Vegas Golden Knights vs. Detroit Red Wings Preview and Predictions 2019-02-07

NHL Predictions 6th February 2019 by Gracenote
    by Gracenote on 02/06/2019

After pulling out an improbable victory against the league's top team, the Vegas Golden Knights will wrap up a four-game road trip with a visit to the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night. The Golden Knights had dropped four in a row before ending the skid in dramatic fashion, erasing a two-game deficit in a 3-2 shootout win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

"We played a good, hard game against a real good team," Vegas coach Gerard Gallant said after knocking off Tampa Bay. "So, we're happy to end that streak, for sure." A lack of offense continues to hinder the Golden Knights, who have been limited to two goals or fewer in five consecutive games. The Red Wings made it three straight victories with a 2-0 win in Ottawa on Saturday night and have a chance to match their longest winning streak of the season by beating Vegas. "It definitely feels like we're playing better hockey. That streak we had in November, we were clicking pretty good," defenseman Danny DeKeyser said. "That's kind of what it feels as of late."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, AT&T Sportsnet-Rocky Mountain (Vegas), FS Detroit

ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (30-21-4): Forward Ryan Carpenter had to be helped off the ice after absorbing a heavy hit from Cedric Paquette in Tuesday's win and is not expected to play against Detroit, although Gallant said at Wednesday's practice that he was "doing a lot better today." Cody Eakin, who had been limited to one assist in his previous seven games, scored to start the comeback against the Lightning before Valentin Zykov delivered the tying goal -- his first with Vegas since joining the club on waivers. Forward Paul Stastny had his seven-game point streak halted Tuesday.

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (21-25-7): Forward Dylan Larkin, who leads the team with 22 goals and 49 points, sat out the game against Ottawa after suffering a strained oblique the previous night but he practiced with the team Wednesday for the first time since he was hurt. "He did pretty good but the biggest concern is we, the coaching staff and training staff, don't want to put him in a situation where all the sudden he's set back for two weeks," coach Jeff Blashill said. "So that's something we'll talk about." Tyler Bertuzzi (neck), sidelined since before the All-Star break, did not practice Wednesday.

    OVERTIME

    1. Vegas G Marc-Andre Fleury is 10-8-1 with a 3.10 goals-against average versus Detroit.

    2. DeKeyser has only three goals on the season, but has scored in back-to-back games.

    3. Golden Knights F William Karlsson, a 43-goal scorer last season, has tallied just once in 14 games.

PREDICTION: Golden Knights 3, Red Wings 2

Dallas Stars vs. Nashville Predators Preview and Predictions 2019-02-07

NHL Predictions 6th February 2019 by Gracenote
      by Gracenote on 02/06/2019

The Dallas Stars try for their first six-game winning streak since 2012 when they visit the Nashville Predators on Thursday in the second of three meetings over 18 days. Dallas has a solid grip on third place in the Central Division and is seven points clear for a playoff spot after Monday's 5-4 victory over Arizona as its offense, which is tied for third-worst in the NHL at 2.6 goals per game, has averaged 3.2 in the last five games.

"It's believing in the system, getting confidence and going into third periods finding ways to win hockey games in all kinds of different ways," captain Jamie Benn told reporters after the Stars scored four goals in the final stanza Monday, improving to 2-13-0 when trailing after two. Nashville sits eight points ahead of Dallas and three behind Winnipeg in the Central after Tuesday's 5-2 victory over Arizona gave it four wins in its last five games. The Predators at least temporarily solved their power-play woes by snapping an 0-for-34 drought Tuesday thanks to Filip Forsberg, who told reporters: "We've been having a lot of good looks lately, but at the end of the day, it's about scoring goals and we were fortunate to do that (Tuesday).'' The road team has won the first three of five meetings this season as Dallas prevailed 3-1 on Saturday and 2-0 on Dec. 27 with Anton Khudobin stopping 87 of 88 shots.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, FS Southwest (Dallas), FS Tennessee (Nashville)

ABOUT THE STARS (28-21-4): Tyler Seguin (team-high 50 points) has led the offensive resurgence by scoring four of his club-best 22 goals during a three-game scoring streak - all at even strength. Ben Bishop (19-12-2, 2.30 goals-against average, .924 save percentage) has won four straight starts with his third shutout of the season and a .943 SP during that span. Alexander Radulov (14 goals, 43 points) has an assist in each of the last two games but only four points over his past nine contests while Benn (19 goals, 37 points) recorded two assists Monday, giving him just four points in his last eight.

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (32-19-4): Viktor Arvidsson (team-high 21 goals) hasn't scored in two straight contests for the first time since Dec. 27-29 after totaling 13 goals during a 14-game stretch. Ryan Johansen (club-most 45 points) has a goal and two assists in four contests since returning from a two-game suspension for high-sticking Winnipeg's Mark Scheifele. The team continues to receive an offensive boost from defensemen Roman Josi (41 points) and Mattias Ekholm (38) with the former on pace to match his career high and the latter already setting a career standard.

