Houston Astros vs. New York Yankees Preview and Predictions 10-15-2019

The New York Yankees failed in their opportunity to take a stranglehold of the American League Championship Series, but were able to gain home-field advantage as the Houston Astros with Gerrit Cole on the mound pay a visit for Game 3 on Tuesday afternoon. The Yankees rolled to a 7-0 victory in Game 1 before Carlos Correa's walk-off homer in the 11th inning gave the Astros a 3-2 victory Sunday and evened the series as it moves to New York for the next three contests.

"Time to regroup and get ready for Tuesday," Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge, who belted a two-run homer Sunday, told reporters. "I always like our chances going home, especially for three. It's time to roll. It's the postseason. We're going to get it done." Brett Gardner had two of New York's six hits Sunday while teammate Gleyber Torres is 9-for-22 in the playoffs with six extra-base hits and nine RBIs. Correa also had an RBI double in Game 2 for Houston and former MVP Jose Altuve has been the hottest hitter for the Astros in the postseason with 10 hits (three homers) in 27 at-bats with five RBIs. "We're in the second round of what could be a seven-round fight," Houston manager A.J. Hinch told reporters after the win. "Obviously, we know what's at stake. The emotions are real out there. The intensity, our fans were incredible these two games. We're going into a crazy environment at Yankee Stadium tied 1-1."

    TV: 4:08 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Gerrit Cole (2-0, 0.57 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Luis Severino (0-0, 0.00)

Cole was dominant in two starts during the AL Division Series against Tampa Bay, allowing one run on six hits and three walks with 25 strikeouts across 15 2/3 innings. The 29-year-old UCLA product, who is 18-0 in 24 starts (postseason included) since May 22, led the majors with 326 strikeouts in the regular season and also finished with career bests in wins (20), ERA (2.50) and innings pitched (212 1/3). Giancarlo Stanton is 3-for-10 with two doubles and a homer versus Cole, who gave up three runs over seven innings in a no-decision against the Yankees on April 9.

Severino gave up four hits and two walks over four scoreless innings with four strikeouts in Game 3 of the ALDS in Minnesota after being limited to three outings in the regular season because of injuries. The 25-year-old Dominican Republic native permitted two runs on six hits and six walks over 12 innings in September after going 19-8 with a 3.39 ERA in 2018. Josh Reddick is 5-for-11 with three doubles against Severino, who was 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA over two starts against Houston in 2018.

    WALK-OFFS

    1. The Astros led the majors with a .274 batting average in the regular season, but are hitting .218 in the postseason.

    2. Stanton, who had two hits including a homer in Game 1, was held out Sunday with a right quad strain and is considered day-to-day.

    3. Houston OF-DH Yordan Alvarez is 0-for-7 in the series with five strikeouts, giving him 12 in seven postseason contests.

    PREDICTION: Astros 3, Yankees 2

Play on: Flyers +138 at BMaker

      Flyers ML
On Tuesday at 9:00 p.m. the (2-0-1) Philadelphia Flyers will take the ice against the Calgary Flames (2-3-1) at Scotiabank Saddledome. The lines have the Flyers coming in as the underdog at -115 while the Flames are the -165 favorites on their home ice. The total sits at 6. After crunching some numbers, I think this one has upset written all over it.
After winning two consecutive games against New Jersey and Chicago, Philly fell 2-3 in a shootout at Vancouver. The Flyers outshot the Canucks 32-24 but only managed to win 27 of 61 faceoffs. Philadelphia was able to put the puck in the net on one of their three power-play opportunities while keeping Vancouver out of the net both times they were forced to skate a man down. Philadelphia is scoring an average of 3.33 goals per game while giving up 1.67 goals to their opponents. They have been able to fire 34.7 shots per game while being stingy on the defensive end of the ice, holding their opponents to just 26.7. They’ve been able to light up the lantern on four power-play opportunities while only giving up one goal while skating with a man in the box.
The Flames lost 1-3 on the road to San Jose on Sunday. Calgary outshot the Sharks 33-20 but only won 28 of 61 faceoffs. Calgary has been able to score an average of 2.33 goals per game while giving up 3.33. They are taking 31 shots per game while giving up 32. They have a 15% PP% and have given up 4 goals while skating a man down this season.
Some trends to consider. The Flyers are 8-2 previous 10 vs. team with a losing record, and are 4-0 last four when their opponents scored 2 goals or less previous game. Calgary is 1-5 previous six games as a favorite, and are 0-5 their last five after scoring two goals or less in previous game.
      Back the Flyers.
      Good Luck, Razor Ray.

