This weekend's NCAA basketball odds and analysis

Virginia has gone an incredible 9-2-1 ATS in its past 12 visits to Cameron Indoor and are 13-3 ATS this season, including the last seven in a row.

Can Xavier turn around what has been a disappointing season to date? History suggests that it won't happen Friday night as the Musketeers bring an ugly cover record into their Big East encounter with Villanova. That matchup kicks off an action-packed weekend of college basketball, including a marquee showdown between Virginia and Duke, and Gonzaga looking to make a statement against a Portland team that has been surprisingly competitive against the Bulldogs. Here are the top matchups, tips and betting trends to monitor heading into this weekend's NCAA hoops schedule:

No Quarter From 'Nova

Oddsmakers traditionally see games between Xavier and Villanova as competitive matchups – but that hasn't been the case in recent years as the Big East rivals renew acquaintances Friday night in Pennsylvania. The visiting Musketeers have been a rough cover option already this season at 6-10-1 and face the unenviable task of turning around a trend that has seen them convert just one cover in their previous 11 meetings with the Wildcats. And Villanova has dominated in recent meetings, winning the past four by at least 16 points despite being a single-digit favorite in all of them. The Wildcats are -10 for Friday's game.

Coming Up Cavaliers

The biggest game of the weekend takes place at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C., as Zion Williamson and the Duke Blue Devils face off against the defensive juggernaut that is the Virginia Cavaliers. And if history is any indication, the Cavs are going to be an incredibly popular choice in this one. Virginia has gone an incredible 9-2-1 ATS in its past 12 visits to Duke, including a 65-63 straight-up victory last Jan. 27. In addition, the road team has gone 20-6-1 ATS in the previous 27 head-to-head meetings, while the underdog has covered in the past six encounters.

Pilots Flying vs. Zags

Gonzaga is one a red-hot cover streak coming into Saturday's West Coast Conference encounter with Portland – but the Pilots are ready to put an end to that Bulldogs run, while reversing their own dismal cover streak in the process. Portland has gone 0-7 ATS in its past seven conference games and might appear hard-pressed to change its fortunes against a Gonzaga side that is 7-1 ATS in its last eight games. But the Pilots are 7-3-1 ATS in their previous 11 games against the Bulldogs – and with the teams going an incredible 6-1 O/U in their past seven meetings, the Portland ATS/Over double has plenty of potential here.

Flipping the Script

Games between Florida State and Boston College used to be automatic under plays – but things have changed dramatically for the ACC opponents as they square off Sunday afternoon at Silvio Conte Forum. The host Eagles are just 3-8-1 ATS in their previous 12 meetings with the Seminoles, but the teams have surpassed oddsmakers' expectations from an offensive standpoint with a 7-2 O/U mark in their past nine meetings. And the only two under results in that span finished below the total by two (2015) and five points (2016), respectively. This comes after the teams reeled off six consecutive Unders between 2007 and 2011.

Team News

Duke will likely be without first-year point guard Tre Jones for Saturday's big-time showdown with Virginia. Jones suffered a sprained AC joint earlier this week and, while he isn't expected to miss as much time as first thought, he's considered doubtful to dress against the Cavaliers. Jones is averaging 8.1 points and a team-best 5.7 assists per game.

Michigan state shooting guard Josh Langford's strange injury situation hasn't abated, with the Spartans still not sure when he'll return to action. Langford has missed the past two weeks with a foot injury, and one seems quite sure how it happened. But Michigan State (16-2, 7-0) is rolling along even without its 15-point-per-game scorer, sitting at +1,800 to win the national title.

Mid-Major to Watch: Wofford Terriers

Ruff! That's how opposing defenses have had it when facing the Terriers (14-4, 6-0 Southern), who rank third in the mid-major pecking order behind Gonzaga and Buffalo. The Terriers have done most of their damage on the offensive end, coming into the weekend averaging 83.1 points per game – good for 25th in the country. They're also one of only 24 teams in the nation shooting at least 49 percent from the field. Yet despite this, Wofford has gone just 8-7 ATS and 8-7 O/U.

