4-Unit Play. Take #777 Providence (-16) over Long Beach State (2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 28)
It is difficult to blow out a team in the opener of a nonconference tournament on a neutral court. Especially when a team like LBSU is actually playing closer to home. However, this game should be a bloodbath. I'm not exactly sure what the hell is going on with Providence. They have lost to the only Top 200 teams they have played, Northwestern and Penn. They should not lose to either of those two loser teams. Their other four games, against weak sisters the same caliber as LBSU? The Friars have won those four games by 46, 29, 21 and 37 points. That's an average of 33 points per win over teams ranked No. 200 or lower. LBSU is No. 285. The 49ers lost by 28 to Stanford, by 18 to St. Mary's and by 37 to Arizona. Providence is as talented as any of those teams. Again, I don't know what is going on with these idiots. But they have the physical talent of a Top 15 team. If they play like it they will win this game by 25+. And coming off a loss (to Penn) I will wager that they are not screwing around in this one and that they will be focused and ready to get a blowout.
3-Unit Play. Take #759 N.C. State (-1.5) over Memphis (4 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 28)
It's kind of an indicator that N.C. State is favored in this game against a very highly touted Memphis team. The Tigers are being forced to play without stud center James Wiseman. And while they have plenty of talent still, N.C. State is not a team that is going to be rattled by going up against the Tigers. N.C. State has veteran guards, including seniors Markell Johnson and C.J. Bryce along with junior Braxton Beverly. The Wolfpack play in the ACC. Memphis isn't going to have anything that State hasn't seen before. I will take experience in this one.
1-Unit Play. Take #768 Marquette (-3.5) over Davidson (6:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 28)
This Davidson team is actually pretty good. Kellan Grady and Jon Axel Gudmundsson are an outstanding backcourt and Davidson will be a real factor in a loaded A-10. However, they aren't playing well right now. They are just 2-3 and they have bad losses to Charlotte and Wake Forest, two teams they should've mopped up. Marquette is really shaky right now as well. But they have Markus Howard. And no one else does. And he's capable of scoring 40 on any given night. These guys are a bit bigger, stronger and more experienced. Davidson is a soft team that wants to outscore teams. That's not really going to work against the Golden Eagles, though, because A) Howard and B) if Marquette can give Howard help with scoring from the interior they are tough to beat. If Davidson wins this game, fine. They're a good team and it wouldn't surprise me. But this line should be 6.5 so I'll play the value.
