Utah Jazz vs. Houston Rockets Preview and Predictions 04-24-2019 in NBA

Donovan Mitchell kept the Utah Jazz alive and now the star shooting guard looks to lead his club to a second straight win when they face the host Houston Rockets on Wednesday in Game 5 of the Western Conference first-round series. Mitchell scored 19 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter of Game 4 as Utah avoided being swept in four games.

Mitchell shot just 32.8 percent from the field through the first three games but rediscovered his form in the final 12 minutes on Monday as the fifth-seeded Jazz outscored visiting Houston 31-12 in the fourth quarter to post a 107-91 victory. "We've had our backs against the wall plenty of times the past two years we've been together as a team," Mitchell told reporters after Game 4. "This is familiar ground with us. Everybody responded the way we expect them to, but the biggest thing for us is take what we did (Monday) and multiply it." The fourth-seeded Rockets had a chance to conclude the series but they went 4-of-20 shooting and committed six turnovers in the fourth quarter of Game 4. "We did things that are uncharacteristic of a team that wants to win," Houston coach Mike D'Antoni told reporters afterward.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT, AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Utah), AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston)

ABOUT THE JAZZ: Veteran forward Jae Crowder scored 18 of his 23 points in the first half of Game 4 as he broke out of a three-game slump in which he averaged 6.3 points on 4-of-21 shooting. Crowder sparked the Jazz early in the contest and several of his teammates followed suit as Utah played its best game of the series. "The first two games in Houston we started the games pretty soft, and that's not who we are," Jazz center Rudy Gobert told reporters. "The fact that we lost the first two games, we had a reaction of pride, and we came out ready. Game 3 we were ready, (Monday) we were ready, and Game 5 we're going to be ready."

ABOUT THE ROCKETS: Center Clint Capela is struggling with two respiratory illnesses, one causing his eyes to be severely bloodshot. The health issues badly affected his play in Game 4 as he had just four points on 1-of-6 shooting and collected seven rebounds after averaging 11.3 points and 12 rebounds over the first three games "It's tough, man," Capela told ESPN. "Especially when I try to breathe, it's hard. I'm just going to fight it the best that I can."

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Rockets star G James Harden scored 30 points in Game 4 and is averaging 28.3 points and shooting 37.1 percent from the field in the series.

    2. Utah PG Ricky Rubio was just 6-of-17 shooting in Game 4 but had 18 points and 11 assists for his first double-double of the series.

    3. Houston PG Chris Paul, who is averaging 18 points in the series, had 23 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and five steals in the series.

    PREDICTION: Rockets 112, Jazz 105

LA Clippers vs. Golden State Warriors Preview and Predictions 04-24-2019 in NBA

The Golden State Warriors took care of business on the road and can clinch a spot in their fifth straight Western Conference semifinal series when they host the eighth-seeded Los Angeles Clippers in Game 5 on Wednesday. The Warriors squandered a 31-point lead in losing Game 2 but recovered with a pair of impressive wins as Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson led the way.

Golden State is trying to end the series as quickly as possible to prepare for a likely semifinal round against the Houston Rockets and followed up a blowout victory in Game 3 with a 113-105 triumph in Game 4 on Sunday. "We didn't want to extend this series any longer because we know how grueling the playoffs can be," Thompson told reporters. "We already let one slip away, so tonight we came in with that mindset to put our foot on the throttle and not let go." The Clippers trailed by three points entering the fourth quarter on Sunday and were in the game until the final minutes before falling short. "We wish we could get it back," forward JaMychal Green told reporters. "I don't know what we'd do differently but, man, we need those possessions, need to get stops and we needed this game."

