Florida State Seminoles vs. Gonzaga Bulldogs Preview and Predictions 03-28-2019 in NCAAB

Florida State ended Gonzaga's season with a 75-60 upset in the Sweet 16 in Los Angeles during its surprising run to the Elite Eight last March. And in what may be a case of be careful what you wish for, the top-seeded Zags have said they are looking forward to a rematch with the fourth-seeded Seminoles in the West Region semifinals on Thursday night in Anaheim, Calif.

"Absolutely - 100 percent," Gonzaga coach Mark Few told reporters when asked if he was looking forward to the rematch with the Seminoles. "We wouldn't want it any other way. It just so happened that we got Florida State again in the Sweet 16 and we have a special itch to take care of against them." Florida State has won eight of its last nine games, including a 90-62 thumping of Murray State and Ja Morant in the second round Saturday. The lone defeat in that stretch came in the ACC tournament final against Duke 73-63, and the Seminoles also lost to the Blue Devils 80-78 on a Cam Reddish 3-pointer with 0.8 seconds to go during the regular season. "I thought they were really, really under-seeded," Few said of the Seminoles after Gonzaga's 83-71 second-round victory over No. 9 seed Baylor. "They had Duke beat at their place and played great all year. I thought they'd end up on the two line and to see them at four; that's kind of tough. You have to beat really good teams to advance in this thing. So we knew we were going to have to play somebody really good, and Florida State is no doubt that."

TV: 7:09 p.m. ET, CBS LINE: Check Intertops for the latest line

ABOUT FLORIDA STATE (29-7): The Seminoles will be without senior forward Phil Cofer (7.4 points), who besides battling a foot injury also lost his father, former NFL linebacker Mike Cofer, to a lengthy illness just before the win over the Racers. "I think that's why you saw our guys so focused," coach Leonard Hamilton told reporters. "I think the night was in response to the respect we had for Murray State, but also the respect we had for Mr. Cofer. And we wanted him to be happy with the way we performed tonight." Sophomore forward Mfiondu Kabengele, who had 22 points, seven rebounds and three blocks in the win over Murray State, leads the team in scoring (13.4) with 6-7 guard Terance Mann also averaging in double figures (11.6) and grabbing a team best 6.5 rebounds per game.

ABOUT GONZAGA (32-3): The Zags have three likely first-round NBA picks up front including two junior forwards - 6-8 Rui Hachimura, the West Coast Conference Player of the Year, and 6-8 Brandon Clarke, the WCC Defensive Player of the Year - who are likely lottery picks in June. Hachimura leads the team in scoring (19.7) and shoots 46.9 percent from 3-point range while Clarke is second in scoring (17.0), tops the team in rebounding (8.4) and leads the NCAA with 110 blocks. Killian Tillie, a 6-10 junior forward who missed last year's loss to Florida State but will play this time around despite missing a good chunk of the season with ankle and foot injuries, is shooting 42.9 percent from 3-point range and averaging 6.7 points off the bench, while guards Zach Norvell Jr. (15.1) and Josh Perkins (10.8) also average in double digits scoring.

    TIP-INS

    1. Gonzaga leads the nation in scoring offense (88.6), field goal percentage (53.2), scoring margin (23.8) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.76).

    2. Clarke had 36 points in the win over Baylor, breaking the school NCAA Tournament record of 35 points held by Adam Morrison.

    3. Perkins needs two assists to break the school single-season record of 225. The Zags are 70-8 when he records at least five assists in a game.

PREDICTION: Gonzaga 82, Florida State 76

Purdue Boilermakers vs. Tennessee Volunteers Preview and Predictions 03-28-2019 in NCAAB

Purdue has played two very strong games so far in the NCAA Tournament, while Tennessee logged two very impressive halves. The second-seeded Volunteers hope to put together a full 60 minutes Thursday when they take on the third-seeded Boilermakers in a South Region semifinal affair in Louisville, Ky.

