Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Tampa Bay Lightning Preview and Predictions 04-10-2019 in NHL

The Tampa Bay Lightning made history in the regular season with an NHL record-matching 62 wins and hope to continue their dominance in the playoffs when they host the Columbus Blue Jackets for Game 1 of their Eastern Conference first-round series Wednesday. The Lightning have won all six games against the Blue Jackets the last two seasons, outscoring them 17-3 in three victories in 2018-19, but they know little of that matters now.

"We haven't played them in quite some time, and they've got so many more players now," Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper told reporters. "Are they a more talented group? There's no question. They've added some really good players. ... The one thing I do know is they're playing probably their best hockey of the year in this latter part of the season." The Lightning boast three 40-goal scorers, including the NHL's leading point producer in right wing Nikita Kucherov (128), and are expecting to have Norris Trophy winner Victor Hedman back in the lineup after he missed the last four games with an upper-body injury. The Blue Jackets have yet to win a playoff series in their history, but coach John Tortorella took Tampa Bay to the Stanley Cup in 2004 and they went 7-1-0 in their last eight games to make the postseason for the third straight year. "We are a team that feels really confident now that we've gotten in, with everything we've faced and gone through," Columbus captain Nick Foligno told reporters. "We've grown as a team together. I think you're just seeing this become more of a team. We're excited about putting that to use in the playoffs."

TV: 7 p.m. ET, USA, Sportsnet360, TVA; FS Ohio (Columbus), FS Sun (Tampa Bay)

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS: Center Matt Duchene and left wing Ryan Dzingel did not make major impacts on the scoresheet with 12 points each since being acquired at the trade deadline, but supported a capable offense. Left wing Artemi Panarin may be leaving as an unrestricted free agent after the playoffs, but he provided Columbus with a career-high 87 points, and right wing Cam Atkinson finished with a career-best 41 goals. The Blue Jackets are without two top-seven defensemen in Ryan Murray and Adam McQuaid because of upper-body injuries, but Seth Jones and Zach Werenski led the blue line with 90 points combined.

ABOUT THE LIGHTNING: Andrei Vasilevskiy led the league with 39 wins despite missing a month to injury and the 24-year-old has performed well in the playoffs, going 15-11 with a 2.68 goals-against average and .919 save percentage. Captain Steven Stamkos led the team with 45 goals - his most since scoring 60 in 2011-12 - while center Brayden Point and Kucherov added 41 apiece as Tampa Bay tallied 30 more times than any other team in the league. Hedman practiced the last two days while fellow defenseman Anton Stralman, who played two of the final three games after missing 12 with a lower-body injury, sat out both and is questionable.

    OVERTIME

    1. Columbus G Sergei Bobrovsky has won at least 37 games in three straight seasons, but is 5-14 with an .891 save percentage in 24 career playoff games.

    2. Tampa Bay C Anthony Cirelli led all forwards in the league in short-handed playing time (222:39) and was tied for second with five short-handed goals.

    3. Blue Jackets RW Oliver Bjorkstrand finished the regular season by scoring nine goals and setting up two others in his last 10 contests.

PREDICTION: Lightning 4, Blue Jackets 1

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. New York Islanders Preview and Predictions 04-10-2019 in NHL

Stellar goaltending and a worst-to-first defense that allowed 100 fewer goals than last season have the New York Islanders in position to enjoy home-ice advantage in a playoff series for the first time since 1988. The Islanders look to gain the upper hand on Wednesday in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference first-round set against the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins, who have secured a playoff berth in 13 consecutive seasons.

New York's Robin Lehner and Thomas Greiss rank in the NHL's top five in both goals-against average and save percentage this season and combined for a league-best 11 shutouts, with coach Barry Trotz telling reporters that he has the utmost confidence in both goaltenders. "They've pushed each other and I can't make a bad decision," said Trotz, who hasn't revealed his hand as to the identity of his starter for Game 1 at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The man behind the mask will have to keep tabs on Pittsburgh's superstar captain Sidney Crosby (team-high 65 assists, 100 points), who has tormented the Islanders during his decorated NHL career. The two-time Hart Trophy recipient upped his career total to 113 points (36 goals, 77 assists) after collecting a goal and two assists in Pittsburgh's 6-2 road romp over New York on Dec. 6.

      TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, AT&T SportsNet-Pittsburgh, CBC, TVAS2, MSG-Plus (New York)

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (44-26-12): Although Jake Guentzel scored a career-high 40 goals this season, the 24-year-old set up five tallies in the season series against the Islanders. Former Hart Trophy recipient Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel struggled at times during the campaign, but both have totaled 54 points in the postseason over the last three years. Matt Murray, who helped Pittsburgh win two Stanley Cups during that time frame, surrendered four goals on nine shots in a 6-3 setback to New York on Oct. 30 before making 24 saves against the Islanders in a 3-2 shootout loss on Nov. 1.

ABOUT THE ISLANDERS (48-27-7): Reigning Calder Memorial Trophy recipient Mathew Barzal registered three of his club-best 44 assists and 62 points versus Pittsburgh while captain Anders Lee had two of his team-leading 28 goals in the season series. "They (the Penguins) have a lot of pieces, but we finished second for a reason," the 21-year-old Barzal said. "This group battles. We have a lot of competitors on this team, we've practiced hard all year and have proven ourselves and beat good teams all year. We're excited for the opportunity." Jordan Eberle scored twice in the first encounter versus Pittsburgh while Brock Nelson had three (two goals, one assist) of his career-high 53 points against the Penguins.

      OVERTIME

      1. Pittsburgh's fifth-ranked power play converted on 24.6 percent of its opportunities while New York went 3-for-50 with the man advantage in its final 22 games.

      2. Islanders D Adam Pelech had a team-high plus-22 rating.

      3. Pittsburgh emerged victorious in the last postseason meeting with New York, defeating the Islanders in six games during their 2013 Eastern Conference quarterfinal series.

      PREDICTION: Penguins 3, Islanders 2

St. Louis Blues vs. Winnipeg Jets Preview and Predictions 04-10-2019 in NHL

The St. Louis Blues are one of the hottest teams in hockey entering the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and head to Winnipeg for Game 1 on Wednesday against a Jets squad that stumbled through the past three months. The Jets, who led the Western Conference in early January, went 16-16-3 since Jan. 19 and lost the Central Division title to Nashville in the final two weeks while the Blues went 30-10-5 since Jan. 1 to tie Winnipeg in the standings with 99 points.

St. Louis' fortunes turned around with the emergence of goaltender Jordan Binnington, who did not make his first NHL start until Jan. 7 and posted a .927 save percentage. Forward Vladimir Tarasenko scored 17 of his 33 goals in the final 29 games for the Blues, who went 38-19-6 after interim coach Craig Berube took over for Mike Yeo following 19 games. The Jets were a popular Stanley Cup favorite in preseason after reaching the conference finals last spring, but enter the postseason with losses in five of their final seven contests. Injuries in the second half added to Winnipeg's struggles, but Dustin Byfuglien returned before the regular season concluded and fellow defenseman Josh Morrissey is expected to be back for Game 1.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NHL Network, TVA3, FS Midwest (St. Louis), Sporstnet (Winnipeg)

ABOUT THE BLUES (45-28-9): Binnington, who played one game for the Blues in 2015-16, set a franchise record for wins by a rookie while finishing 24-5-1 with a league-leading 1.89 save percentage. Center Ryan O'Reilly led St. Louis in assists (49) and points (77) in his first season with the Blues, recording five points (two goals) in four games against Winnipeg. St. Louis' top line of Tarasenko, O'Reilly and forward Brayden Schenn combined for 199 points this season as the Blues are producing offensively entering the postseason, averaging almost four goals per game in their final 12 contests.

