    Ballpark Figures - Week 8
    Joe Williams

    Short Slate

There are just seven games to be played on Monday, so it's a rather shortened slate. The Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners square off at T-Mobile Park (still weird not calling it Safeco Field) on Monday, as RHP Mike Fiers attempts to join Johnny Vander Meer as the only pitcher to record consecutive no-hitters. He'll be opposed by LHP Yusei Kikuchi, a rookie southpaw who enters play 2-1 with a 3.54 ERA and .266 on-base percentage allowed while managing a sparkling 1.06 WHIP through 48 1/3 innings.

The Athletics have won just once in the past 10 road games, while going 1-4 over the past five outings for Fiers. However, the A's are 12-3 across the past 15 starts by Fiers on a grass surface, and 5-2 in his past seven inside the division. In addition, the A's are a dismal 3-15 acrosss the past 18 road games against a team with a losing overall mark. However, they are 10-4 in the past 14 road games vs. LHP, while going just 5-17 across the past 22 games against a team with a losing overall record.

The Mariners fired out of the chute, but they're just 7-21 across the past 28 games, and 2-6 in the past eight agaisnt a right-handed starting pitcher. They're also just 1-6 in the past seven at home vs. RHP, although they're 6-2 in the past eight at home against a losing team, and 8-2 in the past 10 overall against teams with a losing overall mark. In this series, the over is 7-1 in the past eight meetings, while going 8-3 in the past 11 battles in Seattle. The A's have also won just four of their past 13 games overall against the M's.

    Looking Ahead

    Monday, May 13

The Pirates and Diamondbacks square off in the desert with RHP Nick Kingham facing LHP Robbie Ray in a righy-lefty matchup. Pittsburgh has won five of the past six on the road, and they're 4-1 in the past five against winning teams while going 6-2 in the psat eight overall. However, they're still just 0-4 in the past four vs. LHP, while cashing in only one of Kingham's past six outings. They're also 0-4 in his past four road starts against a team with a winning overall mark.

The Twins and Angels lock horns in the Twin Cities, and that's been good for the Halos lately. They're 10-2 in the past 12 against American League Central Division foes. They're also 6-1 in the past seven vs. RHP, and 5-2 in the past seven on the road. While they're 7-3 in the past 10 road outings by LHP Tyler Skaggs against teams with a winning mark, they're just 1-4 in his past five road contests. The Twins are a perfect 5-0 across RHP Jose Berrios' past five outings, and a whoppig 14-2 in the past 16 at home against teams with a losing overall mark. The under is 4-1 in the past five in this series, going going 4-1 in the past five.

    Weather Report
The O's and Yankees are expecting heavy rain for their AL East Division tilt. Look for this one to be postponed, as their closer proximity to each other means a reschedule is a lot more palatable for both sides rather than a lengthy rain delay. The Brewers and Phillies will also be looking at significant rain chances of 70 percent or more, so expect a delay.

The Astros and Tigers needn't worry about rain, but wind will be the issue, gusting from 10-14 mph to straightaway center field.

    Tuesday, May 14

Since coming over from the Tampa Bay Rays, RHP Wilmer Font has allowed two earned runs, three hits and a homer over four innings. He is a pitcher without a lengthy track record, and it will take a village against the Washington Nationals.

Reds RHP Sonny Gray enters play against the Chicago Cubs with no victories over eight starts, and he has failed to post a quality start in four outings dating back to April 17 in Los Angelss against the Dodgers. The Reds are 0-3 over Gray's past three outings, and 2-6 in his eight starts this season.

Marlins RHP Jose Urena heads into play 1-5 with a 4.82 ERA across 46 2/3 innings, yielding 15 walks with 32 strikeouts. He was sharp last time out, allowing two runs - one earned - and five hits over seven innings in a no-decision at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs.

    Weather Report
The Brewers and Phillies will be bombarded with winds of 10-13 mph blowing in from the left-center field power alley. The Mets and Nationals also neede to hang onto thier hats, with 11-14 mphs gusts from left-center field to first base. Other than that, everything looks tip-top.

Milwaukee played the night game last night in a 4-1 loss at Chicago against the Cubs, and I suspect their bats will be a little tired tonight as they open on the road for a new series in Philadelphia. That is why I will side with the Under as my Monday comp play release on the diamond.

The Brewers played all 3 this past weekend at Wrigley Under the total, as the Under is 7-2 their last 9 games played!

Meanwhile, the Phillies wrapped up their interleague series in Kansas City against the Royals with just one run allowed over their last 18 innings pitched. All 3 in K.C. held Under, as Philadelphia returns home with Unders played in 4 straight, and 7 of their last 9 games overall.

Freddy Peralta is coming out of the bullpen for his first start since May 2nd, as he has had some rough turns thus far this season, as evidenced by his 6.75 ERA. Perhaps the 5 scoreless relief innings he worked on May 7th will give him the boost he needs to work another 5 or 6 tonight with limited damage done.

Aaron Nola is in a groove right now with 3 straight starts with no more than 1 run allowed. Nola is 3-0 with a 2.37 ERA in his 5 career starts against the Brewers too.

With both clubs trending low of late, and both teams having to travel to get back to tonight's game location, going to look for the pitching to dominate the hitting on Monday.

                Brewers-Phillies Under the total.

                2* MILWAUKEE-PHILADELPHIA UNDER

Comp play for Monday is the Over in the Houston-Detroit series opener from the Motor City.

The Astros are "denting the dish" with regularity right now, as they fresh off a home 4 game series sweep of the Rangers that saw them plate 33 runs - 26 of them coming over the last 2 games. They have won 8 of their last 9 games, as the Houston offense has blasted off big-time. A.J. Hinch's team is averaging an even 9 runs per game in those 8 wins, and while they may not get to that many runs tonight against Matthew Boyd, I don't see them being far off that pace.

