    Evangeline Downs - Race #5 - Post: 7:42pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $8,500 Class Rating: 78

Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

    #8 REAL TIME (ML=8/1)
    #2 CHAOSMOS (ML=5/2)

REAL TIME - I'm optimistic this gelding will run well today. Last work was 2nd fastest of the day, which tells me he's sharp right now. Gelding won on Dec 22nd at this class and distance. Using this jock/conditioner combination is a smart choice. Many times a horse with a good sod record like this one's will adapt to the tight bullring turns. CHAOSMOS - This gelding is in good form, having run a good race on April 24th, finishing second. Another way to determine class is earnings per start (EPS). This racer has the topmost in the bunch. I think he'll be close at the end.

    Vulnerable Contenders: #3 SIMBA'S PRIDE (ML=7/2), #7 SUNRISE HAWK (ML=9/2), #1 TYLERS BANDIT (ML=5/1),

SIMBA'S PRIDE - Finished third in his most recent race with a most unsatisfactory speed figure. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this group. SUNRISE HAWK - Tough to bet on any mount to turn things around if there is no value to taking the stab. The Equibase speed figures continue to drop, 70/58/52. Not a good sign. Mediocre speed fig in the last race at Evangeline Downs at 1 mile. Don't believe this vulnerable equine will improve too much today. TYLERS BANDIT - Will not be easy for this horse to beat this bunch off of that last speed fig. Improbable to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's Equibase class figure, so put him on the possibly overvalued equines list. This gelding just doesn't seem to like the number 1 post. His running lines show that he doesn't fare well from there.

      Race 6 - Maiden - 300y on the Dirt. Purse: $10100 Class Rating: 72

QUARTER HORSE 300Y, FOR REGISTERED NEW MEXICO BRED MAIDENS, TWO YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 124 LBS.

      RECOMMENDED CHOICES
      The Walker Group Picks

      # 6 CLOSE TO CRAZY 2/1

      # 3 SNOW JEWELS SPARKLE 5/2

      # 7 YERBANIS 9/2

I have to consider CLOSE TO CRAZY here. She has been running strongly and the Equibase speed figs are among the best in this field. Will make a strong showing versus this bunch. With a sound 70 average speed figure at the distance, seems well suited for today's race. SNOW JEWELS SPARKLE - Opposing a much softer group than last time out. Is worth looking at and may be a wager - strong Equibase speed figs (63 average) at today's distance and surface recently. YERBANIS - Could best this field based on the speed figure - 51 - of his last contest. Has run soundly when travelling a short race.

                              COMPLIMENTARY WINNER

My free play for Saturday is on the Houston Astros Run Line against the Texas Rangers. It's a steep price, I know, but there's a reason the Astros are laying a big number, and this is a comp selection, so we're going to lay it and have some fun.

Look, sometimes you have to lay the price with teams like this. And as good as the Astros have been playing, with that offensive lineup, I have to take a shot. The Astros are 13-5 against the rest of the American League West, and they roll in having belted a league second-best 69 home runs this season.

That doesn't bode well for a Rangers staff that has lost six of 10 and has been outscored by opponents by 16 runs in that span. They're hitting just .212 over those 10 games, and that won't cut it when the Astros have hit .297 in their last 10 and have outscored opponents by 25 runs over that same time frame.

Texas' pitching staff has an ERA of 5.14, another reason to believe the Astros will be able to have their way at the plate today.

I'll lay the run line with Houston here.

My free play tonight is back on the ice, where I just nailed the Dallas Stars and St. Louis Blues to stay Under the posted number on Tuesday, and then hit the San Jose Sharks to nab their second straight Game 7 victory, this time over the Colorado Avalanche.

I'm looking ahead to the Western Conference Final between the Sharks and Blues, as the price is cheap.

The fact is, this team has gone, as Joe Pavelski goes.

He was injured during the regular season, and provided a spark when he returned.

He was lost after a gruesome head injury in the first round of the playoffs, and the team was ignited in Game 7 of the second round, when he scored a goal and registered an assist to lead the Sharks to a 3-2 win over Colorado.

Pavelski is San Jose's Michael Jordan. He's the team's LeBron.

I mean c'mon, this is a guy who took a Brent Burns slap shot off the jaw in Game 1 of the opening round, and the puck trickled past Marc-Andre Fleury for a goal.

Pavelski will ultimately be the reason the Sharks win this series and end up in the second Stanley Cup Final in four seasons.

For everything this team has been through, and as deep as the forwards and defensemen go, the Sharks have shown us resiliency and that they know how to win.

They fell behind 3-1 in the first-round series to Vegas before rallying to win Games 5, 6 and 7 to complete the greatest comeback in franchise history.

Sans Pavelski for the first six games against Colorado, the Sharks won the off-numbered games. Their captain and leading goal scorer came back in Game 7 and, well, here we are.

I like St. Louis, a lot. I love the tenacity of this team and think Jordan Binnington should win the Calder Trophy over Vancouver's Elias Petterson. Heck, I thought Binnington could've been considered for the Vezina Trophy.

But when you speak of a Sharks team that has forwards like Pavelski, Tomas Hertl, Logan Couture, Evander Kane and defensemen like Erik Karlsson, Brent Burns and Marc-Edouard Vlasic, it's just too hard to look past this team. And lest we forget how good of a postseason goalie Martin Jones was prior to last season, when the Sharks were beat in six games by surprising Vegas. Jones has gone through two tough seven-game series, and he's a grizzled veteran who led the Sharks to the Stanley Cup Final in 2016.

The Sharks have all the confidence in the world, with the best blueliners in the league, a rough and tough Pavelski who just had staples in his head last week, and scrappy forwards like Hertl and Couture, who lead the league with nine goals each this postseason.

San Jose will have St. Louis singing the blues, as the Sharks are smelling blood in the water!

Roll with the San Jose Sharks in this series.
