Carolina Hurricanes vs. Pittsburgh Penguins Preview and Predictions 2019-02-05

NHL Predictions 4th February 2019 by Gracenote
    by Gracenote on 02/04/2019

The streaky Pittsburgh Penguins answered a scintillating 10-1-0 run with losses in five of their last eight games, but a visit from the Carolina Hurricanes might provide just the impetus to get the team back on track. The Penguins bid for their 11th win in 13 outings against the Hurricanes on Tuesday when the Metropolitan Division rivals meet at PPG Paints Arena.

Captain Sidney Crosby scored a goal for the seventh time in seven outings during Saturday's 3-2 setback to Toronto to give him 13 of his team-leading 61 points in that stretch. The two-time Hart Trophy recipient had his way with Carolina in the first encounter, collecting a goal and two assists in Pittsburgh's 3-0 win on Dec. 22. The Hurricanes saw their four-game point streak (3-0-1) halted by some very familiar faces in Sunday's 4-3 setback versus Calgary, with former teammates Derek Ryan, Elias Lindholm and Noah Hanifin having a hand in all four of the Flames' goals in front of ex-Carolina bench boss Bill Peters. "I don't care. I'm just trying to win," former Flames defenseman Dougie Hamilton said about scoring against his former team.

    TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Carolinas, AT&T SportsNet-Pittsburgh

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (25-21-6): Sebastian Aho scored in his fourth straight contest to extend both his team leading total in tallies (24) and points (60) as well as his point streak to five games (four goals, four assists). Fellow Finn Teuvo Teravainen continues to pay dividends on the five-year, $27 million contract extension he signed last month by recording his fourth multi-point performance in his last nine games on Sunday. The 24-year-old Teravainen scored and set up a goal against Calgary to boost his point total to 11 (two goals, nine assists) in that stretch.

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (28-18-6): Jake Guentzel (team-leading 26 goals) scored twice against Carolina in December to give him four goals and six points in his last three contests of the series. Fellow forward Phil Kessel has one goal and three assists in that three-game stretch to give him 15 points (five goals, 10 assists) versus the Hurricanes since he joined Pittsburgh. Matt Murray turned aside all 39 shots he faced in the first meeting against Carolina to improve to 6-2-0 with a 1.73 goals-against average and .946 save percentage in his career versus the club.

    OVERTIME

    1. Pittsburgh C Evgeni Malkin, who has missed the last two games with a reported hand injury, skated away from the team during Monday's practice.

    2. Hurricanes G Petr Mrazek owns a 2-5-1 mark with a 3.93 goals-against average and .886 save percentage in eight career encounters versus Penguins.

    3. Pittsburgh has yielded two goals or fewer in 11 of the last 12 meetings with Carolina.

    PREDICTION: Penguins 4, Hurricanes 2

Los Angeles Kings vs. New Jersey Devils Preview and Predictions 2019-02-05

Kings vs. Devils Preview and Predictions

      by Gracenote on 02/04/2019

Two teams at or near the bottom of their respective conferences face off Tuesday as the New Jersey Devils begin a season high-tying, four-game homestand when they take on the Los Angeles Kings. The Devils have recorded 13 of their 20 victories this campaign at home but have dropped their last two at Prudential Center.

New Jersey, which is four points ahead of last-place Ottawa in the Eastern Conference, is coming off a 3-2 overtime triumph in Montreal on Saturday. Nico Hischier forged a tie in the third period and scored 1:56 into the extra session to complete his second two-goal performance of 2018-19 and second straight two-point effort. The Kings, who reside in the basement in the West, are 1-1-0 on their six-game East Coast trip after rallying for a 4-3 overtime win over the New York Rangers on Monday. Tyler Toffoli set up Adrian Kempe's second goal of the game with one minute remaining in the third period before tallying 25 seconds into the extra session as Los Angeles pulled within three points of 14th-place Chicago in the conference and eight of Vancouver for the second wild-card spot.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS West (Los Angeles), MSG Plus (New Jersey)

ABOUT THE KINGS (21-27-4): Kempe finished with three points in Monday's victory after being kept off the scoresheet in each of his previous four contests. The two-goal effort ended the 22-year-old Swede's drought at 19 games. Los Angeles could be without Jeff Carter, who is three points shy of 700 for his career, as the veteran sniper missed the third period against the Rangers due to a lower-body injury.

ABOUT THE DEVILS (20-24-7): Keith Kinkaid figures to be back in the crease after serving as the backup against the Canadiens, as he has had Los Angeles' number during his career. The 29-year-old goaltender is 4-0-0 with two shutouts, a 0.85 goals-against average and a .970 save percentage in five appearances (four starts) against the Kings - allowing a total of four goals - including three in a road victory on Dec. 6. Kyle Palmieri, who tallied twice in that win at Los Angeles, leads the team with 23 goals and needs one to match his total in 62 games last season.