One impressive thing to note about Wofford: Three of its four defeats on the season have come against nationally ranked teams (North Carolina, Kansas, Mississippi State), while the fourth came vs. Oklahoma. And of those four losses, only one came by more than 11 points. They've laid waste to the competition the rest of the time, boasting a +18.7-scoring margin that ranks seventh in the country, even with Michigan State and ahead of programs like North Carolina and Kentucky.

National Title Odds Update

Duke has seen its national championship odds come back to earth over the past week or so, dipping to +225 – but the Blue Devils are still the consensus choice among Vegas oddsmakers to win the NCAA title. Michigan sits second at +900, followed by Gonzaga (+1,000) and Virginia (+1,100). And as for Wofford? The Terriers are a whopping +30,000 to do the improbable.

Betting Trends

Road favorites have been a strong play over the previous seven days, putting together a 73-28 SU mark (72.3 percent success rate) that actually outperformed home faves over the same stretch (145-65, 69.1 percent). That puts road faves at 67.7 percent for the season, while home faves are coming through 79.9 percent of the time to date.

Under has been the prevailing total trend in non-overtime games in the past week, with 52.5 percent of those contests coming in below the number. But with 15 of the 17 games that went to extra time going above the total, the overall tally is much closer (158 Unders, 156 overs). Non-OT contests have produced an under 53.5 percent of the time this season.

Tennessee-Martin owns the mantel of spread bettors' worst enemy, bringing a 2-12 ATS mark into weekend action. And while the Skyhawks came close twice earlier this month – losing consecutive overtime games by five points in games where they were +3 and +3.5, respectively – they were less impressive in their last two non-covers, losing by 21 at +12.5 and falling by 24 at +6.5

Game of the Night - Golden State (-6, 241.5) at L.A. Clippers, 10:35 ET

It’s finally time to Boogie.

The Warriors as we’ve come to know them are over, leaving the floor victorious over the Pelicans on Wednesday night. Golden State won 147-140, surpassing the 140-point mark for the third time in four games after they had eclipsed it just twice in the previous 41.

The defending champs have turned up their level in the season’s second half, but the group that has won two titles after inviting Kevin Durant into the fold to reinvent themselves after blowing a 3-1 deficit in the 2016 NBA Finals may never be the same again.

There’s a chance that Durant re-signs and the team that closed Thursday with the Western Conference’s top record will be seen again in San Francisco when the Chase Center opens in October, because DeMarcus Cousins won’t be there unless he comes out of the opposing locker room.

On Friday night, Cousins will be introduced with Warriors’ first five, debuting after surprisingly signing a one-year deal this past offseason. He’s replacing Kevon Looney at center, giving Golden State five All-Star starters with 25 combined appearances between them.

We’ll see how quickly Steve Kerr gets all the pieces to gel, but two things are probable. For starters, there will be growing pains. It may not happen tonight, but over the next few months, there will be rough spots. Expect a losing streak or two. It won’t help that Friday’s visit to Staples opens a stretch of 11 of 16 on the road between now and March 2, but the goal for Golden State is to hit the ground running in April with everyone feeling comfortable on both sides of the ball.

The other likelihood is that once they do click, people are going to scream about how awful the NBA is thanks to a superteam becoming invincible. Barring injury, Cousins’ ability to score in the post is going to make the game easier for elite shooters Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Durant.

All the nonsense about the Warriors looking vulnerable and no longer putting fear into teams has been squashed by this week’s efforts, which include a 143-111 demolition of the Nuggets in Denver to wrestle away the best record in the Western Conference on Tuesday. Curry’s shooting helped Golden State erase a 17-point deficit against the Pelicans as he finished with 41 points while Durant added 30 points and 15 boards and Looney played his role well with 12 boards and team-highs in blocks and steals with two apiece.

Cousins is expected to be on his best behavior after signing for the mid-level exception, taking a one-year pay cut to earn $5.3 million and show that his ruptured Achilles tendon is fully healed while playing for a championship contender for the first time. The Warriors employ Draymond Green, so they’re not expecting Cousins to be a model citizen, but it would help if he’s able to control his temper and show he’s an exemplary teammate.

