Ottawa Senators vs. Detroit Red Wings Preview and Predictions 2019-02-14

NHL Predictions 13th February 2019 by Gracenote
    by Gracenote on 02/13/2019

The Ottawa Senators own the worst record in hockey and have nowhere to go but up as they prepare to open a four-game road trip with a visit to the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night. The Red Wings also have been slumping and are only four points ahead of Ottawa in the Atlantic Division, but the Senators are tied for the fewest wins away from home with seven.

Ottawa's bid to complete a perfect three-game homestand went by the boards when it allowed four third-period goals in Tuesday's 4-1 loss to Carolina. The Senators beat Detroit twice earlier this season but dropped a 2-0 decision at home to the Red Wings on Feb. 2, part of a 2-6-0 stretch. Detroit plays six of its next seven at home after halting a three-game slide with a 3-2 win at Nashville. "We just competed," forward Luke Glendening told reporters after the win over the Predators. "To get two points here is big."

    TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, RDS2, TSN5 (Ottawa), FS Detroit

ABOUT THE SENATORS (21-30-5): With the trade deadline less than two weeks way, rumors continue to swirl that Ottawa could part ways with at least one of their top three forwards. Mark Stone and Matt Duchene, the team's top two scorers, and Ryan Dzingel will all be unrestricted free agents after the season. "You take it for what it is, it's that time of year," forward Bobby Ryan said. "We're in a results-driven business. You feel for the guys who are really going through it. That being said, you still have to go to work, right? You've still got to get to the rink and get the job done."

ABOUT THE RED WINGS (22-28-7): Forward Tyler Bertuzzi suffered a concussion in Detroit's final game before the All-Star break, but he could be back against Ottawa after he was sidelined for the past six contests. "I'm feeling better. I'm hoping for Thursday, maybe," said Bertuzzi, who was skating on the No. 1 line alongside Dylan Larkin and Gustav Nyquist when he was hurt. The possibility of the 23-year-old Bertuzzi returning seemed to get a boost Wednesday when the Red Wings cleared a roster spot by waiving forward Martin Frk, who has one goal and four assists in 25 games this season.

    OVERTIME

    1. Larkin has six goals in eight games, giving him a career-high 24.

    2. Stone has four goals and two assists during a four-game point streak.

    3. Red Wings G Jonathan Bernier made 35 saves against Detroit on Feb. 2 for his first shutout of the season.

PREDICTION: Red Wings 3, Senators 2

Montreal Canadiens vs. Nashville Predators Preview and Predictions 2019-02-14

NHL Predictions 13th February 2019 by Gracenote
      by Gracenote on 02/13/2019

The Nashville Predators are trying to keep pace with the first-place Winnipeg Jets in the Central Division but they must find a way to rectify their recent struggles at home. The Predators have dropped three consecutive games overall and will look to avoid losing their third straight at Bridgestone Arena when they host the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night.

After losing both ends of a home-and-home to St. Louis over the weekend, Nashville came out on the short end of a 3-2 decision to visiting Detroit on Tuesday night. "I think sometimes (we) get a little too individual and we're on our own page," said Predators defenseman P.K. Subban, who was acquired from Montreal in a blockbuster trade for Shea Weber in June 2016. "We have to be on the same page in how we play the game." The Canadiens are 8-1-2 in their last 11 entering the opener of a three-game road trip and could have extra motivation when Weber appears in his 900th game in the city where he played for 11 seasons. "I hope the guys like him enough that they want to go out there and win," Montreal coach Claude Julien said. "Hopefully, they'll leave it all out there on the ice and it's a game to remember."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TSN2, RDS (Montreal), FS Tennessee (Nashville)

ABOUT THE CANADIENS (31-18-7): Montreal, which has been idle since a 4-3 overtime loss to Toronto on Saturday, made separate trades with Philadelphia and Los Angeles to bring in forwards Dale Weise and Nate Thompson and defenseman Christian Folin. Weise, who spent parts of three seasons (2014-16) with the Canadiens, and Thompson have joined Nicolas Deslauriers on the fourth line. "It's going to take a little while to get our chemistry going, but we're hard-nosed guys," Weise said. "We play along the walls, we're going to get to the net, be physical and be reliable."

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (33-21-5): Forward Viktor Arvidsson missed nearly the entire months of November and December but he has been on a goal-scoring binge over the past four weeks by scoring 11 times over the last 12 games to boost his team-leading total to 25. Arvidsson, who amassed 60 goals over the previous two campaigns, joined linemate Filip Forsberg and Jason Arnott as the only players in franchise history to reach 25 in three consecutive seasons. Top-line center Ryan Johansen has collected a pair of assists in back-to-back contests to give him eight points during a five-game streak.