Purdue is 0-4 in the Sweet 16 under coach Matt Painter, including losses in each of the last two seasons, but this year's squad appears to have some serious momentum entering the second weekend. The Boilermakers held Old Dominion to 26.9 percent shooting in an opening-round 61-48 triumph before crushing defending champion Villanova 87-61 in the Round of 32. Tennessee has dominated the first half in each of its first two games, leading Colgate 42-30 and Iowa 49-28 at the break before barely escaping with a victory each time. Grant Williams scored six of his 19 points in overtime to outlast the Hawkeyes, while Purdue has a star junior of its own in Carsen Edwards, who scored a career-high 42 points against the Wildcats.

TV: 7:29 p.m. ET, TBS LINE: Check Intertops for the latest line

ABOUT PURDUE (25-9): The Boilermakers lost in overtime to the Volunteers 78-75 in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament at the beginning of last season and, with a veteran squad, Painter believes that defeat still carries some lessons today. "They dominated us," Painter told reporters this week. "I thought they were tougher, they were quicker to the basketball than we were, and we had to settle into the game. We took too many quick shots, and they were just more the aggressor, even though we were in position to win the game late in that second half. It was one of those games you can reference as a coach a lot and say, 'Learn from how physical they were and how aggressive they were, and then try to be like that.'" Aside from Edwards, who made nine 3-pointers against Villanova, Purdue also got a lift from Matt Haarms (18 points, nine rebounds) and Ryan Cline (four 3-pointers) in its decisive win.

ABOUT TENNESSEE (31-5): The Volunteers have allowed 84, 76, 78, 84, 70 and 77 points over their last six games and will really be tested by Edwards as they aim for a crisper defensive effort. "You're going to have to work as hard as you can each possession and you're going to have to defend because you have a guy that can go for 40 or 50 points on you and put a lot of pressure on you," coach Rick Barnes told reporters, adding that Lamonte Turner will start on Edwards defensively. Williams and Admiral Schofield had 19 points apiece against Iowa, while Tennessee would love to replicate its rebounding (41-34) and its foul shooting (19-of-23) performances from that game when it takes the court on Thursday.

      TIP-INS

      1. The winner of this game will face either top-seeded Virginia or No. 12 seed Oregon for a spot in the Final Four.

      2. So far in the tournament, Turner has nine assists and only one turnover in 76 minutes.

      3. Haarms has made at least two-thirds of his shots in 15 of his last 19 games.

      PREDICTION: Tennessee 82, Purdue 74

Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Michigan Wolverines Preview and Predictions 03-28-2019 in NCAAB

Second-seeded Michigan takes on No. 3 seed Texas Tech in the West Region semifinal in Anaheim, Calif. on Thursday in a battle of two of the top defensive teams in the country. Michigan, who is ranked second nationally in scoring defense (58.2), took care of business against Montana (74-55) and Florida (64-49) to advance past the opening weekend for the third consecutive year while notching 30 wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history.

"I'm extremely blessed to be in this position and to be part of a team that goes to three straight Sweet 16s," Wolverines point guard Zavier Simpson told reporters. "Our defense was high, but we're going to have to crank it even higher to get to the Elite 8." The Red Raiders flexed their defensive muscles in the opening two rounds as they knocked off Northern Kentucky 72-57 before shutting down high-flying Buffalo 78-58 to advance to the Sweet 16 for the second time in as many years. Texas Tech, which is ranked third nationally in scoring defense (59.2), has won 13 of their last 15 games and hopes to take down a Big Ten opponent in the Sweet 16 for the second consecutive year after beating Purdue 78-65 in 2018. "We're trying to make a statement in this tournament, not just win a game or two," Texas Tech coach Chris Beard told reporters. "These guys have continued to keep a chip on their shoulder and realize we can do a lot of things if we play as a team."

TV: 9:39 p.m. ET, CBS LINE: Check Intertops for the latest line

ABOUT TEXAS TECH (28-6): Sophomore sensation Jarrett Culver, who is soaring up NBA draft boards, led the way with 16 points to go along with 10 rebounds in the win against Buffalo to record his fifth double-double of the season. Norense Odiase added a season-high 14 points and set a new program record for the most rebounds in an NCAA Tournament game with 15 as the Red Raiders held the Bulls almost 27 points below their season average. Matt Mooney and Davide Moretti each scored 11 points and Tariq Owens finished with 10 as Texas Tech sets its sights on taking down Michigan for the third straight time, although the teams haven't met since 1983.