      OVERTIME

      1. Both of Hischier's game-winning goals this season have come in overtime.

      2. Los Angeles captain C Anze Kopitar has tallied in three consecutive contests and collected six points during his four-game streak.

      3. New Jersey C Travis Zajac (lower body) missed Saturday's contest and is day-to-day.

      PREDICTION: Devils 3, Kings 1

Vancouver Canucks vs. Washington Capitals Preview and Predictions 2019-02-05

NHL Predictions 5th February 2019 by Gracenote
        by Gracenote on 02/05/2019

The Washington Capitals failed to build off a big victory after the long break and look to begin putting a baffling slump behind them when they host the improving Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday. The Capitals came out of the NHLPA-mandated bye week/All-Star break to post a 4-3 win over Western Conference-leading Calgary on Friday before giving up 39 shots in a 1-0 loss to Boston two days later, falling to 1-6-2 in their last nine games.

"We started to play our game in the last period, and that's not enough," Washington defenseman Michal Kempny told reporters after his team was outshot 30-13 over the first 40 minutes. "It's as simple as that. Obviously, it's a very tough loss. We have to be better." The Capitals still are tied for second place in the Metropolitan Division and four points out of first despite their struggles as they prepare to take on a Vancouver team that occupies the second wild-card spot in the West. The Canucks recorded points in six of seven games before hitting a speed bump Monday with a 2-1 loss at Philadelphia despite registering 42 shots. Vancouver managed only an unassisted goal from Brock Boeser and lost veteran defenseman Alex Edler, who needed to be carted off when his face hit the ice hard after his stick got tangled in Flyers forward Jacob Voracek's skate late in the contest.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, Sportsnet One, Sportsnet East, Sportsnet Ontario, Sportsnet Pacific (Vancouver), NBCS Washington

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (24-23-6): Calder Trophy frontrunner Elias Pettersson also left the game in Philadelphia, but the 20-year-old center - who leads the team with 23 goals and 46 points - returned later in the contest. Bo Horvat has notched five of his 42 points in the last five contests and Boeser tied the 23-year-old center with his 18th tally on Monday, extending his point streak to five games (three goals, four assists). Coach Travis Green told reporters that Sven Baertschi (eight goals in 22 games) did not feel well when he woke up Sunday in Colorado and may return to Vancouver, but it is not a concussion issue.

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (28-18-6): Washington entered the week first in the league with 191 minor penalties while sitting 24th in penalty-killing at 77.9 percent. "I think as you get past the All-Star break and you start making a push toward the playoffs, that's an area we have to get better in, as we've taken far too many minor penalties with our sticks," first-year coach Todd Reirden told reporters. "We have to be more disciplined if we're going to have success moving forward." Captain Alex Ovechkin has scored four his league-leading 37 goals in his last three games and tops the team with 57 points - five more than Nicklas Backstrom, who has collected 39 assists.

        OVERTIME

        1. Washington C Lars Eller (lower body) sat out Sunday's contest and is questionable to face the Canucks.

        2. Vancouver RW Jake Virtanen already has recorded a career-high 12 goals but has managed just one over his last 15 games.

        3. The Capitals have won six of the previous seven meetings, including a 5-2 win in Vancouver on Oct. 22 in which Ovechkin scored twice.

        PREDICTION: Capitals 4, Canucks 2

Minnesota Wild vs. Buffalo Sabres Preview and Predictions 2019-02-05

NHL Predictions 4th February 2019 by Gracenote
          by Gracenote on 02/04/2019

Hoping to use a seven-game homestand as a springboard to climb back into playoff contention, the Buffalo Sabres instead found themselves trying to regroup from another ugly loss. After being manhandled in a 7-3 setback to the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday night, Buffalo will hope for better success against another Central Division foe when it hosts the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday night.

