Edmonton Oilers vs. Pittsburgh Penguins Preview and Predictions 2019-02-13

NHL Predictions 12th February 2019 by Gracenote
    by Gracenote on 02/12/2019

Sidney Crosby got the better of Connor McDavid in their first meeting this season, capping the Pittsburgh Penguins' 6-5 overtime win with a nifty sequence that saw the two-time Hart Trophy winner split a pair of defenders and lift a backhander into the net to cap a two-goal performance. Crosby and the Penguins bid to continue their dominance over the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday when the teams meet at PPG Paints Arena.

Crosby boosted his team-leading point total to 65 after scoring a goal and setting up two others on Monday as Pittsburgh snapped both its four-game skid (0-3-1) and Philadelphia's 10-game point streak (9-0-1) with a 4-1 victory. The 31-year-old, who has 18 points (four goals, 14 assists) in 15 career encounters with Edmonton, has played an integral role in preventing the Oilers from posting a regulation win over Pittsburgh since Jan. 10, 2006. McDavid scored and set up a goal in the 6-5 overtime setback to the Penguins on Oct. 23, and Edmonton is heading into the wrong direction after falling for the seventh time in eight outings (1-5-2) following Saturday's 5-2 setback against the Sharks. "I know the players are frustrated, and we're frustrated at times with it," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "... We're not built like Pittsburgh. We're not built like San Jose."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, Sportsnet, TVAS

ABOUT THE OILERS (24-26-5): Zack Kassian, who has nine points (six goals, three assists) in his last 11 contests, was adamant that Edmonton's upcoming three-game road trip is crucial to the team's postseason aspirations. "With the remaining games we have, we need to go on a run here," the 28-year-old Kassian said. "It's no secret, but it seems like we're a better road team right now. We don't know why, but we're excited to get on the road and put our best foot forward." Leon Draisaitl, who leads the Oilers with 32 goals, joined Alex Chiasson in scoring twice in the first meeting with Pittsburgh.

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (29-20-7): Matt Murray made a career-high 50 saves against the Flyers, highlighted by stopping all 28 shots he faced in the second period to surpass the previous franchise mark of 25 recorded by Sebastien Caron on March 11, 2004. "When you're out there, you don't really think about (the number of shots). You just do what you can to try to stop the puck," said the 24-year-old Murray, who made 41 saves versus Oilers in the previous meeting to improve his career mark to 4-0-0 against the club. Former Hart Trophy recipient Evgeni Malkin was suspended one game on the heels of his high-sticking/slashing incident with Philadelphia forward Michael Raffl, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced Tuesday.

    OVERTIME

    1. Pittsburgh owns a 5-0-0 mark in games pitting Crosby and McDavid, with all five contests resulting in one-goal decisions and three of the five requiring extra time.

    2. Edmonton RW Ty Rattie, who was injured while blocking a shot against San Jose, participated fully in Tuesday's practice and is expected to play versus Penguins.

    3. Pittsburgh's Justin Schultz (lower leg) could return to the lineup or fellow D Chad Ruhwedel may get the nod after the team placed Olli Maatta (upper body) on injured reserve on Tuesday.

    PREDICTION: Penguins 4, Oilers 3

Vancouver Canucks vs. Anaheim Ducks Preview and Predictions 2019-02-13

NHL Predictions 12th February 2019 by Gracenote
      by Gracenote on 02/12/2019

The Anaheim Ducks appeared to bottom out during a franchise-record 12-game losing streak that starting in mid-December and dragged on for nearly four weeks. Instead, that was just the beginning of the misery for the reeling Ducks, who will play their first game since coach Randy Carlyle was fired when they host the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday night.

General manager Bob Murray had no choice but to send Caryle packing after a disastrous road trip extended Anaheim's current losing streak to seven games -- a wretched stretch in which it was outscored 37-8 and each defeat was by at least three goals. Murray opted against naming an interim coach and decided to move behind the bench himself to get an up-close view of the carnage. "It's more problematic than I thought a while ago," Murray said. "So I figured the only way I felt it was fair was for me to get down there." The Canucks have dropped four of five (1-3-1) to fall outside the top eight teams in the Western Conference and will try to regroup from a 7-2 drubbing by San Jose when they open a three-game California road trip.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, Sportsnet1 (Vancouver), FS West (Anaheim)

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (25-25-7): The goaltending situation is muddled in Vancouver, which was forced to start emergency call-up Mike DiPietro in the thrashing by the Sharks because Jacob Markstrom was a late scratch and backup Thatcher Demko is sidelined. The Canucks made a stop-gap move to shore up the position by sending a seventh-round pick in the 2020 draft to the New York Rangers in exchange for Marek Mazanec, who has spent the season with their American Hockey League affiliate in Hartford. Mazanec, 27, is 8-13-4 with a 2.98 goals-against average, last appearing in an NHL game in December 2016.