      OVERTIME

      1. Forsberg also is riding a five-game point streak.

      2. Canadiens G Carey Price is 7-0-1 in his last eight starts overall and 4-4-2 with a 2.06 goals-against average versus Nashville.

      3. Predators backup G Juuse Saros made 27 saves in a 4-1 win at Montreal on Jan. 5.

      PREDICTION: Predators 3, Canadiens 2

Colorado Avalanche vs. Winnipeg Jets Preview and Predictions 2019-02-14

NHL Predictions 13th February 2019 by Gracenote
        by Gracenote on 02/13/2019

The Winnipeg Jets appear to have shaken off a rare three-game losing streak last week, and enter Thursday's home contest against the Colorado Avalanche after displaying their depth in Tuesday's victory over the New York Rangers. Early in the game it was center Mark Scheifele scoring twice, giving him 30 goals for the second time in his career, and in the decisive third period the Jets fourth line came through as Andrew Copp netted the game winner with 12:39 to play.

"That can kind of grind down a team over the course of 60 minutes," Copp told reporters after scoring for the second consecutive game and recording a point in five of his past seven contests, as the Jets moved into a first-place tie with San Jose in the Western Conference. "We kind of reset after two (periods) and said, 'we're tied at home, we have to win these games.'" The Avalanche are looking to win any type of game, having dropped eight in a row to fall under .500 after Tuesday's 5-2 home loss to Toronto - an 0-5-3 slide that pushed Colorado four points out of the final wild card spot in the West entering Wednesday. The Avalanche, who are 28th in the NHL in penalty kill (76 percent), gave up three power-play goals in a 1:49 span early in the second period. "I thought we played a good game 5-on-5, but we've got to stay out of the box," Avalanche rookie defenseman Ryan Graves, who scored a goal for Colorado, told the media afterward.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, Altitude (Colorado), TSN3 (Winnipeg)

ABOUT THE AVALANCHE (22-23-11): Graves scored his third goal in just his 12th game with Colorado this season and finished with three blocked shots along with three hits in 14:14 of ice time. It's been far too little offense and far too many defensive breakdowns for the Avalanche during their longest winless streak in two years, being outscored 35-16 during the skid. Forward Mikko Rantanen is fifth in the league with 75 points, one ahead of center Nathan MacKinnon, but the two have combined for six points (three goals) during the losing streak.

ABOUT THE JETS (36-18-3): Scheifele has four goals and two assists in his past four games, and his team-leading goal total ranks tied for 10th in the league through Tuesday. After allowing 13 goals during the three-game stumble last week, Winnipeg has surrendered just four in winning back-to-back games, as goaltender Connor Hellebuyck stopped 69-of-73 shots in moving to 26 wins on the season - tied for third in the league. Forward Patrik Laine's goal drought has reached 12 games, and he has scored just once in 19 games dating back to Dec. 31.

        OVERTIME

        1. Colorado F Alexander Kerfoot and D Samuel Girard each finished with two points Tuesday.

        2. The Jets entered Wednesday tied with Boston for second in the NHL with 21 home victories, one behind league-leader Tampa Bay.

        3. Winnipeg has scored 12 goals in winning the first two games of the season series against the Avalanche, including a 7-4 triumph at home on Jan. 8.

        PREDICTION: Jets 6, Avalanche 3

New Jersey Devils vs. Chicago Blackhawks Preview and Predictions 2019-02-14

NHL Predictions 13th February 2019 by Gracenote
          by Gracenote on 02/13/2019

The Chicago Blackhawks saw their season-high seven-game winning streak come to a close in their last outing, but that doesn't mean that some of their red-hot stars cooled off in the process. Patrick Kane, Alex DeBrincat and rest of the Blackhawks look to get their team back on track Thursday when they host the New Jersey Devils.