The Sabres have lost their way since ripping off 10 straight victories in November, which included a 3-2 win at Minnesota, but they have allowed at least four goals in six of the last eight games. "The learning experiences are far over now. We're 50-some-odd games into the season," captain Jack Eichel said. "Mistakes are costing us points, and that's points in the standings that we can't lose." Like Buffalo, the Wild are coming off consecutive losses to Dallas and Chicago and now face the prospect of playing four games in six days, including three on the road. "You'd really like to get ahead of it by winning the first game of the week and pushing forward rather than playing uphill," Minnesota coach Bruce Boudreau said. "We want to get ahead and be ahead."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS North, FS Wisconsin (Minnesota), MSG-Buffalo

ABOUT THE WILD (26-22-4): Victor Rask, acquired in a trade with Carolina last month, got off to a slow start with Minnesota and it didn't help his cause that the player he was traded for (Nino Niederreiter) amassed five goals in his first five games with the Hurricanes. Rask finally broke through with his new club and it came at an opportune time as he scored the tying goal late in the third period to force overtime against the Blackhawks. "Better and better for every game," said Rask, who played with Jordan Greenway and Marcus Foligno after Pontus Aberg was hurt. "It takes a little time, but it's just hockey. Just go out there and play."

ABOUT THE SABRES (25-20-6): Coach Phil Housley shook things up at Monday's practice, shuffling all four lines and top three defensive pairings along with both power-play units. Housley moved his previous top unit of Eichel, Jeff Skinner and Sam Reinhart to three separate lines as he seeks to find some balance throughout the lineup. "Different lines are going to be different lines, but we have to play better without the puck, and we have to defend better," said Kyle Okposo, who was paired with Eichel and Conor Sheary. "No matter what line combinations you throw out there, if you don't do that, you're not going to win many games."

          OVERTIME

          1. Minnesota has won five in a row and nine of 11 all-time in Buffalo.

          2. Buffalo has converted 7 of 51 chances on the power play in the last 19 games.

          3. The Wild recalled Fs Luke Kunin and Kyle Rau from Iowa of the American Hockey League and waived D Nate Prosser and F J.T. Brown.

          PREDICTION: Wild 3, Sabres 2

New York Islanders vs. Boston Bruins Preview and Predictions 2019-02-05

NHL Predictions 4th February 2019 by Gracenote
            by Gracenote on 02/04/2019

After finally snapping a 14-game losing streak against Washington, the Boston Bruins will face the coach who guided the Capitals to the Stanley Cup championship last season. Barry Trotz led the Capitals to division titles in each of his last three seasons and now has the New York Islanders sitting in first place in the Metropolitan as they prepare to visit the Bruins on Tuesday night.

New York rallied for three goals in the final 6:14 to notch a 4-2 victory over Los Angeles on Saturday, extending its point streak to eight games (6-0-2) -- the team's longest since a 10-game run in 2014-15. "If you don't show up to work in this business you're not going to have success," Trotz said. "It's still a workman's league. You still have to put the work boots on." Boston ended its nearly five-year hex against Washington in memorable fashion with a 1-0 victory behind Tuukka Rask, who became the winningest goaltender in franchise history with No. 253. "This might be a win that gets us going and trending in the right direction," defenseman Charlie McAvoy said after the Bruins halted a three-game slide (0-1-2).

TV: 7 p.m. ET, MSG-Plus2 (New York), NESN (Boston)

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (30-15-6): Robin Lehner was named the NHL's Second Star of the Month for January after posting a 6-1-1 record with a 1.73 goals-against average and continued his stellar play by turning aside 34 of 36 shots against the Kings to improve to 12-1-1 in his last 14 decisions. "He played awesome, again," New York defenseman Johnny Boychuk said. "He's been playing awesome all year. Both our goaltenders and they'll have to continue to do that to have success." Defenseman Ryan Pulock had a hand in the final three goals in Saturday's victory, become the first Islanders' blue-liner to collect three assists in a period since 2007.

ABOUT THE BRUINS (28-17-7): Center Patrice Bergeron, who was sidelined by injury in Boston's 2-1 shootout win over the visiting Islanders on Nov. 29, will reach a major milestone Tuesday by becoming the fifth player in franchise history to appear in 1,000 games with Boston. A four-time Selke Trophy winner as the league's top defensive forward, Bergeron also reached 30 goals for the fourth time in his career last season. "It's been special," said Bergeron, who has played all 15 seasons in Boston. "Obviously ... playing 1,000 games for the same organization is something that I'm very proud of and I think it's special. That adds to it for sure."

            OVERTIME

            1. The Islanders have permitted two goals or fewer in nine straight games.

            2. Boston is riding a five-game point streak (4-0-1) in the series.

            3. New York is 16-3-2 since Dec. 15, the best record in the league in that span.

            PREDICTION: Islanders 3, Bruins 2

St. Louis Blues vs. Florida Panthers Preview and Predictions 2019-02-05

NHL Predictions 4th February 2019 by Gracenote
              by Gracenote on 02/04/2019

The St. Louis Blues have returned to their tried-and-true formula of relying on Vladimir Tarasenko and a stingy defense as a means to crawl within earshot of the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference. Winners of two in a row and owners of a 6-2-1 mark in their last nine contests, the Blues bid to continue their ascent on Tuesday when they visit the Sunshine State to face the Florida Panthers.