MIKE LUNDIN'S FLYERS @ FLAMES FREE PICK OCTOBER 15
The Philadelphia Flyers took a 3-2 shootout loss versus Vancouver on Saturday. I like them to bounce back with a win here against a Calgary Flames side that has dropped three of its last four, the most recent game a 3-1 setback at San Jose on Sunday.
The Flames have struggled to find the net while the Flyers have been excellent on the defensive end of the ice giving up under 27 shots and 1.67 goals per game. For this game the visitors will give goaltender Brian Elliott his season debut, and he has gone 9-4 with a 1.96 GAA in previous meetings with the Flames.
Offensively the Flyers have tested opponents netminders with nearly 35 shots per game and Flames netminder David Rittich has had a poor start to the season, allowing at least four goals in three of his five starts.
Calgary won both meetings last season, but the value is without a doubt on the Flyers in this matchup.
        Free pick on Philadelphia Flyers.

                Streaky Teams

Wins and Losses Streak Over/Under Streak
Buffalo 5-0-1 past six games overall Anaheim Under 5-1 past six games

New Jersey 0-4-2 past six games overall Nashville Over 5-0 past five games

                West Coast Fair

The Carolina Hurricanes opened the season with a 5-0-0 record in their first five games for the first time in franchise history. They won their fifth game by a 5-2 score against the New York Islanders this past Friday, but fell 3-2 at home in the second end of a back-to-back against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Now, they'll head out on the road for an early-season west-coast swing.

If you ever wondered why it seems the Hurricanes are always on a lengthy road trip to begin the season, it's due to the North Carolina State Fair. PNC Arena and Carter-Finley Stadium, where N.C. State football plays, are right next to the state fairgrounds. The parking for the state fair uses the lots for Carter-Finley and PNC Arena, so the Hurricanes are on the road in the middle of October every season. They head to Los Angeles on Tuesday, San Jose on Wednesday and Anaheim on Friday before traveling to Columbus on Oct. 24 after six days off. Their next home game isn't until Oct. 26, a matinee battle against the Chicago Blackhawks.

                Looking Ahead

                Tuesday, Oct. 15

Tampa Bay at Montreal: The Lightning head to Bell Centre as slight road favories. They are ice-cold, going 0-5 over the past five as a road favorite, including a stunning loss at Ottawa over the weekend. The home team has come away with victories in four of the past five meetings in this series, with the 'under' cashing in four of the past five. That's a stark contrast to what's been happening for Montreal overall, as the 'over' is 4-0-1 in their five games overall, including 1-0-1 in two home outings. In fact, the Canadiens are averaging 4.3 goals per game while yielding 4.3 goals per outing.

Arizona at Winnipeg: The Coyotes and Jets meet in Winnipeg. The 'under' has connected in all four games for Arizona so far, as they have scratched out seven goals while allowing a total of seven. Four of the goals scored came in their win against Vegas on Oct. 10, so it's been mostly a power outage for the Coyotes on offense. In their two road games the Coyotes are 0-1-1, losing at Anaheim on Oct. 3 and Colorado on Oct. 12. The Jets started out on the road, splitting four games in the New York City area, and one game at Pittsburgh. They are coming off a 7-2 beatdown at the hands of the Penguins, as G Laurent Brossoit took one for the team. G Connor Hellebuyck will be in between the pipes against the 'Yotes.

Philadelphia at Calgary: The Flyers are on the second of a their three-game western Canada swing after falling 3-2 in Vancouver in a shootout on Saturday. The Flames have yet to hit their stride offensively, scoring three or fewer goals in all six games so far, while coughing up three or more goals in four of their six affairs. They're back home for the first time since Oct. 8, as they look to treat the home fans to a better result than the 4-3 overtime loss they saw against Los Angeles in the Saddledome last time out. The 'over' has connected in five of the past seven meetings in this series.

                Wednesday, Oct. 16

Toronto at Washington: The road team has connected in five of the past seven meetings in this series, so Toronto has that going for them. However, they have won just six of the past 20 in this series. Alex Ovechkin and the Caps just seem to have their number, and the favorite has connected in 20 of the past 28 in this series. They might be catching the Capitals in a good spot, however, as they have dropped four of the past five, including two in regulation and two in overtime. The last time out Washington was doubled up by Colorado on Monday by a 6-3 score. The 'over' is 3-1 in the past four for the Caps.

