It has taken two months, but the Nationals are finally rounding into form winning seven of their last nine games. A key for the Nationals is a return to health of a number of key batters. The danger with backing the Nationals - who are averaging 6.5 runs during their last nine games - is their horrible middle and setup relief pitching and Dave Martinez, who I regard as the worst manager in the majors. Those negatives should be overcome by the Nationals hosting the White Sox and going with Stephen Strasburg. I can't lay the asking price, so I'll take a shot on the run line laying 1 1/2 runs at greatly reduced juice. The White Sox just concluded a 6-1 homestand. Prior to that, though, they were outscored 26-5 by the Twins in their last three road games. The White Sox's last nine defeats have all been by more than one run. Chicago is 6-21 in its last 27 interleague road games. The White Sox are going with Reynaldo Lopez, who is pitching against his former team. The flip side to Lopez's obvious extra motivation is the Nationals know him while the current White Sox are unfamiliar with Strasburg. Lopez is 3-5 with a 6.20 ERA. He has been at his worst on the road where his ERA is 7.78. The White Sox have lost in his last five road starts. Lopez is in bad current form, too, allowing 13 earned runs in his last two starts spanning 9 1/3 innings. By contrast, Strasburg has a 2.05 ERA in his last three starts. Strasburg has allowed two earned runs or less in seven of his last eight starts. He is an elite pitcher especially when pitching at Nationals Park. Washington is 29-10 (74 percent) in Strasburg's last 39 home starts versus sub .500 teams.

My pick in this race is RATFACE MACDOUGALL. Could provide positive returns based on respectable recent Speed Figures with an average of 79. Should come out solid - I have liked the way this gelding has moved sharply to the lead recently. The speed rating of 69 from his last affair looks formidable in here. COLONEL CANUCK - Has been running solidly lately and should be on or close to the lead early on. This gelding must be given consideration just off the earnings per start in dirt sprint contests alone. JIMMIES TRUCK - This lot is much easier than the last one he faced. With a competitive 69 Equibase Speed Figure last time out, will surely be a factor in this race.

BEST OF YOU - This filly usually does her best running late. Look for her last down the backstretch early in the race and finishing well on the tiring speed horses. Always beware of the longer priced animal when a trainer has an 'uncoupled' entry in a race. I like when a campaigner wins after shipping in from elsewhere. It shows that they really like the track here. I'll take this filly to win again. That was a dominant win last time out. In my opinion has a good chance to repeat today. PP lines show this thoroughbred with three improving speed ratings. Pilares should be on a live one in this event. DOLLY DEAR - Gonzalez was aboard this filly last time out and was impressed enough to take the animal right back. This filly garnered a good speed figure of 71 in her last event. That speed figure should be lofty enough to triumph today. BABY NINA - This filly looks like a natural router, based on efforts in last 2 sprint races. Have to give this filly a shot. Ran a solid effort last time out within the last month. I like this filly today. Good late run in the sprint race on May 17th at 6 furlongs. Is ranked at the top in earnings per start. A strong effort right here in this race can add to that bankroll.

DOUBLE D'S REVENGE - To me, when a vulnerable equine adds front bandages in her last affair, it's never a good sign. Difficult to bet on any animal to turn things around if there is no value to taking the chance.

INFORMALITY - I predict a gorgeous trip. Stalk the early pace, and make a bold move on the turn. This gelding is in nice physical condition, having run a nice race on May 20th, finishing first. Lead at every call in last race at Parx Racing. Good chance to repeat that effort right here. GRAYMOND - Nice return on investment for this rider and trainer duo. Trainer St Lewis moves this one to a lower class rank to face weaker company. Look for a solid race with this class drop.
