CFL Betting Notes - Week 10
      David Schwab

      Week 9 Betting Recap

Last week’s action in the CFL got underway on Thursday night with Winnipeg slipping past Calgary 26-24 as a 7 ½-point home favorite to remain at the top of the standings in the West Division title race.

Friday’s doubleheader of betting action started with Saskatchewan going on the road as a three-point favorite and knocking off Montreal 17-10. Later that night, Edmonton kept pace in the West by beating Ottawa 16-12, but the Eskimos could not cover the closing 9 ½-point spread. Hamilton closed out Week 9 on Saturday night with a 35-34 victory at home against British Columbia. The Tiger-Cats also failed to cover as 9 ½-point favorites.

      Friday, Aug. 16

Edmonton Eskimos (5-3 SU, 3-5 ATS) at Toronto Argonauts (1-6 SU, 3-4 ATS)
      Point-spread: Edmonton -10
      Total: 50

      Game Overview

After failing to cover against Ottawa, the Eskimos are 1-3 ATS in their last four games. The total stayed UNDER 49 points in Friday’s win and it has stayed UNDER in their last six games. Edmonton is 1-3 ATS in four previous road games this season. CJ Gable was the difference on Friday night with 116 yards rushing and a pair of scores on 18 rushing attempts. Trevor Harris completed 33-of-40 passing attempts for 327 yards, but he could not get Edmonton into the end zone through the air. He leads the CFL in total passing yards with 2,631 in eight games.

Toronto is coming off a bye after posting its first win of the season the week before against Winnipeg. The Argonauts stunned the Blue Bombers 28-27 as heavy 15-point home underdogs. They have covered in three of their last five games with the total staying UNDER in four of the seven games played. Toronto has closed as a double-digit underdog in five of its last six games. Mcleod Bethel-Thompson has taken the majority of the snaps at quarterback and he has tossed 10 touchdowns against nine interceptions.

      Betting Trends

-- Edmonton won the first meeting this season 26-0 as an 11-point home favorite. This was its sixth SU win against Toronto in the last eight meetings. The total stayed UNDER 52 points in that game, but it has gone OVER in 10 of the last 14 games in this inter-division tilt.

                MLB | Padres vs Phillies
Play on: Phillies -102 at 5Dimes

Who is the best everyday player on the San Diego Padres? Hint: It's not Manny Machado. In my view it's clearly rookie shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., who in 84 games is leading the Padres in batting with a .317 average, has smacked 22 homers, driven in 53 runs, scored 61 runs and stolen 16 bases. The dynamic rookie, though, injured his back against the Rays this past Tuesday and isn't expected to play. That's a big blow for the Padres. It's one of several reasons why I'm perplexed seeing this opening line. The Phillies should be strong home favorites against the Padres here. But they are not. So I'm getting involved backing Philadelphia The pitching matchup is Chris Paddack versus Vince Velasquez. Paddack has a 3.95 road ERA compared to a 2.53 home ERA. San Diego is 2-6 in his last eight road starts. Velasquez has been pitching better. He's allowed seven earned runs in his past four starts with 21 strikeouts in 22 2/3 innings during this span. The Phillies are the superior offensive team. They are averaging seven runs in their last four games and they have also bolstered their bullpen. The Padres have dropped nine of their past 13 away contests. San Diego has a weak history, too, when playing in Philadelphia losing 13 of the last 18 times.

The MLB Comp Play is on the LA. Dodgers at 7;20 eastern. The Dodgers fit a nice system here tonight that lays on road teams that lost as a -200 or higher road favorite despite scoring 5 or more runs vs a team like the Braves coming off a loss. This system has cashed 82% long term. This is a nice battle of 2 first place teams and Maeda has pitched well vs the Braves. Look for the Dodgers to bounce back tonight. For the MLB Free la tonight. Play on the Dodgers. RV- GC Sports

Chicago White Sox ace Lucas Giolito (12-6 3.42 ERA) takes on the Los Angeles Angels and newcomer Patrick Sandoval (0-0 5.59 ERA). Giolito has been pretty strong over his last three starts, allowing six earned runs in 19 innings (2.84 ERA). Sandoval will be making his third appearance and just his second start. In his only other start, Sandoval allowed six hits and four earned runs in 4.2 innings against the struggling Boston Red Sox (also walked four). Mike Trout and the Angels' offense (averaging 7.3 runs per game over their last three games) will look to give Sandoval another rough outing today. The Angels are 17-3 SU at home in their last 20 games against the White Sox, and 6-0 SU overall.
