The Dodgers (74-40) have enjoyed a huge lead in the NL West for quite a while, which has allowed them to start auditioning pitchers for their staff come playoff time. Tony Gonsolin (0-1, 5.63 ERA) is next to try out when the Cardinals (58-52) come to town.
Although Gonsolin managed a four-inning save against the Rockies, he gave up six total runs in a four-inning loss to the Diamondbacks in his lone career start in June. Gonsolin’s inexperience looks to be good news for the road-dog Cardinals.
St. Louis will give the ball to Michael Wacha (6-5, 5.15 ERA), who’s walked two or fewer batters in each of his last nine appearances. The Cardinals right-hander has been good against the likes of Joc Pederson, holding the Dodgers hitter to a .214 average in 14 at-bats.
The Cardinals are happy to have back both Matt Carpenter and Marcell Ozuna, who leads the club with 62 RBIs. Catcher Yadier Molina is still out, but Matt Weiters has been very good in his stead. On top of throwing out 47% of potential base stealers, Weiters is batting .271 with five homers since the All-Star break.