      OVERTIME

      1. Nashville on Tuesday acquired C Brian Boyle from New Jersey for a second-round draft pick in June's draft and LW Cody McLeod from the New York Rangers for a seventh-round selection in 2020.

      2. Dallas allows the second-fewest goals per game (2.53) behind the New York Islanders (2.37) while Nashville is tied for third with Boston (2.55) entering Wednesday.

      3. The Predators have killed 19-of-20 penalties over their last five games while the Stars are 16-of-17 in the same span, and matched a season high with three power-play goals Monday.

      PREDICTION: Predators 3, Stars 2

Edmonton Oilers vs. Minnesota Wild Preview and Predictions 2019-02-07

NHL Predictions 6th February 2019 by Gracenote
Oilers vs. Wild Preview and Predictions

        by Gracenote on 02/06/2019

The fortunes of the Minnesota Wild went from bad to worse on their off day upon learning that captain Mikko Koivu will miss the remainder of the season after tearing the ACL and meniscus in his right knee. Clinging to the top wild-card spot in the Western Conference, the Wild vie to snap a three-game losing streak (0-1-2) on Thursday when they host the skidding Edmonton Oilers.

Koivu, who is the franchise's all-time leader in games played (973), points (688), assists (487) and game-winning goals (33), was injured after colliding with Tage Thompson in the first period of Tuesday's 5-4 shootout loss to Buffalo. Charlie Coyle stepped up in place of the 35-year-old Finn and collected a goal, an assist and a plus-3 rating versus the Sabres. While Minnesota adjusts to life without Koivu, Edmonton has gotten used to life without a victory as it dropped a season high-tying sixth straight (0-4-2) with Tuesday's 6-2 setback versus Chicago. "Same type of thing as the last couple of games. We control a lot of the first two (periods), and then go to sleep in the third," Oilers captain Connor McDavid said.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, Sportsnet West (Edmonton), FS Wisconsin, FS North-Plus (Minnesota)

ABOUT THE OILERS (23-25-5): Leon Draisaitl has recorded consecutive two-goal performances heading into the tilt with Minnesota, against which he scored and set up a goal in a 4-3 setback on Oct. 30 and had two tallies and an assist in a 7-2 romp on Dec. 7. McDavid (two goals, three assists) also has five points versus the Wild this season and 12 (six goals, six assists) in 11 career encounters. Cam Talbot started both contests against Minnesota this season and will get the nod on Thursday to face the Wild, versus whom he is 5-6-1 with a 2.53 goals-against average with a .918 save percentage in 12 career starts.

ABOUT THE WILD (26-22-5): Zach Parise scored with 1:37 remaining on Tuesday to forge a 4-4 tie and give him five points (two goals, three assists) in his last six games. Edmonton native Jared Spurgeon tallied twice against the Sabres to net the offensive defenseman 13 points (six goals, seven assists) since the start of January. Devan Dubnyk owns a 9-3-0 mark with two shutouts, a 1.59 goals-against average and .937 save percentage in 12 career starts versus an Oilers team that selected him with the 14th overall pick of the 2004 NHL Draft.

        OVERTIME

        1. Minnesota boasts a 15-6-1 mark in the last 22 games against the Edmonton.

        2. Oilers C Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has collected 14 points (seven goals, seven assists) in 23 career contests versus the Wild.

        3. Minnesota reached out to Iowa of the American Hockey League and recalled F Joel Eriksson Ek, who has two goals and five assists in 36 games with the NHL's Wild this season.

        PREDICTION: Oilers 4, Wild 2

Vancouver Canucks vs. Chicago Blackhawks Preview and Predictions 2019-02-07

NHL Predictions 6th February 2019 by Gracenote
          by Gracenote on 02/06/2019

The Chicago Blackhawks are still buried in last place in the Central Division, but the postseason hopes that appeared dead just three weeks ago have suddenly been re-invigorated by a season-high five-game winning streak. The Blackhawks are only three points back of the second wild card held by the Vancouver Canucks, who will visit Chicago on Thursday night.

The surging Blackhawks completed a sweep of a three-game road trip by erupting for five third-period goals in a 6-2 victory at Edmonton on Tuesday night. "We have a bit of momentum and we are playing well," Chicago coach Jeremy Colliton said. "We just need to keep pushing and we will get our points." The Canucks dropped consecutive one-goal decisions at Philadelphia and Washington heading into the finale of a four-game road trip and have six teams within three points of them. "Come February, come March and April, we need points and we need them bad," goaltender Jacob Markstrom said. "It's tough when there's a lot of teams chasing you and you're chasing a lot of teams."

