New York Mets vs. Washington Nationals Preview and Predictions 03-31-2019 in MLB
The New York Mets aim to open 3-0 for the first time in six years when they wrap up a three-game series at the Washington Nationals on Sunday. After opening the season with a tidy 2-0 win Thursday afternoon, the Mets won an 11-8 slugfest over the Nationals on Saturday behind four hits and two RBIs by left fielder Jeff McNeil.
Catcher Wilson Ramos chipped in two hits, two RBIs and three runs scored while Pete Alonso doubled twice and singled once for New York, which scored seven runs over the final two innings before surviving a Washington rally in the ninth. Juan Soto went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Ryan Zimmerman drove in three runs in the ninth with a double to pace the Nationals' attack. Washington will try to break into the win column Sunday behind newcomer Patrick Corbin, who signed a $140 million deal this offseason. Righty Zack Wheeler gets the nod for New York.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Zack Wheeler (2018: 12-7, 3.31 ERA) vs. Nationals LH Patrick Corbin (11-7, 3.15)
Hampered by injuries for much of his career, Wheeler put in his best campaign in 2018 while making 29 starts and ranking second on the team in victories. The former first-round pick was 10-1 with a 2.21 ERA over the final three months of the season and he defeated Washington twice in three matchups. Wheeler, who posted a 4.80 ERA in five spring training starts, will be wary of first baseman Zimmerman, who is 8-for-23 with two homers against him.
Corbin earned his big deal after a spectacular 2018 in which he struck out 246 batters in 200 innings while holding opponents to a .218 average. However, he was 0-1 with a 5.56 ERA in two matchups with the Mets last year and is just 1-4 lifetime. The 29-year-old, who gave up 15 runs in 24 innings this spring, has a 4.80 ERA in three career starts at Nationals Park.
WALK-OFFS
1. Mets closer RHP Edwin Diaz has notched a save in both victories, using one pitch to retire his only batter in Saturday's win.
2. Nationals RHP Trevor Rosenthal, pitching for the first time since 2017 due to Tommy John surgery, gave up four runs without retiring a batter Saturday.
3. New York CF Brandon Nimmo is 0-for-7 with six strikeouts through the first two games.
PREDICTION: Nationals 5, Mets 4
