to return soon. The Spartans have a great point guard/big man duo with Cassius Winston and Nick Ward. Winston averages 17.6 PPG & 7.4 APG and is one of the best guards in the country. Ward is tough to tame inside as he averages 16.6 PPG on 65.4% shooting.
Michigan State has absolutely owned Nebraska over the past few seasons. The Spartans are 3-0 SU & 3-0 ATS in their last three meetings with their three wins coming by an average of 18.7 points per game. That includes their 72-61 win in their last trip to Nebraska as nearly identical 2-point favorites.
The Spartans are 8-0 ATS in their last eight games vs. a team with a winning % above .600. Michigan State is 14-3 ATS vs. good defensive team that allow 39% or less over the last three seasons. The Spartans are 9-1 ATS off a win by 15 points or more this season. Bet Michigan State Thursday.
