            1* on Philadelphia Phillies +148
The Key: The Braves have the NL East locked up. They can’t be this heavily favored over the Phillies, who are 3 games back in the wild card and fighting for their playoff lives. Jason Vargas has been great at home all season with a 3.21 ERA in his 13 home starts this year. Max Fried has a 4.91 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in his 13 road starts for the Braves. Fried has an 8.10 ERA and 1.90 WHIP in 2 starts against the Phillies this year. Vargas tossed 7 shutout innings in his last home start against the Braves. Take Philadelphia.

LEADING OFF: Astros romping, Trout out, long games
                      September 10, 2019
                      By The Associated Press

A look at what's happening around the majors today:

                      HOUSTON HAMMERS

Rookie Yordan Alvarez and the Houston Astros have set a franchise record by totaling 36 runs in their last two games, helped by exceptionally fast starts.

On Sunday, the AL West leaders built a whopping 13-0 cushion in the first three innings on their way to a 21-1 rout of Seattle - Alvarez had three doubles and a single and drove in six runs.

On Monday night, Alvarez homered in each of the first two innings as Houston rushed to an 11-0 lead. The Astros hit seven homers overall and pounded Oakland 15-0.

The Astros have won five in a row and next take on A's righty Tanner Roark (9-8, 3.86 ERA). Wade Miley (13-4, 3.35) starts for host Houston.

                      TROUT OUT

Angels star Mike Trout has undergone a cryoablation procedure to alleviate pain in his right foot. Manager Brad Ausmus described the procedure as relatively minor and said the slugging outfielder could return later this series against Cleveland.

Trout has been bothered by nerve pain in his foot for several weeks, but has largely played through it. The cryoablation procedure uses extreme cold to essentially deaden the tissue around the irritated nerve.

Trout is batting .291 with an AL-leading 45 homers and 104 RBIs. His .438 on-base percentage leads the majors.

                      NICE START

Touted prospect Nico Hoerner had three hits and four RBIs in his big league debut, helping the Cubs increase their lead for the second NL wild-card spot.

Hoerner also made some nice plays at shortstop Monday night as Chicago beat San Diego 10-2 to snap a three-game losing streak. The Cubs lead Milwaukee by two games.

The 22-year-old Hoerner, the Cubs' first-round draft pick out of Stanford in 2018, was promoted from Double-A Tennessee earlier in the day because All-Star shortstop Javier Baez and Addison Russell are sidelined by injuries.

                      WELCOME BACK

Giants right-hander Johnny Cueto makes his season debut after recovering from Tommy John surgery. The two-time All-Star hasn't pitched in a major league game since July 28, 2018. He starts at home against Pittsburgh.

                      CLOCKED

Big league bullpens are full this month, boosted by September call-ups, and a plethora of pitching changes is contributing to longer and longer games.

The Brewers beat Miami 8-3 Monday night in a matchup that took 4 hours, 8 minutes. The game featured 15 pitchers who combined for 14 walks.

On Sunday, the Phillies topped the Mets 10-7 in 4:29 - one minute from matching the longest nine-inning NL game. Each team used eight pitchers and the clubs used up all 16 dozen baseballs that were prepped pregame, forcing another couple dozen to be rubbed up and put in play.

                      MATCHED UP

The Braves have won 90 games this year, matching their total from last season when they took the NL East. At 90-55, they lead the division by 9 1/2 games over Washington.

''It's a very good number, that's for sure,'' Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said. ''We've got a lot of baseball to play, so hopefully we get a lot more.''

Lefty Max Fried (16-4, 3.86 ERA) tries to add to Atlanta's total when he starts at Philadelphia against Jason Vargas (6-7, 4.27).

