The Oakland Athletics carved out a walkoff win against the Milwaukee Brewers in a close one last night. The A's held on for their 61st win of the season to give them sole possession of the final wildcard in the American League.
Tonight's pitching matchup is very intriquing. The Brewers are sending Jordan Lyles to the mound as he comes over from the Pirates for added depth since all the Brewers starting pitchers are hurt. His pitching numbers over the last month are too horrific to even post here so we'll spare you having to read them. What you do need to know is that a change of scenery could be exactly what he needed. After all, he was playing for the Pirates. He also spent last year in the bullpen for the Brewers during their playoff run. That means there is a certain familiarity with the clubhouse and team. Think of it as a chance to be reborn for Jordan.
Now he gets thrown into a tough spot on the road with a new/old team. His teammates however, have quite the history against the person taking the mound for the A's tonight. That means that Jordan might actually see some run support for a change.
Brett Anderson hits the rubber for the A's and the Brewers have hammered Anderson in the past. The current roster is hitting a combined .432 with a .479 OBP against him in 44 at-bats. There are six players on the Milwaukee roster who are hitting greater than .500 vs Anderson in their careers. He hasn’t exactly been killing it either. Anderson goes into this matchup with an ERA of 5.19 in his last three outings.
Also note that he hans't exactly loved pitching at home as Anderson has been below average at home with a 4.75 ERA and 1.51 WHIP.
Jordan Lyles has a chance to succeed here. Lefties have a .416 wOBA against him this season. Righties only have a .311 wOBA and the A’s are pretty right-handed-heavy on the whole. Brett Anderson is a contact management guy and the current Brewers hitters have had plenty of success making contact against him.
I'm betting the Brewers to take one on the road tonight and finally provide Jordan Lyles with some run support. This is the perfect spot for him to rebound.
Go with the Brewers who provide great value on the ML tonight
