Miami finishes up 6 straight away from home tonight in Philadelphia, and the Heat come into this game with a 2-3 straight up mark so far, but a 3-2 against the spread mark - all in the underdog role.
Can they cover tonight in Philadelphia?
I am going to play against the cover, even with the near double-digits, as I have a feeling that based on the recent meetings between the teams, the Sixers like their matchups in this Eastern rivalry.
Philadelphia went to the All-Star Break with wins and covers in 3 of their last 4, and the added week off gives Brett Brown a little more time to incorporate new addition Tobias Harris into this talented mix. True, Philly will have to start their stretch run with Joel Embiid once again sidelined - knee inflammation! - but I am confident the addition of Harris will swing that balance for the time being.
The Sixers are 23-7 straight up at home, and they are 7-1 against the spread for the year when favored by -7 to -9 1/2 points.
Miami comes in with a 3-3 spread mark as a dog of +7 to +9 1/2 points for the year, and in this series they were a 114-124 loser at home in the teams first meeting since last April's playoff series. The 76ers took that playoff series in 5 games, covering in each of their 4 playoff wins.
Philadelphia has also covered in 5 of the last 7 series meetings against Miami when playing on their home hardwood.
With Miami just 2-6 straight up their closing 8 games prior to the break, I will side with Philadelphia to come out strong here tonight and make a statement with a double-digit win and cover.
First game back from the long All-Star Break, and everybody's engines should be more than ready to rev tonight when two of the powerhouses in the Eastern Conference meet up at the Fieserv Forum.
Boston entered the break minus one Kyrie Irving and one Terry Rozier, but still went to the break with Overs played in 4 of their final 6 games. That 4-2 Over run puts them at 34-24 Over the total for the season, and even though the Bucks went to their break having held Under in their last 3, and 4 of their final 6, I see this Celtics-Bucks game landing Over the total.
Series numbers when these teams meet - both regular season, and postseason - show a definite Over trend, as both regular season meetings this year have landed Over the posted price, and the Over is 8-2 now the last 10 times the teams have played. Overall, the Over between the teams is 16-5-1 the last 22 series meetings!
The C's come in toting a 113 points per game average, while they allow 106.6 points per game against.
The Bucks come into this one with a 116.9 points per game average, while allowing 107-1 points per game to be posted on them.
Have to believe those averages will be met and then some with both teams having been idle since the 13th. Oh sure, they may start their engines a little slow since its been over a week since either saw live game action, but things will get cranking on Thursday night and the Celtics and Bucks will play Over the total.
My free play for Thursday night is on the Golden State Warriors laying the big number to the Sacramento Kings.
Normally I'd be worried about a matchup like this, and that Golden State would overlook the Sacramento Kings.
But since the Kings are not out of the playoff hunt, and these two could very well end up playing one another in the postseason, I am going to lay the points with the Warriors, who will be out to make a statement when the teams meet for the final time in the regular season.
The Warriors closed the first half of the season with the best record in the Western Conference. They'll be eager to keep that momentum flowing after getting seven days off to rest and regroup.
Tonight is a good chance to hit the ground running by scoring a sweep of the season series from the Kings after having recorded three close wins earlier this season - all by an average of 3.3 points per win.
Lay the chalk, as Golden State won't take any chances, and will have this one in hand by the end of the third.
The 'Canes posted a whopping 44 shots on net their last time out, but Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist returned to his "King" form, as New York held off the previously sizzling Hurricanes for the 2-1 win on Carolina ice.
I am going to look for Carolina to resume their push for a postseason spot with the road win tonight against the Florida Panthers. Carolina owns 68 points which is currently just one point behind Columbus for the last playoff spot in the East.
Prior to losing to the Blue Shirts, Carolina had been winners of 3 in a row, and were on an 8-2 run their 10 previous on ice affairs.
Florida has won their last 3 skates, and are 5-2 their last 7, so by all means this game will be no breeze for the Hurricanes, but with Carolina having won 5 of the last 7 series meetings, that includes 3 of 4 and the first meeting this year back in November, 4-1 on Hurricanes ice, I am looking for the Hurricanes who are currently 8 points ahead of the host Panthers to keep up their charge for a postseason berth.

Phoenix (+) over Cavaliers- A pair of the NBA's worst hook-up in Cleveland where the Cavaliers will host the Suns with the only thing missing would be the Knicks in the stands to see who they have to fall before. Phoenix is just 4-26 SU and 12-18 ATS in the road but surprisingly are 7-1 ATS on the road against losing teams. The Cavaliers are just 7-22 Su at home and will fail here. Nets are still getting no respect even without Damian Lillard the Blazers are still favored over the hungry Nets who are trying to make headway in the Eastern Conference. Blazers have a big showdown with Philly on deck and the Blazers have been a bad road team this season going just 10-15 SU and the Nets are 17-13.
Trail Blazers are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
Nets are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games playing on 3 or more days rest.
Nets are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 vs. Western Conference.
Nets are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record
