          Inside the Paint - Thursday
          Chris David

Favorites finally came to play in the NBA last night as the ‘chalk’ went 8-2 straight up and 6-3-1 against the spread. The Heat and Bulls were the two underdogs to win outright and both of those teams were receiving attention from pro bettors. Including Wednesday’s results, the underdogs still hold an impressive 64-42-2 (60%) mark versus the number since the All-Star break.

Total bettors have watched the ‘under’ go 59-49 during this span and the low side has gone 18-5 since Monday.

Tonight’s TNT double-header features a pair of conference matchups and three of the four teams in action are coming off loses.

          Let’s break down the card.

Indiana (42-23 SU, 33-31-1 ATS) at Milwaukee (48-16 SU, 37-25-2 ATS)

May pundits wrote off the Pacers after they lost Victor Oladipo to a leg injury on Jan. 23 but the club weathered the blow and has turned things around. After dropping their first four games without the All-Star, Indiana has gone 9-5 and that includes a 105-96 win over Chicago on Tuesday as a 6 ½-point home favorite.

At the end of the day the Pacers are a .500 team without Oladipo and while they have enough experience and talent to surprise you a nightly basis, it’s hard to imagine them winning a best-of-seven series against in this year’s playoffs.

The Bucks started the second-half of their season with five straight wins but they enter this game off back-to-back losses. Milwaukee dropped a 115-11 decision at Utah last Saturday before collapsing two days later as a heavy road favorite (-13 ½) at Phoenix, which saw the team collapse in a 114-105 setback. Mike Budenholzer’s team was outscored 38-23 by in the final 12 minutes and the Suns cashed ridiculous money-line tickets that had odds listed as high as +750 (Bet $100 to win $750).

It was the first time this season that Milwaukee had dropped back-to-back games and one of the main reasons why the Bucks will go over their season Win Total (48 ½) with a win at home tonight.

These teams have played three times already this season and the Bucks have captured two of the first three encounters, which includes a 118-108 win on Oct. 19 as a four-point home favorite.

Fast forward to this matchup and the spread has more than doubled with Milwaukee opening as a 10-point favorite over Indiana. VegasInisder.com NBA expert Tony Mejia weighs in on the high number for Thursday’s game.

He said, “With sixth man Domantas Sabonis out the past few games and starting center Myles Turner having been out before that, the Pacers have had their typical frontcourt rotation in place only once since the All-Star break ended. Kyle O’Quinn has picked up more minutes and performed reasonably well, but considering the Bucks bring the most stacked rotation of big men to the table with Giannis Antetokounmpo, Brook Lopez, Nikola Mirotic and Ersan Ilyasova all available, it’s no surprise Indiana opened as a double-digit underdog for the first time this season. The question becomes, is it too much?”

“The Pacers had their full frontcourt rotation in place at home and didn’t have to deal with Mirotic but still ran out of gas at home on Feb. 13, losing 106-97. The Bucks have already seen Wes Matthews in Victor Oladipo’s spot and will be back at Fiserv Forum for the first time since Feb. 23, adding to their advantages. Still, laying so many points against a division rival may be a case of Milwaukee being overvalued considering it has failed to cover its past two double-digit spreads.”

At home, the Bucks have gone 25-5 straight up and 17-13 against the spread which includes two wins since the All-Star break. Milwaukee failed to cover in both of those games and they are 1-5 ATS in their last six played at the Fiserv Forum. As double-digit home favorites this season, the Bucks have gone 12-1 SU and 8-5-1 ATS but as Mejia noted, they’ve burned bettors in their last two spots in this role.

Indiana has been decent on the road (17-14 SU, 13-17-1 ATS) this season but the club is just 1-4 both SU and ATS in their last five trips to Milwaukee.

The ‘under’ is on a 7-2 run in the last nine home games for the Bucks, plus Indiana has watched the ‘under’ go 5-2 in its last seven away games. This series is on a 7-2 ‘under’ run and these teams have never seen a total listed in the 220s during this span.

Oklahoma City (39-25 SU, 33-31 ATS) at Portland (39-25 SU, 37-25-1 ATS)

The Thunder and Trail Blazers square off tonight from the Great Northwest and this would be the 4-5 matchup in the Western Conference if the season ended today. This isn’t an easy game to handicap because Portland is returning from a long successful road trip while the Thunder are in terrible form. However, OKC has won and covered all three meetings against Portland this season and will be going for the 4-0 sweep tonight.

