Edmonton Oilers vs. Nashville Predators Preview and Predictions 2019-02-25

NHL Predictions 24th February 2019 by Gracenote
    by Gracenote on 02/24/2019

The Edmonton Oilers appear to have turned the corner following a demoralizing stretch in which it lost 11 of 12 contests (1-8-3). After answering that run with consecutive victories, the visiting Oilers bid for their second straight triumph following a 13-game winless stretch versus the Nashville Predators when the clubs meet at Bridgestone Arena on Monday.

"If you compete at this level like we're doing, you give yourself a chance against anyone every night," Edmonton coach Ken Hitchcock told reporters following Saturday's 2-1 win over Anaheim. "Now we're on the other side of these one-goal games, and we're going on the road where quite frankly we play better than we do at home." The Oilers begin their season-high five-game road trip at Nashville, where they ended a 13-game skid (0-11-2) against the Predators with a 5-3 victory on Oct. 27. Nashville is concluding a three-game homestand after being shut out for the fourth time - all at Bridgestone Arena - following Saturday's 5-0 setback to Colorado. "We're in the business of winning hockey games, and it didn't happen (Saturday)," Predators coach Peter Laviolette told reporters following his team's fifth loss in eight outings. "We'll look at it and we'll work to be better. There're a couple of games in the last 15 where I don't think we competed very hard or we didn't play very hard; I didn't think that was the case (on Saturday)."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, Sportsnet West (Edmonton), FS Tennessee (Nashville)

ABOUT THE OILERS (26-29-6): Leon Draisaitl extended his point streak to six games and pushed his point total to 18 (12 goals, six assists) in his last 13 contests after setting up Sam Gagner's second-period goal against the Ducks. The 23-year-old Draisaitl scored two of his career-high 36 goals in the most recent meeting with the Predators while his 74 points are three shy of his personal best, set over 82 games in 2016-17. Gagner has gotten acclimated fairly quickly to his new team by scoring in back-to-back contests while playing in just four games since being acquired from Vancouver on Feb. 15 for center Ryan Spooner.

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (36-23-5): Captain Roman Josi, who scored in a 3-0 win in Edmonton on Oct. 20, has 15 points (six goals, nine assists) in 12 games this month. Viktor Arvidsson and Ryan Johansen have slowed down following their respective sterling starts to February, with the former netting seven of his team-leading 26 goals in his first eight contests while the latter has answered a six-game point streak by being held off the scoresheet in four straight outings. Arvidsson scored in that first encounter with the Oilers while the latter had three assists in the more recent meeting.

    OVERTIME

    1. Nashville D Mattias Ekholm, who notched two assists in the first game against Edmonton this season, has just four points (one goal, three assists) in his last 12 outings.

    2. Oilers captain C Connor McDavid will sit out the second contest of a two-game suspension for his hit to the head of New York Islanders D Nick Leddy.

    3. Predators D P.K. Subban has one goal and two assists in two meetings with Edmonton this season.

    PREDICTION: Predators 3, Oilers 2

Florida Panthers vs. Colorado Avalanche Preview and Predictions 2019-02-25

NHL Predictions 24th February 2019 by Gracenote
      by Gracenote on 02/24/2019

The Colorado Avalanche have picked themselves off the mat after suffering an eight-game losing streak and are right back in the middle of the Western Conference wild-card race as they prepare to host the Florida Panthers on Monday night. The Avalanche have beaten three teams sitting in playoff position during a four-game winning streak after blanking Nashville 5-0 on Saturday and held the second wild card entering Sunday.

"We kind of looked ourselves in the mirror," Colorado's leading scorer Nathan MacKinnon told reporters after Saturday's triumph. "We had to make a decision if we wanted to push for the playoffs or be a lottery team. We haven't achieved our goal yet. Obviously we have 20 games left, but we're on the right track so it feels good." The Avalanche have won the last three matchups with the Panthers after earning a 5-2 victory at Florida on Dec. 6 and play four of their next five games against teams out of playoff position. The Panthers are one of those teams on the outside looking in, but have won four of five and veteran goalie Roberto Luongo has a chance to pass Ed Belfour (484) for third on the NHL's all-time wins list. "I don't know what else you could say about the guy," Florida center Vincent Trocheck told reporters of Luongo. "He's world-class through and through, most humble guy I've ever met. It's phenomenal to see him on a daily basis. It feels like he's breaking a new record every day."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, FS Florida, Altitude (Colorado)

