List starting pitchers Perez and Harvey

      (973) Minnesota Twins at (974) Los Angeles Angels

Twins lefty Martin Perez (6-1, 2.89 ERA) has won five of his last six and done so surrendering less than two runs in five of his last seven. The Angels Matt Harvey found an offense he could contain to a middling degree and his mates supported him in a game against a inconsistent and rebuilding Kansas City Royals squad.

Perez, with his new pitch and his different approach to lineups has given u three runs just once in seven starts. Unlike the Angels the Twins southpaw contained a lineup, the Mariners, that do their best work at the plate against lefties. Perez tossed just short of seven innings and allowed one run in the victory over the Mariners. Again, Seattle has solid numbers against left-handed starters. The M's reached base nine times against Perez registering five hits while drawing four walks. And while underlying peripherals, via BABIP and HR/FB rates, point to Perez suffering regression moving forward, it is unlikely to come from Trout and the Halos.

So you know the whats and whys of Perez' improvement turned success this season. The velocity of his pitch array has seen a bump in mph. And his SS percentage increase has mitigated his fortune with balls hit in play. Note that to take advantage of Perez and his BABIP... that means making contact, hard contact, which the Angels do less against LHP than all but two teams on the junior circuit.

Perez has added a cutter to his repertoire, a pitch he didn't have before this season, and he is now throwing it 35 percent of the time and with success. cutter. Major League Baseball players are by nature habitual, creatures of routine, with some having strange superstitions.

Matt Harvey, was released by the New York Mets for two reasons in which one comes into play, each and every time Harvey takes the mound. First he was represented by an agent that is nothing short of nearly impossible to deal with. Secondly the former All-Star had lost, has being the correct three letter work, his ability to fool hitters. Harvey still tops out in the neighborhood of 95 mpb with his fastball. In the same breath he allows hard contact with the pitch to the tune of 35 percent.

When Harvey has survived his starts this season the Angels have given him little to no run support. Furthermore they have been ridiculously clumsy when facing lefties. LA is slashing .207/.293/.349 against lefthanders this season. And as ugly as their slash digits are their power numbers are worse. Trout and his mates have hit but 16 home runs in 487 official at-bats against lefties.

And note L.A. has not been facing the Kershaws and the Corbins of the league.

Los Angels has lost to LHP this season that include:

      A's: Brett Anderson
      M's: Marco Gonzalez
      Cubs: Cole Hamels
      Tex: Mike Minor
M's Yusei Kikuchi - a rookie for Seattle
Yanks: Jonathan Loaisiga - demoted to AAA
      Det: Matt Boyd
      O's: Jone Means
      Royals: Danny Duffy
      Tins: Taylor Rodgers

The Angels are 0-6 in their last 6 home games against a left-handed starter and are 3-10 in their last 13 games overall vs a left-handed starter.

Harvey's surface numbers match his under the table peripheral. The former Mets and Reds starter owned a 9.64 ERA through his first four starts. And while you will hear and read that the righty has begun to turn the corner and return to the form that makes him a serviceable starter at the big boy level. The truth is beating the Royals, his last start, allowing two runs on four hits with four walks over five-plus innings. Harvey has a 6.35 ERA heading into Wednesday's start against Minnesota.

To be completely transparent Harvey, his teammates and the coaching staff would agree with the fact he is not fooling any lineup and his 1.40 WHIP is representative of his current ability and form.

Harvey's strikeouts are below league average as well with 14% K and his BB/9IP (9% BB) is at a career high. Harvey is allowing hard contact at a 45 percent rate.

The Twins slash .263/.328/.498 versus right-handed pitching.

And one of the clutch bats for L.A. is out. Angels SS Andrelton Simmons (ankle) was placed on the 10-day injured list. And often injured DH Shohei Ohtani (finger) went 1-for-4 one day but is questionable for Wednesday' Utility man and catcher Kevan Smith (head) and his bat are unlikely for tonight's contest. Smith took a foul tip to the mask in the fourth inning of Tuesday's loss to the Twinkies and exited one frame later.

In a contest that I postured a money-line in the are of the visiting Twins with Perez on the mound as buck-forty favorites is currently closer to a pick'm than my projected handicap. Value, significant value, rests with the Twins and Perez

                      5* Game of the Month:

We have one of the league’s top lefties this season facing the Angles which are last in the MLB in profit versus southpaws going 1-14 (-9.5 units). Perez has a 2.01 ERA in his 7 starts since joining the rotation. Harvey was shelled early in April and while he allowed ‘only’ 4 runs in his last two starts covering 9 innings his WHIP in May was 1.54! This a play regardless of last night’s score but If they lost the Twins are 13-3 after a loss while going 8-1 after getting shutout the last 3 seasons.