ABOUT THE JETS (47-30-5): Forward Blake Wheeler set a franchise record with 71 assists, finishing third in the NHL, while center Mark Scheifele fronts a trio of 30-goal scorers with 38. The Jets are one of the deeper teams in the league scoring wise, including forwards Kyle Connor (34 goals) and Patrick Laine (30 goals), but inconsistency has been an issue in the second half. Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck won 34 games - 10 fewer than a season ago - and went 2-3-1 in his final six games with 19 goals allowed.

        OVERTIME

        1. Laine scored six goals in four games against the Blues this season, including a five-goal performance Nov. 24 at St. Louis.

        2. St. Louis finished tied for fifth in the NHL in goals allowed per game (2.68) and ninth on the penalty kill (81.5 percent).

        3. Byfuglien played just 42 games, returning from an ankle injury March 30, while Morrissey has been sidelined since Feb. 24 with an upper-body injury.

        PREDICTION: Blues 3, Jets 2

Dallas Stars vs. Nashville Predators Preview and Predictions 04-10-2019 in NHL

The Nashville Predators had to go to the final night of the regular season to win the Central Division title but, as they found out a year ago, that does not guarantee playoff success. Making a fifth successive trip to the postseason, Nashville faces a familiar foe when it hosts the Dallas Stars on Wednesday night in a Western Conference first-round matchup.

The Predators won the Presidents' Trophy last season but they were bounced by division rival Winnipeg in the second round and are intent on avoiding a repeat against another Central foe who will they face in next year's Winter Classic. "They've got a deep team, more than they probably get credit for," Nashville center Ryan Johansen said of Dallas. "They've got a lot of solid players on that team. They've had some good goaltending as of late and obviously a few big stars that we need to have our eye on. It's going to be a lot of fun." Dallas went 5-1-1 down the stretch to take the top wild card and reach the playoffs for only the third time in 11 seasons behind stellar netminding and a defense that allowed the second-fewest goals in the league. "We're a confident group going in," captain Jamie Benn said. "We know Nashville is the real deal. ... They're good from top to bottom, great goalie. We're going to have to be prepared."

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, USA, TVAS, Sportsnet1, FS Southwest (Dallas), FS Tennessee (Nashville)

ABOUT THE STARS (43-32-7): Ben Bishop, who formed a solid goaltending tandem with backup Anton Khudobin, missed five games down the stretch due to injury before recording his career-high seventh shutout in the regular-season finale to finish with a 1.98 goals-against average and league-best .934 save percentage. Leading scorer Tyler Seguin was among the players called out by team CEO Jim Lites and responded by collecting 48 points over his last 44 games while linemate Alexander Radulov scored 12 of his 29 goals over the past 16 games. Forward Mats Zuccarello has appeared in only two games since he was acquired from the New York Rangers at the trade deadline but practiced the past two days and is expected to skate on a line with Benn and rookie Roope Hintz.

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (47-29-6): The top line of Johansen, Viktor Arvidsson and Filip Forsberg accounted for more than one-third of the team's 236 goals despite injuries that sidelined 34-goal scorer Arvidsson for 21 games and Forsberg (22 tallies) for 17 contests. Craig Smith scored 21 times for Nashville but a pair of trade-deadline pickups failed to deliver offensively as Mikael Granlund supplied one goal and four assists in 16 games while Wayne Simmonds managed a meager three points in 17 contests. Pekka Rinne has started 83 consecutive postseason games for the Predators and sparked the team to the Stanley Cup Final two years ago, but the 36-year-old endured some inconsistent spells before winning his final four starts to reach 30 victories for the eighth time.

