These great Western matchups go largely unnoticed except in the next-days box scores, but San Jose is a gem of a team to watch and Calgary is suddenly in striking distance of Tampa for overall league supremacy. Brett Burns is a top-three MVP candidate right now and it’s the Sharks defense vs. the Flames potent offense tonight. Take San Jose to win on the road

All credit to Chicago, it is finally on track to win games but it may be too late to salvage this season. Cam Ward and Collin Delia have shored up the goaltending with Corey Crawford on IR for Chicago, and that solid play has made all the difference in the Hawks' play. Tighter game is on tap for the Hawks though against the Canucks and scoring will be harder to come by Thursday. Take the Under 6.5.

Minnesota have just lost star forward Mikko Koivu for the season, a season that has been a strange one and very un-Minnesota like. The Wild have been scoring, but have also given up a lot more chances than traditional Minnesota teams have done in the past and now face the “Alberta Cobra” Connor McDavid who can bury an opponent by himself. 5.5 isn't a strong line in this one -- I make it a strong 6.0 at least -- take the over 5.5.

The Stars are my soft choice to win this contest -- they have suddenly woken up and are playing a grinding and very punishing game style, finally using their immense size to run over smaller stature clubs. Nashville is ripe for the picking -- terrible recent play, weak schedule, missing grit and toughness. Dallas could win this one but will need four to beat the Preds and so OVER 5.5 is the play for me here.

Which Tampa team shows up tonight? The “just do enough” team or the free wheeling, potent offense that has propelled them to the top of the NHL? It would be a large upset for St. Louis to win tonight on the road and the O/U line of 6.5 says somebody thinks this is going to go high scoring but I’ll give up the 1.5 for great odds on a Tampa Bay decisive win.

Vegas comes to “Motor City” and will win. Detroit is fast, young, hungry but lacks a finishing quality to their game. Vegas will continue to apply relentless pressure throughout this game and in the end Gerard Gallant’s troops will prevail -- by one or three, it doesn't matter to Vegas. Roll them dice on a Knights win tonight.

Hard to imagine a tougher situation than Randy Carlisle is in as coach of the Anaheim Ducks. His team can’t score and his team can’t stop the opponents which is a bad combination. The only bright spot here is that it is playing a Senators team that lost a tough game to Toronto last night 5-4 but in the process played its rear end off. Any repeat of effort will drown the Ducks in the Rideau Canal. Take Ottawa to win at home.

So here is the lowdown on the night’s best matchup. If the game goes under 6.0 then you have to take the goals on the Montreal side (+1.5) because I don't see Montreal losing 4-1 or 3-1 in a five-goal game. That makes the +1.5 a certainty in a five-goal-or-less contest. If the game goes six or more total, I want to have Montreal AND the goals as insurance. This game will be a barnburner and I will watch it happily knowing I have 1.5 in my pocket with the Habs.

The Caps and the Avalanche are both playing underwhelming hockey right now but Washington is at home and is getting more healthy by the day. Time for the defending champs to step it up and start preparing for a title defense. Until now the the Caps have not done a very good job of convincing anyone they can repeat. A win tonight would be a good start.

The New Jersey Devils just traded their heart and soul away to Nashville -- Brian Boyle, the spirited and cancer-surviving member of the Devils also was their corner grit guy. Now I?m predicting the Devils heart is gone -- take the Islanders to win tonight, the rest of the season suddenly incinerated for the Devils -- kind of an allegory isn't it? Oh yeah, and New York is really a good team.

The Panthers are a deceiving team, they are tough at home (just ask Toronto) and can score lots of goals when their mind is on the task. This game is evenly matched style-wise but Florida is faster and younger and has the best player on the ice in Alex Barkov. This game is an OT/SO type of game and that makes the +1.5 and the Panthers a great prop.

Questions in the Buffalo goal keep cropping up and the slumping Sabres now meet the resurgent Hurricanes that are blowing into town tonight to Western N.Y. I don't trust the Sabres right now and the Carolina duo of TT and Sebastien Aho are really fun to watch. Carolina is rising, Buffalo is falling and the odds on a Carolina win are too good to pass up.