Buffalo at Anaheim: The Sabres head out to 'The Pond' to battle the Ducks. Buffalo will be looking to snap a four-game skid against Pacific Division foes. Anaheim has been solid when favored, winning four in a row. However, facing the Eastern Conference hasn't been kind to them lately, going 6-15 in the past 21. The road team has won five of the past six meetings in this series, too, while the 'dog has barked in four of the past five meetings. That might mean it's a good idea to fade Anaheim, with Buffalo a solid value on the road.

                Thursday, Oct. 17

N.Y. Rangers at New Jersey: The Devils are looking to avenge a 6-4 loss in Newark against the Panthers, 6-4. They'll face a familiar foe in the Rangers. The Blueshirts won three of the four regular-season meetings in this series last year, although New Jersey won 4-2 in the last meeting on April 1, no foolin'. The home team has won six of the past seven in this series between NYC Metro rivals. The Rangers have been so-so in their three games to date. However, the power play has been clicking, hitting at a 33.3 percent clip to rank fourth during the early going. The penalty kill ranks 13th at 83.3 percent.

Nashville at Arizona: The Predators skate into the desert to face the Coyotes, and Arizona actually won this season series 2-1 in 2018-19. The Preds avoided the season sweep with a 5-2 win in the Music City last Feb. 5, but Arizona won 3-0 in Nashville on Nov. 29 and 2-1 at home on Nov. 15 in the only meeting in the Valley of the Sun. The Coyotes have actually won five of the past six against the Predators in Glendale dating back to the 2014-15 when the Predators swept the three-game season series. Nashville has struggled early on, ranking 25th on the power play at 16.2 percent while going 18th on the penalty kill at 80.8 percent.

St. Louis Cardinals vs. Washington Nationals Preview and Predictions 10-15-2019The Washington Nationals look to complete a sweep of the visiting St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series. Left-hander Patrick Corbin tries to deliver Washington's fourth straight strong outing as the starters have yet to allow an earned run in 21 2/3 innings in the best-of-seven series.

The Nationals rolled to an 8-1 triumph on Monday as 36-year-old Howie Kendrick had three doubles and three RBIs to continue a strong postseason in which he has driven in nine runs. "I think it shows baseball we can all still do it," Kendrick said in a postgame television interview of a veteran like himself producing. "At a time when they push youth, the old guys can still do it." Most of the St. Louis lineup isn't doing much of anything as the club has two runs and 11 hits in the series, with Jose Martinez (4-of-6) and Paul DeJong (3-for-9) combining for seven of the hits. "I can tell you this, and it's appropriate for the area we're at: There is no concession speech being written," Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said during his postgame press conference. "This is a team that can absolutely win four games in a row, and clearly we have to start (Tuesday), and we've got to get after it, which we will, but anybody that's seen this team, we're obviously clearly in a tough spot."

                          TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, TBS

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Dakota Hudson (0-0, 1.93 ERA) vs. Nationals LH Patrick Corbin (0-2, 7.56)

Hudson wasn't involved in the decision in his lone postseason outing when he faced the Atlanta Braves in Game 4 of the NL Division Series. The 25-year-old, who beat the Nationals on Sept. 16 when he gave up two runs and five hits over seven innings, often has control issues and led the majors with 86 walks. "He has improved as the season has gone, especially against the lefties," Shildt said. "You've got a very conscientious, talented guy that can figure things out, and experience usually lends itself to that for guys that have that ilk."

Corbin is making his second start of the postseason and has thrown two pitches in this series - getting one out in relief in Game 2 - and said he is feeling fresh. "Been lucky to stay healthy this whole season and just kind of continue to do what you've done, be smart about things," Corbin said in a press conference. "I think at this point in the season you're not lifting as heavy as you would and maybe backing down on some running and things like that." Corbin defeated St. Louis on Sept. 17 when he struck out 11 and gave up two unearned runs and five hits over six innings.

                          WALK-OFFS

                          1. The Nationals pitchers recorded 16 strikeouts without a walk Monday and have combined to whiff 34 and walk three in the series.

                          2. St. Louis 1B Paul Goldschmidt fanned in all four at-bats in Game 3 and is 1-for-12 with six strikeouts in the series.

                          3. Washington CF Victor Robles went 2-for-4 with a homer Monday after missing the previous five games with a hamstring injury.

                          PREDICTION: Nationals 6, Cardinals 1