          OVERTIME

          1. Forsberg has 22 goals and 44 points in 55 playoff games.

          2. Seguin had three goals and an assist in five meetings versus the Predators this season.

          3. Nashville had the league's worst power play, converting on only 12.9 percent of its chances.

          PREDICTION: Predators 3, Stars 2

Vegas Golden Knights vs. San Jose Sharks Preview and Predictions 04-10-2019 in NHL

The San Jose Sharks made quite the splash prior to the season by acquiring star defenseman Erik Karlsson, although the two-time Norris Trophy recipient was plagued by injuries before returning for the finale. A presumably healthy Karlsson looks to help the Sharks avenge last year's postseason exit at the hands of the Vegas Golden Knights when the teams open their Western Conference first-round series on Wednesday in San Jose.

"I didn't go too hard (in Saturday's 5-2 win over Colorado), didn't want to risk anything. I'll be able to go full out (in the playoffs) and hopefully pick it up where I left off," Karlsson said of his return after missing 27 of 32 games with groin injuries. The 28-year-old Swede, who was acquired from Ottawa on Sept. 13, showed he has the potential to carry a club on a pronounced postseason run when he helped the Senators to within one goal of the 2017 Stanley Cup Finals after posting a team-leading 18 points (two goals, 16 assists). Marc-Andre Fleury, who was on the Pittsburgh team that ended Karlsson's bid for glory, returned from a three-week absence due to a lower-body injury to yield four goals in back-to-back losses to conclude the season. The three-time Stanley Cup winner turned aside 57 of 60 shots in two meetings with San Jose -- including all 33 he faced in a 6-0 win on Nov. 24 -- and had two blankings as the Golden Knights bounced the Sharks in six games last year.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, Sportsnet, TVAS2, AT&T SportsNet-Rocky Mountains (Vegas)

ABOUT THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS (43-32-7): Ottawa also helped Vegas bolster its playoff aspirations with the in-season trade of Mark Stone, who joined offseason acquisitions Paul Stastny and Max Pacioretty on a line that could prove to be more potent than the top trio of Jonathan Marchessault, William Karlsson and Reilly Smith. Marchessault, who led the club in goals (25) and points (59) while his 34 assists were tied with Smith, scored two goals and set up four others in the season series against San Jose. William Karlsson collected eight points (three goals, five assists) in last year's playoff series versus the Sharks.

ABOUT THE SHARKS (46-27-9): San Jose became the first NHL team since Detroit and Philadelphia in 2008-09 to feature four 30-goal scorers -- captain Joe Pavelski (38), Tomas Hertl (35), Evander Kane (30) and Timo Meier (30) -- while offensive-minded defenseman Brent Burns finished the season with career-high totals in assists (67) and points (83). While the Sharks boast significant depth at both forward and defense, the question of whether goaltender Martin Jones is capable of guiding the team on another postseason run remains in play. Jones, whose 36 wins fell one shy of his career-high total, recorded just an .895 save percentage in last year's second-round series versus Vegas.

            OVERTIME

            1. Vegas C Cody Eakin recorded two of his career-best 22 goals against San Jose this season.

            2. Hertl carries a career high-tying seven-game point streak (three goals, seven assists) into Wednesday's tilt versus the Golden Knights, against whom he set up four goals this season.

            3. Marchessault (two goals, two assists) and Smith (one goal, three assists) each registered a four-point performance in a 7-3 win over San Jose on March 18.

PREDICTION: Golden Knights 3, Sharks 2

                              Eastern Conference

1A Tampa Bay vs. 2W Columbus

                              Lightning: 62-16-4, 128 points
                              Blue Jackets: 47-31-4, 98 points

Season series: The Lightning rolled through the NHL this season by tying the league record for most wins in a season with 62. Three of those victories came against old friend John Tortorella and the Blue Jackets, as Tampa Bay outscored Columbus, 17-3. The Bolts crushed the Blue Jackets in the first meeting in Tampa, 8-2 in mid-October, followed by a 4-0 shutout in January. In Tampa Bay's lone visit to central Ohio, the Lightning cruised past the Jackets, 5-1 for their sixth straight win in the series dating back to the start of the 2017-18 season.