ABOUT THE DUCKS (21-26-9): Reviving Anaheim is enough of a task for Murray, who also has an unsettled situation in goal with John Gibson hurt and backup Chad Johnson yanked after giving up four first-period goals in Saturday's loss at Philadelphia. Kevin Boyle made his NHL debut by turning aside 24 of 26 shots in relief of Johnson, who is 2-11-0 on the season and is winless since beating San Jose on Nov. 9. The Ducks did get a pair of power-play goals courtesy of Adam Henrique and Nick Ritchie along with a pair of assists from captain Ryan Getzlaf, matching his point total from the previous eight games.

      OVERTIME

      1. Anaheim has won five of the past six meetings, including a 4-3 home victory on Nov. 21.

      2. Canucks F Bo Horvat has scored in consecutive games to reach 20 goals and also tallied against Anaheim in November.

      3. Getzlaf had a goal and an assist in the last meeting, giving him 49 points in 51 games versus Vancouver.

      PREDICTION: Ducks 4, Canucks 3

        # 3 SONG AND A G 2/1

        # 7 HIDDEN DATA 3/1

        # 5 FRIEND OF DUBAI 9/2

SONG AND A G is my choice. He has earned very good numbers under today's conditions and ought to fare well versus this field. Ought to compete well in the early pace contest which bodes well with this field. Is a solid choice - given the 61 speed figure from his most recent race. HIDDEN DATA - Must be carefully examined given the class of races run recently. He should have a good showing versus this less demanding lot.

MIDWATCH - It looks like Luzzi had to learn all about this gelding on February 2nd when riding him for the first time. Back on again today. This gelding is entered right back into a race in less than 10 days; this is a positive sign. VALID THOR - When a sprinter is back in a race less than 10 days after his last outing, it generally means he's fit. Wade rode this thoroughbred for the initial time last time around the track and comes right back this time. Just missed hitting the board on February 2nd at Sam Houston. With decent morning line odds in this field, he has my interest.

SMART'S KINGDOM - I usually try to beat these types of morning-line choices off the extended layoff. This colt hasn't had any recent good fortune in short distance affairs. I find it hard to play him in this event. ITSASCRIMSHAWNOW - Trying to beat this one this time at the price of 8/1.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - MIDWATCH - I like to check out the TrackMaster Platinum PPs to look for the top mount in earnings per start. This race horse looks good to me so I'm making a bet on him.

              STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Bet on #5 MIDWATCH to win if you can get at least 7/5 odds

                #9 LADY DRIVEN (ML=3/1)
                #8 POWER POP (ML=15/1)

AMBERS ACE - Off the board finish last time around the track at Mahoning Valley Race Cour was better than it looked on paper. She improved position in the stretch and never gave up. LADY DRIVEN - This speedball is running a shorter distance today. Should increase her chances. Taking this jock/trainer combination is a good choice. POWER POP - Likes to go to the lead and the fact that today is a shorter trip should be favorable.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #11 ESSENTIAL (ML=7/2), #1 SPIRIT WARRIOR (ML=9/2), #4 JAZZ SESSION (ML=8/1),

ESSENTIAL - Just can't bet on this questionable contender. Didn't show me anything positive last time out or on January 22nd. SPIRIT WARRIOR - Looked good on January 19th, finishing second, but no drills since is a bit troublesome. JAZZ SESSION - Tough to invest in at 8/1 odds after the two most recent outings.

                STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Bet on #3 AMBERS ACE to win if you can get at least 3/1 odds

                  # 8 MAJESTIC VOYAGE 5/2

                  # 1 FINAL BLESSING 12/1

                  # 4 CLINIC 3/1

MAJESTIC VOYAGE is the most respectable bet in this race. Strong average speed figs in dirt route races make this pony a definite contender. With Gonzalez getting the mount, watch out for this pony. This gelding gets a boost with Gonzalez in the irons. FINAL BLESSING - Woodhouse has him trained admirably to break quickly out of the gate. Woodhouse has shown excellent profits (+51 return on investment ) at this distance/surface. CLINIC - Could provide positive returns based on quite good recent Equibase Speed Figs with an average of 65. Will almost certainly go to the lead and may never look back.

Brooklyn Nets vs. Cleveland Cavaliers Preview and Predictions 2019-02-13

                        by Gracenote on 02/12/2019

The Brooklyn Nets took one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference down to the wire on Monday but ended up suffering their fifth loss in the last six games. The Nets will try to snap out of the funk and take some momentum into the All-Star break when they visit the lowly Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday.

