After three consecutive wins and covers, UAB stepped out of the conference to get stomped by Tennessee last week, 30-7. The 30 points they gave up to the Vols is the most all season. The Blazers "D" ranks 15th nationally, yielding just 17.5 PPG. Southern Mississippi can not run the ball very well, relying upon their passing game. Well, UAB owns the 6th ranked pass defense in college football. Although the status of Blazers quarterback, Johnston III is questionable (check status), they still face the 102nd ranked pass "D" of the Golden Eagles here. Charlotte has won two straight after a four game losing streak. The 49ers offense was very crisp in underdog wins over North Texas and MTSU at home. The team did it last week without all-world running back Benny LeMay whose availability for Saturday is up in the air. The defense has played well enough as of late even though the unit still isn't very good. For a comparison, they held UMass to 17 points back in September and the Minutemen are more competent then UTEP. The Miners have scored 117 points since their week one win against Houston Baptist. They can't complete passes and because of that people are stacking the box against the run. UTEP's defense is brutal, but they've shown the ability to stop teams at times. They held UTSA to 26 points at home just over a month ago. I just think Charlotte wins this one by a 31-17 type score and 17 is generous for the home team.

The Iowa Hawkeyes are catching too many points against Wisconsin this week. This game will decide which team still has a chance to win the Big Ten West, and I expect it to be decided by 7 points or less. Wisconsin has lost back-to-back games in ugly fashion getting upset by Illinois as 29-point favorites and losing by 31 to Ohio State as 14.5-point underdogs. Iowa hasn’t been blown out all season. The Hawkeyes are 6-2 with their only losses coming to Michigan by 7 and Penn State by 5. Iowa’s defense is way too good for them to lose their first game by double-digits this season. The Hawkeyes only allow 10.1 points and 265.9 yards per game this year. They have been even better in Big Ten play yielding 9.4 points and 249.6 yards per game. Wisconsin has the better running game, but Iowa has the better QB in Nate Stanley over Jack Coan. The four-year starter Stanley will be able to handle the pressure of the hostile atmosphere in Madison this weekend. Kirk Ferentz is 40-18 ATS against good rushing teams that average 200 or more yards per game at Iowa. Give me Iowa.