Boyd has been a bright spot in the Detroit rotation, going 4-2 with a 2.86 ERA, and he is 2-0 for his career against Houston, but do note that his career ERA against the 'Stros is over 5.

Brad Peacock did dominate Kansas City at home in his last start, as he threw 7 scoreless innings with a whopping 12 strikeouts, but on the road this season it has been a different story for Peacock, as his road ERA stands at 5.52. The Over is 4-2-1 the last 7 starts that Peacock has made, and I think based on the way the Houston offense has been rolling we will see another Over in tonight's road start by Peacock.

Astros and Tigers to make their way Over the total for Monday night.

                  5* HOUSTON-DETROIT OVER

                    COMPLIMENTARY WINNER

My free play for Monday is on the UNDER in the American League mashup between the Houston Astros and Detroit Tigers.

IMPORTANT: As you know every single Run Line play and Total wager will automatically list the scheduled starting pitchers at the time of the wager, and I want you to be sure the following pitchers are the registered starters on your ticket when making your wager: Brad Peacock and Matthew Boyd. If one or both of these pitchers is not going, this is a no-play.

It's all about the pitching, as both of those guys will be at their best tonight. Peacock will be pitching well enough to keep the Astros on top of the American League West, as they arrive in Motown on an 8-2 run after winning five straight. The Tigers sit in third place in the A.L. Central, and could be on the verge of a hot streak that might propel them past the Cleveland Indians into second.

This series will define a lot for both teams.

Peacock steps to the mound after the best start of his career, last Wednesday, when he struck out 12 batters in seven scoreless innings against Kansas City. This is not surprising, although it was a career high, as he's always been a strikeout machine. His heat map has been phenomenal of late, and I expect him to frustrate the Tigers.

Boyd will answer the challenge tonight, as he gets the nod to start the three-game home set against Houston. He's been Detroit's most reliable starter thus far this season. The crafty left-hander has won his last two starts and hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in any of his eight outings. The challenge in facing a team like Houston will have him ramped up.

                    Play this one low.

                    4* UNDER Astros-Tigers

                          Presque Isle Downs - Race #1 - Post: 5:25pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $21,000 Class Rating: 92

                          Rating: Golden DollarGolden DollarGolden Dollar

                          #4 ATLANTIC SUN (GB) (ML=3/1)
                          #5 CITY PLAN (ML=2/1)
                          #2 FIRST REWARD (ML=5/2)

ATLANTIC SUN (GB) - Speed is always important in horse racing, but the lone speed horse is always dangerous. Taking a trip to a lower level; has the ability to make his presence felt. CITY PLAN - This animal is number one in earnings per start. He looks sharp in today's event. Came home in speedy time last time out. A positive sign. FIRST REWARD - Was in a $25,000 Claiming race at Tampa Bay Downs last time around the track. That event had a class figure of 99 and he is moving down in this race. A certain strong challenger. I think this gelding is coming into top form. I like the piece of information that this gelding's last rating, 93, is tops in this group.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 MURRY SPUR (ML=4/1),

MURRY SPUR - While Equibase's speed ratings are great, I would seriously discount the high one from the March 17th on the soft turf. Some entries just run well on the off going.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - FIRST REWARD - This gelding figures to be the bet versus these horses today, after notching a sharp final fraction in his last race.

                          STRAIGHT WAGERS:
Have to go with #4 ATLANTIC SUN (GB) on the win end if we get at least 7/2 odds

                            # 6 I'LL WRAP IT UP 6/1

                            # 3 NO CONTINGENCY 5/1

CALCULATED RISKER is the most respectable wager in this race. Ought to be given a chance here on the basis of the figs in the speed realm alone. A solid 96 avg Equibase class figure may give this horse a distinct class edge versus this field. Has been moving solidly and has among the best speed in the race for today's distance. I'LL WRAP IT UP - Could provide positive dividends based on solid recent speed figures with an average of 81. Has very good Equibase Class Figures relative to this group of animals - worth a look. NO CONTINGENCY - Haddock will most likely be able to get this gelding to break out sharply in this competition. Has raced solidly in dirt sprint races.

                              # 1 WAR KHAL 5/2

                              # 7 MRSHAKEY (T) 12/1

                              # 4 BOBAROUND 3/1

WAR KHAL looks to be a respectable contender. Has ran solidly in longer quarter horse races. He looks very good in this slot and I expect will be on the front end or close at the midpoint. With a nice Equibase class figure average of 87, has one of the top class advantages in this group. MRSHAKEY (T) - Looks very good for the conditions of this competition today, showing solid figs in longer quarter horse races recently. This horse has a very good win percent in longer quarter horses. BOBAROUND - Put up a formidable Equibase Speed Figure in the last race. Can run another good one in this contest. Have to suppose this horse will make a good showing following the quick turnaround.

                                #5 ROYAL'D (ML=6/1)

ROYAL'D - Nice return on investment for this jock and trainer tandem. Going on Lasix for the first time. While a common handicapping angle, it's still quite important to know.

                                Vulnerable Contenders: #2 FUSAICHI'S WIND (ML=5/2), #4 LITTLE BLAKER (ML=3/1), #1 WEST LEONARD (ML=4/1),

FUSAICHI'S WIND - This horse doesn't have a champion's spirit. Almost always finishes second or third. LITTLE BLAKER - This less than sharp equine didn't go to the front and didn't close ground down the homestretch last time he ran. On a downward series. Equibase speed figures keep declining. WEST LEONARD - Even though victorious in last, didn't finish the way you'd like to see when stepping up to face stronger opponents.

Top HatGUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - ROYAL'D - In my opinion, has the speed to gate-to-wire this field. With a competent ride by Feliciano, this one may hit the finish line first.