Brooklyn came within a missed 3-point attempt at the buzzer of toppling the Toronto Raptors in a 127-125 setback and is pleased with the team's progress despite the recent results. "We're obviously disappointed," Nets coach Kenny Atkinson told reporters. "Tough loss. But I told the guys we came up here two months ago and got our tails handed to us, and I thought tonight we represented ourselves well." Brooklyn is much further along on the rebuilding curve than the Cavaliers, who sit in 14th place in the East and avoided the basement by winning a showdown against the NBA-worst New York Knicks 107-104 on Monday. Rookie point guard Collin Sexton led the way with 20 points for Cleveland, which snapped a four-game slide.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, YES (Brooklyn), FS Ohio (Cleveland)

ABOUT THE NETS (29-29): Brooklyn won 20 of 26 games to pull four games over .500 on Jan. 29 but is integrating several pieces back into the rotation after long injury layoffs and is struggling to find the right combinations. Shooting guard Allen Crabbe missed 26 games before returning last week and logged 31 minutes off the bench at Toronto, scoring 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting. "It's just the mindset, really," Crabbe told reporters. "That's always been one of my biggest things that kind of held me back. Some nights, I'll be aggressive and some nights I won't. But I'm trying to get comfortable like the way I was playing before I got hurt."

ABOUT THE CAVALIERS (12-45): Cleveland forward Kevin Love played in four games before going down with a foot injury, destroying the team's chances of remaining competitive after the departure of superstar LeBron James. Love returned to the lineup this week and played 16 minutes against the Knicks on Monday, collecting 14 points and nine rebounds while going 4-of-10 from the floor. "It felt pretty good to get back out there," Love, who played six minutes in his return at Washington on Friday, told reporters. "I feel like I got in some sort of a rhythm. I enjoyed tonight, especially being back home."

                        BUZZER BEATERS

                        1. Cleveland SG Nik Stauskas went 1-of-9 from the floor in his team debut on Monday.

                        2. Nets SF Joe Harris went 7-of-8 from 3-point range on Monday.

                        3. The road team took the last three in the series, with Brooklyn earning a 102-86 victory at Cleveland on Oct. 24.

                        PREDICTION: Nets 111, Cavaliers 103

Milwaukee Bucks vs. Indiana Pacers Preview and Predictions 2019-02-13

The Milwaukee Bucks are heading toward the All-Star break with the best record in the NBA and look like the favorites in the Eastern Conference, but the Indiana Pacers are lurking to play spoiler. The Pacers will try to push their winning streak to seven in a row when they host the Bucks on Wednesday.

Indiana was left off the list of contenders in the East after All-Star guard Victor Oladipo went down for the season but bounced back from that devastating loss with an impressive winning streak and sits in third place in the East - ahead of presumed contenders Philadelphia and Boston. The Pacers improved to 4-0 on their five-game homestand with a 99-90 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Monday as Wesley Matthews made his team debut. The Bucks avoided their first back-to-back losses of the season by knocking off the Chicago Bulls 112-99 on Monday as superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo returned from a one-game absence. "They tried to get us with a spoiler alert today," Milwaukee point guard Eric Bledsoe told reporters. "We couldn't let it happen, especially going into the (All-Star) break. You know, these games are crucial games even though our record is what it is. These are crucial games we should win."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Wisconsin (Milwaukee), FS Indiana

ABOUT THE BUCKS (42-14): Milwaukee is second in the NBA in scoring average at 117.1 points in its first season under coach Mike Budenholzer but can put in work on the defensive end as well. Antetokounmpo and center Brook Lopez each recorded three blocked shots on Monday as the Bucks held the Bulls to 38.5 percent shooting. "We were just trying to show bodies," Antetokounmpo told reporters. "Coach wants us to protect the paint; the paint's our home. That's what me and Brook did tonight."

ABOUT THE PACERS (38-19): Several of their East rivals made deals at the deadline to better themselves but Indiana waited until the buyout market kicked off and secured Matthews by guaranteeing the veteran shooting guard a starting spot. Matthews went 2-of-10 from the floor in 30 minutes on Monday but still left his new teammates impressed. "I'm his biggest fan," point guard Darren Collison told reporters of Matthews. "I just love how he approaches the game. He doesn't really care too much about the offensive end, it's all about defense and helping the team win."

                          BUZZER BEATERS

                          1. Lopez is 1-of-14 from 3-point range over the last two games.

                          2. Pacers PF Domantas Sabonis is 27-of-36 from the floor over the last five games.

                          3. The home team took each of the first two meetings this season, with Indiana claiming a 113-97 win over visiting Milwaukee on Dec. 12 while holding Antetokounmpo to 12 points.

                          PREDICTION: Bucks 119, Pacers 117

76ers vs. Knicks Preview and Predictions

                            by Gracenote on 02/13/2019

The New York Knicks attempt to halt their franchise-worst 17-game losing streak when they host the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday. New York has dropped 30 of its last 32 games and also is winless in three contests against the 76ers this season.

