8-Unit Play. Take #808 Weber State (-9) over Sacramento State (9 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 2)
If you've follow the Big Sky Conference at all - and few do - you know that this is a league of haves and have-nots. This year there are three decent teams - Montana, Northern Colorado and Weber State - and then a bunch of dregs. This league has 11 teams. Six of them are ranked No. 289 or worse. Six of them are rated No. 260 or worse in offensive efficiency. Six of them are rated No. 288 in defensive efficiency or worse. These are bad basketball teams. And Sacramento State is one of them. The Hornets are 9-9 on the season. That seems respectable. Until you notice that three of their wins have come against D-II schools and since Dec. 2 - two full months - three more wins have come against teams rated No. 306 or worse. They have also lost three games to teams rated 310 or worse. They are awful. Weber State is not. This team lacks depth. But they might have the best starting five in the league, including one of the Big Sky's best players in Jerrick Harding. They also have one of the league's best big men, Zach Braxton, and in this game they have four of the five best players on the floor. The Wildcats start two guys that are 6-9 and have to more guys 6-8 or taller in their rotation. Sacramento State has one player taller than 6-7, and that would be 6-8 foul machine Josh Patton. Patton has foul issues. And if he gets into trouble in this game against Weber's solid frontcourt then this game is going to be over quickly. Sacramento State is No. 318 in the country in 3-point shooting and No. 319 in free throw shooting. They are one of the worst shooting teams in the country. Weber State, on the other hand, is No. 32 in scoring (81.8 points per game), No. 26 in field goal shooting, No. 86 in 3-pointers and No. 50 in free throws. This team can score and they can score a variety of ways. Weber State is also in the Top 100 in field goal defense and 3-point defense so it is not as if they are a one-trick pony.
The Wildcats are also going to be very motivated for this game. They are coming off back-to-back losses. They are not going to lose three in a row. And on their home court they are not going to take it easy on an overmatched opponent. Sacramento State has played three Top 15 teams this year. They have lost by 15, by 16 and by 31 points. The 31-point loss was at Montana, a team that is basically equal to Weber State. Over their last nine non-overtime games (against D-I opponents), Sacramento State has averaged 64.7 points per game. Weber State averaged 81.8. Sacramento State won't be able to keep up. Weber State has blown out a bunch of bad teams at home this year. And I think they have the capability to do it here as well.
