INDEPENDENCE BOWL -- If this game were being played in a vacuum Miami would not only win, but would cover with ease. Bowl games present all sorts of different factors one must consider, however, and one is that it's hard to imagine Miami being fired up to play Louisiana Tech in Shreveport the day after Christmas. Furthermore, Miami has spent all season failing to live up to its potential while the Bulldogs have been quite good. They lost to Texas to open the season, and their two conference losses came in games they were without their starting QB and leading WR. Take the points, but don't be shocked if the Dogs win outright.

I'm taking the points with Louisiana Tech on Thursday. To say Miami is disappointed and unmotivated by a bowl appearance in Shreveport, Louisiana, is an understatement. A few players even expressed disappointment when their bowl draw was announced. Crowd support will be non-existent for the 'Canes, who don't travel well anyway. Miami suffered what once would have been considered unthinkable losses throughout the course of the season and now have multiple players sitting-out the bowl game as they prepare for the NFL draft. It's essentially a home game for La Tech as they look to make amends for late season suspensions that kept them from a shot at the C-USA championship. What gives the Bulldogs an edge in this game is the consistency of QB J'Mar Smith, who is very efficient and will do a great job keeping the Hurricanes' defense guessing. The Bulldogs also should be able to slow down Miami's offense.

The 'Canes come into this game off a very disappointing season and I don't see them having a lot of motivation here. They've also lost eight of their last nine bowl games. This is basically a home game for the Bulldogs, who unlike Miami are happy to be here. Skip Holtz has his team playing well -- Louisiana Tech notched its first 10-win season in 35 years. The Bulldogs have won five straight bowl games, tied with Wisconsin for the longest streak in the nation. Take the points but don't be surprised by an outright upset.
