Backup quarterback Kyle Allen gets the start against the Arizona Cardinals. Note: Kyle Allen beat out Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray for the starting quarterback job at Texas A&M. But Carolina’s go to guy is still RB Christian McCaffrey. This player is all everything. The Panthers offense should have success. The problem for the Cardinals (our gain) is their defense giving up an average of 477.5 total yards per game. That’s a great recipe for the upset. Arizona will find out today that it’s hard to win games when the defense is getting lit up on a weekly basis. The Panther defense is very capable of stepping up and stopping running back David Johnson and focusing on Kyler Murray. The defensive advantage goes to Carolina. Look out but don’t be surprised how a desperate 0-2 team may play with a healthy capable quarterback and the heroic play and leadership of
Christian McCaffrey.

Last week, there was plenty of the good and bad as Baker Mayfield had five completions of 25 or more yards, with perhaps his best one a 25-yard strike over the middle to Jarvis Landry that set up Austin Siebert’s 43-yard field goal. Odell Beckham finished with 161 receiving yards and their offense should continue to go full speed. Defensively, Browns LB Joe Schobert will be very busy stopping Todd Gurley but who’s better? The Browns’ success will hinge mainly on Myles Garrett getting to Jared Goff with his disruptive skills. Cleveland has the balance which really hasn’t been shown on offense. While understandable that Mayfield is the first name that comes up when talking about the Browns offense, there is still a sense that RB Nick Chubb has barely scratched the surface of his potential as he enters his second year as the featured running back (the Rams had difficulties containing Christian McCaffrey in Week 1). The staff has been working with Mayfield to throw the ball a second quicker. That should help him from forcing some errant throws and actually balance the playing field to short, long and screen or run. That will also get Jarvis Landry more involved. Their plan tonight is about taking what the Rams give Mayfield underneath, which means opportunities for Chubb out of the backfield and Harris on short routes as Mayfield’s check-down option. If they can drag Littleton out of position in the middle of the field, Beckham and Landry could also find success on shallow crossing routes or Beckham could go deeper. Cleveland can move the chains running the ball and keeping the Rams offense off the field. That is their best path to a solid victory tonight.