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, Sportsnet Pacific (Vancouver), NBCS Chicago

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (24-24-6): Vancouver received relatively positive news before Tuesday's game when it was revealed that defenseman Alex Edler did not suffer any facial fractures after hitting his head on the ice in Monday's game, but he will be sidelined at least a week due to a concussion. With Edler out, fellow blue-liner Ben Hutton logged his second-highest total of the season with 28:35 of ice time while collecting an assist to halt a five-game point drought. Rookie standout Elias Pettersson scored for the first time in five games, giving him 24 on the season and 14 in 24 road contests.

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (21-24-9): Chicago scored four times in a span of less than three minutes in the win over Edmonton and, per usual, star forward Patrick Kane was in the middle of the rally, netting one goal and setting up another to extend his point streak to 12 games. Kane has amassed 10 goals and 18 assists during his streak to boost his season point total to 78, leaving him three back of Tampa Bay's Nikita Kucherov for the league lead. Captain Jonathan Toews has contributed five goals and six assists during a five-game point streak, a span in which the Blackhawks scored 28 goals.

          OVERTIME

          1. Chicago F Alex DeBrincat has three goals and seven assists during a six-game point streak.

          2. Markstrom, forced to play both ends of a back-to-back due to Thatcher Demko's injury, is 4-0-3 against Chicago.

          3. Blackhawks D Erik Gustafsson has three goals in the past two games.

          PREDICTION: Blackhawks 4, Canucks 2

Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Arizona Coyotes Preview and Predictions 2019-02-07

NHL Predictions 6th February 2019 by Gracenote
            by Gracenote on 02/06/2019

Clinging to the last postseason spot in the Eastern Conference and staring at the possibility of a sixth consecutive loss, the Columbus Blue Jackets responded with a big third period in the opener of a three-game road trip. Columbus scored three times in the third at Colorado on Tuesday and hopes to carry the momentum into Thursday's matchup at the Arizona Coyotes.

"We'll take them any way we can right now as far as the state of the team, and hopefully we can build off of that third period," Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella said. "It's like we hadn't won in what seems like a month, and that wears on the players." The five-game slide was the longest of the season for the Blue Jackets, who have won four of the past five visits to Arizona. The Coyotes are mired in a tailspin of their own, dropping the final four contests of a six-game road trip capped by a 5-2 setback at Nashville on Tuesday. "We knew it was going to be a tough trip with the travel and all of that stuff, but a winnable game in San Jose, winnable game in Dallas," coach Rick Tocchet said of a pair of one-goal losses prior to Tuesday's setback.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FS Ohio (Columbus), FS Arizona

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS (29-20-3): Oliver Bjorkstrand opened the scoring Tuesday, giving him goals in three consecutive games for the first time in his career and boosting his season total to 10 -- one shy of his career high set in 82 games last season. "Obviously, every time you get a few goals it helps your confidence," Bjorkstrand said. "I don't want to lose it. I want to keep it going, and to keep playing good hockey, you have to play with confidence. I can't lose that, and it's something I have to work on." Cam Atkinson has scored five times in eight games and needs one more to hit 30.

ABOUT THE COYOTES (23-25-5): Starting netminder Darcy Kuemper suffered an upper-body injury in Monday's loss, prompting the recall of Adin Hill from Tucson of the American Hockey League to serve as the backup to Calvin Pickard in Tuesday's game. However, Hill and defenseman Dakota Mermis were sent back to the minors Wednesday, which is a positive sign for Kuemper, who owns a 6-1-3 record over his 10 starts in 2019. Forward Vinnie Hinostroza has been one of the few bright spots in Arizona's injury-ravaged lineup, scoring in each of the past two games and five times in the last six.

            OVERTIME

            1. Blue Jackets C Pierre-Luc Dubois has five goals and eight points in his last seven games.

            2. Coyotes All-Star F Clayton Keller has not scored a goal in his last five games.

            3. Blue Jackets F Artemi Panarin is riding a five-game point streak and has 15 points in his last 10 contests.

PREDICTION: Blue Jackets 4, Coyotes 3

San Jose Sharks vs. Calgary Flames Preview and Predictions 2019-02-07

NHL Predictions 6th February 2019 by Gracenote
              by Gracenote on 02/06/2019

Tensions may come to a boil when the San Jose Sharks visit the Calgary Flames on Thursday in a battle of the Pacific Division's top two teams. While San Jose has won three in a row and 10 of 13 and Calgary is on a torrid 9-1-1 run, their physical New Year's Eve contest was ratcheted up a notch after Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk's hit on defenseman Radim Simek caught the ire of several Sharks players.