Kane extended his point streak to 15 games (11 goals, 21 assists) and tied Hall of Famer Stan Mikita for the franchise record with 14 straight contests with an assist after setting up defenseman Erik Gustafsson's goal in Tuesday's 6-3 setback to Boston. DeBrincat scored his career-high 29th goal on Tuesday to increase his point streak to nine games (six goals, 10 assists), a stretch that began after he was held off the scoresheet in an 8-5 setback in New Jersey on Jan. 14. Kyle Palmieri (team-leading 24 goals, 42 points) joined Blake Coleman in tallying twice in that contest before seeing his cellar-dwelling club lose eight of its next 11 (3-7-1) -- including Tuesday's 8-3 shellacking in St. Louis. "We were just disconnected," Devils coach John Hynes said. "We've got to find a way to get more connected for the Chicago game (Thursday). It wasn't very good in any facet.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, MSG Plus-2 (New Jersey), WGN (Chicago)

ABOUT THE DEVILS (21-17-8): Traditionally mild-mannered goaltender Keith Kinkaid let his emotions boil over when he slammed his stick on the crossbar after allowing the fifth of his career-high eight goals on Tuesday. "We weren't helping him out," Devils captain Andy Greene said, per NorthJersey.com. "We were getting beat to the middle there too many times and giving up too many odd-man rushes. When he's got to sit there under siege the whole time, I'd be frustrated too." Cory Schneider will bid for his first win since Dec. 27, 2017, on Thursday when he draws the start in the second contest of the Devils' three-game road trip.

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (23-5-9): As one might expect, DeBrincat's fellow linemates are flourishing as rookie Dominik Kahun recorded four multi-point performance in his last five outings on Tuesday and Dylan Strome pushed his point total to 17 (four goals, 13 assists) in his last 10 games. While Kahun and Strome have promising futures, four-time Stanley Cup champion Chris Kunitz has enjoyed many special moments during his career and likely will have yet another to savor on Thursday when the undrafted forward plays in his 1,000th NHL game. "Playing 1,000 games, it's certainly not something you think about when you're starting out," the 39-year-old Kunitz said. "But I've been fortunate to play with great organizations and great players. (Sidney) Crosby and Evgeni Malkin in Pittsburgh. Kane and Jonathan Toews here. Among others."

          OVERTIME

          1. New Jersey C Nico Hischier has eight points (three goals, five assists) in his last seven games.

          2. Kane, who leads Chicago in goals (33) and assists (49), had two of each in the previous meeting with the Devils.

          3. Coleman, who was a late scratch for Tuesday's tilt, is considered day-to-day with an upper-body injury.

          PREDICTION: Blackhawks 5, Devils 2

St. Louis Blues vs. Arizona Coyotes Preview and Predictions 2019-02-14

NHL Predictions 13th February 2019 by Gracenote
            by Gracenote on 02/13/2019

The red-hot St. Louis Blues approach Valentine's Day loving life as they visit the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday. St. Louis has won seven straight games and is 11-2-1 in its last 14 after defeating New Jersey 8-3 on Tuesday with rookie goaltender Jordan Binnington continuing the eye-popping start to his career.

The Blues suddenly find themselves at the top of the Western Conference wild-card standings and only two points behind third-place Dallas in the Central Division. "I think we've started actually playing for each other," St. Louis center Oskar Sundqvist told reporters. "Actually starting working for each other instead of working for the individual. I think that's turned it around. ..." Binnington made his debut Jan. 14, 2016 in a relief appearance, and is 10-1-1 with a 1.82 goals-against average and .927 save percentage since resuming his NHL career Dec. 16 while his six straight victories are one shy of the club record set twice by Brent Johnson (2000, 2000-01). The Coyotes prevailed 5-2 at Vegas on Tuesday for their second straight victory and sit four points out of the second wild-card spot - six behind the Blues.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FS Midwest (St. Louis), FS Arizona

ABOUT THE BLUES (28-22-5): Vladimir Tarasenko (team-high 22 goals, 43 points) extended his point streak to nine games (seven goals, 14 points) with two assists Tuesday. Defenseman Alex Pietrangelo (eight goals, 24 points) recorded his first multi-goal game of the season with a pair versus New Jersey and added an assist during a plus-6 performance - the first St. Louis player to record such a rating since Rick Lapointe and Bill Stewart in an 8-2 victory over Vancouver on Nov. 11, 1980. Jayden Schwartz, who recorded 24 goals last season and 104 during his previous five campaigns, scored for the first time in 23 games Tuesday and has four in 42 contests in 2018-19.

ABOUT THE COYOTES (25-26-5): Clayton Keller leads the team with 38 points but hasn't scored in eight games, recording four assists during that span. Alex Galchenyuk (club-high 12 goals, 30 points) scored three times in the last two games and has four in his past five contests. Christian Fischer, Conor Garland, Keller, Richard Panik, Brad Richardson (injured reserve) and Derek Stepan have each scored 11 goals with Panik scoring Tuesday for the first time in 10 games.