Mejia breaks down the fourth and final encounter. “Oklahoma City has failed to cover in its last eight games, losing six outright. The Thunder got Paul George back from a three-game absence on Tuesday due to a shoulder issue but failed to beat Minnesota and saw him shoot 8-for-25, which is disappointing since he took a break after shooting a combined 11-for-43 in losses Sacramento and Denver. He’s not right, which combined with the prolonged shooting slump Dennis Schroder (33-for-105) is on since the All-Star break ended, leaves Russell Westbrook back in the place where he’s having to do too much, which is how come he’s shot the ball 20 or more times in six of eight games during this stretch,” said Mejia.

He added, “Westbrook is shooting 40 percent in OKC’s three wins over the Trail Blazers, averaging 27 points, 11 rebounds and 10.7 assists. Portland hasn’t been in a favorite’s role against Oklahoma City much over the last three seasons – the 3.5 points it opened laying is the second-biggest number in that span – but you can understand why given the Thunder’s current form and the fact the Blazers had won eight of their last nine at home in the series entering this season.”

The Thunder have dropped their last two games as an underdog but they were 8-2 in their previous 10 when catching points.

Portland went 5-2 on the seven-game road trip after the break and could’ve easily been 7-0 if it wasn’t for a close call in Toronto (119-117) and a collapse at Memphis (120-111) this past Tuesday. Winning on the road hasn’t been the staple of success for Portland, rather its dominant mark (24-8 SU, 21-11 ATS) at the Moda Center.

Since the New Year, the club has gone 10-2 both SU and ATS at home. One of the losses did come to OKC, a 111-109 decision on Jan. 4 while the other setback was a bit of a stunner in early February to the Heat (118-108).

Portland started out the season as a solid ‘under’ look at home but those results have balanced out and the ‘over’ is 8-0-1 in its last nine home games. OKC is 19-14 to the ‘under’ on the road and it comes into this game on a 5-1 run to the low side but Paul George sat out three of those contests. Defensively, the Thunder have allowed 121, 116 and 131 points in three road games since the break and that’s another reason why tonight’s total is hovering between 233 and 234 points.

After this game, the Thunder will meet the Clippers at the Staples Center for a back-to-back spot on Friday while Portland entertains Phoenix on Saturday.

                        Beantown Bonanza

The Boston Bruins are rolling, going unbeaten in regulation across the past 17 contests. They have won five of the past six games in the Eastern Conference, while posting a 6-0 record in each of the past six outings against teams with a losing overall record. They have pushed aside the opposition in 47 of the past 65 games at home. They're also an impressive 44-18 across the past 62 as a home favorite. The Panthers are on a five-game skid, and they are just 19-41 in the past 60 games as a road underdog. They have lost nine of the past 12 games on the road overall, too, while losing four straight against teams with a winning overall mark.

TD Garden has been a house of horrors for the Florida Panthers, as they have won just five times in the past 21 trips to the Bay State. They're also just 9-25 in the past 34 meetings in this series. In addition, the home team has connected in five of the past six, while the favorite has cashed in 28 of the past 41 meetings overall.

                        Looking Ahead

                        Thursday, March 7

                        Columbus at Pittsburgh:
The Blue Jackets head east on Interstate 70 (OK, they probably took the short flight) to meet the Penguins in the Steel City. Columbus has posted five wins in the past six road outings, while going 10-3 in the past 13 games against the Metropolitan Division. All of that is well and good, but they're just 4-18 in their past 22 against the Pens, while going 10-25 in the past 35 meetings overall. The home team has also cashed in 11 of the past 15 games overall. The Penguins have won six of the past eight against the Eastern Conference, and they're hitting at a .701 clip (116-50) across the past 166 games at home.

                        Calgary at Arizona:
How many bettors and hockey fans envisioned that a Calgary-Arizona battle would be an important game in March with Western Conference playoff implications? The Flames have cashed in four of the past five games on the road, while going 7-3 in the past 10 games overall. Arizona is equally hot, cashing in six of the past seven games overall, while cashing in four of the past five against Western Conference clubs. Calgary has owned this series of late, winning 10 of the past 13 meetings overall, with five wins in the past six trips to the desert. The 'over' is also a frequent occurrence, hitting in five of the past six overall, and four straight meetings in Glendale.

                        Montreal at San Jose:
The Canadiens have rolled to seven straight victories against the Pacific Division, and they're 6-1 in the past seven against Western Conference foes. The Sharks have hit in nine of their past 11 games as a home favorite, and they're 14-5 in the past 19 overall when favored. Theyh ave won 20 of their past 28 games overall, too. The Sharks have dominated this series, winning 11 straight home meetings and 17 of the past 22 meetings overall. The home team is also 14-5 in the past 19 meetings overall in the series.