Tarasenko collected a goal and two assists in Saturday's 4-2 victory versus sliding Columbus to boost his point total to 11 (six goals, five assists) in his past nine games. The 27-year-old Russian recorded 11 points (four goals, seven assists) in his first 10 encounters with Florida before being held off the scoresheet in St. Louis' 4-3 win on Dec. 11. That victory improved the Blues to 9-4-0 in their last 13 meetings with the Panthers, who have answered a seven-game skid (0-5-2) with four wins in their last five outings. Mike Hoffman scored his team-leading 24th goal in the third period of Saturday's 3-1 victory versus Vegas and also tallied in the previous encounter with St. Louis.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Midwest (St. Louis), FS Florida

ABOUT THE BLUES (23-22-5): Tarasenko's 18 tallies are one shy of linemate Ryan O'Reilly, who scored and set up a goal versus the Blue Jackets to extend his point streak to seven games (three goals, seven assists) and bolster the optimism of the team's chances for the postseason. "You can feel it," the 27-year-old O'Reilly said. "We're making our push. I believe we're going to get in (to the playoffs). We're just going to take it one game at a time." While O'Reilly collected his 300th career assist on Saturday, Brayden Schenn set up three goals against Columbus to eclipse 200 in his career and capped St. Louis' four-goal third period by scoring with 3:55 remaining in the first meeting with the Panthers.

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (21-21-8): Aleksander Barkov collected a goal and an assist versus the Golden Knights to move within one point of 50 for the season and two shy of 300 for his career. Jonathan Huberdeau notched two of his club-best 37 assists in the first match with St. Louis and has 30 (11 goals, 19 assists) of his team-leading 50 points at home this season. Evgenii Dadonov, who scored in the first contest with the Blues, had four assists in a three-game stretch before being held in check versus Vegas.

              OVERTIME

              1. Florida C Frank Vatrano has scored seven of his 17 goals since the calendar flipped to 2019.

              2. The Blues have permitted two goals or fewer in seven of their past nine games.

              3. Panthers G Roberto Luongo fell to 17-13-2 in his career versus the Blues despite making 29 saves in the previous meeting.

              PREDICTION: Blues 3, Panthers 2

Vegas Golden Knights vs. Tampa Bay Lightning Preview and Predictions 2019-02-05

NHL Predictions 4th February 2019 by Gracenote
                by Gracenote on 02/04/2019

The Tampa Bay Lightning readily accept that every one of them have not been pretty, but they can become the first team to reach 40 victories before anyone else gets to 35 when the Vegas Golden Knights visit Tuesday. The Lightning, who dropped back-to-back games once this season, beat the New York Islanders 1-0 in a shootout Friday before taking a three-goal lead and managing a 3-2 win over the New York Rangers 24 hours later.

"When you win a lot of games throughout the season, you're going to win in different ways and you just have to be comfortable (with that)," Tampa Bay captain Steven Stamkos told reporters after Saturday's win. ". ... We did hang on. That's the way it's going to be coming down the stretch and in the playoffs. You're going to have leads in the third. ... and you've got to find a way to win those. We've relied on our depth a lot this year, and that's what happens." The Lightning, who lost twice to the Golden Knights last season before pulling out a 3-2 win at Vegas on Oct. 26, could be without leading goal scorer Brayden Point (30) for a second straight game because of a lower-body injury. The Golden Knights sit solidly in playoff position in the Western Conference, but are suffering through their longest regular-season losing streak in the team's two-year history after suffering a fourth straight setback Saturday 3-1 at Florida. "Everybody has ups and downs in a season, and it's important to find a way to make it last not too long, to get out of it as quickly as possible and start over," Vegas goalie Marc-Andre-Fleury told reporters. "It's frustrating because we're not used to this."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, TVA, AT&T Sportsnet Rocky Mountain (Vegas), FS Sun (Tampa Bay)

ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (29-21-4): Vegas has managed six goals during their losing streak and last season's leading scorer William Karlsson does not have a point during the swoon. Alex Tuch tops the team with 40 points, but has been kept off the scoresheet in the past two games, and fellow forward Jonathan Marchessault (team-high 17 goals, 35 points) is scoreless in the last three while remaining at 98 assists in his career. Left wing Max Pacioretty boasts four goals, pulling him within one of the team lead at 16, and three assists in his past seven contests.