This next chapter has yet to be written, but it will be fresh and new. Close the books on these Warriors as we’ve known them. This Cousins-infused version figures to be quite the adventure.

To pick up some tips on how to integrate him, Kerr watched Pelicans’ film from last season to see how he blended in with Anthony Davis, Jrue Holiday and Rajon Rondo last season in addition to tape of what he’s done in previous partnerships with Curry, Thompson and Durant with USA Basketball at the 2014 FIBAs and the 2016 Olympics. He’s been working with the Warriors in five-on-five drills for weeks and won’t be totally lost out there, but it would be surprising if the offense remains as efficient as it has over the past week. Then again, if Curry can extend his streak of hitting at least nine 3-pointers to four games, there’s no reason they have to bog down. Golden State has hit an average of 18.6 3-pointers on their current six-game win streak.

The Clippers will likely start Marcin Gortat since Doc Rivers is unlikely to employ 7-foot-3 Boban Marjanovic against the Warriors due to his inability to defend pick-and-rolls, but he can turn to him if he wants to try and throw the kitchen sink at Cousins and make him contend with a physical force of nature who draws fouls well.

It remains to be seen whether Cousins is on any type of minutes restriction since Kerr hasn’t divulged much other than his plans to start him, so there’s a possibility we may just see him at the start of both halves and a group with more reps that would include Looney would be on the floor If the game is tight down the stretch.

Over the past nine games, a stretch beginning on Dec. 29 in which Golden State has gone 8-1, it has averaged 131.6 points per game. The ‘over’ is 8-1 in those games. Conversely, the ‘under’ is 6-2 in the last eight Clippers’ games as they’ve averaged just 105.3 points during their current four-game losing streak.

L.A. has played the Warriors tough in each of the first two meetings this season, winning at home 121-116 in overtime back on Nov. 12 as a 3.5-point underdog and covering in Oakland on Dec. 23 as an 11-point ‘dog in a 129-127 loss. Tobias Harris scored 32 in the loss, while Curry led everyone with 42 points. He didn’t play in the first meeting at Staples, which ended in that infamous bickering incident between Green and Durant at the end of regulation.

The ‘over’ hit in both games so its not too surprising to see this total open above 240, making it the largest involving L.A. this season. This will be the sixth game with a total at 240 or higher involving the Warriors. The ‘over’ is 3-2 in those games. Golden State leads the NBA with 118.6 points per game while the Clippers rank fifth, averaging 115.2.

New Orleans only topped 130 points in two of the 48 contests that Cousins appeared in last season. The Pelicans were on a season-high four-game winning streak when he was injured on Jan. 26, having registered a triple-double in a home upset of the Rockets. Nearly a full year later, he’ll take the floor looking to turn the best basketball team on the planet into the most impressive one ever assembled. Just don’t expect to see it happen overnight.

Best of the Rest

Memphis at Boston, 7:05 p.m. ET:Memphis center Marc Gasol temporarily lost feeling in his hand earlier this week after being hit on his elbow earlier this week and has been playing hurt most of the past few months. Point guard Mike Conley is gutting it out too and small forward Kyle Anderson is out a few weeks after an ankle sprain, so the Celtics have a great chance of utilizing their depth to wear down the visiting Grizzlies. Boston is looking to win consecutive games after snapping a three-game losing streak with an impressive 117-108 comeback win over Toronto on Wednesday. Brad Stevens has some chemistry issues within his group to iron out as he looks to keep everybody happy with minutes and touches, but his team has responded extremely well at home, winning their last seven games at TD Garden. The Celtics beat the Grizzlies 112-103 on Dec. 29 at FedEx Forum, getting 26 points and 13 assists from Kyrie Irving. Boston shot 50 percent against one of the NBA’s top defensive teams and will look for the sweep of the Griz for the third straight season, owning a six-game winning streak in this series.

