Let's head to Miller Park tonight for my free winner, as I like the National League Central battle between the Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers to go over th posted 8 1/2 runs.
Since every MLB wager on a run line or total auto-lists pitchers, I want you to be sure the two pitchers on your ticket, when making this play, are Luis Castillo and Jhoulys Chacin. If they are not the pitchers of record when making your play, disregard this play.
Both of those guys could have trouble, and early exits.
Believe it or not, the Reds have the better pitcher in Castillo (7-1, 2.26). Problem for him is that his worst start this season was at Miller Park on May 22 when he lasted a mere 2 2/3 innings during an 11-9 Reds loss. He took a no-decison, but the ace was still tagged for four runs on five hits - including two home runs with three walks.
Tonight he must deal with a Brewers lineup that is starving to break out of a slump. Milwaukee has lost 8 of 10 and has been outscored by 16 runs and is hitting just .230 in that span. Something tells me this is a good spot for the Brewers to come alive.
Meanwhile, Chacin came off the injured list last Monday and was respectable in 4 2/3 innings by allowing just two runs in a loss at San Diego. Still, he was a tad wild early in the game and threw 102 pitches. The right-hander is 3-8 with a 5.60 ERA on the year, and he catches a red-hot Cincy lineup that has outscored foes by 18 runs during a 7-3 streak.
I think this one is all offense, and soars past the number.
My free play for tonight is on the Chicago White Sox plus a big price against the Texas Rangers, and I want you to list the pitchers Odrisamer Despaigne and Lance Lynn. Believe this or not, I think Despaigne has the edge over Lynn in this particular game.
Despaigne has shown flashes of brilliance, albeit in innings, not games. Last weekend he pitched out of a first-inning jam against the New York Yankees. Then he allowed seven runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings. In first start with the team, he twirled a quality start against the Washington Nationals, allowing three earned runs in six innings, scattering seven hits.
Those games were at home. This one is on the road. Perhaps, maybe, the right-hander can focus better and bring his best stuff on the road. It happens, as I've seen it many times. The pressure of pitching at home is far greater because of the expectations of the crowd.
In Global Life Park, he's expected to hear jeers, and is expected to lose. So, he can block that out and bring his best stuff.
Lynn, meanwhile, is pitching phenomenal right now. The right-hander is 4-2 with a 2.92 ERA in his last eight starts, while averaging 11.35 strikeouts per nine innings. He could come in overconfident, and the South Siders could get to him early if he makes one too many mistakes.