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING (39-11-2): Erik Cernak was recalled because of an injury in mid-November and has made a home on the blue line since with a plus-11 rating in 31 games to go along with seven assists and his first goal Saturday. "He's played great," Stamkos told reporters. "He's maintained his focus and his confidence, so it was great to see him rewarded (with the goal)." Right wing Nikita Kucherov leads the league with 80 points and Stamkos notched four of his 28 goals in the last four games while defenseman Victor Hedman posted six of his 399 career points in the past five contests.

                OVERTIME

                1. Vegas C Paul Stastny boasts a career-high seven-game assist streak with eight overall during the run.

                2. Tampa Bay LW Ondrej Palat is slated to play his 400th NHL game and RW Ryan Callahan is two assists from 200.

                3. The Golden Knights are second in the league in hits (1,479) and the Lightning (1,317) sit seventh through Sunday.

PREDICTION: Lightning 4, Golden Knights 2

Anaheim Ducks vs. Montreal Canadiens Preview and Predictions 2019-02-05

NHL Predictions 5th February 2019 by Gracenote
                  by Gracenote on 02/05/2019

The Montreal Canadiens are in a better place with the help of the youngest player in the four major North American sports leagues as they host the struggling Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday. The 18-year-old Jesperi Kotkaniemi has scored in back-to-back games after Sunday's 4-3 overtime victory over Edmonton, but the third overall pick in the 2018 draft could just be getting started.

"I think he's been better and better every game that the season's been going on," teammate and fellow Finn Joel Armia told reporters about Kotkaniemi, who has recorded eight goals this season. "Every game, every practice, he's been better and better." Montreal sits third in the Atlantic Division - three points behind Toronto and one ahead of Boston - as a 6-1-1 run also has vaulted it eight points clear in the wild-card race. Anaheim continued its freefall in the Western Conference standings with a 6-1 loss at Toronto on Monday and has been outscored 15-4 in two games since returning from its NHLPA-mandated bye/All-Star break. The Ducks have lost four straight and 16 of their last 18 games (2-12-4) but are just three points behind Vancouver for the second wild-card spot while in a group of six teams within five points of the Canucks.

                  TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, KCOP-13 (Anaheim), TSN2, RDS (Montreal)

ABOUT THE DUCKS (21-23-9): Anaheim was reinforced by the returns of Corey Perry, Patrick Eaves and Jakob Silfverberg after the break, but the trio has combined for one assist in two games. The Ducks are last in the league in scoring at 2.283 goals per contest with Silfverberg, who missed four games prior to the break (lower body), leading the club with 12 goals. John Gibson has yielded at least five tallies in his last three games, with backup Chad Johnson relieving him each time.

ABOUT THE CANADIENS (29-18-6): Max Domi (team-high 47 points) scored his 17th goal Sunday and has registered three tallies and five assists in his last seven games. Jonathan Drouin (39 points) scored in overtime against Edmonton, giving him two goals and two assists in his last four contests. Paul Byron (10 goals) left Sunday's game in the second period with an upper-body injury and was to be re-evaluated Monday while Andrew Shaw, who has missed the last 13 contests (neck), could return Tuesday.

                  OVERTIME

                  1. Kotkaniemi has recorded all eight of his goals and 16 of his 25 points at home.

                  2. Montreal has killed only 6-of-10 penalties over the last three games while Anaheim is 3-for-7 in its last two contests.

                  3. The clubs have split the last six meetings, with the past three being decided by three or more goals, while the home team has won the last seven encounters.

                  PREDICTION: Canadiens 5, Ducks 2

Arizona Coyotes vs. Nashville Predators Preview and Predictions 2019-02-05

NHL Predictions 5th February 2019 by Gracenote
                    by Gracenote on 02/05/2019

The Nashville Predators have struggled at home of late, losing each of their last three contests at Bridgestone Arena. Nashville hopes to turn things around when it continues its three-game homestand Tuesday against the Arizona Coyotes.

The Predators returned to Music City after a perfect three-game road trip and dropped a 3-1 decision to Dallas on Saturday. Calle Jarnkrok scored against the Stars, giving him three tallies in 34 contests since recording a hat trick Nov. 17 versus Los Angeles. Arizona is wrapping up a six-game trek that began with a pair of victories that have been followed by three setbacks, including Monday's 5-4 loss at Dallas. Clayton Keller and Nick Cousins each set up two goals in the defeat, with the former increasing his team-leading totals to 26 assists and 37 points.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Arizona, FS Tennessee (Nashville)

ABOUT THE COYOTES (23-24-5): Defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored against the Stars to get his name in the franchise record book. The 27-year-old Swedish captain has 109 career goals, moving him past Teppo Numminen for the most by a blue-liner in the history of the organization. Alex Galchenyuk also scored Monday, ending his five-game drought and putting him one goal away from hitting double digits for the sixth straight season.