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT, FS Prime Ticket (Los Angeles), NBCS Bay Area (Golden State)

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS: Los Angeles small forward Danilo Gallinari went 5-of-20 from the floor on Sunday and 7-of-33 in the two home games, dropping his shooting percentage for the series to 29.2. Shooting guard Lou Williams, who collected 36 points and 11 assists in the Game 2 victory, went a combined 6-of-21 in Games 3 and 4. "It still was a four-point, six-point game, but clearly if those two guys - and those are our two key offensive guys - struggle, then it's going to be hard, very, very hard for us to win against anyone," Clippers coach Doc Rivers told reporters of Gallinari and Williams after Game 4. "Let alone Golden State."

ABOUT THE WARRIORS: Thompson scored 27 of his 32 points in the first half to spark Golden State on Sunday and credited his series-best effort with a dip in the Pacific Ocean in Saturday, while coach Steve Kerr credited the performance with lifting the team. "When Klay gets going like that, it fuels the whole bench," Kerr told reporters. "You can see everybody jumping around. Everybody gets happy. We all love when Klay gets hot. It fuels our momentum. It didn't surprise me at all. He kind of had a quiet first few games of the series, so it was only a matter of time until he broke out." Durant, who poured in 38 points to fuel the rout in Game 3, added 33 points on 12-of-21 shooting in Sunday's triumph.

      BUZZER BEATERS

      1. Warriors PG Stephen Curry was held to 12 points on 3-of-14 shooting, including 1-of-9 from 3-point range, in Game 4.

      2. Los Angeles PG Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 25 points on Sunday after failing to reach double figures in the previous two games.

      3. Thompson is 8-of-11 from 3-point range in the last two contests.

      PREDICTION: Warriors 116, Clippers 99

Carolina Hurricanes vs. Washington Capitals Preview and Predictions 04-24-2019 in NHL

Carolina Hurricanes captain Justin Williams is affectionately known as "Mr. Game 7" for his penchant of delivering when a playoff series is pushed to its limit. Boasting an NHL-record 14 points (seven goals, seven assists) in Game 7s, Williams and the Hurricanes will look to land the knockout blow on Wednesday when they visit the defending Stanley Cup champion Capitals in Washington.

"We answered the bell," said the 37-year-old Williams, who owns a 7-1 mark in Game 7s. "I said from the start of the series, if they're going to knock us out, we're not going to let it be easy on them. Let's go play another game." The three-time Stanley Cup champion rocked the reigning title holders by scoring a goal in Monday's 5-2 win, giving upstart Carolina a chance to advance to the second round after failing to qualify for the playoffs in each season since 2008-09. While the Hurricanes own a 4-0 mark in Game 7s since relocating from Hartford, Washington's garish record improved to 5-11 following last year's 4-0 win over Tampa Bay in the Eastern Conference final. "I don't think anyone expected it to be easy," Capitals defenseman Brooks Orpik said. "They played well all series. We were up 2-0 and we were probably fortunate to be up 2-0, and we've been good on home ice and now we have a Game 7, and it is probably good that we have home ice."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, Sportsnet, Sportsnet 360, TVAS, FS Carolinas, NBCS Washington

ABOUT THE HURRICANES: Jordan Staal recorded his second two-point performance of the series and fourth this month when he collected a goal and an assist in Game 6, extending Carolina's dream season at least one more game. "Anything can happen in Game 7. It's what you dream of playing as a kid. I know everyone in this group is excited," the 30-year-old Staal said. Rookie Warren Foegele scored on Monday to boost his point total to eight (six goals, two assists) in his last eight contests overall, although he has just one -- an assist in Game 2 -- in his last three visits to Washington.

ABOUT THE CAPITALS: Captain Alex Ovechkin continued his scoring spree by tallying in his third consecutive contest on Monday, although his potential tying goal in the third period was denied after officials ruled that he interfered with Petr Mrazek. "Game 7 is going to be very interesting. We know how to play that. Pressure on both teams, but it's a good chance for us to beat them at home," said Ovechkin, who has four goals and three assists in Game 7s. Former Vezina Trophy recipient Braden Holtby owns a 3-4 mark in Game 7s despite posting a 1.81 goals-against average and .934 save percentage.

