Denver Nuggets vs. San Antonio Spurs Preview and Predictions 04-25-2019 in NBA

he Denver Nuggets are in solid position to win a playoff series for the first time since 2009. Denver holds a 3-2 lead over San Antonio in the best-of-seven series as it visits the Spurs on Thursday for Game 6 of the Western Conference first-round matchup.

Second-seeded Denver won the past two games, including a Game 4 win that halted a 14-game losing streak in San Antonio, but is well aware eliminating the Spurs will be no easy task. "A close-out game is the hardest game that many of our young players will ever play in, especially against a team like San Antonio," Nuggets coach Michael Malone told reporters. The seventh-seeded Spurs are looking to avoid their second consecutive first-round exit and will have to put up a better effort than they did in Game 5, when they trailed by as many as 30 points in the 108-90 road loss. "We want to win two straight," San Antonio guard Bryn Forbes told reporters. "That's our goal, to play the best two games we can put together and try to win these next two."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT, Altitude (Denver), FS Southwest (San Antonio)

ABOUT THE NUGGETS: All-Star center Nikola Jokic has four double-doubles - including one triple double - during a strong playoff debut that has seen him average 19.6 points, 11.6 rebounds and nine assists in the series. "You hear everybody talk about these other players, rightfully so," Malone told reporters. "The league is filled with great players. What Nikola Jokic is doing in his playoff debut has not happened very often in the history of this game. ... I hope this playoff crowd, this national TV audience that people are tuning in and watching us and saying, 'Man, this kid Nikola Jokic is real.' We know it and it's about time everyone else realizes it." Point guard Jamal Murray appears to have set aside his shooting issues from earlier in the series and he is averaging 23.5 points over the past two games to raise his average to 18.8.

ABOUT THE SPURS: Second-year point guard Derrick White struggled the past two games - averaging 10 points on 8-of-19 shooting - after his career-best 36-point outing on 15-of-21 shooting in Game 3. White said he is learning with each postseason game -"consistency is such a big thing," he said - but both the 24-year-old and coach Gregg Popovich know time is running out. "He's basically a young kid who's feeling his way," Popovich told reporters. "Playoffs are different than the regular season. And he's growing and every night is an education, whether he plays poorly or whether he's great. So, he's a willing young man, going to have a great future. But he's got to have this kind of experience. So, hopefully he'll bounce back on Thursday."

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Spurs SG DeMar DeRozan averaged 18 points in the back-to-back setbacks, dropping his team-best series average to 22.0.

    2. Denver backup SG Will Barton scored 17 points in Game 5 and is averaging 14.5 over the past two games.

    3. San Antonio C Jakob Poeltl scored 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting in Game 5 and is 18-of-27 in the series.

    PREDICTION: Spurs 111, Nuggets 109

Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Boston Bruins Preview and Predictions 04-25-2019 in NHL

The Boston Bruins knew if they survived their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the reward would be a matchup against the league's best team. However, with the Tampa Bay Lightning suffering a shocking loss in their opening series, the Bruins kick off a best-of-seven set against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday night.

Boston nearly didn't hold up its end of the deal, needing to win Game 6 in Toronto before easing to a 5-1 victory in Tuesday's Game 7 to advance to the conference semifinals versus Columbus. "They're well-rested. They won ... four in a row against arguably a favorite going into the Stanley Cup playoffs," Bruins general manager Don Sweeney said of the Blue Jackets. "They made a lot of changes. They've come together. They present a lot of challenges and we're going to have to be at our best in order to beat them." Columbus, idle since April 16, spotted the Lightning a three-goal lead in Game 1 before roaring back and completing a stunning sweep of the Presidents' Trophy winners for the first series win in franchise history. "Other than Tampa, I think they're probably the best team in the National Hockey League," Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella said of Boston, which won two of three meetings this season -- all coming in the final month.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, Sportsnet, CBC, TVA

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS: Columbus, perhaps the most active team at the trade deadline, did not click until a 7-1-0 closing stretch -- the only loss was to Boston -- and carried that momentum into the postseason by outscoring Tampa Bay 19-5 after the first period of the series opener. Matt Duchene, the prime acquisition at the trade deadline, led the team with three goals and seven points versus the Lightning while eight other players had at least three points. The key, however, will be two-time Vezina Trophy winner Sergei Bobrovsky, who turned aside 109 of 117 shots by a team that tied the NHL record for most victories.

ABOUT THE BRUINS: Netminder Tuukka Rask also has a Vezina Trophy on his resume but he had an uneven season, posting a career-worst .912 save percentage and his fewest wins since 2012-13, but he permitted five goals in the last three games versus Toronto. "Hopefully, he can continue to build on his playoff legacy. It's a big Game 7 win," Boston coach Bruce Cassidy said after Rask's 32-save performance on Tuesday. "I believe he was our best player." Brad Marchand paced the offense with four goals and five assists as he combined with linemates Patrice Bergeron and David Pastrnak for 20 points versus Toronto.

      OVERTIME

      1. Columbus was 5 of 10 and Boston 7 of 16 on the power play in the first round.

      2. Pastrnak missed two meetings with Columbus but has scored at least 34 goals in each of the past three seasons.

      3. Blue Jackets F Alexandre Texier, signed in each April, scored twice in the clincher over Tampa Bay.

PREDICTION: Bruins 3, Blue Jackets 2

Dallas Stars vs. St. Louis Blues Preview and Predictions 04-25-2019 in NHL

Ben Bishop has enjoyed a sterling season, one in which he became a Vezina Trophy finalist for the third time in his career and powered the upstart Dallas Stars into the second round of the Western Conference playoffs. Bishop will face his hometown team as well as the one that drafted him in 2005 when the visiting Stars open their series against the St. Louis Blues on Thursday.