                        Friday, March 8

                        Winnipeg at Carolina:
The Jets roll into Raleigh looking to get untracked and cool off one of the hotter teams in the NHL. The Jets have connected in five of their past seven as an underdog, and they're 7-2 in the past nine against Metropolitan Division clubs. Winnipeg has owned this series of late, winning six of the past eight trips to Raleigh, while cashing in four of the past five. However, the favorite is also 6-0 in the past six meetings, with the 'under' hitting in each of the past six in Raleigh.

                        Montreal at Anaheim:
The home team has cashed in eight straight meetings in this series, with Anaheim winning each of their past four home battle against the Canadiens. Montreal will be playing in their third game in four days, and they're 9-2 in the past 11 in the third game of a 3-in-4 situation. With less rest they seem to get stronger. The Habs are also 4-1 in the past five against teams with a losing record. The Ducks are 3-11 in the past 14 home games, and just 7-26 in the past 33 overall. They have also struggled with an 0-9 mark in the past nine against the Atlantic Division, and 3-13 in the past 16 against the Eastern Conference.

                        Saturday, March 9

                        Ottawa at Boston:
The Bruins have won seven straight meetings in this rivalry since the start of the 2017-18 regular season, including each of the past three meetings at home. The 'over' has also cashed in each of the past three meetings in Boston during the same span. The spread in this one won't likely be as high as -400 when the Tampa Bay Lightning routed the Sens 5-1 last week, but you can expect a line of around -350. Boston has won the past three at home vs. Ottawa by a combined socre of 16-6, with no game closer than three goals, so those interested in puck line (-1 1/2) bets will want to pay close attention.

                        Toronto at Edmonton:
The Oilers will be looking to avenge a 6-2 loss in Toronto on Feb. 27, and that is actually their last loss heading into play on Thursday. Mikko Koskinen has backstopped the Oil in 11 straight contests, as Edmonton continues to ride the Finn. The Leafs have won five straight meetings in this series, including each of the past two road games. Edmonton's last win in the series came on Feb. 11, 2016.

                        Vegas at Vancouver:
This will be the eighth meeting between the Golden Knights and Canucks since Vegas came into the league. Vegas has won six of the previous seven in the series, and Vancouver has never beaten Vegas in regulation. In the previous three meetings in the Pacific Northwest, Vegas has won by a combined score of 14-9, hitting the 'over' in each of the three battles. Vegas has scored at least four goals in all three trips to Vancouver, and they're averaging 4.2 goals per game in seven meetings all-time vs. the Canucks.

                        Sunday, March 10

                        Vegas at Calgary:
The home team has won six consecutive meetings in this series, and Calgary has scored seven goals in each of their past two meetings with the Golden Knights in the Saddledome. The 'over' has cashed in each of the three battles in Calgary, too. The past two battles in this series, both in Vegas, resulted in a total of five goals and two 'under' results. So will we get a ton of offense like usual in Calgary, or a low-scoring game like we saw in the past two battles at T-Mobile Arena?

Ovechkin stymied by the Devils, and this week's NHL odds and best bets
                          Monty Andrews

Few teams can say they've given Alex Ovechkin trouble over the years – but of his most frequent foes, the New Jersey Devils have done the best job of containing him as they visit the defending-champion Washington Capitals in a Friday night showdown. Ovie's tilt with the Devils highlights a fun weekend of NHL action, which includes the Anaheim Ducks looking to extend a run of home-ice dominance in their recent series with the Montreal Canadiens, and the Toronto Maple Leafs set to humble the Edmonton Oilers yet again. Here are the top matchups, betting trends and tips to monitor entering another full slate of hockey action:

                          Stymied by the Devils

Any team that can hold Ovechkin below half a goal per game on average is going to be the envy of the rest of the league – and that's just where the Devils find themselves as they visit Ovechkin and the Capitals on Friday. Ovechkin's 25 goals in 51 career games vs. New Jersey are easily the fewest of any team he's faced at least 50 times. Ovie scored his league-leading 46th goal of the season in Wednesday's 5-3 win over Philadelphia, and his recent scoring exploits have helped the surging Capitals win seven of eight while surpassing the total in four of their previous six games.

                          Road Rash

The Montreal Canadiens and Anaheim Ducks have been consistent when it comes to protecting home-ice advantage as the teams renew hostilities Friday night at Honda Center. The home team has prevailed in eight consecutive meetings dating all the way back to the latter stages of the 2014-15 season. And the previous four games haven't been particularly close, with the home side winning each won by at least three goals. The Ducks desperately want to keep that trend alive, as they find themselves with a cumulative net value of -9.35 units through Wednesday's action.