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (27-25-8): Captain Aleksander Barkov has scored six times and set up five others while recording multiple points in a career-high four straight games and has 25 goals - three shy of his career best in 2015-16. Fellow forward Jonathan Huberdeau, who sits second behind Barkov (64) with 60 points, is also wielding a hot stick with four goal and four assists in the past four contests. Left wing Mike Hoffman tops the team with 26 goals and right wing Evgenii Dadonov boasts a five-game point streak in which he has scored twice.

ABOUT THE AVALANCHE (27-24-11): MacKinnon registered five of his team-leading 80 points in the last four games and fellow forward Mikko Rantanen is one point behind after notching one in each of the past three contests. Captain Gabriel Landeskog tops Colorado in goals with 33 after scoring in each of the last three games and posted six points in the past four outings to push his season total to 64. Center Carl Soderberg has played a big part during the winning streak while scoring three times and setting up four others over the last three contests.

      OVERTIME

      1. Florida F Frank Vatrano, who has a career-high 20 goals, signed a three-year $7.6 million extension Saturday.

      2. Colorado G Semyon Varlamov, who owns a .958 save percentage his last five games, was rested as Philipp Grubauer posted a shutout Saturday.

      3. Trocheck scored his sixth goal of the season Saturday to pull within three of 100 for his career.

      PREDICTION: Avalanche 3, Panthers 2

Anaheim Ducks vs. Vancouver Canucks Preview and Predictions 2019-02-25

NHL Predictions 24th February 2019 by Gracenote
        by Gracenote on 02/24/2019

The Vancouver Canucks and Anaheim Ducks continue to chase a Western Conference wild-card spot when they meet Monday in British Columbia. The clubs, though, will likely be sellers prior to Monday's trade deadline at noon PT with Vancouver losing to the Islanders 4-0 on Saturday for its third straight setback and Anaheim dropping 2-1 decisions at Calgary on Friday and Edmonton a night later.

"No one in this room's going to quit,'' Canucks goaltender Jacob Markstrom told reporters. "We've got to stay positive, keep pushing. We're going to get some wins." The Ducks are the lowest-scoring team in the league at 2.19 goals per game while taking the fewest shots (27.6) as their top goal scorer - Jakob Silfverberg with 16 - was tied for 100th in the NHL entering Sunday. "It's kind of one of those years," Anaheim general manager and interim coach Bob Murray, who fired Randy Carlyle on Feb. 10, told reporters. "It's kind of hard to keep pushing them, but if they keep working like this, they'll be rewarded in some way. If they keep working, they'll be fine." The Ducks won the first two of four meetings this season - each by one goal, including 1-0 on Feb. 13 behind 35 saves from Kevin Boyle in his second NHL game and first start.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, FS West (Anaheim), Sportsnet Pacific (Vancouver)

ABOUT THE DUCKS (24-29-9): Captain Ryan Getzlaf (team-high 39 points, which was tied for 108th in the league) missed the last two games with an upper-body injury while Carter Rowney (upper body) left Saturday's contest after scoring his fourth goal of the season and first since Jan. 4. Corey Perry has two of his 368 career goals along with two assists, and is a minus-8 in 11 games since returning from off-season knee surgery. Ryan Miller (6-3-1, 2.36 goals-against average, .929 save percentage) is expected to be in goal after Boyle made 19 saves Saturday, falling to 1-2-0, 1.66, .945.

ABOUT THE CANUCKS (26-28-8): Elias Pettersson paces the team - and all rookies by a wide margin - with 26 goals and 54 points but has been kept off the scoresheet in consecutive games for only the third time this season. Bo Horvat (46 points) and Brock Boeser (41) have scored 21 goals apiece with Horvat one shy of his career high set last season and Boeser on pace to surpass the 29 he scored in his rookie campaign of 2017-18. Alexander Edler (20 points, plus-3 in 38 games) returned to practice Saturday and could be in the lineup Monday for the first time since missing nine contests with a concussion.