The timing could be right for the Knicks to pull off a stunner as Philadelphia dropped an intense 112-109 home decision against Eastern Conference-rival Boston on Tuesday with the All-Star break looming. The 76ers have lost three of five games this month and have allowed an average of 115.2 points. New York missed an opportunity to end its slide against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday as it recovered from a 17-point, second-half deficit before succumbing 107-104. "Every night we're going to go out and just play hard," rookie forward Kevin Knox told reporters after the loss. "We're going to compete at the highest level. We might make some mistakes toward the end of the game which costs us the loss. We're in a lot of close games with a lot of great teams, playoff teams. That just shows you how close we are from winning those games. We're just missing a couple of pieces."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBCS Philadelphia, MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE 76ERS (36-21): Center Joel Embiid had 23 points and 14 rebounds against Boston for his ninth straight double-double of the season and 47th of the season but was hardly impressed with his 9-of-22 shooting performance. "It's frustrating (to lose to Boston)," Embiid told reporters afterward. "I was sleepwalking for three quarters. That's on me." Swingman Jimmy Butler has scored 20 or more points in four of the past seven games after having 22 points and nine rebounds against the Celtics.

ABOUT THE KNICKS (10-46): There is a lot of chatter that the losing is part of a "tanking" strategy in hopes of landing the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 draft to select Duke star Zion Williamson. Coach David Fizdale bristles at the notion - "that's just not in our vocabulary," Fizdale told reporters - and insists the team is giving its best effort every night. "I don't read it and listen to it, so I don't get caught up in it," Fizdale said. "I just think there's a difference between losing games and trying to lose games. That's why I think a lot of people have cracked down on just the idea of, you're just coming in to try to lose a game. You're cheating the game. I won't let our players do that."

                            BUZZER BEATERS

                            1. The 76ers posted a 108-105 win in New York on Jan. 13 after recording home wins of 26 and 22 points earlier this season.

                            2. Knicks G Kadeem Allen scored a career-high 25 points on 10-of-16 shooting Monday.

                            3. Philadelphia F Tobias Harris had 10 points on 4-of-14 shooting against Boston and is averaging 15.3 points in three games since being acquired from the Los Angeles Clippers.

                            PREDICTION: 76ers 121, Knicks 110

Detroit Pistons vs. Boston Celtics Preview and Predictions 2019-02-13

Just when the Boston Celtics appeared to be in dire straits, they pulled off a big win at Philadelphia on Tuesday night. The Celtics will try to avoid a letdown and carry some momentum into the All-Star break when they host the streaking Detroit Pistons on Wednesday.

Playing without All-Star guard Kyrie Irving (knee) and just three days removed from a dismal collapse against the Los Angeles Clippers that finished an 0-2 homestand, Boston pulled off a gritty 112-109 win over the 76ers to seize back fourth place in the Eastern Conference. "Good teams have clunkers, but good teams respond to those with the right effort and approach," Celtics coach Brad Stevens told the media. "... I just thought the whole night we played the right way." The Pistons have won four in a row -- one victory shy of matching their longest streak of the season -- and have moved into the eighth and final playoff spot in the East. They've hit the 120-point mark in three of the four straight victories, including Monday's 121-112 triumph over Washington at home.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, FS Detroit, NBCS Boston

ABOUT THE PISTONS (26-29): Blake Griffin and Andre Drummond combined for 63 points, 26 rebounds, nine assists (all Griffin's) and four steals (all Drummond's) in the win over the Wizards. "It's incredible. They're playing the way we obviously need them to play," teammate Luke Kennard told reporters. "Obviously, Dre in the last couple games has been unbelievable. Reggie (Jackson) the past couple weeks has been great for us. Obviously, Blake all year has been really, really consistent." Drummond is averaging 23 points and 15.5 rebounds during a string of eight consecutive double-doubles, while Jackson is 8-of-9 from 3-point range over his last two games.

ABOUT THE CELTICS (36-21): Gordon Hayward endured a recent seven-game stretch in which he scored four or fewer points on four occasions, but the reserve forward has since found his stroke and buried a career high-tying six 3-pointers in seven attempts en route to 26 points at Philadelphia. Al Horford added 23 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals as Boston improved to 26-10 against the East. Jayson Tatum chipped in 20 points and 10 boards and he is averaging 20.8 points and 8.8, respectively, over his last four games.

                              BUZZER BEATERS

                              1. Irving was not with the team in Philadelphia and his status is uncertain for Wednesday's game.

                              2. Pistons SG Wayne Ellington missed all seven of his 3-point tries and had two points in 19 minutes in his team debut Monday.

                              3. Boston won both ends of a home-and-home in October before dropping a 113-104 decision at Detroit on Dec. 15.

                              PREDICTION: Celtics 109, Pistons 108