                          An Unbe-Leaf-able Run

The Edmonton Oilers might have the superior franchise center compared to the Toronto Maple Leafs, but their Eastern rivals are in much better position as a team as the two Canadian franchises square off Saturday night at Rogers Place. Not only are the Leafs one of the favorites to win the Stanley Cup (while the Oilers most certainly are not), they've dominated the head-to-head series with Edmonton, winning five in a row and 12 of the past 14 meetings. But player prop fans should still consider Connor McDavid, who has four goals and five assists in six games against his hometown team.

                          Close Calls

The Detroit Red Wings and Florida Panthers have a pair of lengthy trends on the line as they tangle Sunday night at BB&T Center in Sunrise. The game won't hold much interest for casual hockey fans, with both teams well out of the Eastern Conference playoff picture. But it's an intriguing matchup for bettors, considering that the road team has won each of the previous three meetings and eight of the past 10 overall, most recently a 4-3 Florida win in Detroit last New Year's Day. Also notable: these teams have played a whole bunch of close games lately, with four straight games and eight of nine decided by a goal.

                          Goalie Profile

                          Marc-Andre Fleury, Vegas Golden Knights

He's the one goaltender opposing teams would love to avoid come playoff time – and he's playing some of his best hockey of the season. Fleury has had a sensational start to the month of March, winning all three of his starts while allowing just one total goal in those victories. Fleury blanked the Ducks and Vancouver Canucks to kick off the month, then turned aside 33 of 34 shots in a 2-1 victory over the conference-leading Calgary Flames in his previous outing. The 34-year-old leads the league in wins (33) and shutouts (seven), and the Golden Knights are a red-hot 5-1 to the under in his last six starts.

                          Injury Update

                          Robin Lehner, New York Islanders

Islanders fans are holding their breath after Lehner left in the third period of his team's 5-4 shootout win over the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night. Lehner was forced from the game after colliding with Ottawa forward Brady Tkachuk; head coach Barry Trotz didn't offer an update on his starting netminder's status, but the team did recall Christopher Gibson on an emergency basis in case Lehner isn't able to play in Thursday's rematch. Lehner has been one of the top goaltenders in the league to date, sitting tied for second in the league in goals-against average (2.19) and fifth in save percentage (.927).

                          Hat Trick Trends

Road favorites have been the most automatic play of any straight-up betting outcome over the previous seven days worth of games, having gone 12-3-2 – good for a 70.6-percent success rate. Road faves have been a slightly better option (63.2 percent) than home faves (62.1) over the past 30 days, though home faves still own a season-long edge (58.4 to 56.4).

Totals play has been split right down the middle, with 44 games over the previous seven days producing 22 overs and 22 Unders. The under has an ever-so-slight 108-106 edge in the last month's worth of contests and is now up to a 50.6-percent advantage for the season – thanks in no small part to oddsmakers rolling out the 6.5s a lot more than they did early in the year.

The most valuable road team in the league from a betting perspective might surprise you – unless, of course, you've been wagering on the Arizona Coyotes for most of the season. The desert dogs are up to a whopping +9.92 units on the road this season, slightly ahead of the New York Islanders (+9.77); Columbus (+8.73) rounds out the top three.

I'll take my chances here with the Hawkeyes covering as a big 8-point road dog against the Badgers. I just feel there's too much value with Iowa at this price. Sure the Hawkeyes haven't looked good in their last two games, but we know this is a quality team and is not just capable of keeping it close against Wisconsin, but winning the game outright.
Not only has Iowa lost their last two, they have failed to cover 6 straight. No question that is playing into the inflated number. As is this being senior night for Wisconsin. What is getting over looked is the Badgers have not been equally bad against the number, going 1-5 ATS in their last 6.
The biggest thing for me is the first meeting between these two. Badgers won 72-66 at Iowa as a 2-point favorite. They only won by 6, despite them shooting 48% and holding the Hawkeyes to 39% shooting. Chances are Wisconsin fails to shoot as good as they did in the first meeting and chances are Iowa shoots better. Give me the Hawkeyes +8!

The total in this AAC encounter is tumbling like, well, like UConn's offense. The total is down three points to 140.5 and since losing leading scorer Jalen Adams, in the Huskies last five games they have averaged a measly 61 PPG. With UConn 11-4 UNDER in conference play and 7-1 UNDER in those games when at home, it sure seems this is UNDER or pass.