Miami at Detroit, 7:05 p.m. ET: After a strong start, the Pistons are on the outside looking in as far as the Eastern Conference playoff picture is concerned, having fallen out of the top-eight by going 6-17 since Dec. 3. They haven’t come away with victories consecutive games since extending a winning streak to five with an upset of the Warriors on Dec. 1 but will be looking to end that run after posting a 120-115 comeback win over Orlando on Wednesday. The Heat come off their worst loss of the season after losing in Milwaukee 124-86 on Tuesday and will be continuing a four-game road trip that continues in Chicago on Saturday as Dwyane Wade faces his hometown team for the final time. Miami beat Detroit 120-115 on Nov. 5 behind Josh Richardson’s 27 points. Goran Dragic remains out, while fellow point guard Tyler Johnson, who has been starting, is dealing with an illness. Detroit just got its roster fully healthy with backup point guard Ish Smith and second-team center Zaza Pachulia getting back on the floor.

San Antonio at Minnesota, 8:05 p.m. ET: There were a lot of great vibes blown up in Philadelphia on Monday night as far as the Timberwolves are concerned. Ryan Saunders’ early success as interim head coach featured a road upset of OKC and an emotional home win over the Pelicans, but Jimmy Butler and the 76ers absolutely destroyed Minnesota 149-107, again bringing questions about the team’s toughness to the forefront. Point guard Jeff Teague says the T’Wolves can’t afford to be a “pretty team” and must be tougher, so it will be interesting to see what fight they display against the veteran Spurs. San Antonio has won two of three meetings between these teams, including the season opener (112-108) and the most recent meeting back on Dec. 21 by a 124-98 count. Bryn Forbes led the Spurs with 22 points as they shot 57.6 percent from 3-point range and racked up 36 assists. The ‘over’ has connected in 13 of the last 15 Minnesota games and in all three Wolves-Spurs matchups this season. Starting forward Robert Covington and backup point Tyus Jones are out with ankle injuries, but guards Teague and Derrick Rose rejoined the lineup.

New Orleans at Portland, 10:35 p.m. ET: Anthony Davis didn’t play when the Pelicans fell in Portland 109-95 on Nov. 3, so he’ll be looking to help his team bounce back from a tough loss suffered in Oakland. Davis briefly left the floor after hurting himself in the fourth quarter but was on the floor in the final minute and doesn’t appear on the injury report. Nikola Mirotic, who had been operating under a minutes restriction, scored 29 points in looking like he’s back up to speed against the Dubs, giving the Pels an extremely productive frontcourt rotation that also features Julius Randle. Point guard Elfrid Payton is also back, so we’ll see if New Orleans can go on a run and keep the rumor mill regarding Davis’ future from swirling and picking up intensity as we head towards the trade deadline. The Blazers routed the Cavs at home on Wednesday as Damian Lillard shook off a hand injury to lead the charge and snap a two-game losing streak. Small forward Maurice Harkless has been and out of the lineup with a knee injury and is questionable tonight. Jake Layman would start again if Harkless is out.

Vucevic has logged 20 or more points in six of the Magic’s last 10 games and has 29 double-doubles on the season through 43 starts. Look for him to take advantage of the matchup and back Over his points, rebounds, assists total.


Shut down defense

The Cavaliers have just one win in their last 14 games and have only won away from home four times this season. Today, they take on a Jazz team who have won eight of the last nine home games versus the Cavs and are coming in hot, winners of five straight.

The Jazz have held opponents to 101.7 points on 42.1 percent shooting over their last three. They should have no problems slowing down a Cleveland team averaging only 102.1 points a game on the road this season. Take Under the Cavaliers team total of 100.5.


Matching up well

The Pistons are 2-point favorites despite losing seven of their last 10 games. Today, they host a Miami Heat team once again without Goran Dragic but might also be without Wayne Ellington and Josh Richardson as well. Both are listed as questionable for today's matchup with an illness.

Battle of Alberta highlights this weekend's NHL odds and analysis

The Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers are well apart in the standings, but it's been a long time since the Flames tasted victory in enemy territory. The latest chapter in the Battle of Alberta highlights this weekend's NHL slate, which includes a Vegas Golden Knights team looking to improve its puck luck against Pittsburgh, and the Arizona Coyotes looking to continue a bizarre trend in Toronto. Here are the top matchups and betting trends to monitor as we enter a fun-filled weekend on NHL ice:

Who Needs Rest?

