Houston Astros vs. Texas Rangers Preview and Predictions 07-11-2019 in MLB

Lance Lynn looks to win his fifth straight start and sixth consecutive decision when the Texas Rangers open a four-game series against the visiting Houston Astros on Thursday. The stretch has raised Lynn's win total to 11 and he is on pace to surpass his career-best mark of 18 for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2012.

Lynn will attempt to slow down a Houston team that has the second-best record (57-33) in the American League and third in the majors. The Astros hold a 7 1/2-game lead over the Oakland Athletics in the American League West with the Rangers (48-42) sitting nine games out. Houston soared into the All-Star break with seven wins in its past eight games while Texas reached 10 games above .500 before losing six of its last eight before the break. Houston smacked the Rangers around in their last meeting, outscoring them 33-11 in a four-game home sweep from May 9-12.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros TBD vs. Rangers RH Lance Lynn (11-4, 3.91 ERA)

Houston hasn't decided on a starting pitcher for the opener of the series despite announcing Gerrit Cole, Wade Miley and Justin Verlander will start the final three games. Brad Peacock (shoulder) is on the injured list and Jose Urquidy was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock on Wednesday, the latter move perhaps signaling that left-hander Framber Valdez (3-4, 4.57 ERA) will be recalled on Thursday to make the start. The 25-year-old Valdez has started four games for the Astros (out of 18 appearances) but was torched for 11 runs over 6 1/3 innings while losing his last two big league starts in the latter part of June.

Lynn has been consistently good, allowing two or fewer runs in seven of his past 10 starts. The 32-year-old has struck out 30 and walked just two during his four-start winning streak and issued one or fewer bases on balls in 10 of his last 11 outings. Lynn lost to the Astros on May 10 when he gave up three runs and six hits over seven innings and stands 4-2 with a 2.20 ERA in eight career appearances (seven starts) against Houston.

WALK-OFFS

1. Astros All-Star OF Michael Brantley posted four-hit outings in each of his last two games before the break.

2. Rangers OF Joey Gallo (20 homers) went deep in Tuesday's All-Star Game but was just 3-for-18 with 12 strikeouts in his final five games before the break.

3. Houston All-Star OF George Springer (18 homers) failed to hit one into the seats in his last nine games prior to the break.

Edmonton Eskimos vs. BC Lions Preview and Predictions 07-11-2019 in CFL

The BC Lions look to build on their first win of the season when they host the Edmonton Eskimos on Thursday in a West Division clash. Sergio Castillo's single off a missed field goal as time expired handed the Lions an 18-17 victory over the Toronto Argonauts in Week 4 and they hope to climb up the West Division standings by avenging a 39-23 loss to the Eskimos on June 21.

"He missed it but he got enough on it to give us a point and we came out with a win," BC coach DeVone Claybrooks told reporters. "It's a step in the right direction and as long as the guys keep working and keep believing then we'll continue to get better." Edmonton won its first two games of the season before dropping a 28-21 decision to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Week 3. The Eskimos, who were off last week, scored eight offensive touchdowns in their first two wins, but were held to seven field goals against Winnipeg, and hope to clinch the season series against the Lions, which could loom large in November after they missed the playoffs in 2018 because of BC holding the tiebreaker. "We want to treat every game as important regardless of who it is but in terms of the standings and season series that stuff does come into play," Edmonton quarterback Trevor Harris told reporters. "We just have to execute, be us and do what we can to win the game."

ABOUT THE ESKIMOS (2-1): Harris was named one of the CFL's Top Performers for the month of June after throwing for 1,086 yards and six touchdowns without an interception en route to leading Edmonton to a 2-1 record. Linebacker Christophe Mulumba-Tshimanga was added to the active roster after starting 2019 on the six-game injured list and could make his season debut while offensive lineman Jacob Ruby is set to return after a two-game injury absence. C.J. Gable, who leads the team with 347 rushing yards, is questionable after missing practice with a lower-body injury while Edmonton added offensive lineman Eric Lofton to the practice squad.

ABOUT THE LIONS (1-3): Mike Reilly threw for 272 yards and a touchdown in the win against Toronto to become the 26th quarterback since 1950 to start 100 regular-season games. Lemar Durant continued his stellar start to the season as he hauled in nine passes for 125 yards and a touchdown while John White added 138 rushing yards and a TD. Bryan Burnham, who has caught at least one pass in 68 consecutive games, is questionable after missing the Week 4 win with a lower-body issue while defensive end Odell Willis recorded a sack against the Argonauts and is one shy of becoming the 12th player is league history to reach 100 for his career.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Edmonton has dropped seven straight road games dating back to last season.

2. Durant has caught a touchdown pass in each of his first four games in 2019.

3. The Eskimos have committed a league-high 46 penalties this season.

I think RACING ROOM is a respectable choice. Will most likely come out solid - I have liked the way this filly has moved speedily to the front end recently. Her earnings per start in dirt sprint events alone makes you take a look at her. The handler wheels this one back in next to no time to race again. MY SECSEA SENORITA - Desautel is trying to prove victorious with this entrant by bringing her back so soon. She should have a strong performance versus this easier bunch. DOLLIYS GOLD - Has to be carefully examined as she drops to compete against this easier lot. The handler wheels this one back quickly to race again.

MAGGIE'S GUY - Gelding took a little vacation, but has been racing into shape. PP lines show this thoroughbred with 3 improving speed figures. Natera should be on a horse ready to win right here in this race. WILD RADAR - Possibly a peak effort for this gelding today. Been getting closer at the finish with each recent start. It looks like Galviz had to 'know' this gelding on Jun 20th when riding him for the first time. Back on again today. Faced tougher last time around the track at Century Mile. Based on class ratings, this is a weaker group, so I will put this horse on my list of strong contenders. Gelding took a little vacation, but has been racing into shape. This gelding is in nice form. Ran third on June 20th. Three consecutive improved Equibase speed figs (56-66-76) make this horse a solid contender. RUCK - The June 30th clash at Century Mile was at a class level of (91). Dropping down in class considerably, so he should be in a good spot. A horse coming back this rapidly after a strong race is a good sign. He has the top earnings per start. Take a long look at this animal. Recent Equibase speed figures show powerful pattern of improvement. FIRST ROUND DRAFT - I like a thoroughbred that manages to hit the board as often as this gelding. Almost always in the money so don't leave him out of your exotic bets.

CHISUM G - Last ran on Jun 29th at Century Mile, finishing sixth. Unlikely to get better off of that try today. This gelding notched a speed rating in his last race which likely isn't good enough in today's event. COMMAND THE LAND - Tough to go with this horse at 7 furlongs after displaying no early speed at 1 mile. Not likely for this entrant to make an impact with no recent good showings in a short distance race.

O FOUR EXPRESS could be the bet in here. Is a solid contender based on figures earned as of late under today's conditions. Will almost certainly come out solid - I have liked the way this mare has moved promptly to the lead recently. Have to consider solely on class, with some of the top class figures of this group. SHA BLUSH - Reason to like this filly as she has in the saddle one of the best jocks using winning percentages over the last 30 days. This horse has a excellent win percent in dirt sprints. SARAH ELISE - Has a very strong record at the distance and surface, which makes me have to consider this mare. Sanchez will probably be able to get this mare to break out sharply in this event.