            OVERTIME

            1. Blues D Carl Gunnarsson (plus-11) missed his fourth straight game Tuesday while LW David Perron (17 goals, 35 points) missed his ninth in a row as both players continue to recover from upper-body injuries.

            2. St. Louis is 1-for-15 on the power play during its winning streak while Arizona is 3-for-6 with the man advantage in its last two games.

            3. The Coyotes have won three straight meetings, including 6-1 on Dec. 1 in the first of three encounters this season behind a goal and two assists from Keller.

            PREDICTION: Blues 3, Coyotes 2

Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Vegas Golden Knights Preview and Predictions 2019-02-14

NHL Predictions 13th February 2019 by Gracenote
              by Gracenote on 02/13/2019

The Toronto Maple Leafs located their missing power play in their last outing, scoring three times in a 1:49 span in the second period after going 1-for-18 in the previous six contests. The Maple Leafs hope their success with the man advantage travels well as the team makes its fourth stop of a six-game road trip versus the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday.

"It was our power play," Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock said following Tuesday's 5-2 victory over Colorado. "... When you don't do good things, good things don't happen. But when you start to do good things, you get competitive." Toronto has been more than competitive with a 6-1-1 mark in its last eight games to nurse a one-point edge over third-place Boston in the Atlantic Division. While Vegas' third-place standing in the Pacific Division appears comfortable, coach Gerard Gallant made certain that his charges weren't after blasting his team for its "soft game" in Tuesday's 5-2 setback against Arizona. The Golden Knights have dropped four contests in a row at home and have scored just 17 goals en route to losing six of their last eight overall.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, Sportsnet Ontario (Toronto), AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountains (Vegas)

ABOUT THE MAPLE LEAFS (35-18-3): Nazem Kadri joined Kasperi Kapanen with two goals against the Avalanche, with each netting one on the power play. "Like I said earlier, all being on the same page. That makes a big difference," the 28-year-old Kadri said of what clicked for the team with the man advantage. "Trying to make little adjustments, talking amongst the five of us and trying to draw up little plays that possibly could work. That was the difference." John Tavares highlighted his fourth multi-point performance in five outings with a one-touch pass to Auston Matthews, whose power-play tally accounted for his 99th career goal.

ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (31-23-4): Vegas' sputtering offense hasn't been an issue for Paul Stastny, who has recorded 19 points (four goals, 15 assists) in his last 19 games. Cody Eakin set up Brandon Pirri's goal against the Coyotes to give him three points (two goals, one assist) in his last four contests heading into the tilt versus Toronto, against which he scored in a 3-1 setback on Nov. 6. Speaking of Pirri, he has collected 10 points (seven goals, three assists) in 11 home games for Vegas.

              OVERTIME

              1. Vegas RW Alex Tuch, who leads the team in assists (24) and points (40), has been held off the scoresheet in six straight games.

              2. Maple Leafs G Frederik Andersen, who made 36 saves in his last meeting versus the Golden Knights, has turned aside 133 of 143 shots during his four-start winning streak.

              3. Vegas D Deryk Engelland is slated to play in his 600th career game on Thursday.

PREDICTION: Golden Knights 3, Maple Leafs 2

Washington Capitals vs. San Jose Sharks Preview and Predictions 2019-02-14

NHL Predictions 13th February 2019 by Gracenote
                by Gracenote on 02/13/2019

The San Jose Sharks were reeling the last time they saw the Washington Capitals and about to hit the All-Star break mired in a four-game losing streak before Evander Kane scored the tying goal with one second left in regulation. The Sharks wound up prevailing in overtime and haven't lost since as they brace for a rematch with visiting Washington on Thursday night.

San Jose had allowed six goals in four straight games before the dramatic comeback win against the Capitals that spurred a six-game winning streak and vaulted the Sharks atop the Pacific Division. "It was a big win for a bunch of reasons," coach Peter DeBoer said. "We were obviously floundering and we were running on fumes heading into the break. The win and the way we won set up our break so we could enjoy it." Reigning Stanley Cup champion Washington went into the break in a seven-game rut but started February on a 4-1-1 run before opening a season-high six-game road trip with a 3-0 setback at Columbus on Tuesday. "I think we've just got to focus in on (Thursday's) game," Capitals forward Tom Wilson said. "We've got to get back on track."

