I like the price we are getting on the Padres tonight. They have won four of their last five despite being dogs in three of them. And Cal Quantrill has been one of the best starters in baseball since the All-Star Break. Quantrill is 4-1 with a 1.31 ERA in his last six starts. The Reds have fallen out of playoff contention and just aren’t playing good baseball right now. They are 2-7 in their last nine games overall. Give me the Padres.

I think the public will have a hard time backing the Cardinals with Michael Wacha on the mound. There's not a lot to like, as he's got a 5.40 ERA in 16 starts and a 9.00 ERA and 2.00 WHIP in his last 3 starts. However, the big thing to keep in mind is that 11 of Wacha's 16 starts have come on the road. He's made just one start at home since June. I like that's he facing a Brewers team that managed just 1 hit while getting shutout in the series opener. St Louis has also won 8 of 10 are 10-4 in Wacha's last 14 home starts and 7-2 in his last 9 at home vs a team with a winning record. Give me the Cardinals -104!

For the Giants tonight we get Righty Tyler Beede on the mound. He has a 3-7 record with a 5.77 ERA. On the other side we get lefty Cole Hamels who is 6-4 with a 3.69 ERA.
Last game out Beede yielded four runs and eight hits with five strikeouts in four-plus innings of a 9-5 loss to Oakland. This is the start of a 6-game homestand for the Cubbies and Chicago starters have yielded one run in their last four games over 27 innings, lowering the unit's ERA to 3.99 this season. Look for that trend to continue.
Some other trends of note, the Giants are 0-5 in Beedes last 5 starts. Cubs are 13-6 in Hamels' last 19 starts, are 38-15 in their last 53 home games vs. a right-handed starter, and 24-8 in their last 32 home games vs. a team with a winning record.

The Twins (76-49) have a 19.5-game advantage over the White Sox (56-68) in the AL Central, but Chicago was able to take the first game of this series by a score of 6-4 yesterday. We’ll see if Minnesota can get back on track at home this evening.
The biggest issue the Twins had on Monday was leaving runners stranded. Although they outhit the White Sox, Minnesota left 10 men on base.
White Sox right-hander Reynaldo Lopez (7-10, 5.29 ERA) will try to frustrate the Twins lineup once again. Before his last outing against the Angels, Lopez was holding a 2.13 ERA through his six previous starts.
If Lopez can help the White Sox to a lead going into the ninth, don’t expect a comeback. When leading after eight innings, the White Sox are now 44-0 this season.
On the mound for Minnesota will be Michael Pineda (8-5, 4.20 ERA). In six career starts against Chicago, Pineda is 3-3 with a 3.08 ERA. The Twins right-hander allowed three runs on six hits in five innings his last time out.

Really like the value here with Oakland as a decently priced home dog in Tuesday's series opener against the Yankees. The A's just took 3 of 4 at home against the Astros and were a dog in every game of that series.
This team is playing too well to be priced like this. Oakland was sitting at 36-36 back on June 16th. Fast forward a little over two months and they are working on a 35-17 run. New York during this same time frame is just slight better at 40-16.
Yankees will start righty Domingo German. While the Yankees have won each of his last 8 starts, only two of those were against a team that would be in the postseason if it started today. German owns a poor 5.58 ERA in 11 road starts and Oakland is 20-7 in their last 27 vs a right-handed starter.
A's are 72-35 dating back over previous season at home. They are also 19-7 in their last 26 off a loss and 13-3 in their last 16 in the first game after a day off. Take Oakland!

I'm doing something I haven't done in six years - back Homer Bailey. Actually, it's not nearly Bailey but the A's I want going for me in this opener of a three-game series being played in Oakland. The Yankees are traveling east to west. They do not have a good history in Oakland where they have lost six of the last seven times. A lot of the power hitting AL East teams have problems dealing not only with the three-hour time change but the spacious dimensions of Oakland Coliseum.
The A's have won 67 percent of their last 107 home games. They are 13-3 following an off day and 20-7 the past 27 times at home when going against a righty starter. New York is throwing righthanded Domingo German. German leads the majors in wins with 16. He also has nearly a 4.00 ERA and is due for regression. The Yankees are not a team I like to go against. Do note, though, their impressive 83-43 record is bolstered by going 17-2 against the Orioles. Bailey always is live to come up with a clunker. But he is a good fit when pitching in Oakland where not all of his mistakes are costly because of the ballpark configuration. Bailey has had five good performances during his past seven starts and is coming off a two-hit, seven inning shut out of the Giants this past Thursday with a 7-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. That game was at Oracle Park, another pitcher's park. Bailey has tamed the Yankees before beating them 6-1 at Yankee Stadium in April.

When German takes the mound, the Yankees win (have won eight-straight starts by German). Aside from one rought outing against the Twins, German has pitched really well over his last eight starts (13 earned runs in 43 innings, not counting the Twins game). Bailey has allowed 21 earned runs over his last 26.1 innings (7.17 ERA). The Yankees are 16-4 SU in their last 20 games and are averaging more than 6.7 runs per game in August. Baseball's number one scoring offense should put up plenty of run support today to get another win with German on the mound.