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (31-19-4): Viktor Arvidsson leads the team with 21 goals, recording them in only 30 games, but has notched just seven assists. The 25-year-old Swede also tops the club with five game-winning tallies - one shy of the career high he set in 2016-17 and matched last season. Filip Forsberg is two goals away from reaching 20 for the fifth consecutive campaign but enters Tuesday with a seven-game drought.

                    OVERTIME

                    1. The Predators have five players with double-digit goal totals and five others that are one away from joining that group.

                    2. Arizona D Alex Goligoski exited Monday's game with an upper-body injury and could miss the contest versus the Predators.

                    3. Nashville concludes its homestand Thursday as it meets the Dallas team against which the stretch began.

                    PREDICTION: Predators 5, Coyotes 2

San Jose Sharks vs. Winnipeg Jets Preview and Predictions 2019-02-05

NHL Predictions 4th February 2019 by Gracenote
                      by Gracenote on 02/04/2019

The Winnipeg Jets have lots of momentum entering Tuesday's home matchup with the San Jose Sharks, and as if they needed another breakout offensive performer, forward Jack Roslovic provided just that last week. In his third season in the NHL, Roslovic earned NHL first star of the week honors after scoring five goals with an assist in four games - including his first career hat trick in Winnipeg's 9-3 thrashing of Anaheim on Saturday.

"Four games back after the break, I was well rested and our power play was clicking," Roslovic told reporters after Monday's practice, during which he continued to skate on the second line after playing on the bottom two lines for most of the season. "I was just the lucky product of it." The Jets have won three in a row and seven of their past nine, but the Central Division leaders expect a tough challenge from a San Jose squad that is six points behind first-place Calgary in the Pacific Division. The Sharks have won two in a row and nine of their past 12 after Saturday's 3-2 home overtime victory over Arizona, getting Brent Burns' 13th career overtime goal (tied for most in league history) in San Jose's first game after a 10-day break. "By the end, I think both teams were exhausted," Sharks forward Logan Couture told the media afterward. "It's nice to get two points."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCS California (San Jose), TSN3 (Winnipeg)

ABOUT THE SHARKS (30-16-7): Burns leads the Sharks with 57 points and his 47 assists rank fourth in the NHL through Sunday. Forward Joe Thornton picked up his 999th point with the Sharks, assisting on Kevin Labanc's goal Saturday, while center Joe Pavelski has six points (four assists) during his current three-game point streak. Goaltender Martin Jones made 31 saves against Arizona and is tied for second in the league with 24 wins.

ABOUT THE JETS (34-16-2): Winnipeg matched a franchise-record for goals in a game against Anaheim, racing to a franchise-record 6-0 lead after just one period. Center Bryan Little finished with two goals and one assist, giving him 14 points (seven goals) in his past 12 games while forward Blake Wheeler began the week with 54 assists, four off the league lead. Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck is tied with Jones for wins with 24 and is 3-0-0 in his past three starts.

                      OVERTIME

                      1. San Jose D Erik Karlsson missed his fourth straight game Saturday with a lower-body injury, and remains questionable for Tuesday.

                      2. Winnipeg D Dustin Byfuglien, sidelined since Dec. 29 with an ankle injury, practiced Monday and the Jets are hopeful he can return Tuesday.

                      3. The matchup features two of the top-scoring teams in the NHL through Sunday, as San Jose is third with 3.58 goals per game and the Jets sit fourth at 3.52.

                      PREDICTION: Jets 5, Sharks 4

                        Hot & Not Report

                        Week of February 4th

The left coast has some highly entertaining college basketball games going on in multiple conferences, and this week's piece is dedicated to that. There are some betting angles that we should be able to take advantage of later on this week in both Pac-12 and Big West action, so pack your bags and get on the highway, cause road teams are the focus here.

                        Who's Hot

Fading Pac-12 “weekend” road teams (not named Washington) straight up when playing two road games in the span of 3/4 days

One of the most interesting things about Pac-12 basketball betting is how the conference schedules groups of teams to play consecutive games on the road in a week, spanning from Wednesday to Sunday. Scheduling games that way means that every program has to deal with a second consecutive road game either 48 or 72 hours after a first game in hostile territory, and essentially that's what creates plenty of parity within the conference. Winning on the road is extremely tough for any college basketball program across the nation, but give schools consecutive road games to deal with in such a short span every other week, and the results are rather predictable.

