San Francisco Giants vs. San Diego Padres Preview and Predictions 07-02-2019 in MLB
The San Diego Padres saw a four-game winning streak vanish with a difficult loss Sunday. They'll hope for a quick rebound behind another of their promising young pitchers when they begin a three-game series with the visiting San Francisco Giants on Monday.
San Diego outscored opponents 33-11 during its four-game run and took a 3-0 lead into the sixth inning Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals, only to see the bats go quiet and the bullpen falter in a 5-3 loss in 11 innings. Manny Machado had a two-run homer in the loss and he has gone deep 10 times in a 15-game stretch for the Padres, raising his average 37 points in that span. Rookie Logan Allen has been stellar through his first two career starts for San Diego and will try to keep his run going in the series opener opposite San Francisco veteran Jeff Samardzija. The Giants salvaged the finale of a 3-4 homestand with a 10-4 win over Arizona on Sunday, riding Kevin Pillar's five RBIs to their fifth double-digit scoring effort of the year.

Samardzija suffered career loss No. 99 after giving up five runs over five innings against Colorado on Wednesday. That marked his fourth straight non-quality start, during which he's posted a 7.17 ERA. The 34-year-old opened his season with five solid innings in a no-decision at San Diego and has a 2.44 ERA in nine career games (eight starts) at Petco Park.
Allen tossed seven scoreless innings while yielding three hits in his debut in the majors June 18 against Milwaukee. He followed that up with six innings of two-run ball in a victory at Baltimore on Tuesday. The 22-year-old, who was part of the 2015 trade that sent closer Craig Kimbrel to Boston, has struck out five and walked two in each of his outings.