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, NBCS Washington, NBCS California (San Jose)

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (31-19-7): Washington was whistled for five minor penalties in the loss to Columbus, pushing its league-leading total to 206 and leaving both the players and coach Todd Reirden frustrated with the lack of discipline. "Same old story with the penalties," defenseman Brooks Orpik said. "Especially on a back-to-back night, it just wears you down and takes a lot of energy out of you." Captain Alex Ovechkin, who leads the league with 38 goals, recorded a hat trick in last month's meeting to increase his totals against San Jose to 11 goals and 18 points in 19 games.

ABOUT THE SHARKS (34-16-7): Defenseman Erik Karlsson, who has been sidelined for the past eight games due to a lower-body injury, was a full participant in Wednesday's practice and has a chance to return to the lineup against Washington. "Just been doing stuff off the ice to try to fix the problem that I've had," Karlsson said. "I feel like it's time to push it forward a bit and test the waters a bit. It's still day-to-day and it felt decently good out there." At Wednesday's practice, Karlsson was paired with Marc-Edouard Vlasic, who also missed the last meeting due to a wrist injury.

                OVERTIME

                1. Sharks F Tomas Hertl had a had trick in the last meeting, igniting a six-game stretch in which he has seven goals and 12 points.

                2. Capitals C Evgeny Kuznetsov has seven goals and eight assists in his last nine games, including one of each versus San Jose.

                3. Kane has 10 goals in the past nine games, including a pair against Washington.

                PREDICTION: Capitals 4, Sharks 3

Vancouver Canucks vs. Los Angeles Kings Preview and Predictions 2019-02-14

NHL Predictions 14th February 2019 by Gracenote
Canucks vs. Kings Preview and Predictions

                  by Gracenote on 02/14/2019

The Vancouver Canucks are in the thick of the playoff race in the Western Conference despite their current struggles. Vancouver hopes to remain close in the wild-card chase when it visits the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday.

The Canucks outshot Anaheim 35-22 on Wednesday but were thwarted at every turn as they dropped a 1-0 decision in the opener of their three-game road trip. Vancouver, which has lost five of its last six overall contests (1-4-1) and four straight away from home, trails Minnesota by two points for the second wild card as it looks to halt its playoff drought at three seasons. Los Angeles is kicking off a three-game homestand as it returns to Staples Center for the first time in more than three weeks. The Kings, who last played at home on Jan. 21, suffered a 6-4 loss at Washington on Monday to finish their season-high six-game road trip at 3-2-1 and sit eight points out of the second wild-card spot.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, Sportsnet Pacific (Vancouver), FS West (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (25-26-7): Brock Boeser has been kept off the scoresheet in back-to-back contests after notching at least one point in seven of his previous eight contests. The 21-year-old right wing is one goal away from his second straight 20-goal season and two points shy of 100 for his career. Bo Horvat tallied in consecutive games before being blanked Wednesday and needs two goals to match the career high of 22 he set last campaign.

ABOUT THE KINGS (23-28-5): Austin Wagner registered the second two-goal performance of his rookie season Monday, giving him three tallies in as many contests. Adrian Kempe and Tyler Toffoli are riding five-game point streaks, with each collecting four goals and three assists. Trevor Lewis notched an assist against the Capitals in his first game since Nov. 13 as the 32-year-old center missed 38 contests with a broken foot.

                  OVERTIME

                  1. Kings captain Anze Kopitar has landed on the scoresheet in seven of his last eight games, registering four goals and seven assists in that span.

                  2. Vancouver rookie C Elias Pettersson recorded two goals and three assists during a four-game point streak that came to an end Wednesday.

                  3. Los Angeles RW Dustin Brown's next point will be the 600th of his career.

                  PREDICTION: Canucks 4, Kings 3

Game of the Night - Oklahoma City (-4, 237) at New Orleans, 8:05 ET, TNT

All Pelicans fans want from Anthony Davis this Valentine’s Day is for him to show a little heart.

They already know he’s not their long-term Romeo, but since he’s still going to throw on their uniform for the next few months before being shipped out this summer, it would be nice if he supplies an honest effort once he’s out there.

Following a disastrous start in a 118-88 loss to Orlando on Tuesday that saw him shoot 1-for-9 in an impossibly listless effort for someone with his immense skill set, Davis had the nerve to say “we sucked” in reference to the Pels’ performance when discussing it post-game, adding that “no one was interested in playing.”

