Philadelphia 76ers vs. Toronto Raptors Preview and Predictions 04-27-2019 in NBA

The Toronto Raptors are willing to ride Kawhi Leonard as far as he can take them as they enter the Eastern Conference second-round series against the visiting Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday. The All-Star small forward, who is scheduled to become a free agent after the season, averaged 27.8 points and 6.6 rebounds in the first round against the Orlando Magic.

The second-seeded Raptors went 3-1 against the 76ers this season as Leonard averaged 30.3 points, 7.7 rebounds and four steals in three games and now Philadelphia is likely to assign Ben Simmons to be the primary defender while mixing in others. "I think you're going to see multiple people, we have the ability to have multiple people guard Kawhi," 76ers coach Brett Brown told reporters. "So it would be wrong to assume that's (Simmons') matchup for the series but for sure he will be on him." Third-seeded Philadelphia dispatched the Brooklyn Nets in its first-round series and is looking to win multiple playoff series for the first time since losing in the 2001 NBA Finals. Toronto has lost in the second round in each of the past two seasons after reaching the Eastern Conference finals in 2016.

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, TNT, Sportsnet One (Toronto)

ABOUT THE 76ERS: Center Joel Embiid, who has battled knee issues of late, averaged 26.3 points and 11.8 rebounds against the Raptors in the regular season, while Simmons committed an average of 6.3 turnovers - 24 of the 25 came in losses - while recording 16.3 points, 9.3 rebounds and 8.8 assists. Small forward Jimmy Butler said his club is entering the series on a high and he figures that will aid the quest against the Raptors. "I think confidence is key," Butler told reporters. "We need everybody to be healthy but as long as everybody is confident and competing, we will continue to grow and will continue to get better."

ABOUT THE RAPTORS: Leonard had outings of 36 and 31 points in the regular season against the 76ers and coach Nick Nurse sees a player that is ready to do further damage. "He's been through this before, the playoffs, and has made deep runs, obviously," Nurse said of a player who earned NBA Finals MVP for the San Antonio Spurs in 2014. "He relishes this time of year and I think it shows. Playing strong, playing fast, playing defense. He's a great two-way player. He's a great player in this league." Leonard has been receiving yeoman help from young forward Pascal Siakam, who averaged 22.6 points and 8.4 rebounds in the series against Orlando

    BUZZER BEATERS

    1. Philadelphia has lost 13 straight games in Toronto dating back to a 93-83 win on Nov. 10, 2012.

    2. The Raptors are just 2-14 in Game 1s and dropped the opener in the Orlando series.

    3. Brown said he expects reserve F Mike Scott (foot) to miss Game 1.

    PREDICTION: Raptors 108, 76ers 102

San Antonio Spurs vs. Denver Nuggets Preview and Predictions 04-27-2019 in NBA

The San Antonio Spurs forced a Game 7 but the Denver Nuggets figure they have the edge because Saturday's decisive game is in their home facility. Denver was an NBA-best 34-7 at home in the regular season and hopes to cash in on earning homecourt advantage for the Western Conference first-round series.

The second-seeded Nuggets were unable to clinch on Thursday in San Antonio as they lost 120-103 but now have the friendly fans on their side. "We worked hard to get homecourt advantage to go home and play a Game 7," Denver coach Michael Malone told reporters after Game 6. "We had the best home record in the NBA this year, so that's what we're looking forward to." The seventh-seeded Spurs came through with their backs against the wall and shooting guard DeMar DeRozan said it was due to a more forceful approach. "They've been great at throwing a punch at us and running away with it," DeRozan told reporters. "We tried to sustain that and understand whatever they do we have to match it, be more aggressive, understand we have to keep our rhythm, being aggressive on both ends and we did that."

TV: 10 p.m. ET, TNT, Altitude (Denver), FS Southwest (San Antonio)

ABOUT THE SPURS: San Antonio is looking to avoid its second straight first-round exit and it staved off elimination in impressive fashion in Game 6 when it shot 57.1 percent from the field and committed just eight turnovers. "We had a lot of people participate," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich told reporters afterward. "Lot of people came and had good games. I think the Nuggets have had that pretty regularly and we had that (in Game 6), so, that was great to see." DeRozan was an efficient 12-of-16 shooting while recording 25 points, seven rebounds and seven assists and power forward LaMarcus Aldridge had team highs of 26 points and 10 rebounds.