ABOUT MICHIGAN (30-6): Jordan Poole knocked down four 3-pointers en route to a team-high 19 points to go along with four rebounds as the Wolverines held Florida to 34.5 percent shooting from the field. Isaiah Livers was the only other Wolverine to finish in double figures as he added 10 points in a reserve role while Simpson flirted with his second triple-double of the season by contributing nine points, nine rebounds and nine assists against the Gators. Charles Matthews and Big Ten Freshman of the Year Iggy Brazdeikis, who combined for 36 points and 17 rebounds in win against Montana, were limited to 14 points on 6-of-18 shooting from the field.

        TIP-INS

        1. The winner will face top-seeded Gonzaga or No. 4 seed Florida State in the Elite 8 on Saturday.

        2. Simpson is averaging 9.3 assists over his last eight games.

        3. Texas Tech has won 21 games by double digits this season.

PREDICTION: Michigan 58, Texas Tech 55

Oregon Ducks vs. Virginia Cavaliers Preview and Predictions 03-28-2019 in NCAAB

Top-seeded Virginia extinguished some demons last weekend and the Cavaliers now set their sights on reaching the Elite Eight when they take on No. 12 seed Oregon in the South Region semifinals Thursday night in Louisville, Ky. Virginia, which became the first No. 1 seed in history to lose to a 16th seed in the NCAA Tournament last season, rallied from 14 points down to beat Gardner-Webb in the opening round and handled Oklahoma 63-51 in the second round Sunday.

"Another week, more opportunity to play with the teammates you love, for the coaches you love, and for the fans you love," Cavaliers junior point guard Ty Jerome told reporters. "But we're nowhere near relaxed, nowhere near satisfied. We're not even close to our end goal." Virginia leads the nation in scoring defense (55.0) and will need another strong effort against the red-hot Ducks, who have won 10 straight contests after knocking off fifth-seeded Wisconsin by 18 points in the first round and rolling past No. 13 seed UC Irvine 73-54 in the second on Sunday. Senior guard Ehab Amin, who is scoring 5.8 per game overall, drained all four of his 3-point attempts to score 12 while sophomore forward Kenny Wooten had 11 points, eight rebounds and seven blocks in the win over UC Irvine to support the top performers for Oregon. "I think that's the key to our run of success lately, just everybody knowing their role and knowing they gotta stay ready and be ready once their name is called," Amin told reporters. ". ... I can't emphasize enough how fun it is to play with my teammates and brothers right now."

TV: 9:59 p.m. ET, TBS LINE: Check Intertops for the latest line

ABOUT OREGON (25-12): Payton Pritchard is the only remaining player from the Ducks' Final Four team in 2017 and the junior guard is averaging 19.0 points the last five games to push his season mark to 13.0 while topping the team in assists (4.6). Freshman forward Louis King has also raised his production level to take over the team lead in scoring (13.4) after draining 15-of-27 from the field the past three contests. Senior forward Paul White is the third and final player averaging in double figures scoring for the Ducks (10.6) after totaling 50 points the past four contests.

ABOUT VIRGINIA (31-3): The Cavaliers registered a pair of double-digit wins last weekend despite rough shooting performances from second-leading scorer Kyle Guy (15.1), who went 4-of-23 from the field and 1-of-15 from 3-point range. "It just shows how deep we are, how much we want to win, and how much none of us really care about scoring," Guy told reporters. "We just care about winning." Sophomore swingman De'Andre Hunter leads the team in scoring (15.2) after averaging 16.5 last weekend and Jerome contributes 13 points per game along with a team-best 5.3 assists.

          TIP-INS

          1. Virginia junior F Mamadi Diakite is averaging 15.5 points and nine rebounds in the NCAA Tournament - well above his season marks of 7.4 and 4.0, respectively

          2. The Ducks are allowing an average of 54.2 points and 34.9 percent shooting overall (23.0 from 3-point range) during their 10-game winning streak.

          3. The teams have met twice in their history with the Cavaliers winning both by a combined 28 points in 2010 and 2011.

          PREDICTION: Virginia 70, Oregon 60