Davis finished with three points and six rebounds as the Magic built a 28-point first-quarter lead. The effort was unprofessional, but it was obvious that is all started with the guy who will be representing the franchise at this weekend’s All-Star festivities in Charlotte. Not surprisingly, his apathetic effort had people calling for the NBA to rescind its demand that Davis continue playing for New Orleans if healthy, having cited that “league rules governing competitive integrity therefore require that he be permitted to play” despite the fact that the Pels would be just fine if he never suited up for them again in order to protect their biggest asset.

After starting off 0-for-6 in the first half, Davis should’ve been embarrassed into showing up for the second half but didn’t do much there either, so it remains to be seen if he can put that performance behind him and chalk it up to an aberration as he takes the court against the Thunder for a game all eyes will be on tonight. If you’re going to take the Pelicans plus the point, you’re counting on him rebounding with some pride to keep this game competitive since his team is actually nearing full strength with Elfrid Payton close to returning from an ankle injury.

New Orleans has lost eight of 11 and has failed to cover in three straight games despite moving only Nikola Mirotic to Milwaukee at the trade deadline, holding on to Davis, Jrue Holiday and Julius Randle despite getting offers for all three. Unless they want to get embarrassed again, Davis and his teammates have to show up with the right mindset against the surging Thunder, which is a league-best 11-1 over their last dozen games, pulling within 1.5 games of Denver for first place in the Northwest Division.

New Orleans native Paul George has emerged as a legitimate MVP candidate since no player, not even James Harden, has been better over the past few weeks. George has topped 30 points in 10 of 12 games during Oklahoma City’s recent surge and is averaging 39.7 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.8 assists in February. He’s shot over 50 percent only once in three encounters with the Pels this season and is averaging only 23.7 points per game against them, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see him close the series with a big night as OKC seeks out its third win in four matchups. He piled up 47 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists in Monday’s 120-111 win over Portland and has made at least two 3-pointers in 35 consecutive games.

Russell Westbrook is averaging 20.7 points, 10.0 rebounds and 10.7 assists against New Orleans despite having to deal with a plus defender in Holiday and is riding a streak of 10 consecutive games with a triple-double, setting a new NBA record in surpassing Wilt Chamberlain’s run of nine straight. Despite his tremendous run, Westbrook continues to struggle from the field, coming off a 5-for-19 shooting night against the Blazers. He’s shooting less than 35 percent from the field over his last five and has made just four of 21 3-pointers in February, so he’s got plenty of room for improvement from an efficiency standpoint going forward.

Westbrook might be in for a larger workload if this game remains close since sixth man Dennis Schroder is out tonight due to a new baby in the family. Starting power forward Jerami Grant is likely out with an ankle sprain, so OKC will be working short-handed. Veteran Patrick Patterson will get increased minute up front, while rookie guard Deonte Burton and 13-year-pro Raymond Felton should shore up the backcourt.

The ‘under’ has prevailed in five of the last seven games involving the Pelicans and in three straight Thunder contests.

                          Charlotte at Orlando (-3, 215.5), 7:05 p.m. ET:
Despite entering this one two games under .500, the Hornets are going to head into the All-Star break atop the Southeast Division regardless of what happens here. The Magic are on a four-game winning streak currently tied for second-best alongside OKC behind only the Raptors, who have won six straight. Their 6-1 run through seven games is the team’s best in years as Orlando has responded well to the front office hanging on to center Nikola Vucevic and sixth man Terrence Ross, both of whom are unrestricted free agents at season’s end.

The Magic are all-in on a playoff push as they try to snap a streak of six straight season without reaching the postseason. Orlando is just two games behind the Hornets for the division lead and just one game behind Detroit and Miami for the eighth and final berth in the Eastern Conference. Charlotte has posted a pair of blowout wins over the Magic this season, winning by 32 points and 25 points respectively. Kemba Walker, the Hornets’ All-Star point guard, has averaged 25 points in the wins, but his team will have to overcome fatigue in their fourth road game in nine days and is just 8-20 on the road. The Hornets have beaten the Magic 13 consecutive times, winning 11 under Steve Clifford and then beating their former head coach in their first two matchups of the season. Orlando has seen Vucevic and Ross each excel for weeks and has gotten a significant boost from second-year forward Jonathan Isaac, who averaged 18 points and 3.3 blocks over the team’s last three wins.

The Magic remain without rookie backup center Mo Bamba, while the Hornets are likely to be without Tony Parker, who is having back trouble. Shelvin Mack, recently signed after being let go by Memphis, should get backup minutes against an Orlando team he suited up for last season.