ABOUT THE NUGGETS: The postseason has been a coming-out party for All-Star center Nikola Jokic and he established a franchise playoff record with 43 points in Game 6, surpassing the 42 scored by Hall of Famer Alex English in 1983. Jokic, who made 19-of-30 shots on Thursday, is averaging 23.5 points, 11.7 rebounds and nine assists with five double-doubles in the series. Denver's 3-point shooting (6-of-24) and its bench (13 points on 5-of-24 shooting) were liabilities in the Game 6 loss.

      BUZZER BEATERS

      1. The Spurs won Game 1 in Denver, 101-96.

      2. Nuggets PG Jamal Murray is averaging 18.3 points in the series but Thursday's 7-of-18 shooting effort was his third below 40 percent in that span.

      3. San Antonio backup SF Rudy Gay scored a series-best 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting after averaging six points on 7-of-33 shooting over the previous four games.

      PREDICTION: Spurs 107, Nuggets 103

Dallas Stars vs. St. Louis Blues Preview and Predictions 04-27-2019 in NHL

The Dallas Stars handed St. Louis a pair of three-goal losses during the regular season, but the playoffs are a different animal and the Blues have thrived under the glare of postseason pressure. After posting its fifth one-goal victory of the playoffs, St. Louis looks to hold serve in Saturday afternoon's Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinal series versus visiting Dallas.

Forward Vladimir Tarasenko scored twice and the Blues held on for a 3-2 victory to improve to 10-3 in their last 13 one-goal games in the postseason. "I don't want to talk about this," Tarasenko told reporters after his team's third consecutive 3-2 win. "I don't think it's right to talk about your moments in the game. It's just Game 1 and we have a win - it's the most exciting thing." Dallas, which won three in a row to bounce No. 2 seed and Central Division champion Nashville in six games in the first round, also was not putting too much stock into one game. "It's going to be tight-checking. It's going to be momentum swings back and forth," Stars forward Jason Spezza told reporters. "We did a lot of positive things. I think we have another level to go to. ... There was some stuff to build off for sure."

TV: 3 p.m. ET, NBC, TVA, Sportsnet

ABOUT THE STARS: Captain Jamie Benn gave Dallas hope with a late goal in the third period - his sixth tally against St. Louis this season - but the Stars were playing catch-up after Vezina Trophy finalist Ben Bishop allowed a soft opening goal by Robby Fabbri. "It's going to be a chess match for the whole series. We had our pushes, they had theirs," Benn told reporters. "There are going to be momentum swings throughout the game, they got the first one. It's going to go back and forth throughout the series." Dallas' penalty kill was dented for the first time in the postseason after killing off all 15 power plays in the series versus Nashville.

ABOUT THE BLUES: While Tarasenko did not want to talk about his exploits, his teammates had plenty to say after the Russian standout converted on the power play before delivering what proved to be the game-winner with a power move down the right wing. "It's amazing how he can make something out of nothing," Blues center Ryan O'Reilly told reporters. "That's just him. He's just one of the few people in the game that can turn it on and make those amazing plays." Rookie netminder Jordan Binnington, who did not make his NHL start until Jan. 7, made 27 saves to record his 29th victory - the most among any NHL goaltender in the 2019 calendar year.

        OVERTIME

        1. Tarasenko has 26 goals in 51 career playoff games.

        2. Stars D John Klingberg collected an assist in Game 1 to tie Benn for the team lead with seven points in the playoffs.

        3. Blues D Alex Pietrangelo notched his team-high seventh point of the postseason with an assist Thursday.

        PREDICTION: Stars 3, Blues 2

Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Boston Bruins Preview and Predictions 04-27-2019 in NHL

Following a rash of upsets in the opening round of the postseason, which saw all four division winners sent packing, the Boston Bruins could be considered the team to beat in the race to hoist the Stanley Cup. The Bruins look to take a 2-0 lead in their Eastern Conference semifinal series when they host the eighth-seeded Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday night.

