While the 49ers are on the upswing, Buffalo has shown very good consistency and sustainability under coach Lance Leipold. RB Jaret Patterson is the straw that stirs the Bulls' drink offensively. On the other side of the ball, they are much better than Charlotte, which should help them get the win.

However, its secondary isn't very strong, and Utah State will try to attack it consistently.

But Buffalo will be equally pumped a year after suffering a 10-point loss to Troy at a postseason site with far less appeal. The matchup for the Bulls is to dream for. They led the MAC in rushing, while the 49ers were among the worst FBS teams against the run. Having played a tougher schedule - Buffalo beat three bowl invitees, Charlotte just one - affords the Bulls another edge.

Kent State +7: This is going to be one of those bowl plays where it's incentive over the projections. On paper, this game is pretty much lined where it ought to be. Utah State is the more talented team. I power rated the game Aggies -7, so no value on the math. But I don't think there's any question that the want factor is more with the underdog in this matchup. Kent State is thrilled to be bowling for the first time in several years. Second year coach Sean Lewis has done a remarkable job of turning the fortunes of the Flashes around much sooner than anyone could have foreseen. Utah State came into the season as a team that had designs on making a run at a considerably bigger bowl, perhaps even the Cotton. But it just hasn't worked out for the Aggies, and they simply have not played what I would call inspired football. In the minor bowls, I'm very comfortable backing underdogs that might not look great on the numbers, but have the hunger factor on their side. Kent State plus the points for me.

UPDATE: UTAH STATE QB JORDAN LOVE WAS POPPED FOR POT THIS MORNING. AGGIES NOW FAVORED BY 6.5 AND LINE WILL DROP FURTHER IF HE GETS RULED OUT. KENT STATE REMAINS A BEST BET AT ADJUSTED NUMBER.

BAHAMAS BOWL -- It still strikes me as strange that teams that didn't even win the MAC or Conference USA are rewarded with a trip to the Bahamas, but, hey, more power to them. As for this game, it's a nightmare matchup for Charlotte. The 49ers biggest weakness is their run defense and they're going up against a Buffalo offense that wants to run the ball often, and it's effective at doing so.

FRISCO BOWL -- There are a lot of unknowns at play in this game. Utah State QB Jordan Love recently ran into some legal trouble, and we don't know what -- if any -- kind of punishment he'll face from the team. If he plays a full four quarters, I think Utah State wins in a rout. I just don't know that he will, and I suspect he misses some time. I had already like the Under before Love's troubles came to light, and now with the prospect of him missing time, it's even more attractive.

FRISCO BOWL -- Let's lock this in at the value number before it returns to -7 or higher before kickoff. The Aggies have likely underachieved relative to their talent level in the first year of the second stint by Gary Andersen. but they still have quality wins over San Diego State and Wyoming to their credit. Andersen confirmed Thursday that pro-bound QB Jordan Love will play Friday despite being cited for misdemeanor marijuana possession earlier in the week. Barring a letdown, Utah State should get much the better of a 6-6 Kent State club that needed to win its last three to become bowl-eligible.