The Arizona Diamondbacks are only 2.5 games out of the wild card right now. They have come on strong down the stretch with an 11-3 run in their last 14 games overall. I like the price we are getting on the Diamondbacks here Tuesday. Zac Gallen has been great all season with a 2.50 ERA in his 13 starts. He has been one of Arizona’s best starters since they traded for him prior to the deadline. Zack Wheeler is 10-7 with a 4.27 ERA in 27 starts for the Mets. He gave up 4 runs in 7 innings to the Diamondbacks in his only start against them this season. Arizona is 5-1 in Gallen’s last six starts. New York is 2-8 in its last 10 home games. Give me the Diamondbacks.

The Houston Astros hit a club record-tying seven home runs when they opened this series with a 15-0 triumph Monday night. Here they'll get a look at Oakland righty Tanner Roark who has a 4.10 ERA in 12 road starts on the season.
Roark (9-8, 3.86 ERA) served up two homers when he gave up four runs in six innings at Kansas City his last start away from home and he is winless on the road since coming over from Cincinnati.
As for Houston starter Wade Miley (13-4, 3.35 ERA), the left-hander is 7-1 with a 2.84 ERA in 13 home starts on the season, despite allowing a season-high five runs without recording a single out his home start against Seattle last Thursday. We can note that Houston still won that contest 11-9, and Miley has dominated Oakland this year with just 12 hits and four runs allowed over 19 2/3 innings of work for a 1.83 ERA.
Astros are 10-2 in their last 12 home games vs. a team with a winning road record and 13-3 in Miley's last 16 starts when their opponent allows five runs or more in their previous game.

Play on: Cardinals -139 at GTBets

                              Cardinals
The St. Louis Cardinals are pulling away in the National League Central and are trying to take advantage of a soft spot in the schedule before a closing stretch that will see them play 16 straight against teams with winning records. The Cardinals will try to get started on a seventh consecutive series win when they visit the Colorado Rockies in the opener of a three-game set on Tuesday.
St. Louis, which owns a four-game lead over the Cubs in the NL Central but still has seven contests left against the club, took two of three from Pittsburgh over the weekend and is thriving on the mound with a total of two runs allowed in its last five wins.
PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (6-6, 4.98 ERA) vs. Rockies RH Chi Chi Gonzalez (0-6, 7.29)
Wacha was pushed up to start on three days of rest against San Francisco on Wednesday and yielded two hits in two scoreless innings. The Texas A&M product was impressive in his last full start, holding Cincinnati to two runs - both on solo homers - and three hits in seven innings Aug. 31. Wacha did not stick around long enough to qualify for a win against Colorado on Aug. 25, when he surrendered three runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Gonzalez is still looking for his first win of the season but turned in a quality start at Los Angeles last Tuesday, when he held the Dodgers to two runs and three hits in 6 1/3 innings without factoring in the decision. That represented a strong bounce back for the 27-year-old, who was ripped for seven runs and seven hits in two-thirds of an inning against Pittsburgh in his previous turn. Gonzalez did not have much success at St. Louis on Aug. 24, when he was charged with five runs in 4 1/3 innings and absorbed a loss.
Cardinals are 7-1 in their last 8 vs. National League West. Rockies are 1-10 in their last 11 vs. National League Central.
Take the Cardinals on the road.

10* FREE MLB PICK (Giants -118)
I'll take my chances here with San Francisco as a small home favorite against the Pirates. Giants will be sending out veteran Johnny Cueto and you know he's been working hard to get back out there. Cueto has lost 20+ pounds and is just under 220 after coming in at 240 before.
He may struggle here, but there's also a chance he performs well. Not like he forgot how to pitch. He's 20-5 with a 2.28 ERA in 31 starts vs Pittsburgh. Even if he doesn't do great, I think the Giants offense will put up enough runs to get the win. Pittsburgh will have Mitch Keller on the mound and he's struggled in his 8 starts. He's got a 8.18 ERA and 1.879 WHIP. It's even worse on the road. He's got a 11.95 ERA and 2.410 WHIP in 5 starts away from home. Give me the Giants -118!