Two days after eliminating Toronto in a winner-take-all Game 7, Boston needed overtime to squeeze out a 3-2 victory over the Blue Jackets on Thursday night - its third win in four matchups this season. "You want to ride that same emotion going into that next series, but then again you realize that you need to bring the same intensity," Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask told reporters after Thursday's win. "So that's what we wanted to do, we wanted to play hard right off the bat." Conversely, Columbus was idle for eight days after dismantling Presidents' Trophy-winning Tampa Bay in a shocking four-game sweep and the layoff was apparent to both the coaching staff and players. "You can't simulate a playoff game, especially a second-round playoff game against a really good team like that," forward Brandon Dubinsky told reporters. "I figured we'd come out with a little rust. Obviously, we need to be sharper."

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC, TVA, Sportsnet

ABOUT THE BLUE JACKETS: Columbus erupted for 19 goals after spotting Tampa Bay a 3-0 lead in its playoff opener, but it has been limited to a combined five tallies in the last three meetings against the Bruins - with both goals Thursday coming in a span of 13 seconds. "I think we have the personnel to be able to score those (gritty) goals, but we have the personnel to be able to score those skill goals on the rushes and stuff like that," said Pierre-Luc Dubois, who was credited with a goal when a puck deflected off his body. "I think that's what's dangerous about our team." Sergei Bobrovsky made 34 saves in Game 1 but has surrendered 21 goals in his last five starts versus Boston.

ABOUT THE BRUINS: Charlie Coyle, who grew up less than 20 miles from Boston and was among the most under-the-radar acquisitions at the trade deadline, scored the tying goal late in the third before delivering the decisive tally in overtime for his team-high fifth strike of the playoffs. Another overlooked addition to the roster, Marcus Johansson, also played a huge role in Game 1 by setting up both goals by Coyle - including a perfect cross-ice pass in the extra session that led to a tap-in. One possible injury concern is No. 2 center David Krejci (upper body), who was hurt in the third period Thursday and is listed as day-to-day, with coach Bruce Cassidy saying he could be a game-time decision.

          OVERTIME

          1. Bruins F David Pastrnak, who had 38 goals in the regular season, has tallied in only one of the eight playoff games.

          2. Blue Jackets D Seth Jones has five points during a three-game streak after collecting two assists Thursday.

          3. Both teams were productive on the power play in the first round but they each failed on four chances Thursday.

PREDICTION: Bruins 4, Blue Jackets 2

              Saturday, April 27

The Athletics and Blue Jays do battle north of the border in a 3:07 p.m. ET start, with LHP Brett Anderson going for the A's and RHP Aaron Sanchez toeing the slab for the Jays. For what it's worth, the A's are 14-5 in their past 19 games on a Saturday. More importantly, they're 57-25 in the past 82 games against losing teams prior to Friday's game. While they're also 12-5 in the past 17 starts by Anderson against a losing team. they're just 1-4 in his past five on the road against losing teams, and 1-7 in his past eight starts on the road overall. The Jays enter this one 5-0 across the past five starts by Sanchez at home, and they're 10-4 in his past 14 overall. In addition, they're 4-1 in his past five at home against winning teams, although just 5-11 in his past 16 overall against winning sides and 1-4 in his past five against the American League West Division.

For the second consecutive day, the Yankees and Giants have a lefty-on-lefty battle in San Francisco. Friday's game featured LHPs James Paxton vs. Madison Bumgarner, while Saturday will have LHP J.A. Happ against LHP Derek Holland. The Yankees are 6-1 in Happ's past seven road outings, 12-5 in his past 17 overall and 7-3 in his past 10 against teams with a losing overall record. The Giants are 1-5 in Holland's past six starts overall, and 1-6 in his past seven against winning teams while going 1-4 in his past five outings at home.

The Rangers and Mariners tangle at T-Mobile Park on Saturday night in a 'Battle of Mikes' with LHP Mike Minor against RHP Mike Leake. The Rangers are just 2-5 in Minor's past seven starts overall and 3-8 in his past 11 against teams with a winning overall record. However, the Rangers are 6-2 across Minor's past eight starts inside the division. The M's are 5-1 in their past six at home against left-handed starting pitchers, while going 9-3 in the pas 12 vs. LHP overall. They're also 4-1 in Leake's past five at home, while going a perfect 5-0 in his past five starts on a Saturday.