"We'll see," San Jose's Evander Kane told reporters when asked if the late actions in Calgary's 8-5 win will play into Thursday's tilt. "It's something hopefully everyone in this room remembers because it doesn't matter who you are - whether you are a skilled guy, a big guy, a tough guy, a small guy, it's on each and every person in this room to stick up for one another." Captain Joe Pavelski scored his team-leading 29th goal 2:49 into overtime of Tuesday's 3-2 victory versus Winnipeg to give him eight points (three goals, five assists) in his last four outings. While San Jose appears charged for the rematch, Calgary star Johnny Gaudreau said he is focused on his team's play as it heads toward a pivotal stretch in the schedule. "This is the most important part of the season, these last 30 games," said the 25-year-old Gaudreau, who leads the team in goals (29), assists (45) and points (74). "You're still trying to string together wins, other teams are battling, trying to make wild-card spots. It gets harder down the stretch. This when you need your best players to show up, night in and night out."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN-Plus, NBCS California (San Jose), Sportsnet 1 (Calgary)

ABOUT THE SHARKS (31-16-7): Defenseman Brent Burns set up Pavelski's short-handed goal in overtime on Tuesday to boost his club-high totals in assists (48) and points (58). Like Burns, Logan Couture is also riding a four-game point streak after his power-play versus the Jets gave him three tallies and three assists in that stretch. Joonas Donskoi hasn't been as fortunate of late as he has been held off the scoresheet in four consecutive contests heading into the tilt with Calgary, against which he has three goals and an assist this season.

ABOUT THE FLAMES (34-14-5): Tkachuk wasn't interested in providing bulletin-board material when he met with reporters on Wednesday to discuss the rematch with the Sharks. "I don't think I'm going to be the guy who's going to give you what you want on that quote," the 21-year-old said. "... We have guys that can play that style, too. (Kane) is a good player. They're a really good team. It's going to be a great game." Sean Monahan notched five assists for a career high in points for a game in the last meeting with the Sharks, while Gaudreau and Tkachuk each scored two goals and set up two others.

              OVERTIME

              1. Calgary and San Jose combined for 64 penalty minutes in the final 41 seconds in their New Year's Eve game.

              2. The Sharks have surrendered the second-most goals in the league in the first five minutes of a period (48).

              3. Calgary F Mikael Backlund, who had two goals in the last meeting with San Jose, has five points (three goals, two assists) in his last four games overall.

              PREDICTION: Flames 5, Sharks 3

TAPIZ DREAM is the strongest bet in this race. Could provide positive profits based on formidable recent speed figures with an average of 59. Osorio has her trained admirably to break sharply out of the starting gate. With a nice class fig average of 71, has one of the most favorable class advantages in this group of horses. FORESTMUSICALWEST - She has to be considered given the competitive speed figures. Castro will most likely be able to get this filly to break out early in this event. LA CARMELITA - Horses who have been prepared to race at this distance and surface by Morales have shown strong results recently.

With a strong 54 Equibase Speed Fig last time out, will surely be a factor in this race. FIREBIRD - He has been running quite well as of late while recording sharp speed figures. Must be given a shot - I like the figs from the last contest. SWISS SUNRISE - Ought to go to the front end and might never look back. The speed figure of 61 from his most recent affair looks solid in here.

ROYAL LOOKIN - Although it's been awhile, this filly won at a higher class level and at today's distance. I think she could run back to that old form today. This filly has 'tactical' speed, Martinez will use this advantage by laying in the 'garden' spot behind the early pace, and getting first run on the leaders. INTERNATIONAL DIVA (IRE) - This campaigner coming off a solid contest in the last month or so is a win candidate in my humble opinion. The jockey and trainer combination here have a high win percent when they combine forces. This horse brings in a lot of money per start. I believe she will add to that total today. This filly's last speed rating is high enough to win here, I'll wager on her right back in today's event. WHO NOSE IT - This jockey and handler are solid together. Winning percentage when teamed up is extremely hard to beat.

                            #5 TOP CZAR (ML=7/2)
                            #7 THE MASON FACTOR (ML=3/1)

TOP CZAR - Forgive the out of the money finish on the off track last time out. Without the slop, has a good shot today. THE MASON FACTOR - Rosado and Gaudet perform well when they partner up. It's hard to beat a +30 ROI for a jock and handler. Gelding finished first his last race here on January 25th as a shipper. I think he looks like a winner once again. This pony coming off a nice contest in the last month or so is a solid contender in my book. I usually like playing sprinters who are 3-4 races into a comeback.

                            Vulnerable Contenders: #8 TAMBORA (ML=5/2), #6 PHANTOM SPOT (ML=8/1), #2 RELENTLESS LION (ML=8/1),

TAMBORA - Finished second in his most recent performance with a pedestrian speed fig. When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to prove victorious after that in this bunch. PHANTOM SPOT - The speed rating in the last race doesn't fit very well in this affair when I look at the class rating of today's contest. Mark this thoroughbred as a possibly overvalued contestant. RELENTLESS LION - When examining today's class figure, he will have to earn a better speed fig than last race out to compete in this dirt sprint.