Certainly not the surprising New York Islanders, who will face the host Washington Capitals on Friday – one night after cruising to a 4-1 win over the New Jersey Devils at Barclays Center. The Islanders have been the best team in the NHL this season when it comes to playing on the tail end of a back-to-back, having gone 6-0 SU entering Friday night's showdown with the Capitals. And it gets better: The Islanders have outscored the opposition by a combined score of 25-6 in those games despite surrendering 35.5 shots per game in that span and being outshot by an average of nine shots per contest.
Advantage: Oilers

The Calgary Flames are one of only three teams to have reached the 30-win plateau to date – but none of those victories have come in Edmonton. The Flames make the trip up Highway 2 this Saturday night having lost six consecutive games at Rogers Place dating back to the 2015-16 season. And the Oilers have put together some of their best defensive efforts of the past few years in those home encounters with the Flames, having limited Calgary to one or fewer goals in four of those six contests. The road team hasn't scored in the third period in four consecutive meetings between the teams.

Unlucky in Vegas

An incredible hot streak has made the Vegas Golden Knights a virtual lock to finish in the top-3 in the Pacific Division – but goals have been hard to come by so far this month, at least compared to the number of shots taken. The Golden Knights enter Saturday's showdown with the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins having racked up a league-high 37.1 shots per game so far in January, but they've managed just 2.71 goals per game for the month, a rate that ranks 21st out of 31 teams. Pittsburgh hasn't been nearly as unlucky, having averaged 4.29 goals in January despite ranking ninth with an average of 31.9 shots per outing.

Home Ice Disadvantage

Sunday night should hold special meaning to Toronto forward Auston Matthews as his Maple Leafs entertain his hometown team, the Arizona Coyotes. The visiting side is on a tear in the head-to-head series, having won four consecutive meetings and seven of the previous nine. And recent meetings haven't been all that close, with the last three encounters decided by three goals. As for bettors considering a player prop play on Matthews, he hasn't faced his native franchise all that often but has been mostly effective, with two goals and an assist in four career games vs. the Coyotes.

Goalie Profile

Semyon Varlamov, Colorado Avalanche: It has been a trying eight days for Varlamov, who has been torched for 16 goals over his previous four games to extend what has been a concerning stretch of subpar goaltending for the Avalanche. Colorado netminders Varlamov, Philipp Grubauer and Pavel Francouz have combined to past an .830 save percentage in January, the worst in the league over that span. And those struggles have spoiled a strong offensive showing by the Avalanche, who are averaging 3.57 goals in January but have just two wins to show for it. On the plus side, Colorado's 26 over conversions are the most of any Central Division team.

Injury Update

Ryan Kesler and Jakob Silfverberg, Anaheim Ducks: Even after ending a 12-game losing skid Thursday night in Minnesota, there's more bad news in Anaheim. The struggling Ducks will be without forwards Ryan Kesler and Jakob Silfverberg indefinitely as both players nurse lower-body injuries. It has been a dismal season for Kesler, who has just four goals, two assists and a minus-15 rating in 44 games with Anaheim this season; Silfverberg has been slightly better with 12 goals and seven assists in 42 games. Anaheim has been one of the most injury-riddled teams in the league, and it shows: The Ducks are at -5.66 units won on the season, good for 21st overall.

Hat Trick Trends

The tide has finally turned on road favorites following an incredibly lucrative month. Teams favored away from their home arenas have gone a dismal 4-9 SU over the past seven days, good for a 30.8-percent success rate. Home favorites have also cashed in less often than expected over that stretch, winning SU just 57.1 percent of the time (20-11-4).

Bettors looking for a totals edge didn't find one this past week. The Overs and Unders have been split right down the middle over the previous seven days, with each outcome converting 24 times. The under is still king over the past 30 days, converting at a 53.9 percent clip, while the season to date has seen 349 under results compared to 343 overs.

While totals play was a 50-50 proposition this past week, one NHL official remains a terrific Under option. Graham Skilliter has provided plenty of profit for under bettors, with his games having gone 14-25 O/U to date; his -12.84 over units won are the lowest in the NHL. Teams are averaging just 5.48 total goals in the games he has worked.