Simply put, each of the conference's 12 teams have already had two separate occasions where they've had to play two straight on the road in short order (i.e. two games from a Wednesday to Sunday, Thursday/Sat etc). That's 24 happenings overall throughout the conference, and of those 24 occurrences, the road team has only swept the weekend road trip five times. Eliminate the perfect Washington Huskies from that equation, and Pac-12 road teams have only swept their weekend series three out of 22 tries.

Conversely, these road teams have been swept (lost both games SU) on their weekend road trip nine times during those 24 opportunities, with Washington State an California going a perfect 0-4 SU in their two chances respectively.

Three teams – Arizona State, UCLA, and Oregon – have established the same pattern in both of their weekend road trips, winning SU in the first game, and following that up with a loss in the 2nd game on the Saturday/Sunday. Utah is the only other school that's followed that pattern at least once as well, while USC, Stanford, and Colorado have each had one occurrence where they've lost the weekday road game and managed to bounce back with a SU win over the weekend.

Now chances are we see 1st place Washington fall victim to this tough scheduling scenario sooner than later, and this weekend they've got trips to Arizona, and Arizona State on Thursday and Saturday respectively. This might be the week to look at adding a wager against the Washington Huskies in there, but there are five other teams in that same boat this week as well.

Those teams are Washington State (at Arizona State, at Arizona), California (at Oregon, at Oregon State), Colorado (at UCLA, at USC), Stanford (at Oregon State, at Oregon), and Utah (at USC, at UCLA). Those five programs currently reside in five of the last six spots in the Pac-12 standings, so fading them outright on the ML may be quite chalky, but this is a trend that probably won't go away for the entire league for the rest of conference play this season.

So if any one of these five teams – and even Washington this week – win outright in that first road game on Wed/Thursday, you'd better be prepared to look the other way in their second game on the weekend. That's because recent history suggests that these Pac-12 programs rarely return home after a perfect weekend road trip, and if you don't believe they've got a shot at an outright win, backing them ATS can be difficult to stomach.

                        Who's Not

Fading road teams in “mainland USA” games in Big West Conference play – 10-17 ATS

Home court/field advantage arguably means more in college basketball than any other major sport in this country, and yet, if you're a basketball team in the Big West this year that isn't Hawaii, you aren't covering too many spreads at home in conference play. Hawaii's got a 4-1 ATS mark at home in Big West play so far, but all the other eight teams in the Big West Conference enter this week with a combined 10-17 ATS home record.

Looking at the overall standings in the Big West, it's become clear that UC Irvine and UC Santa Barbara are the class of the conference at 19-5 and 16-5 SU respectively, but in conference home games, those two programs are a combined 1-5 ATS so far. Throw 3rd place Cal State Fullerton into the mix, and the top three teams in this conference are sitting on a 2-8 ATS mark at home against their rivals this year.

The poor home ATS numbers for those teams are likely more to do with some chalky spreads attached to their name that they can't quite cover, as those three are a combined 7-3 SU at home in Big West play. Going forward, it will be interesting to see if the point spreads start to get shaded down a notch and the results start to flip.

I say that because with more than half of the conference (5 of 9 teams) having just a single SU road win on the entire season, road teams covering spreads in conference play at a 63% clip is quite astonishing. Those five teams with a single SU road win this year – Hawaii, UC Davis, Long Beach State, UC Riverside, and Cal Poly Slo – are a combined 9-6 ATS in mainland conference road games, once again proving that the point spread is still the great equalizer in this business.

So if you are looking at Big West games later in the week – starting on Wednesday - have an eye to backing home teams.

Let’s get you updated on SEC hoops, something that finally exists again after a decade in the toilet -- outside of Florida and Kentucky – but is back on the map nationally the last two years.

Tennessee’s dream season continues and the Volunteers are now alone at the top of the conference standings after Arkansas went into Baton Rouge and handed LSU its first SEC defeat. Rick Barnes’s team (12-7 against the spread) is 20-1 and perfect through eight league contests.

UT will take a 16-game winning streak into tonight’s showdown vs. Missouri. As of early this morning, most books had the Vols installed as a 17-point home favorites against the Tigers, who are 1-4 both straight up and ATS. Tennessee is undefeated in 12 home games with a 5-5-1 spread ledger.

Since needing overtime win at Vanderbilt on Jan. 23, UT has covered the number in three straight games. The Vols downed West Virginia 83-66 before winning 92-70 at South Carolina and 93-76 at Texas A&M. Grant Williams torched the Aggies for 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field. He also had 10 rebounds, four assists, two blocked shots and one steal.

Jordan Bone produced 18 points and five rebounds with a 10/2 assist-to-turnover ratio. Bone buried all of seven of his FGAs and went 4-of-4 from beyond the arc. Lamont Turner added 19 points, three steals, two boards and seven assists compared to merely one turnover.