        OVERTIME

        1. Wednesday's winner advances to face the New York Islanders in the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.

        2. Carolina is the 10th NHL club in the Expansion Era to force a Game 7 in the opening round against the defending Stanley Cup champion.

        3. The home team has won all six games in this series.

        PREDICTION: Capitals 3, Hurricanes 2

              # 6 RIP TIDE 5/2

              # 3 JESS Y NOT ME 6/1

              # 1 JESS ME RUNNIN V 6/1

RIP TIDE is tough to overlook as the bet in here. With Rodriguez aboard him, this horse will most likely be able to break out early for this event. Boasts solid Speed Figures on average overall when compared with the rest of this group. Should hit the board without a doubt. JESS Y NOT ME - Looks very good against this group of horses in this race and will most likely be one of the early speedsters. Very good selection to take this race going in a short. JESS ME RUNNIN V - This colt has a very good win percent in short races.

                #5 EXCHANGING EMBER (ML=5/2)
                #6 MOTHER'S DAY (ML=2/1)
                #4 BIG SHOT POSSE (ML=10/1)

EXCHANGING EMBER - This filly ran well in her last race but just couldn't haul in the winner. Note that she was well in front of the show horse, and looks like a major contender in this field. Ran against the boys in her last race on Apr 4th. Have to make this filly a strong challenger; she comes off a good effort on Apr 4th. The 60 last race figure looks strong in black and white. Trainer Salvaggio moves this horse to a lower class rank to face a less competitive field. Look for a solid effort at this level. MOTHER'S DAY - Trainer Kulp moves this animal down the class ladder to face weaker company. Look for a solid effort in this race. I think that a sprinter coming off a layoff will usually run her best in the 3rd or 4th start back. Kulp has this beautiful animal prepping well coming into today. 3 strong speed figs in most recent events make me say this thoroughbred will be tough in today's race. BIG SHOT POSSE - This racer could be tough today, especially since Micklos rode last out and now should be better acquainted with this one. Lasix can take some getting used to, especially for a filly. They usually hit stride the second time using it, like we have with this horse.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #2 BALI (ML=9/5),

BALI - When examining today's class figure, she will have to garner a much better speed rating than last out to battle in this dirt sprint.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - BIG SHOT POSSE - This beautiful animal is meeting a much easier bunch than in the last event on April 4th. Worth a wager today.

                  # 6 LISA'S ESCARPMENT 6/1

                  # 1A PURDY BIRDIE 8/5

                  # 5 RAGS TO ROSES 5/2

LISA'S ESCARPMENT appears to be the bet in here. Is difficult not to consider based on Equibase Speed Figs which have been competitive - 68 avg - of late. Has a sharp shot for this event if you like back class. Has been racing well and has among the best speed in the race for today's distance. PURDY BIRDIE - With a respectable 63 Equibase speed fig last time out, will surely be a factor in this contest. Formidable average Equibase Speed Figures in dirt route races make this racer a solid contender. RAGS TO ROSES - Is a strong contender based on numbers put up recently under today's conditions. Decent pick to take this race going in a dirt route.

                    #8 WISH FOR INTEREST (ML=8/1)

LA CHALK - We have lots of early speed with this racer. She could wire this field. WISH FOR INTEREST - Really have to believe this magnificent animal is going to be right there at the wire.

Vulnerable Contenders: #1 KEEPING TIME (ML=5/1), #4 HALF TIME ALLIE (ML=6/1), #3 GALAXY GIRL (ML=6/1),

KEEPING TIME - I'd like to see more preferred recent outings with morning line odds of 5/1. HALF TIME ALLIE - Tough to invest in this mount in today's event. Make her show you something in a short distance race before you invest in her in a race of 6 1/2 furlongs. GALAXY GIRL - If she goes off at the oddsmaker's morning line of 6/1, I'll have to pass.

                    STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Have to go with #5 LA CHALK on the win end if we get at least 6/5 odds