                          New York at Atlanta (-7, 224), 7:35 p.m. ET:
The Knicks have lost 18 straight games after falling against the 76ers last night and now visit a Hawks team riding high after taking down the Lakers in front of a big crowd at State Farm Arena on Tuesday. New York’s tank job is going as desired since it is sporting the league’s worst record (10-47) in the race to win the lottery and the rights to select between Duke star freshmen Zion Williamson and R.J. Barrett. Atlanta has lost two of three against the Knicks this season, finally getting on the board in the most recent meeting back on Dec. 21.

New York won’t have to deal with old friend Jeremy Lin, who was waived earlier this week and debuted with Toronto last night, so expect them to see more of rookie guard Trae Young, who led the way in the upset of L.A. with 22 points and 14 assists. He’ll be matched up against Dennis Smith, Jr., who has led the Knicks in scoring (16.6 ppg) since arriving from Dallas in a deal that shipped out Kristaps Porzingis, Tim Hardaway, Jr., Trey Burke and Courtney Lee while also landing center DeAndre Jordan to serve as a mentor for rookie 7-footer Mitchell Robinson. Atlanta list rookie wing Kevin Huerter as probable with an ankle injury, while New York is still without guards Emmanuel Mudiay and Frank Ntilikina, creating more opportunities for rookie free-agent pickup Kadeem Allen, who has averaged 17.3 points over his last three outings. The ‘over’ is on an 11-5 run in Hawks games and has connected in three of the last four Knicks’ contests. The high-side went 10-1 in Wednesday’s NBA action.

                              Illinois at Ohio State (-8 ½, 142 ½) – 7:00 PM EST – ESPN2

Both these Big 10 squads sit in the middle of the conference standings, but each team has stepped up of late. Illinois (9-15 SU, 10-14 ATS) is coming off three consecutive home wins over Nebraska, Michigan State, and Rutgers to move to 5-8 inside the league. After shocking Michigan State as 10 ½-point underdogs last Tuesday, the Illini held off Rutgers in overtime, 99-94 on Saturday to win three straight games for the first time this season.

Ohio State (16-7 SU, 10-13 ATS) started Big 10 play with a pair of December victories, but when the calendar flipped to 2019, the Buckeyes dropped five straight conference affairs. The Buckeyes have rebounded with wins in four of their last five contests, including a 55-52 triumph at Indiana as 2 ½-point underdogs this past Sunday. Although the Buckeyes have pulled to 6-6 in the league, OSU’s last four wins have come against teams that own conference records of 4-9 or worse.

Illinois is barely above the likes of Indiana, Nebraska, Rutgers, and Penn State, as the Fighting Illini is seeking its first true road win of the season. The Illini has lost 11 of 12 games away from Champagne, while capturing only one away Big 10 victory since the start of last season, which came at Rutgers in last year’s season finale.

Ohio State took care of Illinois in the first meeting to tip off Big 10 play in December, 77-67 as five-point road favorites. The game took place at the United Center in Chicago as the Buckeyes erased a four-point halftime deficit and outscored the Illini, 43-29 in the second half. Illinois was held to 33% shooting from the floor, while each team knocked down 23 free throws. Ohio State has captured eight of the past nine meetings since 2013, but Illinois has covered in its last two trips to Columbus.

                              Houston (-8, 140) at UConn – 7:00 PM EST – ESPN

Only one team has tripped up Houston (23-1 SU, 16-7-1 ATS) this season as the Cougars seek their ninth win in a row on Thursday. Since losing at Temple on January 9, Houston has won and covered in each of its past four AAC road contests, including a nine-point triumph at UCF last Thursday. The most recent victory for Kelvin Sampson’s team came in Sunday’s AAC showdown with Cincinnati as the Cougars held off the Bearcats, 65-58 to cash as 4 ½-point favorites and move to 10-1 in the league.

Houston heads to UConn (13-11 SU, 14-10 ATS) as the Huskies have won only one game away from Storrs, but they are 12-2 at home. UConn is riding a four-game home winning streak since losing the AAC opener to UCF, but the Huskies are coming off a pair of road defeats at Temple and Memphis. The Huskies pulled out a narrow cover as 7 ½-point underdogs in a 78-71 setback at Memphis last Sunday, while improving to 5-1 ATS in the past six games.