"I've been trying not to think about it, obviously trying to worry about this series," the 32-year-old Bishop said. "It kind of gets a smile." Bishop provided plenty of smiles in the first round, making 47 saves in the finale to record a 1.90 goals-against average and .945 save percentage as Dallas eliminated Central Division champion Nashville in six games. St. Louis also needed six games to dispatch Winnipeg, with Jaden Schwartz notching a natural hat trick in a 3-2 win in Game 6 on Saturday. "It's nice to get a few days to get some rest and to regroup," the 26-year-old said. "Rest is important this time of year. It's nice. We haven't really been practicing much as the year went on. It's nice to touch up on a few things."

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, Sportsnet, TVAS

ABOUT THE STARS: Each member of Dallas' top line recorded six points in the first round, with Alexander Radulov burning his former team for a club-best four goals while Tyler Seguin added two and captain Jamie Benn had a team high-tying five assists. "It's going to be a tough challenge, just like Nashville," the 29-year-old Benn said. "Obviously St. Louis has probably been one of the best teams, if not the best, since January. They've been on a great run, so it's going to be another hard-fought battle." Defenseman John Klingberg, who also had five assists in the first round, recorded seven points in the season series versus the Blues while Benn had five goals to help the Stars win three of the four games.

ABOUT THE BLUES: Rookie Jordan Binnington rebounded from a disastrous Game 3 performance against the Jets in which he yielded six goals on 29 shots to surrender the same total over the last three games. Vladimir Tarasenko, who has scored at least 33 goals in five straight seasons, tallied three times against the Stars in 2018-19. Captain Alex Pietrangelo recorded four of his team-leading six assists at home in the first-round series against Winnipeg.

        OVERTIME

        1. St. Louis fell to Dallas in both of its home games this season.

        2. The Stars were a perfect 15-for-15 on the penalty kill in the first round.

        3. The Blues defeated the Stars in their last postseason meeting, ousting their rivals in seven games during a second-round series in 2016.

        PREDICTION: Stars 4, Blues 2

My pick here is BLACK CAZADOR. Has some interesting angles which make this one a bet. Has to be given a chance versus this group displaying formidable figures recently and an average speed rating of 75 under similar conditions. His 65 average has this gelding with among the best speed figs in this contest. RYANS CARTEL - With Dominguez aboard him, this gelding should be able to break out early here. Had one of the strongest speed figures of this group of horses in his last contest. FIRSTPOLITICALAFFAIR - Recently Carrizales has provided players with a respectable winning percentage with horses racing in short races. This trainer has done quite well as of late with entries racing at this distance and surface.

                  Gulfstream Park - Race #5 - Post: 3:15pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $25,000 Class Rating: 78

                  #6 FOR KICKS (ML=3/1)
                  #8 SHE'LL DO (ML=5/2)

FOR KICKS - Stalking speed. My cronies and I like this thoroughbred. Took a class drop last time around the track at Gulfstream Park. Belsoeur keeps her at the same level in this event. I think that's a good move. SHE'LL DO - Comparing how the horses in this field have fared under similar conditions, I see this horse has the highest speed rating for the dist-surf. Rounding her way back into form. Each of her finish positions is getting better in her recent starts. Last time this filly ran today's trip she got a speed figure that would probably win today's contest. This filly is in fine condition. Finished third on Mar 28th.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #2 NOVELLA (ML=4/1), #12 BOCA ROYALTY (ML=8/1), #3 KINDHEARTED KOTA (ML=8/1),

NOVELLA - 4/1 is not enough of a value to take on most any horse that has run poorly in back to back outings. BOCA ROYALTY - Run-of-the-mill speed rating last time out at Gulfstream Park at 1 mile. Don't think this less than sharp equine will improve too much in today's event. KINDHEARTED KOTA - Just can't bet on this runner. Didn't show me anything positive last out or on Mar 15th.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - SHE'LL DO - I like to check out the TrackMaster Platinum PPs to look for the top thoroughbred in earnings per start. This fine animal looks good to me so I'm making a prime investment on her.

                    # 9 JANELLE DREAMS 6/1

                    # 3 SHREW MEANING 5/2

                    # 2 SOLDAT HOUSE 6/1

JANELLE DREAMS looks strong to best this field. Ran a solid last race. She should have a good showing versus this easier group. SHREW MEANING - Had one of the strongest Equibase Speed Figures of this group of horses in this race in her last outing. Must be carefully examined here on the basis of the numbers in the speed department alone. SOLDAT HOUSE - Has run soundly when travelling a turf route race. She has a strong distance/surface win record - 1 out of 3.

                      #2 OUR FAVORITE CITY (ML=8/1)

HER AGAIN - Hernandez and Steiner perform well when they unite. It's hard to beat a +65 ROI for a rider and trainer. This horse could be close at the end. She's got a great late kick. Steiner has a knack for picking up horses that can be improved. Fantastic win rate with equines off a claim, and they just picked this one up out of her last race. This equine is at the top in earnings per start. She looks nice in today's affair. The recent speed fig of 87 is the best last race figure in the field. PATTIN FOR A DANCE - You always have to be on the prowl for revenue generating jock/trainer duos; we have one right here. This animal loves the track here at Golden Gate Fields. OUR FAVORITE CITY - Lets try to beat the probable favorites with this mare. Just missed last out, but ran a respectable race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 AMBER LOUISE (ML=3/1), #1 SEA MYRTLE (ML=9/2),

AMBER LOUISE - Difficult to play at 3/1 odds after the two most recent efforts. Should have at least finished in the money in the last 60 days in a short distance affair to be worth a shot at minimal odds in a sprint. SEA MYRTLE - If you keep playing these kind of 'hanger' types, you're going to be frustrated often. Hard to play any animal to turn things around if there is no wager value to taking the risk.