Previous playoff outcome: Tampa Bay reached the Eastern Conference finals after eliminating New Jersey and Boston in five games each. The Lightning fell in seven games to eventual champion Washington in spite of owning a 3-2 series lead, as Tampa Bay was blanked in Games 6 and 7. Columbus had an opportunity to end Washington's title run early in the playoffs by leading the Capitals, 2-0. However, Washington won the final four games of the series to advance, marking the second straight season the Jackets were bounced in the opening round.

                              1M Washington vs. 1W Carolina

                              Capitals: 48-26-8, 104 points
                              Hurricanes: 46-29-7, 99 points

Season series: The defending champion Capitals pulled off the four-game season sweep of the Hurricanes, while limiting Carolina to four goals in the final three victories. The Caps outlasted the Hurricanes in the first matchup, 6-5 in the shootout in Raleigh as Alex Ovechkin posted a hat trick for Washington. The Caps captured the next two meetings in D.C. by a combined 7-2 score, while netting a pair of third period goals in the final meeting in Carolina, 3-2 in late March.

Previous playoff outcome: Washington hoisted the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history last June after rolling through Columbus, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, and Vegas. The Capitals actually lost the series opener in three of four instances, including twice at home to the Blue Jackets and Penguins. However, the Capitals helped themselves with a strong 10-3 road record, while clinching each series on the highway. The Hurricanes are in the playoffs for the first time since 2009, as they made it all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals before getting swept by Pittsburgh. This marks the first time ever that the Capitals and Hurricanes are meeting in the postseason.

                              2A Boston vs. 3A Toronto

                              Bruins: 49-24-9, 107 points
                              Maple Leafs: 46-28-8, 100 points

Season series: Boston captured three of four meetings from its Original Six rival, while dominating the Leafs in a pair of wins at TD Garden. The Bruins crushed the Leafs as -145 home favorites in November, 5-1, but Toronto rebounded for a 4-2 home triumph 16 days later as -160 favorites. Boston took the remaining two matchups, including a 3-2 win at Toronto as a short underdog back on January 12.

Previous playoff outcome: Toronto is probably not thrilled it has to hook up with Boston in the postseason as the Maple Leafs haven't had much luck with the Bruins. Back in the opening round in 2013, the Maple Leafs held a commanding 4-1 lead in the third period of Game 7 at TD Garden. The Bruins roared back to score three goals to force overtime and eventually won it, 5-4. Last season, the Maple Leafs rallied from a 3-1 series deficit in the first round to force Game 7 in Boston as Toronto led 4-3 headed to the third period. Boston scored the final four goals to knock out Toronto, who hasn't advanced past the opening round since 2004. The Bruins routed the Lightning in the first game of the second round, but Tampa Bay won the final four contests to eliminate Boston in five games.

                              2M N.Y. Islanders vs. 3M Pittsburgh

                              Islanders: 48-27-9, 103 points
                              Penguins: 44-26-12, 100 points

Season series: If evidenced by the four meetings this season, this series should be one of the more intriguing ones in the Eastern Conference. The Penguins and Islanders split the four-game season series as each team won once at home and once on the road. Pittsburgh swept the three-game series in 2017-18, but the Islanders knocked off the Penguins twice in a span of three days with Halloween sandwiched in between. The Penguins bounced back with a pair of wins over New York in a five-day stretch in early December as these teams haven't met in 2019.

Previous playoff outcome: The Penguins had their two-year stretch of Stanley Cup titles come to an end last May as Pittsburgh was bounced in the second round in six games by Washington. Pittsburgh has advanced past the opening round in each of the last three seasons, while eliminating the Islanders in the first round of the 2013 playoffs in six games. The Islanders are back in the postseason for the first time since 2016 as they downed the Panthers in the first round before succumbing to the Lightning in five games.