The Cougars have cashed in six of seven road contests, while covering in five of the past seven opportunities as a favorite of five points or more. Houston won the lone matchup between these two teams last season, 81-71 in Texas, but the Huskies picked up the cover as 14 ½-point underdogs. The Cougars are making their first trip to Storrs since December 2016 when they dominated the Huskies, 62-48 as 3 ½-point favorites.

                              Arizona at Utah (-4 ½, 145 ½) – 9:00 PM EST

It’s turning into a free-fall of epic proportions in Tucson as Arizona (14-10 SU, 10-13-1 ATS) has gone from 5-1 in Pac-12 play to 5-6 in a two-week span. The Wildcats have dropped five consecutive games, including three losses by double-digits in this stretch. Arizona hung with conference leader Washington last Thursday before losing by seven, but the Wildcats were blitzed early by Washington State in a 69-55 defeat last Saturday as 11 ½-point favorites.

The Wildcats travel north to Utah to face the Utes (13-10 SU, 11-12 ATS), who have overcome a 1-2 Pac-12 start to own a 7-4 conference mark. Utah has won five of six games away from Salt Lake City with the only road setback coming at Arizona in overtime, 84-81 on January 5. The Utes grabbed the cover as eight-point underdogs and shot 56% from the field, led by Sedrick Barefield’s 26 points. However, Utah has lost nine of the past 10 matchups with Arizona, with the only victory in this span coming at Huntsman Center in February 2016 as 3 ½-point favorites, 70-64.

Utah swept the Los Angeles schools last weekend, capped off by an incredible comeback win at UCLA last Saturday. The Utes climbed out of a 22-point hole as Parker Van Dyke drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer to stun the reeling Bruins, 93-92, while cashing as five-point underdogs. However, Utah has struggled at home of late by losing its last two to Oregon and Oregon State. Since hitting the UNDER against Washington in its conference home opener, the Utes have finished OVER the total in four straight games at Huntsman Center.

Two of the top three teams in the CAA do battle on Thursday as Hofstra (21-4 SU, 18-6 ATS) visits College of Charleston (20-6 SU, 10-14-1 ATS). The Pride sit atop the league at 11-1, while the Cougars are in third place at 9-4. Hofstra bounced back from a 14-point loss at Northeastern to win the last two games at home against William & Mary and Elon. Charleston is riding a six-game winning streak, which includes four consecutive victories at home. The last loss suffered by the Cougars came to the Pride on January 19 as Hofstra grabbed an 86-72 triumph as five-point home favorites.

Northeastern is wedged in between Hofstra and Charleston towards the top of the CAA standings at 9-3. The Huskies (15-9 SU, 12-10-2 ATS) are fresh off their fourth straight win after outlasting Elon in overtime, 72-60 on Saturday. In spite of the 12-point win, Northeastern failed to cash as hefty 16 ½-point favorites for only their second non-cover in the last 10 games. The Huskies visit UNC-Wilmington as the Seahawks (8-18 SU, 10-13-2 ATS) have lost five straight to slip to 4-9 in the CAA. Northeastern cruised past UNCW as 12-point home favorites, 88-71 on January 19 to pick up its fourth consecutive win over the Seahawks since the start of last season.

Delaware and Towson each seek consistency as the two squads meet in Baltimore. The Blue Hens (15-11 SU, 11-11-2 ATS) snapped a three-game skid in a 70-66 home win over UNC-Wilmington last Saturday, but Delaware pushed as a four-point favorite to fall to 0-5-1 ATS the last six contests. The Tigers (9-16 SU, 10-14 ATS) have heated up from an ATS perspective by cashing in five of the past six games, while going 4-2 SU. Most of this damage has been in the underdog role, as Towson will be listed as a CAA favorite for only the third time. Towson squeezed past Delaware as 5 ½-point road underdogs, 64-63 in mid-January to improve to 7-0 in the last seven meetings.

Four teams finished tied for the bottom spot of the CAA last season, including Drexel and James Madison. The Dragons (12-14 SU, 16-9 ATS) won only six conference games in 2018, but Drexel has been the most improved team in the Colonial by beginning 6-7 after an 0-2 start. Drexel grabbed its seventh consecutive cover in a two-point home defeat to Charleston last Saturday, while owning a 5-2 ATS mark in CAA road contests. Drexel heads to James Madison as the Dukes (10-15 SU, 7-16 ATS) have put together a 1-6 SU/ATS mark the last seven games overall. The Dragons got past the Dukes in their first matchup in Philadelphia, 73-68 as 3 ½-point favorites last month as these teams have met seven times since the start of the 2016-17 season.