This game marks Cuonzo Martin’s return to Thompson-Boling Arena for the first time since serving as UT’s head coach by replacing the ultra-popular Bruce Pearl, who was forced out by former AD Mike Hamilton after misleading the NCAA during an investigation into the school’s basketball program. Martin led the Vols to the Sweet 16 in the final season of his three-year tenure, but left Knoxville to take the head-coaching job at Cal before eventually exiting for Mizzou.

Missouri (11-9 SU, 8-11-1 ATS) is 2-6 in SEC play after losing its best player, Jontay Porter, to a season-ending ACL tear in October. Mark Smith, the Tigers’ second-leading scorer (12.6 points per game, 5.5 RPG), has missed three games in a row (sprained ankle) since scoring 22 points and seven rebounds in a Jan. 23 loss at Arkansas. Smith is ‘questionable’ tonight vs. UT. Missouri is mired in a 2-6 ATS slump.

This game will tip at 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

As of early this morning, most books had Auburn (15-6 SU, 10-9 ATS) listed as a 7.5-point favorite for tonight’s home game vs. Florida. The total was 137.5 points.

Pearl’s team is 11-1 SU and 7-4 ATS at home following Saturday’s 84-63 win over Alabama as a 10-point ‘chalk.’ A 6-0 ‘over’ run for the Tigers came to a halt when the 147 combined points slithered ‘under’ the 152-point tally. Bryce Brown led the winners with 23 points on 5-of-7 shooting from 3-point range.

UF saw its three-game SEC winning streak snapped Saturday when it allowed an 11-point second-half lead to get away in a 65-54 loss to Kentucky as a four-point home underdog. The 119 combined points fell ‘under’ the 132-point total. The Gators led 42-31 with 13 minutes left, only to score only six points in the next 11-pluls minutes.

UK’s Tyler Herro scored a game-high 19 points by burying 6-of-8 field-goal attempts, 3-of-4 shots from 3-point territory and all four of his FTAs. P.J. Washington added 15 points and 12 rebounds.

UF’s Andrew Nembhard scored 12 points and had three assists and two steals. KeVaughn Allen and Jalen Hudson scored 11 points apiece for the Gators, who are 2-3 SU and 3-2 ATS in five road assignments.

Florida has failed to cover the spread in four consecutive games. UF is winless SU and 1-5 ATS in six games as an underdog this year. This is the Gators’ richest spot as underdogs.

Florida has an 11-game winning streak over Auburn and has won 21 of the last 22 head-to-head meetings. AU’s last win over UF came at the 2009 SEC Tournament.

The ‘under’ is 13-8 overall for Florida, 4-1 in its five road games. Going back further, the ‘under’ has cashed at a 12-2 clip in the Gators’ past 14 road contests. The ‘over’ is on a 6-1 run for Auburn to improve to 12-8 overall and 7-4 in its home outings.

Tip-off on ESPNU is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

Kentucky (18-3 SU, 12-9 ATS) returns home to Rupp Arena tonight to face South Carolina as a 16-point favorite. The total was 146.5 points as of early this morning. The SEC Network will have the telecast at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

Since losing its league opener at Alabama, John Calipari’s club has won eight games in a row and covered the spread in six straight. However, the Wildcats are 4-6 ATS as double-digit ‘chalk’ and 0-2 ATS in a pair of such spots against SEC competition.

UK and LSU are tied for the second place in the SEC with identical 7-1 conference records. South Carolina (11-10 SU, 8-12 ATS) is in fourth place with a 6-2 mark in SEC action.

Frank Martin’s team went into Athens on Saturday and beat Georgia by an 86-80 count as a 2.5-point road underdog. The ‘over’ (149) was an easy winner to hit in a fifth straight USC game. The ‘over’ is on a 9-1 run for the Gamecocks, who have seen the ‘over’ go 15-4 overall and 5-2 in their road games.

Chris Silva scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds at UGA. A.J. Lawson finished with 19 points and seven boards, while Hassani Gravett and Keyshawn Bryant were also in double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

South Carolina is 3-4 SU and 4-3 ATS in seven road assignments. The Gamecocks are 6-6 ATS with five outright wins in 12 games as underdogs. They’re 2-0 ATS in a pair of games as double-digit underdogs, winning outright at UF as 11-point ‘dogs and losing 89-78 at Michigan as 17-point puppies.

UK had won four in a row both SU and ATS over South Carolina into going to Columbia last year. That’s when the Gamecocks beat the ‘Cats 76-68 as one-point home underdogs. The ‘over’ hit for the third straight time in this rivalry.