                              Western Conference

                              1P Calgary vs. 2W Colorado

                              Flames: 50-25-7, 107 points
                              Avalanche: 38-30-14, 90 points

Season series: The Flames took care of the Avalanche in all three meetings this season, which included a pair of one-goal victories. Calgary edged Colorado at Pepsi Center in overtime, 3-2 back in October as the Flames scored the final three goals after trailing 2-0. The next two matchups easily eclipsed the OVER as the Flames defeated the Avalanche, 6-5 on November 1 at the Saddledome, followed by a 5-3 victory in Alberta in early January. Since the start of the 2016-17 season, the Flames have owned the Avs by winning eight of the last nine meetings, including a 5-0 home mark.

Previous playoff outcome: Calgary is making its second postseason appearance in the last three seasons as the Flames were swept in the opening round by the Ducks in 2017. The Flames are facing the Avalanche in the playoffs for the first time ever, as Colorado is back in the postseason for the second straight year after getting knocked out in the first round by Nashville. Colorado hasn't reached the second round since 2008, while Calgary has escaped past the first round only once since reaching the Stanley Cup Final in 2004.

                              1C Nashville vs. 1W Dallas

                              Predators: 47-29-6, 100 points
                              Stars: 43-32-7, 93 points

Season series: The Predators grabbed three of five meetings from the Stars, while the road team won four times. The only time the home team came out victorious was in early February when the Predators slipped past the Stars, 3-2 in overtime at Bridgestone Arena. Although Dallas failed to win at home in two meetings, the Stars topped the Predators twice in Nashville as substantial underdogs, while limiting the Preds to one goal in those victories. The three matchups in Nashville finished UNDER the total, while the two games in Dallas sailed OVER the total.

Previous playoff outcome: For the fifth straight season the Predators are in the playoffs, as Nashville couldn't get out of the second round in 2018 after losing in seven games to Winnipeg. Nashville will hook up with Dallas in the playoffs for the first time ever, marking the fifth division opponent they have faced in the postseason since 2017. The Stars are in the postseason for the third time since 2009, as Dallas last made the playoffs in 2016 and reached Game 7 of the second round before getting blown out by St. Louis.

2C Winnipeg vs. 3C St. Louis

                              Jets: 47-30-5, 99 points
                              Blues: 45-28-9, 99 points

Season series: It's been a tale of two seasons for St. Louis, who sat in last place in January, but finished within one point of the Central division title. Why that's relevant for this discussion is the Jets took care of the Blues three times in the first two months of the season, while outscoring St. Louis, 18-9. In an 8-4 Winnipeg blowout in November, Jets' star Patrik Laine scored five goals, but the Blues blanked the Jets, 1-0 in the final matchup on December 7.

Previous playoff outcome: The new Jets were one round away from their first ever Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2018, but upstart Vegas eliminated Winnipeg in five games. Winnipeg knocked off Minnesota and Nashville in the first two rounds as it squares off with St. Louis for the first time in the playoffs since the franchise moved from Atlanta in 2011. The Blues are in the postseason for the seventh time in eight seasons, while reaching the second round in their last playoff appearance in 2017.

2P San Jose vs. 3P Vegas

                              Sharks: 46-27-9, 101 points
                              Golden Knights: 43-32-7, 93 points

Season series: The Sharks and Golden Knights split four matchups this season, as Vegas scored six and seven goals in the two wins. Both Vegas victories came by at least three goals, while each San Jose win came by one goal each. The most recent meeting occurred on March 30 at SAP Center as the Sharks edged the Golden Knights, 4-3 in overtime. Each of these division rivals struggled down the stretch as the Sharks dropped nine of their final 12 games, while Vegas lost seven of its last eight contests.

Previous playoff outcome: Vegas is back in the postseason for the second straight year after its improbable run to the Stanley Cup after eliminating Los Angeles, San Jose, and Winnipeg before losing to Washington in five games. The Golden Knights took care of the Sharks in six games of the second round, including three wins at San Jose. The Sharks are in the playoffs for the 13th time in 14 seasons since the lockout, as San Jose has advanced past the first round eight times in this stretch.