        OVERTIME

        1. Vancouver is the only team that hasn't recorded a shutout this season.

        2. Anaheim D Cam Fowler (12 points, minus-12 in 39 games) played his 600th career contest Saturday while C Ryan Kesler (seven points, minus-19 in 54 games) is five shy of 1,000.

        3. The Canucks are 0-for-11 on the power play in the last three games while the Ducks are 8-for-8 on the penalty kill in their past four contests.

        PREDICTION: Canucks 3, Ducks 2

            # 6 CUPID BLUE TOGETHER 10/1

            # 5 LOGANS BUX 3/1

            # 2 TDZ LOUISIANAS WAVE 6/1

I think CUPID BLUE TOGETHER is a strong selection especially at 10/1. Should expect this equine to be right there at the finishing post versus these ponies. With a nice class rating average of 83, has one of the strongest class advantages in this group of animals. With a solid 64 average speed figure at the distance, seems well suited for today's contest. LOGANS BUX - Reason to like this mare as she has in the irons one of the best jocks using winning percentages over the last month. Is worth serious consideration and may be a bet - strong Equibase Speed Figs (57 average) at today's distance and surface recently. TDZ LOUISIANAS WAVE - Could beat this group given the 56 Equibase Speed Fig put up in her last outing. No strangers to the winner's circle, Roberts and Watson will most likely have this filly breaking away from the field.

JICAMA - That recent bullet 48.4 work shows that this mare is ready for a top effort today.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #5 SOROA (ML=2/1), #9 I YA SCREAM (ML=5/2), #6 STERLING RING (ML=6/1),

SOROA - Didn't finish in the money on December 20th at Gulfstream Park. Followed it up with another lackluster try. This probable favorite hasn't visited the track in awhile. No works since last race. I YA SCREAM - This filly recorded a fig in her last event which likely isn't good enough in today's event. STERLING RING - In this instance, this entrant's inability to close any ground in the last contest is a troubling signal.

KING KOA looks very strong to best this field. I like the jock on this gelding - very good chance to win the contest. With a solid 89 Equibase Speed Fig last time out, will unquestionably be a factor in this race. Should best this group here, showing quite good figs of late. HODOR - This one has been consistently running well lately. Could provide positive dividends based on very good recent Equibase Speed Figs with an average of 87. PUMPKIN STAR - Lately Pino has provided gamblers with a very good winning percentage with horses moving in dirt route races. Has respectable front-end speed and will probably fare soundly against this group of horses.

                    #1 DEPUTY'S COMMAND (ML=8/1)

OLDTIMERS VISION - We have lots of early speed with this mount. He could wire this field. I like to wager on this angle, a pony coming back off a strong contest within the last month. This gelding recorded a strong speed figure of 81 in his last affair. That speed figure should be good enough to win this time out. SOUTH AMERICAIN - This gelding is in excellent physical condition right now. Ran third last time out and comes back quickly. DEPUTY'S COMMAND - This pony coming off a nice try in the last month or so is a serious competitor in my opinion.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #7 OOPPER WALLAH (ML=3/1), #6 FORT CADY (ML=7/2), #5 JACK MORMON (ML=5/1),

OOPPER WALLAH - This horse doesn't have a conquering character. Very often finishes in the place and show spots. FORT CADY - Finished second in his most recent race with a run-of-the-mill speed fig. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to prove victorious after that in this field.

                    STRAIGHT WAGERS:

Scott "The Bulldog" Rickenbach NHL Game #69 Monday Free Pick OVER the total in Toronto Maple Leafs vs Buffalo Sabres @ 7:05 ET - The over is 6-1 in the last 7 meetings between these divisional foes. The Maple Leafs have won 5 of their last 6 home games and have scored an average of 4.7 goals per game in those 6 contests. The Sabres have allowed an average of 3.7 goals per game in their last 9 road games. Only 3 of those 9 Buffalo road games resulted in an under. Toronto is 7 for 20 on the power play in their last 6 games. The Leafs have allowed 3 power play goals on 10 chances for their opponents in their last 3 games. The Sabres are off a big 5-2 win over the Stanley Cup Champion Capitals and I look for the over to improve to 5-2 the last 7 times Buffalo is off a win. As for the Maple Leafs, only 6 of their 19 divisional games this season have resulted in an under. Free Pick OVER the total in Toronto