In the late game, RHP Joe Musgrove looks to turn things around against the Dodgers in L.A. The Bucs are just 1-6 in Musgrove's past seven starts on the road, 1-6 in his past seven against the NL West and 1-4 in his past five on the road against teams with a winning overall record. LHP Clayton Kershaw is on the bump for the Dodgers, and L.A. is 43-12 in his past 55 home outings, while going 49-15 in his past 64 at home against winning teams. The over is 4-1 in Kershaw's past five outings against Pittsburgh, although the under is 4-1 in his past five home starts against the Pirates.

              Weather Report

The Reds and Cardinals will face overcast conditions at Busch Stadium and a stiff wind blowing 15-18 mph from first base to left field. In D.C. the wind will be blowing from third base to first base at a 12-15 mph clip, dying down by the final innings of the game. The Rays and Red Sox will also be dealing wit ha stiff wind blowing out from home plate to right field at a steady 15-17 mph clip. The same holds true for the Marlins and Phillies, blowing out of the bandbox at 'The Vault' with a 13-17 mph wind to right field. For the Brewers-Mets in New York, the winds gust left to right at 11-14 mph.

Wind will be an issue all over the Midwest, too. For the Tigers-White Sox, a chilly rain turning to, believe it or not, snow, will be falling, so expect a cancellation. If they do get underway, it will be a raw, cold wind blowing in from 20-24 mph. For the Angels-Royals in K.C. they will have a 17-21 mph wind blowing from third to first base, knocking down fly balls for right-handed hitters.

              Sunday, April 28

RHPs Pablo Lopez and RHP Zach Eflin do battle in Philadelphia in the series finale. Eflin has been up and down during the early going, posting just two quality starts in six starts so far this season, compiling a 2-3 record and 4.15 ERA. That includes a loss in Miami on April 13 in his first start against the Marlins, allowing season highs of six earned runs and 10 hits in just four innings. Lopez also has a 2-3 record and a 4.44 ERA, so total bettors might be leaning to the over. However, watch the wind, as it will be blowing in hard (see below). Lopez posted his first quality start of the season last time out, posting just one unearned run, two hits and two walks with six strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings in Cleveland.

RHP Lance Lynn takes the ball for the Rangers, facing RHP Erik Swanson of the Mariners. Lynn has been very giving, posting a 2-2 record and 6.51 ERA through five starts. He was tuned up for a season-high eight earned runs and nine hits over just 3 1/3 innings in a loss in Oakland on April 23 last time out. He needed an awful 23.7 pitches per inning. The Rangers are 1-2 in his three outings against American League West Division foes so far this season. Swanson is winless in two starts and three appearances, although he has a quality start in his only start this season in Seattle. He allowed one earned run, two hits and no walks with five strikeouts over six innings in a loss against Cleveland.

The Indians and Astros do battle on Sunday Night Baseball, and it looks like RHP Carlos Carrasco (knee) will be a go for his scheduled start. He left his last outing in the fifth inning after a collision, suffering a knee ailment. He went for what was called a precautionary MRI and everything checked out fine and he is expected to be able to go. It's been a tough go for Carrasco by his standards, going 2-2 with a 6.00 ERA through five starts. However, he has been his usual self from a strikeouts perspective, whiffing 33 over just 21 innings. LHP Wade Miley will take the ball for the Astros, and he enters with a 1-2 record and 3.58 ERA over 27 2/3 innings across five outings. He has back-to-back quality starts heading into this one, although he is 0-1 with a 3.75 ERA over the 12-inning span. The Astros are 3-1 over his past four starts, including 2-0 at home this season.

              Weather Report

The rains will be rolling in midway through the afternoon game between the Rays and Red Sox. The Marlins and Phillies will be battling winds from 12-15 mph from the left-center field power alley into the face of the batters, making 'The Vault' play bigger than it is. For the Padres-Nationals series finale, the winds will be gusting 15-18 mph blowing directly from the center field seats into home plate.

Like Saturday, the Midwest will be under the gun as far as winds are concerned. In both Minnesota and Kansas City, the winds will be blowing from first base to third base at a 12-15 mph clip, limiting the ability of left-handed power hitters for the O's-Twins and Angels-Royals games. Those will be the only trouble spots, with a handful of games in neutral conditions in venues with retractable roofs.
